ABOUTTHEILLUSTRATOR

Abigail is an illustrator living in the UK countryside, and loves to illustrate the natural world. She’s been illustrating for children’s books full time since obtaining a Masters degree in Children’s Literature and Illustration from Goldsmiths University Of London in 2019.

In 2017, she graduated with a First Class Honours Degree in Game Art and Design from Norwich University of the Arts, which allowed her to express her passion for evoking wonder by exploring the use of lighting and colour to convey emotion and tell stories, giving her a unique approach to children’s book illustration.

Her illustrations are created with a mixed media approach, using a range of materials from gouache to oil pastel and often Photoshop for final enhancements.

Her most recent illustrated picture book, ‘You Are My Everything’, is due to be published in Autumn 2024 by Little Tiger Publishing.

Dream Projects:

“A dream project would be to work on exciting format novelty books, where the illustrations have to be considered and planned around the design and special elements of the book.”

ABOUTTHEILLUSTRATOR

Adam Ming is a Malaysian illustrator. He grew up on Penang Island where you will find the best food hidden in back alleys and in world heritage buildings. Adam makes witty and energetic illustrations with a comic sensibility. His illustrations jump off the page, with a tactile quality that makes you want to pick them up.

Adam is obsessed with the creative process, constantly refining his own practice; which he writes in his popular “Adam’s Notes” Newsletter He now lives with his wife and daughter in Kuala Lumpur.

ABOUTTHEILLUSTRATOR

Alberta is an Italian illustrator, currently based in London, who has been drawing since a very young age. She worked as a motion graphics designer before turning to illustration, attending courses in Italy and London, including at Central Saint Martins and House of Illustration, and was awarded the Battello A Vapore Prize for Best Emerging Illustrator in 2013 She is the illustrator of This Little picture book series published by Macmillan, and of the WOW! board book series published by HarperCollins. She has created illustrations for multiple publications and a range of clients, including Italian publisher Giunti and The Old Vic theatre.

Dream Projects:

“My dream would be to work on picture books with great characters (people or animals!), full of humor and warmth, and with plenty of room to let the imagination run free. I love adding layers to a story, and making great use of ancillary characters and elements to add depth and make a book worth reading time and time again. I love projects with important and empowering messages, but equally silly laugh-out-loud books - because I believe laughter is the best kind of medicine.”

Aleesha Nandhra is an Illustrator and sometimes Printmaker from London. Since graduating from the Cambridge School of Art she has created work for the likes of Google, the LA Times, the Barbican and been shortlisted for the World Illustration Awards. Thematically she is drawn to work that deals with nature, culture, mental health, and everyday life Narratives and visual storytelling play a huge part in her creative practice.

Anastasiia is an illustrator and visual artist from Kyiv, Ukraine. She is currently living in Stockholm, Sweden. She enjoys creating whimsical and quirky illustrations inspired by mystical tales and mythology. Anastasiia studied Japanese culture and language at university. Now she loves illustrating heart-warming stories with a pinch of mystery taking inspiration from her childhood, nature and new cities with a unique history. When she’s not drawing, Anastasiia does home workouts or yoga in the park where she then drinks coffee on the riverside.

“I would love to work on book covers and chapter books with magic stories, whimsical and/or spooky characters in it. I would love to try both picture books and chapters books. I wanted to create quirky illustrations for early and middle grade readers.

Anneli Bray is a children’s illustrator from North West England.

From an early age she could be found painting stories about animals and other magical creatures, making books about ponies and reading voraciously She studied illustration at Norwich University of the Arts and after became a bookseller who dreamed of having her own illustrations in a book one day. Now she is best known for her warm, colourful illustrations that are influenced by her love of travel, nature and adventure

Chanté Timothy's work often explores different themes of diversity. She loves experimenting with movement, expression and storytelling through her characters. The one thing she enjoys most about being an illustrator is the wide variety of subject matters you learn about on the job - you’d think most of the studying would be left at school but Chanté often finds herself learning new facts and interesting concepts from given briefs. She's fascinated by science and space and would love to work on non-fiction projects in this area, as well as picture books, middle grade covers and black and white interiors.

