A

mini music festival, featuring iRocks winners Rofi James and The Connectors, is set to hit these shores this February – and all for a good cause. Corrib Live, an event organised by the VTOS Sound Production students, will raise money for Voices for Down Syndrome Galway and Waterside House. It is set for Friday, February 13th and will host top musical acts and entertainment, along with finger food and spot prizes.

It’s the second year for the Corrib Live event and the organisers are in the midst of planning for the gig, which will take place at the Commercial Boat Club from 7pm. The students have different tasks, as it will test their skills in event planning and production. “It’s been stressful, but good fun,” explains one of the organisers Padraig McMahon.

4

“It’s not an easy task to undertake and we are all working together. We want to establish this as a yearly event that will make a name for itself in its own right and it will have its own identity. This year it will be great value, as we plan to charge €5 entry only. “It’s for two great causes and I really wanted to get involved. And it goes a long way towards what we are trying to learn here as students on this course. We will get experience setting up for live bands and all of us wouldn’t be here if we didn’t love music. “Both charities need a lot of money to run and if we can help in any way then that is a great achievement,” he says. For more information, or to help with sponsorship you can email corriblive15@gmail.com or check out Facebook, Corrib Live - where you can purchase your tickets. in GALWAY

I

t’s no secret that playing video games is a fun pass time. It’s a hobby that takes time and skill, which makes it all the more rewarding. However, it’s rare that you get to see what happens behind the scenes and how exactly you’re favourite games are made. Galway’s Pulse College specialises in creating video games. The local developer scene is an interesting one, and provides an entirely different gaming experience in the city when compared to the local communities of players. Lately, the college held their latest event called the Galway Game Jam. This saw a crowd of indie game creators turning up to take part in an all-day challenge. The idea is simple- turn up, meet new people, and make a game within a tight time frame. Artists, developers, coders and composers were slotted into random teams and told that they had twelve

10

hours to create a game from the ground up about the event’s main theme; hidden worlds. The team that build the best game by the end of the day would win a prize. The day was long, but seeing people change walls of code into fully functional games really was a sight to behold. The teams made games of all genres, from platformers to space exploration. There were some really cool and imaginative ideas. Some of which looked and worked fantastically. The Galway Game Jam is a great way for developers to meet up and spend time doing what they love, making games. It’s a calm, fun atmosphere filled with lots of brainstorming and creativity. Many people went from complete strangers to friends throughout the duration of the Jam, and will surely create games together again in the future. Perhaps even at the next Game Jam.

The last two years have been pretty crazy. A few highlights have been choreographing the winners performance of Miss Czech Slovac America 2014, dancing with The Wanted in Central Park live on Good Morning America in New York and dancing in a 4 star hotel in Malta for the summer. Are you going to organise any dance workshops in Galway soon? I might have a plan bubbling in my brain...watch this space! What’s your plan for the future ? In the next few weeks, I’m travelling to Paris for a concept video that my good friend is choreographing. After that, I’m planning on moving to London to continue my career there. Salsatrad has arrived!

T

he Normans gave us castles, the Vikings gave us walled cities, and now the new wave of creators in Galway have given us a whole new genre of music: salsatrad. Salsa has gained a firm foothold in Galway over the last decade, with live bands and DJs providing almost weekly opportunities to dance. Andres Martorell, from Uruguay, has been singing with salsa and tango bands for years. One night just over a year ago, he went for a drink in a nearby bar after a performance in Galway city centre. There was a festival atmosphere (as usual!) and he could hear salsa on one side of him and Irish trad on the other. His musician’s ear noted how the rhythms and melodies complemented each other and he asked himself, I wonder..? And so, Baile an Salsa was born. Andres enlisted 9 more talented musicians and the sound of salsatrad began

