This year’s flagship exhibition will be ‘Dreaming Vessels’ by the Galway Chapter of the Irish Woodturners’Guild, in the Hardiman Research Building. This is a giant installation presenting the form of a Claddagh Hooker, overlaid with individual turned bowls or vessels, raising questions on the nature and value of handmade objects today. “Our theme this year, ‘Float Away’, reminds us that a brush with the creative arts can be a sweet release from the routine and pressures of everyday life and may be the dawning of a new adventure. Everyone is welcome to participate.” says Fionnuala Gallagher, NUI Galway Arts Officer All exhibitions are open Monday to Saturday. Love on Galway Bay A thousand splendid love poems, free verse and limericks too. We heard of monogamous lovers, and Yeats’ descent into loveless blues.

For those of you still single, remember the words of Galway Girl. Have a look down in Carbon, where she may be waiting for that twirl.

Love was written as a fairy tale; and smiles caused dancing in the rain. One glimpse of a traveling stranger; a mysterious lover lost to a Heuston train.

This Saturday love is moonlight, and hearts will never go astray. It’s the Craic in Galway City, the reason why poets should be shouting out our name.

They wrote of love on an emerald island, yet forgot the tides of Galway Bay. The greens and reds of Mayo, but no Spanish Arch made their historic black ink stains. Here’s tribute to the lovers, who’ll take a stroll down Kirwan’s Lane. Link arms past Shop Street’s buskers, here in Galway this Valentine’s Day. So take your partner along to Murphy’s, have a pint along the beloved Quays. At night we’ll glance across the skyline, where Monroe’s will light up Galway Bay.

“Would you have a poem about love for Valentine’s Day?” I cheekily asked young Tuam writer, Ryan Mangan. He didn’t, but in a short few hours created one especially for Craic in Galway readers Love on Galway Bay. Ryan has been selected to take part in the world’s biggest international spoken word festival in Atlanta and it is the first time that Ireland will be represented.

Straight talking from the trailor trash mouth of Southern Belle, Candy, and the more refined Cara from Connemara. By Cara LYONS

Dear Candy:

Where the hell were you in the last issue? I kept flicking through the pages again and again thinking that they may be stuck together but you weren’t there! I was going crazy thinking you were never coming back! Where do you live so I can send mail to your house? And special presents…..and my hair. I just want to bake you cakes of love and cover you in my icing. I

Candy: Well if you ain’t crazier than a sack of honey badgers in heat! Don’t worry I have to deal with you kind of people all the time. What you don’t know is that you ain’t just a stalker, you’ve got some kind of obsessive demon in you! My mamma always said if a man ever starts sending you pieces of himself, or some other creature in the mail as a statement of love, well then he’s

think we would be so perfect together. You make me feel like I’m a Pegasus flying through heart shaped clouds. You have dunked me in your tea of romance and part of me has gotten soft and fallen in and now I’m waiting for you to find me with your love spoon. Please write back. I will be waiting.

www.lovefromcara.com got a demon in him. You gotta get naked and cover yourself in syrup, then you have got to find a red ants nest, put some broken glass on the ground and lie down next to them for three hours, then you got to find some African bees and make them real angry so they can sting the poison outta you. Finally you have cover yourself in leeches and drink vinegar for 20 minutes.

Cara: Ok. How do I say this delicately. You have developed an unnatural obsession with Candy. She does not know you nor does she wish to. You could be missing some other fulfilment in your life or something traumatic may

have happened to cause you to have these obsessive behaviours. You need to seek professional help immediately and please do not contact Candy again. Or we may have to open a can of whup ass!

