Welcome to the 25th edition of the Craic in Galway magazine. Once again, I can say these words, we are having a party and you are all invited! We are celebrating our first birthday with a craicing night out at Monroe’s Live on Friday, June 27th from 8pm. We are delighted to have reached this milestone with our little but large magazine and hope to get bigger and better all the time. Thank you to our advertisers for your continuing support, we couldn’t do it without you, as we continue to promote Galway and our local businesses in a positive light. Hello to everyone on Citylink and if you are in the city over that weekend, come and join us! Not only will we have the best of live music and entertainment, with our fantastic city buskers joining in on the action, but we will also have a fashion show and free grub to keep you fed and entertained on the night. And of course we will be there, taking pictures, floating about and trying to look interesting and glamorous. Our goal from our first edition has been to bring you the best of what’s happening in this wonderful city of the tribes. We are so enshrined now on the social scene, that our craicing stylist Sunny Juddy, is the new legs of the Galway International Arts Festival 2014. We are very proud altogether. For more, read on, and make sure to take your happy feet to our birthday party in Monroe’s Live. See you there!

Happy Reading, Sure it’s all a bit of craic!

T

he Craic in Galway magazine features in the latest music video for iRock’s winners, Rofi James. The talented Kamil Krolak, maker of Galway Is Also Happy and 50 People 1 Question, produced and directed the video shoot, which was organised by divmedia.ie. The shoot took place along the city streets and in Monroe’s Live for their track ‘Don’t Know You’ and will be released online on Monday, June 16th. It is the second music video by the electric Galway pop, rock and acoustic band, following the release of ‘Heuston’ last month from their debut EP. Rofi James features a new line up with Ronan Flaherty on guitar and vocals, Jamie Murray on drums and percussion, Levi O’Brien on lead guitar and Eoin Ó Conghaile on bass. The group are on the up, after taking first place at the ultimate battle of the bands showdown, iRocks - organised by iRadio - at Monroe’s Live last year. The video stars Adam Alsybury and Anna Carroll as the two main

4

characters, and features a number of their friends - including Shane Kelly, Maciej Andrzejewski, and Aoife Ní Fhlaithearta. “They plan to meet up at a Rofi James gig after randomly meeting and exchanging numbers,” explains band member Jamie Murray, “then try to convince their friends to come along to the show, so they can meet up and take things from there. It’s a feel good pop song about meeting new people and the mixed emotions involved in the process” The band are grateful for all the support received since their iRocks win, and enjoyed the experience of working with Kamil and his team, who they say “were brilliant”. “Throughout the process of planning and shooting the video over a number of days, they were very generous with their time and energy, we had a great time shooting the video and had a great laugh when shooting finished,”concludes Jamie. Don’t Know You will be available along with the rest of their EP on Spotify and iTunes and was recorded in the Grouse Lodge Recording Studio by John Henry.

A Story To Tell

Linda Welby in Station House Clifden PhotosBy Darius IVAN

Galway audiences had an opportunity to hear and meet Linda Welby, one of Ireland’s finest singer songwriters, at one of her rare local appearances in the Station House Hotel Theatre in Clifden on Saturday, June 7th. The Loughrea native, who now lives in

Roscahill, first rose to prominence in 2008 with the release of her first single, the Galway Fiddler. It went on to become an international hit and was followed by two full albums. Linda has performed across the US, Australia, the UK and Ireland, and her two hour

show included a number her own songs, mixed with some country and rock n’roll favourites. She leans strongly towards traditional music, but covers a wide range, to the delight of the gathered crowd. The show will be televised by Irish TV. (av)

s p e c i a l fundraising event takes place on Saturday, June 14th at 3pm. Run for Ollie is an annual 5k run through Milltown, Co Galway, and is the only event held every year to help fundraise for Ollie Burke (38), who requires ongoing care. Ollie’s life changed forever in 2007 when the electrician fell from a ladder and suffered severe head injuries. Prior to this, he was active and intelligent, playing Gaelic for his local club and working across Tuam, Milltown and Galway. The fifth of six children to Walter and Mary Burke, he

attended primary school in Garrafrauns and secondary in Dunmore Community School. Following his accident, he sustained an acquired brain injury and, following a series of life threatening operations, he is now severely incapacitated. He lives at home with his mother and brother and requires 24hour care. Ollie enjoys living at home and is able to do so thanks to the assistance of Friends of Ollie. Friends of Ollie provide approximately 200 hours of care per month, the rest of the care is provided by the HSE and the Burke family. All participants in the run will receive a t-shirt, medal and refreshments. For more check out www.friendsofollie.com.

there was “plenty of excitement” as the U2 frontman dined at the fantastic venue, before taking a walk down on the pier after his lunch. Bono is pictured with head chef Keith Carden.