18

it’s evolution. The musicians are a true reflection of today’s Galway, hailing from Mexico, Italy, UK, USA, Spain, Cuba, Mayo, Wicklow and Drogheda. Baile an Salsa play songs that are an amalgamation of well-know Irish traditional tunes, blended with newly composed melodies in the style of salsa. The primal rhythm of salsa is provided by congas, timbales and an array of Cuban percussion instruments, the instantly recognisable salsa melodies are played on keyboards while the joyful trad element is provided by flute, tin whistle, accordion, mandolin and fiddle. Stand-up bass provides a consistent backbone for both genres. This is “bringing it all back home” Galway style with a singer from Uruguay singing sean-nós in Irish and weaving Spanish and English lyrics throughout the uplifting songs. >>>>> in GALWAY

>>>>> 2014 was a year of firsts for the band, first trad festival, first nationwide tour, first TV appearance and culminated with the launch of their first album. The album contains 12 tracks and is literally full of good vibes. It opens strongly with Irish Plena which could be a signature tune – the perfect fusion of trad and salsa. Sean-nós songs Mo Ghile Mear and Siúil a Rún are given a salsa twist and there’s a cheeky cha cha cha telling the story of Che Guevara’s visit to Kilkee in 1961. My favourite track is Rumbero Soy Yo which never fails to make me want to dance. In fact, this is Baile an Salsa’s greatest strength – their music forces you to move. It activates the primal instinct in all of us to dance and for this reason, Baile an Salsa are best appreciated live. It’s not possible to stay in your seat at a Baile an Salsa gig, as demonstrated at the launch of their album Tribu in Monroe’s last Saturday. The joint was jumping! The dancefloor was packed with people of multiple countries of origin, céilí and salsa dancing to their heart’s delight. It must truly feel like

20

home for the Galwegians of Hispanic descent, to dance to salsa music infused with trad accompanied by lyrics in Spanish. And how does it feel for the musicians, who along with the audience, smile throughout the entire gig? In the words of Rags Ferguson, percussionist: “It is an unbelievable feeling to be playing your own music with absolute passion and conviction, to be lost in full flight of the groove and to look out upon a sea of heaving, dancing bodies who are also surfing that same wave and are absolutely loving it as much as the band. It is at once very humbling and a grand feeling of hitting on and sharing something exciting and special with people. The combination of salsa and trad really makes people dance which is the best feeling a musician can have.” See videos of Baile an Salsa in action and order their album (it’s worth buying the physical CD for the sleevenotes and beautiful artwork) from the website www.baileansalsa. com. Viva la salsatrad!

Aries: ‘Listen to your true feelings’

Is someone asking you to do something against your better judgement..or talk you into doing something that is wrong? Don’t assume someone else knows better. You know best for you. Choose yourself what is right and wrong. Choose the path that makes you happy. If you are confused, talk to someone you trust. Better still, make some time to have a quiet space for yourself and ask the question in your mind. Write or draw what you see.

Taurus: ‘Practice’

Do you sometimes wonder why some people are better at things than others? Why they are so good at music/ dance/art or other things? It is simply because they take the time to practice! Take some time every day or week to practice your craft. Have patience with yourself and your teachers. As you practice, you’ll learn new methods and you’ll also enjoy yourself more. This card is a sign that practicing an interest is important for you now.

you can. Take care of yourself. This is what would matter to them most.

Your life is changing. Perhaps you feel like it is out of control. You are safe. During life, we experience many changes. As you say goodbye to the old and hello to the new, you’ll learn that change is a part of every life. You may feel sad or afraid but new friends and new people are coming into your life. Your family and old friends will always care about you and love you. Change helps you let go of things you’ve outgrown. Let them go but keep the lessons and the love and move on.

Libra: ‘Definitely Yes’

What you’ve been asking about will definitely happen. Keep your thoughts positive. When your inner guidance asks you to take action, do so. Your angels will always guide you to take positive action. Set aside doubts, stress and worry. Things are going to turn out better than you expected. Stay filled with hope and faith.