Chanté’s first book debut called “A Black Woman Did That” by Malaika Adero in 2020 helped kick start her passion for children’s book illustration.

ABOUTTHEILLUSTRATOR

Emily Jones is a freelance illustrator working out of her studio in Cardiff. Born and raised in Tyneside, Emily moved to Wales to study Illustration at the School of Creative Arts, Wrexham. There, she cemented the ambition to illustrate children's books for a living.

Emily likes to illustrate comical characters, environments and scenes with detail and movement. Most of her illustrations are created digitally but she loves to go back to basics with a technical pencil on paper whenever she can.

When she's not illustrating narrative, Emily enjoys painting photorealistic animal portraits, walking through forests with her partner and dogs and is passionate about nature, particularly birds and wildlife.

Emily was named runner-up in the Jonathan Cape/Observer Graphic short story Prize 2017, shortlisted for the Stratford-Salariya picture book prize and, picked as an 'Undiscovered Voice' by SCWBI in 2018.

Erica J. Chen is a Chinese-American illustrator currently based in California and Nova Scotia.

Erica enjoys creating character-driven illustrations with a touch of humour and whimsy. She has a particular penchant for drawing awkward yet endearing animals, perhaps because she finds them very relatable.

Erica is interested in working on book series and anthologies, and hopes to one day illustrate a collection of animal fables or fun facts. A life-long Edward Gorey fan, she is also drawn to darker stories that are both spooky and quirky, and dreams of illustrating a picture book or middle-grade book in that vein.

When she is not drawing, Erica can be found reading cozy mysteries, worshipping her corgi Luna, and adding to her growing bucket list of “Cute Animals to Encounter”.

“I would love to work on picture or chapter books with oddball characters of either the human or animal variety! A chance to work on some classic stories/fables would also be great - stories that I grew up with that I can put on my own spin on!”

Harry Goldhawk is a bestselling freelance illustrator based in Newlyn, Cornwall. He graduated from the University of Gloucestershire studying illustration in 2015. He is heavily inspired by his gorgeous surroundings. With a passion for colour and composition, Harry is interested in illustrating anything magical or fantastical.

ABOUTTHEILLUSTRATOR

Born and raised in Taiwan, Jason Chuang moved to the UK when he was 15 and subsequently pursued an illustration degree at Falmouth University, and has graduated from his Visual Communication Master’s degree at Royal College of Art in 2021. Jason’s practice focuses on the exploration of human emotions through the creation of symbolic imagery, coating them with elements of the absurd and poetries. Passionate about narrative, Jason often ponders on impossible situations, projecting himself into endless alternate universes and constantly searching for new ways to tell stories. His work aims to offer the audience an alternative world that is distinctly different from reality, but somehow closer to the truth.

Jamie Hammond has always made up stories, especially when adults tell him not to. These days, he makes them up about grizzly monsters, grumpy gnomes or any old nonsense that sparks his imagination.

By day, he is a children’s books designer, and has now turned his efforts to writing and drawing his own. He is proud to be LGBTQ+ and is passionate about writing stories that share his love of love. Jamie lives in Cambridgeshire with his husband and his own little monster (also known as Jaxon, his pug), and can often be found by following the trail of biscuit crumbs he leaves behind.

Jess is an illustrator, comic artist and writer living in Torquay, Devon with her husband and son She has been drawing for as long as she can remember and after almost deciding to become a make-up special FX artist, realised that she enjoyed making comic and books a little bit more.

Jess draws and writes for The Phoenix Comic and has appeared in over 300 issues. She also writes weekly for The Beano and contributes comic strips to the RSPB and RNLI's supporters magazines. In 2021 she won a Blue Peter Book Award for her work on A Day In The Life of a Poo, a Gnu and You and displays her badge proudly on her pencil case.