Ryan to Return Home

Good news for the family of Ryan Croker, as the young 25-year-old is coming home to Moycullen from the Perth hospital, where he has been recovering from a serious accident for the last five months. Ryan sustained a spinal injury in Australia and his return follows extensive fundraising to have him transferred back to Ireland. the GAA and the local Moycullen community. “After 5 long months in Australia, with extreme highs and lows, they’re coming home,” said Ryan’s representatives through their social media page. “We are extremely grateful for all of the support we received in Perth from Ryan’s many friends, and Ryan is looking forward to be coming home to be with his family and friends. Straight talking from the trailor trash mouth of Southern Belle, Candy, and the more refined Cara from Connemara.

Dear Candy:

By Cara LYONS

www.lovefromcara.com

I trusted my best friend with a secret and she promised she wouldn’t tell but now I keep hearing rumours ever y where ab out me. She must have told someone. How could she? I’ m not sure what to say to her or if I ever want to see her again. Should I deny the rumour? I feel ashamed and scared people will not want to know me.

Candy: Oh my Gawd! What’s your secret? You need to write back and tell me what it was. It must have been really messed up if you’re afraid people won’t want to know you. I love hearing people’s weird secrets and I’ve heard a lot of rumours lately. Are you that girl I heard about that has an extra boob? Or the one who likes to dress up like a koala when she’s alone and

sleep in a tree? Your secret must have been juicier than a streak on a grill. You could just capture everyone you think knows and keep them locked up in a barn in a far away land. Or you could own that rumour like a Boss and say ‘hell yeah that was me!’ What you gonna do about it? But first write back and tell me what it was.

Cara: Everyone has done things we don’t feel that good about. If you tell people secrets or lies the truth usually comes out in the end. Maybe your friend felt like the information you gave her was too much for her to keep to herself? Maybe she didn’t mean to say

14

anything or maybe the rumours came from elsewhere. If you value the friendship you will ask her what happened and if she values it she will tell you truthfully. Accept that what’s done is done and move on knowing that everyone makes mistakes. in GALWAY

or the first time in a decade Galway will be represented at the International Rose of Tralee festival and it’s all down to one amazing lady – Nicola Corcoran, the 2014 Galway Rose.

You must be thrilled to be the first Galway Rose in 10 years to make it through to the Rose of Tralee final. How does this feel? I am on cloud nine! Becoming Galway Rose was an absolute dream come true for me. To represent the county and city that I love on an international stage is just incredible. What inspired your entry to the Rose of Galway contest? I have always wanted to enter, but this year was the first year I really felt ready. I am a special class teacher for children with autism, so when I saw that you could represent a charity, I jumped at the opportunity to be the first rose for Galway Autism Partnership. It’s an amazing organisation run by some really super people. I am also a youth group leader in Renmore where I live. I want to be a positive role model to the young people in my group and this was a

18

great opportunity to do just that. How will the next few months see you prepare for the Rose of Tralee? I will be very busy going around the county and country supporting and promoting different charity events that I am interested in such as Galway Autism Partnership, Galway Simon Community and Global Schoolroom - an organisation I went to India with last year. I will also be very busy looking for outfits for the Rose Tour and the Rose of Tralee International Festival! Very exciting times ahead :) Surprise us with an interesting fact about yourself. I love hill walking and have completed 300 km of the Camino Del Norte in Northern Spain. I hope to complete all 800km in a couple of years. My boyfriend and I have also completed Carrauntoohill, Ireland’s highest peak. in GALWAY

• 3pm: Scottish accordion and musette champion, John Burns and friends will play an afternoon gig at The King’s Head as part of the Galway Sessions.

