B

oston Mayor, Marty Walsh, is on his way for a 10-day visit to Ireland from September 19th. It will be his first trip back to his ancestral home following his electoral victory last November. Top of the itinerary will be the laying of the foundation stone on the new Emigrants and Diaspora Centre, located in his late father’s parish of Carna,Connemara on September 23rd around 2pm. Excitement is building and preparations are being made for the turning of the stone. “It is the right place to have it on the site by the sea,” says one of the organisers, Mairtin O’Cathain. “We are excited and are currently preparing. We have no electricity out there at the moment and the site is a fright! But we will have a marquee, generator, music and light snacks and the event is open to the public. “When we first started the project, we never thought that one of our own would become Mayor of Boston. It is a historic occasion to have someone from the area to

4

officially lay the first foundation stone,” he says. Mayor Marty has often described Connemara as ‘home’ as his mother, Mary O’Malley is a native of Rosmuc and his late father, John, hailed from Callowfeenish, near Carna village. He keeps his connections close to his heart as he has a ‘Rosmuc’ sign in his mayoral office. His itinerary includes trips to Donegal, Derry, Belfast, and Dublin, returning for some private time with his family in Galway and Connemara and departing to Boston on September 29th. He may even appear on the Brendan O’Connor show on RTE if he can be persuaded to do so. Marty is no stranger to the area as he has been in Connemara “at least a dozen times”. Speaking about his Connemara roots to the Boston Globe, Mayor Walsh said “ Every summer, I’d go over as a kid to my grandparents’ house in Rosmuc, where my mother is from. I loved it there: planting cabbage or sowing potatoes in the fields, feeding the chickens or fishing on the pier.” He is the first Irish American to hold the political post in two decades. in GALWAY

project goes some way towards helping a greater cause and hope it might inspire others too. The centre will be built at the site of the old parish hall in Carna village, as a place to link the diaspora at home and abroad, and provide a living picture of the history of a rural, Irish speaking west of Ireland community. It will be built on the footprint of the old hall, which has fallen into disrepair following a serious fire five years ago, and will have an information library; emigrants remembrance garden; a café overlooking the Atlantic; events hall; fitness room and visitor information.

Candy: You seem to be tangled up in a very hairy situation haha! You’ve just got to take this one strand at a time. We can’t brush this problem to the side. Hay does your hair watch Sherlock Combs? I’ve heard of bad hair days but this takes the biscuit. My mamma always said if your hair ain’t right cover it in honey but I don’t think that’ll fix this. You

need to capture your hair and go to a high priestess in Tibet and let her perform a ritual over your hair. You also need to join a pack of wild wolves in Alaska for a week and then return to the priestess where you and your hair will be spanked for another week. That should get things under control.

Cara: I think you are delusional and need to seek medical advice. Your hair couldn’t possibly be doing this. It is also possibly that you are blaming your hair for actions you are taking.

If you genuinely feel frightened and still think this is happening see your Doctor immediately.

alway wouldn’t be Galway without the busking talent of James Gallagher. His voice continually draws the crowds and it is a pleasure to stand and listen to him as he breathes new life into traditional folk songs. Having played extensively with the Atlantic Pirates, he is set to launch his new solo album, aptly entitled ‘Street Ballads’, this Friday, September 5th, upstairs in the Ruby Room at the King’s Head at 8:30pm. James has been singing “as far back as I can remember” and the Donegal man is firmly rooted in music and song. “Quite a few in my family can sing,” he says, “and whenever I travel home we might have an oul sing song”. Like many, James came to Galway for a weekend and stayed for what could be a lifetime. Without him and his guitar, the city just wouldn’t be the same. He also plays the banjo and the autoharp “like Billy Connolly” (when I ask him to explain what it is). James admits he is the anti X-factor

