Who is Phylis Daly ? By Sunny JUDDY Phyllis Daly is a professional job-seeker turned philanthropist from Limerick who is well known for her charitable fundraising. She is a single hardworking volunteer who is one of three children, with one sister and one brother and is a full time carer for her mum. Phyllis is a Virgo and is very spiritual in her beliefs. Phyllis hosted a fundraiser for GAP - Galway Autism Partnership in Jan 2014 at the Clayton. Over €13k was raised for the charity with over 1,000 in attendance. She has hosted

rub’s up as the 4th annual Galway Food Festival takes place over the Easter bank holiday weekend. From Thursday April 2nd to Monday April 6th, the city will celebrate its culinary culture for five festive days of open-air markets, food trails and family fun.
by Avril HORAN Last year, over 70,000 people attended the festival including the festival food village at the Spanish Arch; the Galway, Moycullen and Woodquay Country Markets and a packed programme of talks, tours, tastings, demonstrations and workshops involving over 100 restaurants, food outlets and food producers located across the city and County. This year’s festival will see the return of all the above, along with lots of new and exciting additions. Plans for 2015 include an extended food trail, a foodtruck village in the West End, a new location for the ever popular cooking demonstrations and an expansion of the

eclectic programme of Food Tours. The 2015 festival will also seek to build on Galway’s emergence as a food capital of the Wild Atlantic Way through

I am all excited as I am speaking to the person who invented ‘the craic’! Broadcaster Seán Bán Breathnach is credited with popularising the word and bringing it back into everyday use thanks to his catchphrase ‘Beidh ceol, caint agus craic againn’- which opened his popular Irish language chat show SBB ina Shuí, broadcast on RTÉ from 1976 to 1982. Now SBB ina Shuí is back, albeit in a new format at the Town Hall Theatre onThursday, April 16th at 8pm.
The original SBB in a Shuí - a“simple mix of pop, rock and traditional music” took off in the seventies and lasted for eight years. Not only did he present the show unscripted, it also brought out the daredevil in him. He lay on a bed of nails holding a plank, while a motorcyclist drove over him and he motorcycled through a ring of fire, having never been on a bike before. His one regret was missing out on an opportunity to introduce the country to The Boomtown Rats.

“I was young and mad,” he says, “and had a few narrow escapes! I had a hole in my back for a long time! My one regret was the Boomtown Rats. We went to see them and didn’t think they were good enough! Next thing they were on the Late Late with Gaybo.
“It’s a mix of country and traditional music, along with dancing, and I am the compere,” he explains. “We filled the Town Hall twice before and we hope to do it again. It is only a few years ago that someone rang me and told me I was responsible for the‘craic’. Sure we used it all the time!”

I am not mad about them even now!” The native Irish speaker was encouraged back from London, where he was working as a DJ, for his first live and unscripted pop radio show in 1969 at the age of 20. “Radio is my first love,” he says, “and always will be.” Those who know Seán will not be surprised to learn he played ‘Je T’aime’ on the national airwaves at a time when it was banned in many countries. For those too young to go back that far, Seán is best known for his sports broadcasting career, which has spanned the decades. He is a radio na gaeltachta stalwart who has brought sporting triumphs and failures into every home in Ireland. His raw emotion while commentating as Katie Taylor was crowned Olympic champion went viral. “Sport is my passion,” he explains, “but I wouldn’t listen back to the Katie Taylor piece now. I don’t know why, did people really think I put it on? I have always had a passion for sport and I’d nearly do the same for a 5-a-side underage game at my own club! I’d probably be just as excited.” While covering a different boxing event, he narrowly avoided a run in with outspoken world middleweight champion, Chris Eubank. Chris’ reign would come to an end at the hands of Irish boxer Steve Collins, but not until Collins gave a speech at a press conference ‘as gaeilge’, scripted by Seán Ban Breathnach. Eubank was highly offended at the use of the native tongue and promptly walked out. “Steve asked me to write it for him,” explains Seán, “but Eubank felt he was being insulted by the language. I ended up in a lift with Eubank on the way down to the foyer! I did explain to him about the language, how it came
about and how old it is and I’d like to think he felt a bit better about it all. It was a great scoop!” Among his many highlights is his coverage of the Michelle Smith saga during the Atlanta Olympic games. Ireland’s most successful Olympian, the swimmer became a triple gold medallist before she was embroiled in a doping scandal. The allegations were never proven, however she received a ban for tampering with a urine sample, ending her career. “I still believe to this day she is not guilty, she was never proven guilty and she kept her medals,” he says. “Jimmy
McGee backs me up on this one. The Americans were lining up for her at the press conference and I just broke through, grabbed the mic, and spoke to her in Irish.” Not one to miss an opportunity, he also sent home a fine piece of broadcasting when he recorded the announcements made at the Atlanta underground – known as Martha. “I thought it was so funny,” he says, “I deliberately went back and got it”. ‘You have reached Atlanta North Station. Thank you for riding Martha’.

