alway’s Cathal Manning is in fighting form as he gears up for the All Ireland boxing championships this weekend on Saturday, November 15th. He will be competing in the heavy weight division and has been training hard for the event. Cathal is best known in kickboxing circles, with many national and European titles under his belt. Now, he is set for a new challenge as he moves ever further into the world of boxing. “I am confident and nervous at the same time,” says Cathal. “I want to show the boxing community what I am made of. They may not know me before, but they will know me after Saturday!” Cathal trains twice per day, a mix of running and the gym, with the Corrib Boxing club. He first began kickboxing when he was 14-years-old and hasn’t looked back. It was the spark that ignited his passion for the sport. Cathal is known for his left hook and was “always better at punching than kicking!” “I was playing soccer with Our Ladies Boys Club on Sea Road and I looked into

this class at Columban hall,”he explains. “I just wanted to give it a go and found out it was the Black Dragon Kickboxing club. I had my first fight few weeks later and went on to win Junior Irish titles, three European titles and came third in the World Championships in 2011.” After his kickboxing success, the Rahoon man now “wants to make it at the boxing”. Today, Cathal lives in Gort with his partner, Lorraine Daly and their two young children. His family are fully supportive of his decision to pursue boxing. “My daughter, Katelin, is just 10 months old and she was the boost I needed to get back into training,” he says. “They are my inspiration and they push me to do better. Lorraine met me through kickboxing and she understands the sport. If my son Darren wanted to take it up, I would definitely support him. I teach him what I can.” Cathal extends his thanks to everyone in the Black Dragon Kickboxing Club, the Corrib Kickboxing Club and the Corrib Boxing Club for their support in the run up to his All Ireland Boxing challenge at the National Boxing Stadium in Dublin. he Galleon Restaurant in Salthill celebrates 50 years this November and is splashing out on a €50,000 giveaway. To mark the half century milestone of this landmark eatery - which was purchased on November 13th, 1964 - the Galleon are offering a food and drink bonanza to encourage diners to create new memories and reminisce on the old. From November 13th, the first 2,500 customers will receive a €20 Galleon note, which can be used on their next visit to the popular restaurant - when they spend €50 or more. This third generation family run business has become a Salthill institution. It was first purchased by Jimmy Lydon 50 years ago, passing to his son-in-law, John O’Sullivan in 1987 and is currently managed by his son, Roger. Famous not only for good food and a family friendly atmosphere, the Galleon restaurant sits atop a treasure chest of chocolate gold coins for children. Legend has it that a galleon ship deposited these coins in a cave beneath the restaurant after it crashed into
a cliff. Now the trove has been extended to adults as the €50,000 Galleon giveaway begins. “Our family is so grateful to all our team of today, and of all those from the years gone by, for all their loyalty, commitment and hard work over the years,” says Roger O’Sullivan. “We are also truly appreciative to all our local community and our visitors over the years who have being so loyal and committed to The Galleon over the years, without whom we would not have lasted the test of time. “The reason for our success is thanks to the collective part that each of them have played, and so we thank-you all for being a part in the journey towards reaching this momentous occasion. “We are now running our €50,000 give away as a gesture to say a big thank-you to you all and also to celebrate this milestone,” he concludes.

Natty Wailer for Jamaica Joe’s Natty Wailer, former member of Bob Marley and the Wailers, will be going back to his roots at Jamaica Joes in the city for their official opening weekend. Marathon Man He’s won the North Pole marathon and now Galway’s elite athlete, Gary Thornton from Newcastle, has beaten the heat by winning the 2014 Volcano Marathon in the driest place on earth. The event took place in Chile’s Atacama Desert and began at an altitude of over 14,000 feet. The primary school teacher at Claddagh National School was first to cross the line in the mammoth challenge, a route that took him alongside the most active volcanos in Northern Chile. The Volcano Marathon is among the highest and toughest marathons on the planet with athletes enduring strong headwinds, soaring temperatures and hilly, sandy terrain. Several
competitors required oxygen on finishing the event, however Gary showed his stamina by winning the 42.2km distance in four hours and ten minutes. This was almost two hours slower than his regular road marathon time, demonstrating the severeness of the race. Photo by Mike King

