Sauti Za Busara Festival al Makes A Come Back k Celebrating African culture and music

“ALL ROADS LEAD TO ZANZIBAR FOR KL =9KL 9>JA;9 K >AF=KL FESTIVAL” By Wema Mkemu

ast African traditional music has gone through changes due to historical, political, and economic evolutions, shaping it into what it is today from its ancient roots. Located in the African Great Lakes region is Tanzania, home to the Sauti za Busara Music Festival in the cultural heart of Zanzibar. Now excitement and anticipation are rising fast for Sauti za Busara, one of the continent’s most respected African music festivals which is set to begin this month. Due to the uncertainty around the

elections in Zanzibar, the 13th edition of the annual Sauti za Busara festival was delayed for over a year. But now everything is back on course for a great festival that will explore the theme “Africa United”, on its 14th edition with 400 artists performing on three stages over four days in February.

life. Traditional music is passed down orally, enjoyed on occasions such as religious ceremonies, birth of a newborn, rites of passages, weddings and funerals. Beyond its entertaining function, music serves an even larger purpose to locals, as it promotes a sense of unity when going about their daily routines.

Sauti za Busara means “sounds of wisdom” in Swahili, and the festival aims to provide visitors with an opportunity to explore a perspective in which music may be not only enjoyed but also used as a method to teach lessons in

around the world. This year’s edition has an exciting line-up, featuring four days and nights each with over nine hours of FRQFHUWV DQG ¿OPV E\ DUWLVWV from 20 countries across the African continent. In addition to music live shows, the festival includes several other activities both in Stone Town and in other locations in Zanzibar; the most popular of them being fashion shows and a carnival parade in the streets of Stone Town. The festival also provides networking opportunities for African artists and music professionals,

creates employment for locals, and draws in business for tourism, which is the top income generator on the island. “ Since its inception in 2004, Sauti za Busara has attained a reputation of being “the friendliest festival on the planet”, and has also been listed as one of the Top 25 Festivals in the World by Songlines Magazine. The festival owes much of its popularity to “the warm, welcoming hearts of the Zanzibari people”, and the town’s sociable cultural beauty. The lighting in Old Fort

(Stone Town) illuminates the ancient walls, and the sounds of African beats reverberate within the historical arena. It’s not just the musicians who put on a show – the local community is also encouraged to take part by hosting Busara Xtra fringe events. These include traditional ngoma drum and dance, fashion shows, dhow races, open-mic sessions, after-parties and various other performances and competitions. The East African music festival which seeks to unite African musician from all over the

is our priority, so admission prices are greatly subsidized for Tanzanians,” said festival Director, Yusuf Mahmoud.

Forty music groups which were selected from 600 applicants will entertain festival goers during the four-day event.

Other artists who will be showcasing their talents are Sami Dan (Ethiopia), Yamoto Band (Tanzania), Jagwa Music, Chibite Zawose Family (Tanzania), Rajab Suleiman & Kithara, Matona’s G Clef Band and Tausi Women’s Group (Zanzibar), Sarabi and H_art the Band (Kenya).

The Sauti za Busara is exclusively dedicated to African music and will feature artists such as Mohammad Issa Matona (Zanzibar), Mehdi Nassouli (Morocco), Victor Lolinga (mainland Tanzania), Pat Thomas & Kwashibu Area Band and Rocky Dawuni (Ghana), Sahra Halgan (Somalia), Roland Tchakounte (Cameroon), Batimbo Percussion Magique (Burundi), Grace Barbe (Seychelles) and Isau Meneses (Mozambique). “Music brings people together. Music communicates to all of us, rich or poor, regardless of language, religion, gender or politics. Music teaches us to respect our differences and value diversity. A critical factor for its success is the shared experience between visitors and locals. Keeping the event accessible for local people