On Saturday, April 4th, Seven will come to life with bigger, more alternative DJ nights, original, up and coming bands and guaranteed live entertainment every Thursday til Sunday. The new space is set to have a bright, funky and contemporary feel, with an arty vibe throughout, reflecting a modern Galway. The interior has been completely refurbished, incorporating earthy mahogony, leather and tartan with bright custom made wall visuals and a bar front made out of tin tiles. She sang the Bob Dylan classic, Forever Young and captured the hearts of a legion of new fans. Now she is coming back to her county to perform at Monroe’s Live on Thursday, April 9th at 8pm. On the show Tom commented, “I think there is something that happens when you get older and experience from life. If you can express it through your voice then you need to have lived a while and that is what I am getting from you. I don’t think a young girl could sing like you sing. They haven’t lived long enough.” She has been hotly tipped as one to watch as she furthers her way

ne of the many fun things about video game fans is how they each slot into their own separate groups, and in turn form the friendly gaming communities of Galway City. From the huge amounts of people who gather regularly for games like Street Fighter and Super Smash Bros. to the smaller, more humble communities that support Tekken; they all enjoy playing their own personal favourite games. However, not every game can be this popular. There are also those that couldn’t sustain their own communities. Mortal Kombat is among those.

each other with their chosen ninja. Unfortunately, Mortal Kombat’s community in Galway City was short lived. It consisted of a few diehard players, but never managed to expand beyond that. From time to time, there are still whispers of the Kombat Krew throughout the City’s various gaming events. All of this could change in the next two weeks though as the game’s latest instalment, Mortal Kombat X, hits the shelves for Playstation 4 and Xbox One. This promises to be the best addition to the series so far, featuring a huge range of characters and an in-depth storyline with which to tell its epic tale. There is a great air of excitement surrounding this one as old players begin to get in touch again and the people who are invested in other great games take an interest in it. The anticipation for this game seems to be running quite high, and it brings with it the idea that the Kombat Krew may not have disappeared for good. Perhaps Galway City will see have resurgence of Mortal Kombat players and a run of new tournaments to accompany them in the near future.

How did you get involved in JCI? I had entered some of the projects run by JCI Galway - the Outstanding Young Person and Galway Young Entrepreneur Award. I saw the great work done by the organisation and wanted to give something back. Tell me about Junior Chamber. JCI is a worldwide organisation of 18-40 years. It centres around Personal Development, Business Development, Community Involvement and International Events. JCI offers its members opportunities in each area. JCI Galway has been in Galway for over 50 years. What kind of local events will you be organising this year?

You have the opportunity to attend world events such as the European Conference in Istanbul in June, which a contingent from Galway will be attending. There are fantastic networking opportunities as well as many members work with big companies. What kind of training opportunities do you provide? JCI offers monthly training - from goal setting to effective meetings, public speaking and how to network. JCI offers a platform for you to run a project that you care about. It had the resources and team there to help you get your idea off the ground. Last year one of our members wanted to bring a mini-web summit / Ted talks style event to Galway - JCI got behind him and we held the event in December called TechGate.

