t’s time to get back to our roots as Heritage Week takes place from August 23rd – 31st, 2014. Galway is well represented, with a myriad of walks, talks, demonstrations and exhibitions taking place across the city and county. Dúchas Na Gaillimhe – Galway Civic Trust have lots of events planned, and the theme this year is ‘family – generations exploring our heritage together’. Local events include a family tour of Renmore Military Barracks Museum, beach exploration or a visit the Zoology or Geology Museum, at NUIG. You can learn about traditional

crafts at the Hall of the Red Earl and enjoy the sound of the harp echoing through the heart of medieval Galway. Different guided walks will shed a new light on the city and its waterways, while a visit to the newly opened Fishery Watchtower Museum is a must. Kenny’s Bookshop and Gallery are also hosting special exhibitions, with antiquarian maps and prints on display, while the James Hardiman Library at NUIG will house the Abbey Theatre digital archive exhibition. We have lots of events covered in our craicing diary, but for more check out www.heritageweek.ie.

Sweet Attrition and Franklin Tree

T

wo of Galway’s freshest and most exciting new bands will take to the mainstage in Monroes Live on Saturday, 5th September to raise much needed funds for the Irish Cancer Society.

Sweet Attrition and Franklin Tree will be kicking off what promises to be a great night from 9pm. Both bands have been gaining a steady following around Galway and are sure to have you dancing the night away with their complementary mix of music. Sweet Attrition are an Athenry based band who play a mixed blend of new and old songs; some even with a unique twist! After taking Athenry by storm they are moving on to Galway to do the same starting 5th September in Monroes Live. Sweet Attrition consist of band-members Sinead Murphy-vocals and guitar, Paul Mahony-vocals and guitar, Dessie

6

Pratt-vocals and bass, John Lawrence-guitar and Adam Feeneydrums. The Craic in Galway had a craicing preview of their music in the Hop Inn, Athenry recently and we are looking forward to hearing them play again soon! Joining them on the night will be Galway based band Franklin Tree. These guys are a cool, original band whose self-described style is “raw, alternative rock”. Franklin Tree, who recently played the Galway Fringe Festival are Lisanne Jacob-lead vocals, Sean Hehir-guitar, David McDonagh-rhythm guitar, Dave Cig-bass and Tobi Kaye on drums. There will also be spot prizes on the night along with plenty of dancing and craic. Both bands are really looking forward to supporting this worthy cause. Sara O’Halloran who is organising the event tells us she hopes to raise more awareness about the Irish Cancer Society as so many people are impacted by this. in GALWAY

A Bunny Hop to LA

A

thenry stunner, Shahira Barry, has been celebrating at the Playboy Mansion as she joined Hugh Hefner and the bunnies for his Midsummer Night’s Dream Party.

Shahira entered the limelight after spending time at the famous mansion last summer and has now acquired her US visa to follow her LA dream’s of modelling, music and acting. She has already taken part in Avicii’s latest music video, and was previously featured in videos by Nicki Minaj, Chris Brown and

8

Enrique Iglesias. She received an open invite to the mansion from Hef himself following her first visit and is taking full advantage of the opportunity. Shahira is currently learning how to drive along the vast freeways in the US and is loving the lifestyle. While she has a teaching degree, she is a “showbiz gal at heart” and is pursuing her “ultimate dream”. We were lucky to have Shahira as our craicing cover girl last year, pictured right with Sunny Juddy and Sian Murphy, and wish her the best with her future career.

C

atriona O’Brien from Bohermore has already parachuted out of a plane and parasailed in the stunning surrounds of Portugal. Yet it was more than just an adventure for the outgoing woman, who would happily curl up to Russell Crowe, and loves girlie novels by Sophie Kinsella. For Catriona, it was part of a bucket list she created when she was first diagnosed with debilitating motor neuron disease at just 38. And now her supportive friends, who know her as ‘Tee’ want to help her finish the list, before the illness robs her of her mobility.

her from completing her exciting ‘to do’ list.

Together they have organised a black tie fundraising ball in the Radisson hotel on Saturday, September 6th, so that she can enjoy a helicopter spin, visit a butterfly zoo, an elephant ride in Africa, a trip to Cadbury World and more. Catriona is currently in a wheelchair, but that won’t stop

MND is a rare, incurable, muscle wasting illness affecting the ability to walk, talk, and even breathe. Catriona was only 38 when she was diagnosed at the end of March and describes it was the “worst day of my life”. She had experienced a “heavy leg” initially and was falling in public.

10

“My bucket list is fun filled and adventurous!” she says excitedly, “I have a trip to Cadbury World slotted in there as I am a big fan of chocolate! I decided to create one a few weeks after I was diagnosed with MND. “Knowing my illness and its ability to take away my independence, I feel the need to squeeze everything into my life while I can. I can barely walk, but that won’t stop me ticking off my bucket list! I already have two ticks made. The parachute jump was amazing. I never felt such a fear and rush like it in my life! I wasn’t right for a week afterwards!”