he video gaming scene has been booming here on the west coast over the last few years with a whole host of different communities appearing and interacting with each other. At this stage, it seems like no matter what kind of video games you enjoy playing, Galway has you catered for. The city has seen many great players excelling at their games of choice and making a name for themselves within their respective circuits. One of the fun things about player games this way is breaking out and challenging other communities around Ireland. That’s exactly what happened recently in Dublin with an all-Ireland style tournament called the Irish Open which invited fighting game fans from all over the country to come and compete against each other, and a team of Galway’s best fighters were also there to prove their skills. There were a lot of games on the bill, including favourites like Street Fighter

and Tekken, and even some lesser known games like Melty Blood and Project M. Galway’s Street Fighter team put up a fantastic fight, playing hard against players from Ireland’s four provinces, each with their own favourite characters and unique style of play. It was a rollercoaster of a day, filled with incredible highs and many close battles between some amazing players. Meeting new people and making friends from other counties while playing your favourite video games is always a fantastic experience. It sees Galway’s troops travelling far and wide to compete, and players visiting Galway to play in its regular tournaments too. It creates friendly competition and encourages all involved to constantly improve in order to represent their home towns and counties. The Irish Open was a huge success with approximately 100 people in attendance, and has left everyone waiting for the chance to meet up with their gaming friends at the next big event. in GALWAY

Cereal Killer Café Unless you have been living under a rock recently, you may have heard of these identical twins, Alan and Gary Keery, from Belfast. The pair have made quite a name for themselves as they are about to open London’s first cereal café. And they haven’t ruled out coming to Galway if the venture takes off. The concept is novel and will cater to all of us big kids - we love nostalgia and we love cereal! Thanks to the Keerys, we can now walk into a cereal world and be whisked back to our childhood. And they have plans to open a Cereal Killer Café in Dublin. You can choose from a variety of over 100 cereals and toppings and 12 types of milk. If that doesn’t tickle your fancy, there are also 18 flavours of pop-tart and toast. The brothers came up with the

idea while looking for a hangover cure lunch in London. They were craving a bowl of cereal and they couldn’t find what they were looking for. Cereal Killer Café will be opening this December in Shoreditch, London. The café will be at 139 Brick Lane, Shoreditch, will be spread over 2 floors. “We remember how exciting cereal was as kids and we are trying to recreate it in our cafe, so you’ll be surrounded by a lot of vintage cereal memorabilia to stir up the nostalgia in all of us,” explains co-founder Alan Keery. “We’re putting our own twist on a regular bowl of cereal by letting you customise it with different milks and toppings. ne Galway gal has taken her new locally made venture to London, as Louise De Vignoles has turned a handcrafted hobby into a viable business. Her hand poured, high quality candles and wax bars have been picked up by Blue Almond in London, and are also on sale in Mulberry Lane, Mullingar and La Maison Chic, Galway. Louise is already a recognisable and highly regarded local business woman in Galway since she established the New York Nail Salon in 2005 at the age of 23. “Meeting new people and making them confident and happy is always a good feeling,” she says. “I’m extremely lucky to have the most loyal clients a salon could wish for and I’ve made a lot of friends over the years. I also get to unleash my arty vibe on the nails of daring clients (including my mum) which is cool!”

Now she’s spreading her wings as she brings her candle company ‘De Vignoles Atelier’ to the market. She is following in the footsteps of a creative family, as the wheels for De Vignoles Atelier were set in motion, many moons ago. Inspired by the lavender fields near his grandparents home in Provence, France, Michael Vignole, set about making a homemade wax candle in a slow old fashioned double boiler on the cooker in his wife’s kitchen. Highly scented candles were rare in 1927 and the business did not take off. Now in 2014, Louise has taken up the mantle and is lighting the way, through her new website and skilled marketing. “My family are very creative,” says Louise, “they are a good support to me when I have ideas and want to test new fragrances on them! Initially I made the candles in my kitchen. But thankfully we now have a mini factory to work from. No more rose flavoured bread and tea bags!” in GALWAY

ountbellew drama group The Malthouse Players will bring Brendan O’Carroll’s ‘The Course’ to Galway audiences this November. After a chance meeting in 1996 with Brendan O’Carroll, the Malthouse Players were awarded the amateur premiere of Brendan’s popular play ‘The Course’. During that conversation Brendan promised he would attend and, true to his word, he came to Mountbellew in 1997 for the premiere. In his address to the audience Brendan said that he was “never as proud of his work!” The play ran to packed audiences in Tuam, Ballinasloe, The Taibhdhearc and in the Boyle Arts Festival. The Course is a riotous 3-Act comedy: fast-moving and with a motley collection of characters, the show is a treat, packed with the sharp oneliners and awkward situations which are the hallmark of O’Carroll’s quirky take on day-to-day life in modern Ireland.