As part of the Africa United theme, Sauti za Busara features Swahili Encounters, a unique residency to unite musicians from diverse musical backgrounds through collaboration with Zanzibar’s Dhow Countries Music Academy (DCMA). This year’s original musical fusion will feature collaboration between Morocco, Zanzibar and mainland Tanzania, with renowned musicians such as Mohammad Issa Matona (Zanzibar), Mehdi Nassouli (Morocco) and Victor Lolinga (mainland TZ). Representing Swahili, French and Arabic language and musical tastes, the musicians will devise at least two new compositions to perform at

the festival on Thursday, February 9, at 7:05 p.m. on the main stage. Of Swahili Encounters, BBC News notes “those really magical moments, when different musicians ¿QG WKDW FRPPRQ SODFH ZKHUH LW ‘clicks’ and everything works in harmony to produce a truly exciting new sound.” Mehdi Nassouli of the Moroccan musical collective ‘Bob Maghrib’ is no stranger to fusion and collaboration. Festivalgoers can revel in these sounds when Nassouli and his band perform on Friday, February 10th on the main stage at 9:30 p.m. The festival will shine the spotlight on local Swahili musicians and authentic Tanzanian pop and hiphop. Opportunities to Embrace French Culture at Alliance Française Cinéma Screening : Rengaine (France, 2010)

Director: Rachid Djaïdani Paris, today. Dorcy, a young Christian black man, wants to marry Sabrina, a young Arab girl. It would be simple and easy if she didn’t have forty brothers, and if this unconcerned wedding wouldn’t raise all the taboos still heavily anchored in both communities: no marriage between black and Arabs. Slimane, the elder brother of Sabrina’s family

and keeper of the traditions, will try to oppose to their union by any means necessary. Date: Friday 3rd February / 6.30pm / FREE

Barazani - A bimonthly Multicultural Night with Leo Mkanyia

Leo was born in Dar es Salaam in 1981. He began playing guitar when he was eight years old. His father is an African jazz guitarist who played with the renowned

Mlimani Park Orchestra. Leo’s songs are poignant; they portray the realities of life in Tanzania. His songs celebrate Africa’s history and culture; tell stories of migration from village to town, gender inequality and empowerment of women, politics and poor governance, and love. In his music you’ll hear throwbacks to the 70s and 80s with classic Tanzanian zilipendwa muziki-wa-dansi, but with a contemporary twist, blues, and afrobeat. All are original representations of Tanzanian traditional blues; a genre which Leo is adamant must be preserved. Wednesday 22nd Februaary, 7pm10pm, FREE ENTRANCE!

2017 Kilimanjaro Marathon marks 15th Anniversary A true international marathon By Michael Mukunza

T

he marathon began with only about 500 runners 15 years ago but to date more than 8000 runners from more than 45 countries. The runners converge in Moshi every year for an event that has become a must attend for them as they also get to enjoy running with the Kilimanjaro mountain in the background. The marathon is successful because of support from various sponsors and stakeholders.

“The prestigious Kilimanjaro Marathon is now in its 15 year and is now the biggest athletics event in Tanzania that brings together athletes and participants from all over the world.”

“We started very small 15 years ago but today we host 8000 plus runners and all this is attributed to the commitment from sponsors and other stakeholders who have closely been working with us to put together the event,” says Wild Frontiers Managing Director, John Addison who is the founder and main organizer of the event. He says this year’s sponsors who made it happen include, Kilimanjaro Premium Lager-42 km, Tigo 21km, GAPCO 10 km wheel chair and hand cycle, Grand Malt-5km Fun Run. Others sponsors include KK Security, TPC Limited, FNB, Kibo Palace, Kilimanjaro Water, CMC Automobile, Rwandair, Keys Hotel as well the new sponsors Anglo Gold Ashanti and KNAUF Gypsum.

We also thank the Ministry for Information, Culture, Artistes and Sports, Athletics Tanzania, national coordinatorsExecutive Solutions, Kilimanjaro Amateur Athletics Association, the police force and other stakeholders who always support us unconditionally.

This year’s event will be held at the Moshi Cooperative University (MoCU) on Sunday February 26, 2017 from 6am and will comprise the following races 42 km, 21 km, 10 km for the disabled and the 5km fun run. There is already a lot of buzz all over as the online registration continues with this year looking promising in terms of numbers following the growing popularity of the marathon. According to Mr. Addison there are a number of improvements this year like

adding Dar es Salaam as a registration point and also increasing the number of days for registration. “Due to the increase in numbers and also to avoid last minute rush as previously experienced in Moshi, we introduced Dar es Salaam as a registration centre from February 18 to 19 at Mlimani *P[` V\[ZPKL .YHUV *VќLL shop from 9am to 5pm while in Arusha registration will take place at Kibo Palace Hotel on February 21 and 22 from 2pm to 8pm then end with Moshi on February 23-12pm February 2017 I Dar Life I 31