• 11am: Explore the beach with Yvonne Leahy from the lifeguard hut, Grattan Beach, Salthill.

She became “clumsy” and knew something was amiss, but never dreamed she would have a fatal disease. Once told the life changing news, she was unable to drive home she was“crying so much”. Yet through the clouds have come a determination to live life to the full. My life has completely changed. There’s lots that I can’t do anymore, but that’s not going to stop me from doing some of the things I still want to do, like travelling and riding elephants! I am trying to remain as strong and positive as possible. I do have my bad days, but, there is no point in lying down and crying about this. I need to get up every day and live my life as best I can,” she explains. The fundraising ball includes a beautifully prepared three course meal, live music and entertainment provided by Shadow Play and Rofi James, After Party with DJ Joe Love on the decks, with lots of spot prizes up for grabs. You can help Catriona’s friends and family to raise the money

needed to make her dreams a reality, and to raise further awareness about motor neuron disease.

A

t just 24, Nathan Carter is spinning like a wagon wheel as he brings the cool back to country music. We caught up with the fine looking chap in advance of his sell out performance at the Black Box theatre on Thursday, August 28th. Such is the demand for a slice of the young Mr Carter, a second date has been added on Friday, August 29th, and tickets are flying out the door. Just 50 were left when we spoke to him while he was on the road to Tralee, where he will have serenaded the winning Rose live on air. The talented musician picked up the accordion at the age of 4 and won an All-Ireland for traditional singing when he was just 10-years-old. Since

12

the release of his version of ‘Wagon Wheel’ in 2012, he has had a stellar rise to fame, introducing a new generation to country. How do you feel about your success? I love gigging, I have played in pubs and clubs since I was 16 and I just love music. Success is whatever you think of it yourself. At shows, I still can’t believe people are screaming at me! I am just Nathan. You are often described as a ‘heartthrob’; what do you think of that? I don’t see myself as that at all. I normally just go bright red! I get embarrassed by it. Who is the most inspiring person in your life?

>>> My Nan, Annie McCoy. She has pushed me since I was a kid to get into music. She drove me everywhere to the gigs initially and I couldn’t have done it without her. If you were to take someone on a date, where would you go? I would take them to the cinema. I just saw the new Inbetweeners movie, but I was disappointed, it wasn’t as good as the last one. I like to go to the cinema on a night off. Favourite Food: Chinese. If you were stranded on a desert island, what three things would you bring? The auto trader magazines because I am mad into cars, my iPod, and my accordion. (This brings on a lot of laughter from his managers).

A white Audi A7 and it’s great! Is the glass half empty or half full? It’s half empty normally; then I have to check myself and get a grip. I have to remind myself to be happy. How do you feel right now? Happy! (A chorus of ‘Cos I’m Happy’ by Pharrell Williams echoes down the phone and I feel privileged to be serenaded myself ). I am really looking forward to gigging in Galway. It is my first time at the Black Box, I was at the Town Hall Theatre before, and it was such a surprise that it has sold out. There are only a few tickets left for the second concert. I am also really excited to sing at the Rose of Tralee. Ah, he was lovely and fair.

Interesting; what to you drive?

The festival kicks off on Friday, Sept 5th at 6pm in the Harbour Hotel with a talk by Menlough writer and broadcaster, Mary J Murphy, on the remarkable life of Galway woman Eva O’Flaherty. Eva referred to Wilde as her ‘cousin Oscar’ and moved in circles in London, Paris, Dublin and Achill from the 1900s onwards through her involvement in millinery, literary and intellectual pursuits. Other highlights include a talk on Wilde Today at An Taibhdhearc and a look at how Wilde dressed. A letter Wilde wrote titled The Philosophy of Dress was rediscovered in 2012 and gives a fascinating insight into his dress sense - an unappreciated aspect of his life to date. There will also be a show about one of the most important women in Wilde’s life –

his mother – with acclaimed UK actress, Patricia Leventon. The festival concludes on Sunday, Sept 7th, with the debut of new Irish writing. Kicking Oscar’s Corpse by Galway writer Brendan Murphy at the Harbour Hotel at 1pm. Based on actual court transcripts, ‘Kicking Oscar’s Corpse’ is a docu-play based on the famous libel trial of Maud Allan in 1918. It’s a story of judges and prejudice, MP’s and dancing girls, sex, scandal and conspiracy. Festival founder and director, Sandra Coffey said: “The festival has a lot to offer this year. It will look at what we think of Wilde today, how he used dress to his advantage and the huge influence his mother had on him. Yet again, we explore his west of Ireland links through Eva O’Flaherty and debut new Irish writing inspired by Wilde. Tickets are again reasonably priced and we hope that people will come and enjoy the weekend.” For further information and how to get tickets, go to the festival website www.oscarwildefestival. com in GALWAY