16

type, as it is the mass production of music “that I don’t like” which inspires him to continue on his folk journey. There are 13 songs on Street Ballads, including ‘The Flower of Sweet Strabane’ and ‘Bunclody’, inspired also by the people he meets. “A lot of the songs on the album are requests I receive from people I have met on the streets busking, or at gigs, and they have asked me to sing them,” he says. “I have met so many great people through these songs, so I decided to record them on an album in the Forge Studios. A lot of people are asking about it and it is very encouraging.” When he isn’t singing, recording or performing, James can be found with a Terry Pratchett book in hand. If stranded on a desert island, he would bring a boat, a mobile phone and a box of cigars for company. As it is his first solo album launch, James is both “nervous and happy” about the event at the King’s Head. Admission is free and CDs will be on sale for €10. Going Barmy for Marnie

G

eordie Shore reality starlet and former Miss Newcastle finalist, Marnie Simpson, stole the show as she made a guest appearance at the Barcode Teen Events discos recently. The MTV stunner was flocked by the crowds at East nightclub in Ballinasloe and Ringos in Loughrea - and, in a twist for fans of the series, was completely sober. She followed the strict no alcohol

policy and was warm and welcoming to all, greeting the young fun lovers as they arrived. Marnie, who is regularly on our screens in a tug-o-war love situation, had many admirers at the evening events and was professional and courteous throughout. She was the latest addition to the crazy Geordie Shore house, describing herself as “adventurous, determined, kind, happy and always someone who gives 100%”. She stayed true to her philosophy while partying in Galway.

ld! o G r o f Going Dr Eoghan Clifford, an NUIG academic, has stormed to his second world title, winning the men’s C3 road race at the paracycling road world championships in Greenville, South Carolina, USA. The lecturer in civil engineering pushed ahead with three laps to go in the 10.2km course and won by almost two minutes. “I can’t believe it,” he said. “I had planned to not show in the first few laps, but it was very explosive, and I was struggling pretty bad, so hung in towards the back. I felt that as they tired and lost the explosiveness, I

stayed the same. With three laps to go, I put my head down to see what would happen. I am the kind of rider that if I can get a gap I can hold it, and they would have to commit to a chase to catch me, I didn’t want it to come to a sprint. When I got up to two minutes ahead, I knew I had it.” Dr Clifford added a special note of thanks to his fellow teammates: “I would like to thank the rest of the Irish team and management here. They made it really easy for me; the other squad members have so much experience, and were really helpful.”

“I’ll miss something; I’ll miss something!” On a glorious Saturday afternoon in Galway, I decided to take our columnist Dara Kelly’s advice regarding what to do to make the most of our final summer days. One was to sit in a city centre cafe and watch the world go by. Little did I know how challenging this would be. Shop Street was ablaze with colour and activity, and as a newbie country lass (is Moycullen considered country?) I was so excited to be back on my territory as it thrummed with life. However, I simply couldn’t sit still. Who knew this would be a challenge! And so I strolled down the cobblestones, determined to slow it down and observe what was happening in our city of the tribes. A crowd had gathered, and typically, I am frustrated by Galway’s people traffic. I always try to navigate my way around them as fast as possible to get to my destination. This time I stopped. A melodic male voice sailed over the summer’s day and, to my surprise, it was the chart topping Keywest plying their trade. The five piece from Dublin are busking

superstars and have opened for the likes of Blondie at the Galway Arts Festival, securing a no 1 album, The Message, by going down the independent route and they have a new one on the way. I didn’t need an electric picnic ticket as I savoured the tones of Andrew Kavanagh, James Lock, Andrew Glover, Sam Marder and Harry Sullivan in advance of their festival gig. As their set came to a close, I meandered onwards to the next artist to catch my eye. A group of men were strangely dressed in black - some sort of gangster human statues with a fake dalmation. Odd. But that’s Galway. The rousing beats of a sole African drummer outside Easons drew the ledge brigade, a typical resting point for many as they take a breather from their tasks and simply enjoy the music. Further on, the strains of trad and folk came from a group of buskers on Quay street. It was three concerts and a crazy performance art installation in one day. Onwards to the market, where I met up with friends - and ate sushi on the grounds of St Nicholas Collegiate Church - as you do, before the Galway in GALWAY

Community Pride Parade roared into life with colourful costumes to match the equally colourful flags. After a trip into a few shops, I was finally ready to sit down. Fortunately, I found a spot outside McCambridges and enjoyed a well-deserved chai latte. I had

achieved my goal, set out by Dara, and watched the world go by, if only for a little while. I spied plenty of tourists on the move and was thoroughly entertained by my day. Sitting in the city was not as easy as it first seemed, and yet, it was worth it.

ad as it may be, it’s time to say goodbye to your summer wardrobe. There are a lot of positives when it comes to A/W fashion and we’ve brought you some helpful tips to keep in mind when it comes to transitioning your wardrobe for this season.

