he “best young rally talent in the country” Dean Raftery was among the crowd at the launch of the Galway International Rally at Colm Quinn’s BMW showroom on the Tuam Road. The rally takes place from February 6th-8th. Dean, from Craughwell, recently scooped the Billy Coleman award as the Young Rally Driver of the Year and described it as “the next step in my career”. “The recognition alone is so huge and it means an awful lot to win the award,” Dean told the gathered crowd as details of this year’s rally were announced. He spoke of how he began his rallying career at the age of 8 by karting and that it was “the best way to start”. He aims to get “as much experience as I can” in the World European Championships and on the world stage. The challenging course in the 2015 Colm Quinn BMW Galway International Rally will take competitors across 14 stages in south
Galway and is the opening round of the ClonakiltyBlackpudding Irish Tarmac Rally Championship. Sponsor Colm Quinn welcomed everyone to “the most modern BMW showroom and retail outlet in the world”. He thanked the 350 volunteers who work behind the scenes and admitted he had “no idea” what went into planning a rally “until I got involved”. The Galway International Rally has partnered with the charity Domestic Violence Response and co-ordinator Elizabeth Power said she was “delighted to be the charity designate”. “It is an issue that causes such devastation in people’s lives,” she explained, and the money raised will “increase education and awareness”. City Mayor, Cllr Donal Lyons spoke of how the rally has grown “from strength to strength” since its inception in 1971 and will bring “a lot of visitors to the city and county”. “It is a major attraction with drivers from all over Europe,” he said, “and it brings great prominence to Galway city and county.

Shir Madness bringing Burlesque festival to Galway city

hir Madness (27) is an extraordinary hula hooper. She was raised in France and is currently living in Dublin. I was absolutely mesmerised by her performance, beauty and talent when she performed her show Alice’s Revenge at Monroe’s Live for the Galway Fringe Festival 2014 and had to find out more about her. Here, she tells us about her creative talent and the Galway Burlesque Festival 2015.
in terms of performances. I really focused on burlesque and performed at several burlesque festivals in Ireland and abroad. I placed third at the Belfast Burlesque Festival, which was a big deal for me because I don’t do competitions very often. I love Burlesque Festivals - they are a great way to meet other performers, and to learn from them and improve on your skills. They are also ideal for networking!
What inspired you to start hula hooping and when did you start for the first time ?
The application forms are all online, on the Facebook page of the Galway Burlesque Festival, or you can email us at galwayburlesquefestival@gmail.com and we’ll send you all the information. Anyone can apply, the shows are all competitions; there are different categories for beginners and established performers, and the winners are decided by public vote and a panel of judges. The deadline to apply is April 5th.
I started hooping by accident. I randomly picked up a hoop at a house party 3 years ago and never stopped. I am self taught, I learned watching videos on youtube, I’d say my greatest inspiration is a performer called Lisa Lottie. What is your favourite costume?
Can you tell me about the burlesque festival in September? Who can apply?
It’s always the costume I’m currently working on that’s my favourite! When it’s finished the next one becomes my new baby. At the moment it’s my Valentine’s costume, it’s red and black and covered in rhinestones that I have to glue one by one.
The festival will run from 18th to 20th of September, and I can’t tell you the whole program yet but there will be several shows, a craft and vintage market and many workshops over the weekend.

I
n the tribute band world, Led Zeppelin are one of the hardest bands to emulate, largely due to Robert Plants incredible theatrical wailing vocals and Jimmy Pages unique approach to guitar solos. I climb the stairway of Monroe’s Live venue to check out Galway based Zeppelin tribute band No Stairway. The band members come from different musical backgrounds and influences, when these guys get together as No Stairway the results are incredible. The lead singer, Steven Sharpe completely captures Robert Plants’ octave soaring voice with great detail at the same time with total ease, he also had his postures and moves choreographed like a well drilled understudy. The large crowd seemed astonished at this

singer’s ability from Black Dog to a Whole Lotta Love - everyone trying to position themselves to get the best view of the band. The lead guitarist played Jimmy Pages mixalydian rock scales with the same spider hand technique every note and bend could be heard. No stairway do it as it says on the tin meaning they don’t play Stairway to Heaven. I was hoping they would, although the song is a rock cliché it is still a masterpiece and I would love to see what justice this band could bring to it. No Stairway with the help of the EQ wizard soundman Ed Kenehan, gave everyone a fantastic Led Zeppelin audio experience. Next time this band plays in Galway I highly recommend you check them out. Many scientific research proves that the results we get after training are composed of 70% diet and 30% exercise. Let’s say we make some replacements; for example, replace white bread for brown or whole grain bread. In just a couple of weeks you’ll see some changes in your body. But make sure the brown bread you get isn’t make with dextrose, sucrose, fructose, sugar, or any type of sugar, because this will hinder the results you could get. Yes, added-sugar will make you fat. We have to remove added sugar (refined sugar) from our nutrition. Thats the one the body, most times, turn into fat, but

Eating healthy is very important, it will help you feel, look and perform better, and, of course, have a longer life. This is the first step you must do to get into a healthier lifestyle. You’ll change your life. You’ll be a happier person, more active and fitter. You’ll trust in yourself and your self-esteem will be higher. You’ll start loving yourself.