He stresses that no registration will happen after 12pm on February 25 to give the organising team enough time to put things in place. Kilimanjaro Premium Lager have been the main sponsors since the marathon started 15 years ago and are proud of what has been achieved so far in terms of growth. Tigo is sponsoring the event for the third time running now and is so far enjoying the popularity of the 21 km race. GAPCO is in its seventh year 32 I Dar Life I February 2017

of sponsoring the 10km race for the disabled and views this as a great opportunity to give back to the community especially the less abled. Grand Malt is in its third year of sponsorship of the 5km fun run that attracts the largest number of runners as it is an all age race. The Kilimanjaro Marathon boasts of a lot of success but the most recent is Alfonce Felix Simbu who is now a house hold name after emerging 5th in the 42 km Rio Olympic Games last year in Brazil and this January won the Mumbai Stand Chart Marathon. He is a product of the Kilimanjaro Marathon.

Most people are already excited about the marathon and are already training hard to ensure they win something out of the marathon but some are doing it as a hobby and also for personal Ä[ULZZ 6[OLYZ NV [V Moshi to have fun and turn it into a family outing as they run on the slopes of Mount Kilimanjaro while others run for a course to fund certain projects or people.”

A Premature Baby Prevention Information & Support by Sali International Hospital By Dr Ngecpe Agnes- Pediatrician. (MBChB, MMED Pediatric and child health)

Why do we have premature children? The reasons could be many! In fact, it is not yet possible to ascertain why exactly someone had a premature baby. Did they suffer from any type of abnormalities in uterine structure? Example uterine ÀEULRG RU WKHUH PLJKW EH VRPH LQfections like malaria, imbalances in hormones, or emotional trauma during the gestation period, which led to premature labor. Certain chronic illnesses can also be a potent reason. Some other factors that enhance the chances of delivering premature babies include poor eating habits of the mother, or her unhealthy lifestyle. You have been ‘unhealthy’ if you have continued taking drugs, consuming alcohol or smoking during the JHVWDWLRQ SHULRG ,QVXIÀFLHQW DQWHnatal care can also be responsible. Whatever the reason, mothers should not blame themselves as the subject is more complicated than you think and a number of

factors can be the reason behind a premature delivery. What health issues do the premature suffer and are they life long? In Tanzania, one in four newborn deaths are due to premature birth complications, there might be some short term problems, if the baby is born before 37 weeks of gestation. Immature organs and a vulnerable immune system can make a baby susceptible to conditions such as sepsis, jaundice, hemorrhaging, anemia, hypoglycemia and respiratory disorders. In some babies, there might be long-term issues like learning disabilities and partial deafness. Many parents live the ÀUVW IHZ GD\V DIWHU ELUWKLQJ D premature baby in the fear of losing the baby. However, keeping a positive attitude and providing the medical facilities to her/him should be your priority. The little soul needs all the love and care you can provide. Understand that your premature baby has his/her own unique needs, and the more you give to him or her, the better. Is it necessary to take premature baby to the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU)?

YES; at NICU, or the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit, the premature babies will get all the comfortable and useful things that are indispensable for easy revival. For example, at NICU, the premature babies can be isolated, with a special bed devised for them. The care providers will also use neonatal incubator, which will help maintain the right body temperature, humidity and levels of oxygen. Couples Who Spa Together Stay Together Re-ignite the Spark this Valentine’s Day

By The Spa Correspondent

f a spa getaway is not possible to squeeze into your busy schedule, however, pick up some massage oils and candles to create a romantic spa night for two at home. Step 1: Choose your spa space. Mikumi consists of two distinct parts: open plains in the north and woodland savannah in the south, divided by the road from Dar es Salaam to Iringa. This makes the park extremely accessible for visitors. But don’t be afraid that the road will ruin your safari experience. The only roar you will hear is not of cars, but of the king of the jungle.

The light at dusk and dawn makes a visit to the plains truly mesmerizing The concentration of wildlife is remarkably high; no less than 15,000 large mammals roam the area. Mikumi is connected to the Selous in the south. With animals flocking through the corridor, it provides a vital artery to the park’s wildlife. Wildebeest, eland, zebra, buffalo, warthog, yellow baboon, vervet monkey, spotted hyena, lion and impala are a frequent sighting. Just as large herds of elephants. In the late 1980’s their numbers dropped rapidly after intensive poaching, but fortunately the population bounced back thanks to the efforts of TANAPA and other stake holders towards improving ant poaching in the area. The beautiful sable antelope and kudu love foraging in the miombo-covered foothills of the surrounding mountains. The giraffe might be more of an

elusive creature here, but its exceptionally light features add to the magic of a sighting. Another striking encounter you might have is with a lion, lazily draped over a tree branch. Behaviour that is typical in Manyara, yet not fully understood. Birdlife is rich and colourful; over 400 species can be seen and heard. Many migratory birds join the locals, especially during the Palearctic winter, when the abundant insects and amphibians of Mikumi form a feeding frenzy. And while hippos entertain the crowd in the pools north of the main entrance gate, they are often cheered on by many different waterbirds.