A few good wardrobe staples can work for every season once styled correctly. Another tip is to ‘layer’ everything, layering really is the buzzword in the fashion industry when it comes to A/W fashion. Longer vest tops worn under knitwear and layered with a long coat or leather jacket are one way to make a great fashion statement. Finally embrace the new season, figure out the trends that work with your style and make them your own. Photo by Shane O’Connor Model: Stephanie Casserly

First of all select a few key pieces from your summer wardrobe which you think can work for A/W. For instance I wouldn’t be packing away the shorts and skirts just yet, these items can look great when layered with tights, chunky socks and ankle boots. Then actually consider how you will wear these items differently in the next season, it’s often all about the accessories you add to a look. The kimono trend was very popular this season and I can see this working well for an A/W

Pretty In Pink - The Art of Ana’s Nails

A

na Vaz has had an interesting life! She worked as a fully qualified beautician in India for 20 years before moving to Ireland. And I was fortunate to find myself at Ana’s Express threading and nail bar, nestled cosily by the old city walls in the Eyre Square shopping centre. It is a surprisingly peaceful and private location in a busy place. I chose a shellac manicure and, as Claire worked on my nails, Ana sat down next to me. Her love for beauty never left her, and when she came here, she began her own threading work in other salons. As her popularity grew, she looked into opening her own business, and the express bar was born. Her reputation has been very much word of mouth and her busy schedule is testament to this. She clearly has a passion for her work and will often stay late to see clients, describing herself as a perfectionist, who will not let a client leave until they are completely satisfied. And she has recently trained in California with the Young Nails brand.

26

The price range is very reasonable and actually very good value, considering the effort and care that was put in by Claire during my treatment. As part of the shellac, one nail on each hand can be decorated free of charge with a simple design. A cost applies for a full set of design nails. The bar is open from 10 am Tuesday through Saturday and late on Thursday and Friday. Getting hold of a loyalty card will get you 20 per cent off the fifth treatment and 10 euros off in the month of your birthday! Both Ana and Claire did tell me that they do get very busy so it is definitely better to ring them and to ensure you get an appointment. If you want one, hurry up though, as they are already being praised in celebrity circles. Zoe Dechanel from TV’s ‘New Girl’ shared a photo of nautical design work done by Claire on her personal twitter page. Hollywood awaits!! ThreadingbyAnacanbefoundonTwitterandFacebook.

orcha Browne is determined to highlight the best Galway has to offer in the fashion industry and, as such, has organised a follow-up to last February’s Designer and Blogger Showcase with a September edition. The event takes place on Sunday 7th September in Monroe’s Live at 6pm and she shared with us her inspiration for organising this event in Galway: “I decided to work with all these creative people around Galway to put together a fashion show. This included designers and bloggers of course, along with what always makes a team - photographers, make-up artist, hair stylist and models,” she explains.

I had the pleasure of speaking at the February edition but unfortunately won’t be able to join the bloggers this time as I’m heading to London for a different bloggers event (The Bloggers Festival which you can read about in the next edition of the CRAIC in Galway). The fashion show will be followed by a best dressed competition and exciting performances from Les Hot Culottes and ShirMa Dness both of the Dirty Circus. “I would like to gain more recognition for everyone involved, make the show bigger and better each year and get a good name for Galway going in the fashion industry.” Sorcha explains of her plans for the future of the Showcase. There is no cover charge for the event however donations on the night will go towards the Manuela Riedo Foundation. Photo by Patrick Lennon