Jess works from her home studio and also enjoys filling up sketchbooks with doodles of gherkins and turnips, reading and watching horror films. Comics, cartoons and video games have been a huge influence on her work and she now gets to share her interests with her six year-old son, who beats her at most video games because she taught him too well.

ABOUTTHEILLUSTRATOR

Kate Slater grew up on a beautiful farm in deepest Staffordshire, UK, and studied illustration at Kingston University. She works predominantly in mixed media collage and sometimes in ink too, creating most of her work by hand rather than digitally. Her favourite things to draw are currently birds, orangutans and lions, but she's illustrated everything from romantic woodlice to Ada Lovelace! She especially loves creating wildlife illustrations for children that are realistic and yet full of fun and character.

Her children’s books include the Britannica First Big Book of Why, A Peek at Beaks (Millbrook Press, 2021), A is for Ant and other books in the DK animal alphabet series and The Last Bear (HarperCollins Kids, US). She has also created several large-scale installations and window displays, including a flock of 400 life-size birds for the National Trust’s Farne Islands. When she isn't illustrating, Kate is usually found ambling across the fields with Gladys (or chasing after her), running, reading, singing in a choir and practicing yoga.

“My dream project would be a picture book featuring any kind of animal - I would really love something with birds or orangutans! Or a non-fiction project about anything in the natural world, or a middle grade cover with a chance to do some more interior illustrations too.”

Ken Wilson-Max is an award-winning children’s books author and illustrator. He was born in Zimbabwe and lives in London and has over 75 books published in many languages worldwide. His distinctive style manages to capture special moments between children and grown-ups. All of his books are naturally inclusive with strong, believable representation.

In 2020 his book, Astro Girl won the STEAM award for early years picture books. Of his other books, Where's Lenny? was listed in 50 Best Culturally Diverse Children's Books by The Guardian. Several of his books are included in the core books list of CLPE and BookTrust for early years education. He has been nominated for the Astrid Lindgren Memorial Award (ALMA) on three occasions.

Laila Ekboir worked as a freelance illustrator for many years in Buenos Aires, Argentina before moving to the UK in 2021 to complete an MA in children's book illustration at the Cambridge School of Art. She works by hand, exploring with all kinds of materials, but her favourite medium is printmaking. She draws inspiration from everyday occurrences, current affairs, her sketchbooks and childhood memories of living in California, Mexico City, and Buenos Aires. She is currently working on her debut picturebook, We Are Like Birds.

Dream Projects:

She’d love to do a funny picturebook with distinct, silly characters, artistic sciency nonfiction or a graphic novel for middle grade readers.

Leia Ham is a Singaporean artist and author based in Los Angeles. She has a BFA in Illustration from Art Center college of design and also works as a visual development artist in animation. While she has a wide stylistic range that draws from both eastern and western artistic traditions, she specializes in lush, ornate worldbuilding and expressive characters for middle-grade fiction

Leia loves to draw historically inspired fantasy and adding decorative framing elements to her illustrations, and delights in the chance to explore new perspectives on classical themes and stories.

Lorna Scobie grew up in the depths of the English countryside, climbing trees and taking her rabbit for walks in the fields. She is an author, illustrator and designer, now based in southeast London. Growing up surrounded by nature has heavily influenced her illustrations and her work often revolves around the natural world and animal kingdom. She enjoys illustrating nonfiction 0-6 and 6+, black and white, children’s books, and pre-school books. Lorna draws every day, and always has a sketchbook close to hand when she’s out and about. She illustrates her work by hand rather than digitally, as she enjoys the spontaneity and also the ‘happy mistakes’ that can happen along the way. Lorna uses a range of materials, including paint, pencils and pens.

Matt is a self-taught illustrator based in South Wales - although he grew up in Manchester (and is a proud Northerner!).

As a kid, Matt would devour the Beano and Dandy comics and then spend hours copying the cartoons and coming up with his own comic book ideas. He even started a cartoon club in the library at primary school - very cool!

Matt loves creating bursting-with-emotion, jump-off-the-page characters, obsessing about details, and taking inspiration from history

Matt has a versatile style and would love to illustrate middle grade, picture books, historical non-fiction and book covers.