The only roar you will hear is not of cars, but of the king of the jungle • Mikumi National Park was established in 1964. In 1975, it was connected to the Selous, with which it forms an integrated ecosystem. • It covers 3,230 km2 and stretches 90 km from north to south. • Easily accessible from Dar es Salaam: a highway is leading directly to and from the city. • Height: 430 m (northern plains) - 700 m (average of the hilly south).

• Average temperature: June – September 25-28 °C (daytime), November – April around 30 °C (sometimes 40 °C). Average night-time temperature: 16-19 °C (never below 12 °C). • Dry season: June – November, wet season: December – May (less rainy in January – February). • Best time to visit: June – October. • Mikumi is easily accessible by road, train and air. • By road: 300 km/4 hours from Dar es Salaam on a good tarmac road. • By air: scheduled flights from Dar es Salaam to an airstrip at Kikoboga. Several safari companies organise private flights.

Accommodation Inside the park: three lodges, one hostel, several bandas, public campsites, special campsites and a rest house (bookings for hostel, bandas and special campsites through the Park).

What to do Game drives, guided walking safaris, bird watching, photography and camping. Park contacts: mikumi@tanzaniaparks.com Hotlines: +255 689 062 334 / +255 767 536 135

Climate

Electricity

Generally dry and hot with cool nights/mornings in June – October; short rains from November to mid-December and long rains March – May, but the seasons can vary. The coastal strip is hot and humid all year round. Temperatures on Mount Kilimanjaro and Meru drop to below freezing.

230V, but power failures, surges and dips are common. Bring a universal adaptor and a torch (flashlight) or headlamp.

Clothes

Car hire

Pack lightweight, washable clothes plus a sweater for early morning game drives, as well as a sun hat, sunglasses and sunscreen. Long sleeves and trousers in light-coloured fabrics help discourage insect bites. Shorts for women are acceptable. Women should carry a wrap to cover legs in the villages and towns as revealing clothes can cause offence, especially in Zanzibar and Muslim areas. On the beach and within the confines of beach hotels normal swimwear is acceptable. If you have plans to climb Kilimanjaro or Meru, bring thermal underwear, light layers, a sweater, rain jacket, proper socks and sturdy boots.

Self-drive vehicles are available mainly for local errands or tarmac use. 4x4 vehicles for safaris usually have to be hired with a driver.

On safari Distances in Tanzania are vast and travel by road can be wearing. Plan to spend more time in fewer parks. You’ll see more and won’t return home exhausted. Keep your distance from animals and be quiet to avoid distressing the wildlife. Follow instructions of rangers or guides. Don’t leave your vehicle in the parks except in designated places. Keep to recognised tracks to avoid damaging vegetation.

Photography Protect your camera from dust and keep equipment and film cool. It is courteous to ask permission before photographing local people. If you intend to take a lot of people pictures, please bring an instant printer with you so that you can leave a picture with the people you photograph.

Cuissine Local and international cuissine are served in hotels and lodges.

Driving People drive on the left side of the road. An international licence is required. Plan long safaris carefully, ensuring your vehicle is road worthy. Please bring two spare tyres, an operational jack and tool kit. Carry extra fuel, spares and water.

Travel with children Tanzanians love children and are especially helpful to mothers. However, canned baby food, powdered milk and disposable nappies may not be available outside major towns.

Visas Check current requirements with the nearest Tanzanian High Commission, embassy or consulate, or your travel agent.

Security Tanzania is a generally safe country, but do use common sense. Keep an eye on your belongings. Don’t walk in the towns or cities at night – take a taxi instead. Don’t carry cameras or large amounts of cash and beware of pickpockets. Use hotel safety deposit boxes to safeguard valuables and obtain a receipt. Leave valuable jewellery at home.

Entry points Insurance Take out travel insurance to cover loss of baggage or valuables, personal accident and medical expenses.

Tipping Tipping is not obligatory, but a tip for exceptional service.