There is a great buzz and atmosphere around the city; excitement and happiness. On Saturday (August 23rd), there is the annual Pride Parade. It starts at 2pm in Eyre Square, and makes its way through town. For me, the Pride Parade is what it is all about. It is very

powerful and liberating to march as yourself freely and proudly. I encourage everyone to attend the parade on Saturday. It will be an amazing experience and day. What is your favourite thing about Galway Pride? Everyone (gay or straight, LGBTQ+ or not) can come together and celebrate diversity. Pride is a time of celebration for us all. I’m looking forward to the referendum on marriage equality, and I want to see the people of Ireland support their LGBT family, friends, co-workers, etc. and vote in favour of it. Pride, for me, really is about pride. It is about being proud of who you are. What inspires you? Those that live in fear of being bullied or being persecuted inspire me to do what I do and to continue doing what I do. I hope that my visibility and in GALWAY

public presence as an openly gay young person and an androgynous model helps open minds and change opinions. We are all different. ‘Normal’ doesn’t exist. What advice would you give for anyone thinking of pursuing androgynous modelling? Go for it, but it is hard because you are doing something different and you have to be brave, confident and selfassured. Modelling agencies in Ireland aren’t ready (or brave enough) to take on androgynous models so you will probably have to do it yourself for a while, as a freelance, independent model. Which project has been your favourite to date? A shoot I did with photographer Hazel Coonagh and model Bluebird for Chunk.ie, a popular site for alternative models in Ireland. The makeup was gothic

and I had a lot of fun working with Bluebird. My favourite video project would be ‘’Seduction’, which is a video I made with Marie Charlier. What quote do you live your life by? ‘’What is normal for the spider,

is chaos for the fly.’’ What is considered ‘normal’ changes with different perspectives. We all understand ‘normal’ differently. It is relative, subjective, and personally defined. How would you describe your fashion style in 3 words? Male. Female. Androgynous. What’s next for Ivan Fahy? I am going to continue being me and doing what I do. I will continue modelling androgynously and engaging in LGBTQ+ and gender activism. Please visit my Facebook modelling page and join it by clicking ‘Like’ to see all that I do and will do. The support means a lot to me. Find Ivan Fahy on facebook.com/ IvanFahyOfficial and on Twitter/ Instagram (@IvanFahy).

reland’s biggest tattoo show returns to the Radisson Blu on September 13th and 14th, as the Galway Tattoo Show brings the world’s best tattoo artists to our shores. The event will feature 90 of biggest names in Irish and international tattooing - including celebrity tattoo artists Phil Kyle from the reality TV series London Ink - and Chris Jones, star of what will be the USA’s biggest ever Tattoo Show - Epic Ink, screened to over 200 million homes worldwide on the popular A&E Channel. Galway itself has a very high standard of tattoo artist and will be represented by 5 of its best studios. As last year, the show will welcome all walks of life and will feature a ‘family fun and kids area’ along with a tattoo art gallery, music, entertainment, fun photo booth, market stalls, a unique tattoo cinema showing exclusive films, body and face painting, awards, competitions, art classes and workshops and much more. Tattooing has become huge after the success of TV shows like Miami Ink, L.A Ink, London Ink and with many celebrities

adorning themselves with body art, tattooing is getting bigger by the day. After years of prejudice, tattooing is finally being recognised as the art form it is and is now the 5th largest growing retail business in the world with the bigger tattoo shows in Europe now attracting upward of 8,000 – 15,000 people. The show is being organised by experienced Irish events manager Martin McIver, who says: “After the runaway success of last years show, we’re back, bigger and better. Galway is Ireland’s home of the arts, so it seems fitting for a world class tattoo art show; this will be a brilliant and fun weekend for all the family to enjoy, ask anyone who came last year? Tattoo shows are some of the most creative, friendliest and entertaining days out you can have, so it doesn’t matter whether you are old, young, tattooed or non-tattooed, we guarantee a brilliant weekend and an experience you will never forget.” Galway Tattoo Show – http://www.facebook.com/ galwaytattooshow Contact for further information email: galwaytattooshow@gmail. com

alway busker, singer and songwriter, Jody Mullarkey, has made the social media headlines as his energetic performances were spotted by website evoke.ie. Described as “Ireland’s latest singing sensation”, they say he “sings and dances like noone is watching”. With his trademark grey suit, he cuts a dash on the streets of the city as he belts out top hits to a backing track, complete with showstopping moves. “The mystery singer has been receiving rave reviews by word of mouth across Galway city for his unique interpretations of popular songs,” they say, as

he channels his inner Bruce Springsteen, complete with air guitar. The glowing review continues “the singer delivers a brilliant performance, dancing his way across the street, before members of the public get caught up in his awesome energy.” He recently launched his album ‘Heart Strings’ upstairs in The Crane bar, working closely with Pete Duffy from The Dreams Loft over the past year. 10% of the album proceeds will go to Aspergers Action Galway. If you haven’t spotted him out and about, you can see our video of Jody uploaded onto our facebook page/ thecraicingalway.