poken word and hip hop recording artist, Scroobius Pip is set for a Galway return this November. Having quit his job in HMV in 2006, the rapper started Speech Development Records, which now holds artists warrenpeace, Jackamo Brown, polarbear, Sage Francis and B Dolan. Scroobius Pip has gained a large following, with over 30,000 YouTube subscribers and hits such as Introdiction have over 1.8 million views. His previous Galway performance was filmed by Rory Walsh of Spire productions
and he is known for his dark humour and hip hop flow. Now he will be joined by the Speech Development Records artists for a memorable night as part of their UK and Ireland tour. One of the main artists, B. Dolan, is a prolific rapper. He is known for songs such as ‘Film The Police and ‘Earthmovers’ and has toured the world. t’s that time of the year again. The time for men to keep their upper lip warm by growing a moustache in aid of cancer research. Movember has become an annual event and seems to be becoming increasingly popular, especially with students. It’s a chance to make a real difference while having a little fun on the side. The idea of Movember is quite simple. First, you register with their main website. This is a simple process and can be completed in a few short minutes. Then, you stop shaving above your top lip for the duration of the month. Finally, while grooming your fine new moustache, you spread the word throughout your friends, family, and social networking sites to inform them that you’re doing this to raise money and awareness for The Irish Cancer Society and its research into

testicular and prostate cancer. It’s all for an excellent and incredibly important cause, but it also proves to be quite a lot of fun. Many people like to make a month-long event of it by attempting to grow huge moustaches in a similar fashion to that of their heroes. The Tom Selleck look is a common sight during the beginning of the winter, as is the classic Freddy Mercury facial hair arrangement. More confident men might try to pull off the rock ‘n’ roll handlebar moustache. People can even form online “teams” of moustache growers to maximize the money raised. It may seem like a silly idea from the outside looking in, but its simplistic and fun nature makes it something that pretty much any man can do to fly the flag for men’s health. A little money can go a long way and a little effort can lead to an unusual and entertaining month that takes the cold bite out of November. in GALWAY

She is precise in her direction, gentle in correction and gives huge praise after every exercise. The other students were all women (though I’m told some men well. Irish ones!) Some had clearly danced before, while some were late bloomers like myself. The warmup begins at the barre, so you’re straight into real ballet movements; demi plié, side bend, rise, grand plié. There is a lot of repetition so it’s easy to catch on. We did a lot of barre work and then moved into the centre to practice port de bras, or ‘carriage of the arms’. It’s tricky enough to keep both arms moving simultaneously and gracefully. But oh yes, I felt like a real ballerina! Then the best bit: part of the

gceartú agus flaithiúil ár moladh. Mná a bhí sna daltaí eile, cé go ndeirtear liom go mbíonn corr-fhear ag damhsa sa scoil freisin (is ea, Éireannaigh!). Ba léir go ndearna roinnt acu bailé cheana, ach tosaitheoirí ar nós mé féin roinnt acu freisin. Tosaíonn an rang ag an mbarra, mar sin tosaítear le fíorghluaiseachtaí bailé láithreach; demi plié, crom ar an taobh, ardaigh, grand plié. Tá an-chuid athdhéanamh ann, mar sin is éasca foghlaim. Rinneamar cuid mhaith ag an mbarra agus ansin isteach linn chuig lár an stiúideo. Rinneamar port de bras, nó gluaiseacht na lámh. Bhí sé sách deacair an dá lámh a choinneáil ag imeacht an t-am ar fad agus cuma ghrástúil a chur orthu, ach mhothaigh mé i mo bhailairíne ceart! Ansin rinneamar cuid de chóiréagrafaíocht as Cinderella, a bheidh ar an stáitse sa Taibhdhearc an 29 agus an 30 Samhain. Píosa álainn a bhí ann le ceol iontach. Bhí orainn ‘aisteoireacht’
a dhéanamh freisin le Cinderella a thaispeáint ag athrú ó chailín aimsire go dtí damhsóir cumasach. An-spraoi. Chríochnaigh an rang go traidisiúnta leis an révérance; umhlú lena nglacann damhsóirí ar stáitse buíochas leis an lucht féachana. Bealach deas é le meas a léiriú dá chéile théis rang bailé. Buntáiste mór nach raibh súil agam leis ná an easpa péine i mo dhroim - a bhí ag cur isteach orm le fada - an mhaidin dar gcionn.