Advice for Guys this Valentines

T

he Galway Player is the self proclaimed top dating expert in Ireland. Here he shares his top 5 tips for guys this Valentines day. 1: Be Confident. You don’t need to be Christian Grey to melt a girl’s heart. One of the most attractive qualities a man can possess is confidence, and I should know. I have it in spades. My research has found that many women find high self esteem almost as attractive as a large bank balance. 2: Be Interested. As you know, men are visual creatures. Women, on the other hand ,just aren’t as shallow as us guys - and actually consider your personality when sizing you up. Good listening is an essential skill and have topics ready to discuss on a date. I always focus on her TITS - Travel, Interests, Television and Shopping. 3: Know Who to Approach: It is going to be pretty easy to spot the single ones on Valentine’s weekend. A lot of girls will be out for fun, but some are looking for a husband. Before you have finished your first

pint she is sizing up how you will look in the wedding photos, if the two of you will get a decent mortgage, and whether your genes will produce good offspring. 4: Dress to Impress: Most Irish lads still look like they are dressed by their mammies when they head out. Bring a female friend shopping to shake up your wardrobe. You know the way we check out girls, well they kinda do that too lads. Give yourself the best possible chance of being noticed. Ditch the checked shirts. 5: Be a Gentleman: One thing I am famous for is treating a lady to the time of her life when she is in my company. Always remember, it’s nice to be nice! Call her a taxi the next morning and throw her a tenner for the ride home. For more follow galwayplayer on facebook, twitter, instagram and www.galwayplayer.com. just came back to Galway from a magical long weekend trip to Bristol and Bath in England. I was invited to Bristol by a really good friend of mine : Slovakian singer, dancer, actor and event producer, Zacharias Hubacek , or simply ZACK, who first came to fame with a reality TV talent show called Superstar in Slovakia 10 years ago. He recently played in a show called Walking the Chains - a brand new circus-theatre show, being staged at Brunel’s Passenger Shed at Temple Meads Station, Bristol, about Clifton Suspension Bridge. Zack took me to a very cosy underground club called the Bristol Dub Club. It has a vintage interior design with a Dj theme. There is a massive wall full of old sound systems, walls decorated with vinyl covers, a smoking garden full of paintings. I am currently studying

W

e all want to be healthy, right? But, what do you do to be

healthy?

For me, we have to be fit first, and then the rest follows. I say this by my own experience. I wasn’t fit at all. I was a bit large. My nutrition was a disaster and my triglycerides were very high. I wasn’t able to go up and down the stairs without being tired, the same when walking for long distances. Also I suffered from back and feet pain and heartburn. Now, as a result of being large, I wasn’t getting many looks or compliments. This had my confidence and selfesteem on the floor. It was mentally affecting me; therefore, it was affecting my well-being. After a few months, I got the solution to all of those problems. I got into a better nutrition plan and into a training program. I started getting fit. I was getting faster, I wasn’t getting tired every time I walked, I could go up and down the stairs without being

tired. I slimmed down and I started getting looks and compliments. As a result, my confidence and selfesteem went higher than they used to be. I was happier and less stressed. So, now I could say that, I am a healthy person. I ask you, are you a healthy person? Are you fit? Are you happy with yourself? Are you happy with your body? Do you have any of those problems? If so, start giving the first step to change your life and being a healthy person. Get your nutritional plan and your training program. Start shaping your life.

apanese anime and manga is drawing a large following in Galway, culminating in our very own Akumakon Festival, which took place in the city last month. We spoke to Conor Roberts to find out what the appeal of the culture is to those in the west of Ireland. Why are people drawn to Japanese anime, manga and culture here in Galway? The main appeal of anime and manga would be it’s uniqueness. The art style of the various shows is only found in Japan, and stands out compared to American shows. Also, the variety of subject matter is enormous! Some shows are fantasy and space epics, others are about the daily lives of people just going about their days. They can be funny,

sad, and everything in between! We have a shared appreciation for distinct yet interrelated aspects of Japanese culture, while anchored in a shared love for Japanese animation and fashion. However it diverges into many different elements, for example food, live-action film, martials arts, music and the art of cosplay. How did you become interested in it? I became interested in anime by attending the anime society in NUIG. The people there were very welcoming, and they showed a great variety of shows. I got so interested that I joined their committee, and helped out with the Akumakon convention, which was a great experience. How was Akumakon 2015? Essentially for that weekend, we transformed the NUIG area into

CRAICing Q&A Akihabara, Tokyo, bringing elements of the east to the west. We had screenings of a wide variety of anime over the weekend, a fire-show, which has always attracted considerable attention, a large amount of cosplay/fashion events, a maid cafe, discussion panels and the construction of models from your favourite mecha (robot), as well as video and card gaming events. What does Akumakon mean? It doesn’t really mean anything, as far as I know. Apparently Kuma means bear in Japanese, so the original committee probably went from there, for whatever reason! Sorry I don’t know much more!