Gemini: ‘Very Soon’

Your grandparents love you very much. No matter what, you will always be connected. If your grandparents are still with you, make time to visit them and spend time with them. Learn about the past and your ancestors and history and culture. Appreciate them. If they have passed, you can still take some quiet time to talk to them and say a prayer. Honour their memories by being a good and healthy and happy person and doing the best that

Here’s a secret to a happy life: Expect the best. This is because life gives us what we expect. If you have fears about your future, your fears may come true. It’s better to feel happy about the future. Practice this by looking up at the night sky and making wishes. Trust that they’ll come true. Ask the angels for help to trust. Your inner voice may guide you to take positive action to help you manifest your dreams. It is important to listen to it. You need a good laugh! You’ve been very serious and worried lately. You’re very stressed. You need to take time to find some humour in your life and to lighten up. Laughing can be very healing. If a situation seems bad, then step away from it for a bit. Can you go watch a good movie or read a funny book? Can you meet a friend for coffee or go see a comedy gig? Share a laugh with friends and family. Life does not need to be so serious. Learn to feel joy and to laugh in life. This is what can bring joy into your life.

Cancer: ‘Best Friends’

Leo: ‘Grandparent’

Capricorn: ‘Wish upon a star’

Aquarius: ‘Laughter’

Your prayers are coming true and it will all happen for you soon. There is no need to hurry or rush or worry. Divine timing is in play and all the pieces have to fall into place first. Please don’t give up hope as you will be very happy with the lovely results! If you feel guided to take positive action (such as a class) , then that is fine and please do. Do you need to spend time with a good friend? Perhaps you had a falling out and a friendship needs mending or more attention. Take some time to contact a good friend and appreciate the gift. Sometimes people feel alone in the world. Your angels are always with you. Ask them to bring new friendships to you. We all need friends. Making the time and effort to spend with people helps to create “best friends”. Enjoy your time together.

If you’d like to make new friends, start by sharing with them. You can do this in many ways such as helping someone with work or sharing food. When we share, everyone is happy. Becoming open and sharing your feelings can make a friendship or relationship closer. Share things with others. Do you have things at home such as clothes that you never wear? Why not donate it to someone who is in need? This will bring happiness to you as well as them. As you give away things, you’ll discover a secret. As if by magic, things will start to come to you!.

Pisces: ‘Finish started’

Scorpio: ‘Let go of stress’

Don’t take on other peoples’ stress. Your body is very tense as you take on the stress of others around you. Stress makes you angry and sad. You may have had trouble sleeping. It’s time to remedy this. Breath in a gulp of air, think about things that stress you and let it all out. Stretch your arms and legs and release it all. You have the power to choose your thoughts. Think of something that makes you happy and try and hold onto that feeling.

Sagittarius: ‘Share’

what

you’ve

You’ve started something important. It’s time to complete it. At the beginning of a project, you feel excited. This gives you lots of energy. It also makes you want to spend time on the project. However, that excitement can fade and cause disinterest. It makes you want to walk away. When you have lots of unfinished projects, your mind can be scattered. The job nags at you which is not fun. This card is nudging you to go back and finish something that you started. The act of finishing something can bring peace. It makes you more organised and makes you feel good about yourself. This specific task will also help with your larger goals

used to weigh nearly 15 stone, but when I came here, I saw that many people were very fit and I wanted

to change. I used to be stressed all the time. I created too much drama out of very minor things. I now weigh 12 stone, and my body shape has completely changed after I decided to start ‘proper training’. Why do I refer to ‘proper’ training? Well, part of my previous stress was caused by many failed attempts to reach my fitness goals. I was gaining higher levels of endurance, but I wasn’t getting slimmer. I was stressed, because I still looked the same in the mirror. My self-esteem was on the floor. Now, when I started ‘proper’ training, I started seeing results, and real results. They were there, staring back at me. I started feeling better, and while I was training, I was also detoxing. I stopped worrying about the small things. One day, during the walk from the gym to my house, I was once again overthinking, but this time it was positive. I was problem solving, and it was during this time I had the idea to begin my online fitness blog.

Problem: Heartburn I used to suffer every day from heartburn. In order to avoid it, I used to take a tummy protector daily for more than four years.

But, when I started my new diet, eating more