Very few books about my country, Syria, are written and illustrated by Syrians. My dream project is to write and illustrated a story that represents the proud of heritage of Syria, and the resillence of our people with my own voice, because authentic and empowered representation matters.”

Nia Tudor is a Carnegie Medal and Klaus Flugge Longlisted children’s illustrator living and working along the Welsh Coast in South Wales, UK.

Nia enjoys exploring different illustration styles, and creating illustrations that are fulll of texture and filled with small details Nia enjoys capturing the fun and energy of everyday life and nature in her work, as well as depicting heartfelt and intricate family scenes.

When she’s not drawing, Nia enjoys talking to herself, going on family adventures, and watching far too many series at one time.

ABOUTTHEILLUSTRATOR

Ryan Hammond is an author-illustrator who grew up in leafy Sheffield, surrounded by nature and bad influences. By day he is a children’s book designer and by night he’s busy drawing and writing down all of his ideas. He currently lives in South Yorkshire, surrounded by lots of books and identifies as part of the LGBTQ+ community.

He likes quirky characters, chaotic scenes and representing everyone that feels like they are different or weird. He has a keen eye for detail and often channels his passion for fun and mischievousness into his work. He works in a mixture of traditional and digital art forms, and has a particular proclivity for black and white interiors.

His aim is to make sure children enjoy reading for the fun of it and that his characters are reflective of the world we live in – even those with villainous streaks. He is yet to be convinced that bad characters are not the best

ABOUTTHEILLUSTRATOR

For as long as she can remember, Sally has had a passion for drawing and painting. She loves working with colour, texture, and pattern, and aims to bring a bit of everyday magic to her illustrations. Sally spent ten years living in Sweden working as a Print Designer for fashion companies, before returning to the UK and kick-starting her career in children's book illustration. Her debut picture book 'The Queen Next Door', published by Hachette, has been shortlisted for the Waterstones Children's Book Prize 2024

ABOUTTHEILLUSTRATOR

Sojung Kim-McCarthy is a Korean-British children's book author-illustrator based in Dorset, UK. She was brought up on stories in a family of artists, writers, actors, TV & musical directors.

After studying VisComm (BFA) at Hong-ik University, she worked as a designer-in-chief for a leading children’s magazine as well as a children’s art and design educator. She moved to the UK in 2010 to study Illustration (MA) at Arts University Bournemouth and has been working as an illustrator ever since.

Sojung has won a World Illustration Award with her Minari movie postcard illustrations.

She has also been highly commended for both the FAB Prize and the Macmillan Prize, as well as being longlisted for the House of Illustration & Folio Society Book Illustration Competition.

Soofiya is a visual artist, illustrator, writer and design educator. Their work aims to provide a commentary on race, gender non-conformity and not fitting in.

Soofiya's colourful illustrations bring to life taboo and often complex subjects, but in a warm, approachable, and playful manner. Their clients include Tate, Barbican, Vice, BBC and many more. Soofiya's zines and books have been showcased and archived internationally, including by Tate Britain, Wellcome Collection and National Poetry Library, and their writing has been featured in Can We All Be Feminists (Virago 2018).

Theo Parish is an author/illustrator currently living in ‘the fine city’ of Norwich with their three cats. Graduating from Norwich university of the Arts with both undergraduate and postgraduate degrees in games art and design, they have a great love of storytelling in all forms.

Choosing to see the magical in the mundane and to bring a sense of wonder to everything they do, Theo’s work is inspired by Saturday morning cartoons, long walks through the woods, their love of fantasy and their life and experiences growing up queer and neurodivergent. They are driven by a passion for creating the kinds of stories they needed to see as a kid and are committed to putting those used to being on the sidelines into centre stage.

When not drawing or writing they can usually be found playing dungeons and dragons, building pillow forts or making friends with the neighbourhood cats.

Working on YA and middle-grade fantasy, magic, stories with LGBTQ+ themes, non-fiction and natural history.

Zanna Goldhawk