However, with 78 countries taking parts, twelve hours simply wasn’t going to cut it; so the Global Game Jam spanned a two day time frame. For 48 long hours straight, teams of developers worked hard together to produce a barrage for original, exciting and initiative video games. There were all sorts of different games created throughout the weekend including space themed dating simulators, tile based music games and sci-fi shooters, to name but a few. Some games were made with the idea of being

Mo Ghrá Thú, a Ghaillimh! Ar nós na mílte duine romham, tháinig mé go Gaillimh ar feadh sé mhí agus sé bliana dhéag ina dhiaidh sin, táim fós anseo! Ach céard atá chomh mealltach faoin gcathair seo go dtiteann daoine i ngrá léi is nach mbíonn siad ábalta í a fhágáil? Is iomaí rud draíochta fúithi ach seo na cinn is mó a mheall mise. 1. Suíomh & leagan amach na cathrach: tá an chathair chomh beag gur féidir í a shiúl i leathuair. Ní féidir siúl síos Sráid na Siopaí gan castáil le cara. Tá sé thar a bheith éasca do bhealach a dhéanamh thart i gcarr freisin, agus neart áiteanna le páirceáil ann. Deir muintir na Gaillimhe go mbíonn an trácht go dona, ach i gcomparáid le cathracha eile, ní tada é! Tá Gaillimh ar an gcósta, ar ndóigh, agus tá abhainn agus canáil i lár na cathrach. Ní bhíonn tú níos mó ná 15 nóiméad ó uisce, cuma cá dtosaíonn tú amach. 2. Cultúr: tá Gaillimhe lofa le féilte, idir dhrámaíocht, scannáin, oisirí, rásaí capall, agus na healaíona, bíonn rud éigin spéisiúil ar siúl chuile mhí. Is i nGaillimh atá an Ghaeltacht is mó sa tír, chomh maith le TG4 agus ceanncheathrú Raidió na Gaeltachta. Tá cultúr Gaelach le fáil go héasca sa Taibhdhearc, in Árus na nGael agus in go leor áiteanna eile ar fud an chontae. Tá chuile chineál spóirt, damhsa agus caitheamh aimsire ar fáil i nGaillimh, gan trácht ar chúrsaí ceoil.

Tá sorcas pobail anseo fiú! Nílim in ann smaoineamh ar ghníomhaíocht ar bith nach féidir a dhéanamh i nGaillimh. 3. Iléagsúlacht: tá daoine as gach áit ar domhan ina gcónaí i nGaillimh agus bíonn turasóirí le feiceáil an t-am ar fad. Is iontach an rud é na ciníocha éagsúla a fheiceáil – roinnt acu ag casadh ceol traidisiúnta nó ag labhairt Gaeilge! Tá a gcuid teangacha, ceoil, damhsa agus bia tugtha leo ag na daoine a chuir fúthu i nGaillimh, rud a chuireann saibhreas iontach leis an gcathair. Nua-Eabhrac beag bídeach atá againn, a bhuíochas do na daoine a tháinig isteach ón iliomad tíortha. Míle fáilte rompu. 4. Traidisiúin speisialta na Gaillimhe: siúl ar an bProm agus cic a thabhairt don bhalla; greim bia a fháil sa mhargadh Dé Sathairn; léim isteach sa bhfarraige ón ardán ag gCarraig Dhubh; éadaí breátha a chur ort agus dul chuig na rásaí; banna ceoil a fheiceáil sna Quays, sa Róisín nó Monroe’s; seisiún ceoil traidisiúnta san Árus, tigh Taaffe nó Tí Chóilí; féachaint ar na buskers ar Shráid na Siopaí; do scíth a ligean ag an bPóirse Spáinneach nó ar an bhFaiche Mhór lá samhraidh; thar aon ní eile; castáil le cairde agus caint. Is iad na daoine a choinníonn cuairteoir i nGaillimh - an dream is fáiltiúla, is spraíúla agus is cairdiúla dá bhfaca mé riamh. >>>