My name is Alice and well…. I was out taking my cat for a walk and I fell down a rabbit hole. I never knew rabbits had such big holes but this one could fit me inside it. I ended up in some place that was quite dark at first but then I found a talking door…..yes a talking door and it made me drink something that made me huge and then very tiny and then normal sized I swear I yo-yoed more than Oprah on one of those stupid diets that don’t work! Anyway when I was extra tiny I managed to get through the doors keyhole, which the door didn’t like one bit because I had flooded his room with my giant tears. I then met these two very strange men that had some strong feelings about oysters and told me a story about how some baby oysters had been murdered by a seal so I was careful not to
mention the oyster festival. I then met a rather confusing Cheshire cat that would not give me satisfactory directions as to how to get out of this odd place. I thought the caterpillar might be more helpful but he really needs to give up smoking as all he could focus on was blowing smoke rings and asking me who the hell I was! He definitely has some anger issues and don’t get me started on those rude singing flowers. I know it probably wasn’t wise but I also stopped for tea party with a mad man and now I’m on my way to try and find the queen of hearts maybe she has a map I could borrow. I was lucky I found a copy of craic magazine down here it made me feel at home.

love vintage style. I love the glamour and music from the 1920s to the 50s and the gorgeous hairstyles and clothing that accompanied the era. Now I am picturing old Hollywood glam, the pin curls and victory rolls, the pencil and swing skirts that shaped the decades and which I would so love to be able to recreate.

So enamoured am I that I asked my talented friend, Vicky Seaman from Cork, to twist and twirl our hair into vintage inspired looks on my good self and my bridesmaids for my wedding day. As she says herself, she isn’t a hairdresser, she just has a passion for the retro look and was kind enough to take on a gaggle of women and a bride. It’s a skill that I just haven’t got and would love to learn. With that in mind, I was delighted when invited to Dublin for a ‘Locks and Lashes’ vintage hair and make-up event. It took place at the Cats Meow vintage shop at 74 Francis Street, Dublin 8. I wasn’t sure what to expect as we sat down amidst a plethora of colourful clothing.

With a glass of prosecco in hand and plenty of munchies, we watched as the select few were transformed into sultry sirens before our eyes. Only three were in line for a vintage makeover, as we had to pick a number, and hope that it would be chosen. These lucky gals became the models and we were able to watch and learn as they were primped to vintage perfection. Once styled from the shoulders up, an outfit was selected for them from the shop, right down to the accessories. Being clueless in the hair and make-up department, I managed to pick up a few tips, from how best to apply eyeliner to a simple tricks for an easy up do. For this event, they focused on the ‘50s and ‘60s, and so the victory roll remains elusive, but if they host another event from the ‘40s, I will definitely go back. I did find an awesome vintage dress, which has already been worn to a ball. I think I will skip the ‘70s come back that is currently all the rage and stick with learning more about an era that I love.

By Dara KELLY a career break from TG4 to work as a freelance presenter for a while. I’d love to travel this year and to start on a new project or two. I’m really looking forward to starting a new chapter. What do you do for the Craic in Galway? There’s a great choice of restaurants in Galway and I love going for a meal with friends and family, with maybe a bit of dancing afterwards. Galway has a great live music scene, especially in summer, so I go to gigs whenever I can. What is Galway’s best kept secret? I think people forget that there’s a wealth of culture and craic outside of Galway city. For example, Tigh Giblin in An Spidéal has brilliant live music. You can spend a very pleasant evening enjoying a fine meal surrounded by top quality traditional music.
TRANSLATION Are you originally from Galway? Where do you live now? Yes! I was born and raised in Indreabhán and I’m still living there. Myself and my husband renovated my grandmother’s house and moved in just before Christmas. What do you do workwise? I’m a TV presenter. I’ve been working with TG4 for 7 years now. I’m currently presenting GLEO, a new show for teenagers and Rugbaí Beo, live coverage of the Guinness Pro12 series and European Championship
highlights. Who or what inspired you in your chosen career? I was always into acting but after school I trained as a primary school teacher. I spent an enjoyable year teaching and then I had an opportunity to do a presenting course in TG4. After a week on that course, with 7 others, I was lucky enough to be chosen as presenter for Cúla4 and I’ve been here ever since!