I love you, Galway! >>> Like thousands before me, I came to Galway for six months and after sixteen years, I’m still here! What is so mesmerising about this city that blowins fall in love with it and are unable to leave? Galway has many magical elements – here are the ones that captivated me. 1. Location & layout of the city: the city centre is so compact you can circumnavigate it in half an hour. You can’t walk down Shop Street without meeting someone you know. It’s easy to get around by car too, with plenty of parking spaces. Galwegians claim that the traffic is a nightmare, but compared to other cities, it’s nothing! Galway is on the coast, course, with a river and a canal flowing through the city centre. You are never more than 15 minutes away from water, no matter where you start out. 2. Culture: Galway is positively

Translation

riddled with festivals. Between drama, film, oysters, horse racing and the arts, there is always something going on. Galway is home to the largest Gaeltacht in the country, as well as TG4 and the headquarters of Raidió na Gaeltachta. Gaelic theatre and music is regularly available in An Taibhdhearc, Árus na nGael and many other venues all over the county. Every imaginable sport, dance and pastime is found in Galway, and don’t get me started on the music scene! There’s even a community circus. I’m unable to think of a single activity that can’t be done in Galway. 3. Diversity: people from all over the world live in Galway and tourists come here all year round. It’s fantastic to see people of so many different races around – some of them playing trad music and speaking Irish! They’ve brought their own languages, music,

dance and food with them, greatly enriching our city. It’s a melting pot – a mini New York, thanks to the new Galwegians from all over the world. They are very welcome. 4. Galway traditions: walking the Prom and kicking the wall; grabbing a crepe or falafel in the Saturday market; jumping into the sea from Blackrock diving board; dressing up and going to the Races; going to a gig in The Quays, the Róisín or Monroe’s, catching a trad session in the Árus, Taaffe’s or Tí Chóilí; watching the buskers on Shop Street; chilling out at Spanish Arch or Eyre Square on a Summer’s day; above all, meeting friends and talking. It’s the people who keep visitors in Galway – the most welcoming, fun and friendly people I’ve ever met.

Workout Wear Are you finding it hard to keep up new years resolutions to get fit? Many of us might be slacking coming up to spring. I propose that we update our sportswear collection, because if we are wearing something we feel good in, it will encourage us to wear and use them more often. My picks can all be mixed and matched and used for whatever your workout may be. The most important part of any workout outfit is trainers. I found this pair of Nike Roshe Run in Schuh. These are great for workouts, but can also be worn with a pair of ripped jeans to be comfortably fashionable on a daily basis as trainers are considered a staple style item. Don’t be afraid to go for colour with your trainers too because there are so many kinds out there now that you’re sure to find the pair to suit your personality. Remember buy the trainers that suit the purpose. The outfit is the most fun part! The colours and patterns are getting louder and more fashionable and they’re easy to pair with other pieces. This two piece from New Look is perfect for getting a sweat on! With our weather a jacket is essential to outdoor activity. This zip-up from Elverys Sport comes in this sweet turquoise colour. Just looking at it makes you want to wear it and it

is guaranteed to keep you warm if you’re walking, running or doing an outdoors workout! Busy girls around Galway are naturally going to need a handbag (the most exciting part of any outfit!) to carry you’re smoothies, towels and gym gear in. This tote from Lifestyle Sports doesn’t look like your regular gym bag. It is disguised as a regular tote. And really, can we ever have too many handbags? The last item I would recommend is not part of your outfit but is essential for your workout and comes in a range of colours! It’s the Bobble bottle from Evergreen; a clever bottle that filters the water as you drink it, which save you money on buying bottled water, money that can be well spent on your spring wardrobe.