Are you looking forward to meeting your escort for the festival? I am, it will be interesting to see who I am paired with. He will have a tough job to keep up with my boyfriend Padraig who was my super escort in Galway! How difficult was it to come up with a talent to perform at the contest? Not too difficult. I have travelled to Kenya on a volunteering trip and decided to bring a bit of African culture to the stage by teaching the audience an African song. It was original to say the least but it went down a treat in Galway and Portlaoise! The Rose of Tralee is not a talent show, so there was never any pressure on me to perform. As it happens, since 2007, only one of the ladies selected to be the Rose of Tralee has actually performed a ‘party-piece’ in the Dome. What was it like meeting Daithi O’Se and taking to the stage in Portlaoise for the Regional Festival? I was so excited to meet Daithi. I have

always found him to be so funny on TV. He is such a lovely man, a real gentleman. He does a great job at making us feel relaxed on the stage; he makes you feel like it’s just a chat! It was such a unique experience to stand up in front of all your friends and family and speak with pride about the things that you are passionate about. What will you be using your Galway Rose title to promote? One thing I really want to promote is the use of ‘people first language’. What I mean by this, is using phrases that respect each person , for example ‘the child with autism’ instead of ‘the autistic child’. It is really a habit to get into and this way everyone is given the dignity they deserve. A persons special needs should not define them. In terms of charities - Galway Autism Partnership and Global Schoolroom. Global Schoolroom are a fabulous charity set up a few years ago in order to provide a three year course

to teachers in North East India. Last summer, I spent a month teaching teachers about school leadership and special education. It was one of the best experiences of my life and I received great preparation from Global Schoolroom. I would advise any teachers interested in volunteering abroad in looking into this organisation. What is the CRAIC in Galway? The Craic is 90 in Galway! I was walking down Shop Street last week and I saw a giant lobster (inflated) walking ahead of me! And nobody batted an eyelid! So typical of our vibrant city that is buzzing with festivities and fun all year round. Nicola will take to the stage on either the 18th or 19th of August as part of the International Rose of Tralee festival, so let’s support our Galway Rose. We hope that she will become the 4th Galway Rose to win the title of ‘Rose of Tralee’, best of luck Nicola!

Atlantic is Making Waves

A

new documentary by the director of the award winning ‘The Pipe’, Richie O’Donnell, entitled ‘Atlantic’ - has smashed it’s fundraising target by over €7,000. The team have rallied support through the fundit website raising a whopping €32,000 through online donations. The Galway based documentary will explore the management of oil and gas assets in Ireland, through the fortunes of three

fishing communities united and divided by the Atlantic ocean It follows them as they struggle to maintain their way of life despite mounting challenges within their own industry and environment and an increase of oil exploration activities in their fishing grounds. Since September last year, the project has grown, with on location shooting in Ireland, Newfoundland and Norway. They initially hoped to raise €25,000 and have exceeded their goal, with the help of 484 contributors. Congratulations to all.

Pedal Pushers Jury’s Inn employee, Martin Diskin, is Antwerp bound as he will take part in the Special Olympic summer european games as part of the Irish soccer team. Each time the team plays, local radio station Galway Bay FM will promote the bar it is twinned with. As the competition goes on, the value of the promotion increases. Pictured are Simon O’Brien from the Dail Bar, Barry Farnell from The Front Door, Dave Coen from The Bridge Bar, Tuam, Seamus Burke from the Stock Exchange, Paul Grealish from The Kings Head,Ronnie Greaney from the Dew Drop, Organiser Niall Mc Nelis, Hazel Hendy of Galway Simon and Ollie Turner from Galway Bay FM

Friday the 13th might be lucky or unlucky for some, but it is certainly the day for Galway’s second free public exhibition for ‘instagramers’ at Food For Thought on Abbey Street. This is the first cross border exhibition of it’s kind and the event was already held in Portadown in April, with huge success. For those who don’t already know, instagram is a free app and quirky way to share photography with the world. Galwegian, Aidan Coughlan met Gavin Mc Kay from Co.

Armagh through the app and, after a few meetings, they came up with the idea of hosting a cross border event to exhibit our county’s talented photographers. Having received over 1,500 entries, with images capturing key moments from the likes of the Volvo Ocean Race, the Galway Races and the Galway Arts Festival, as well as picturesque Connemara, the free exhibition promises to promote the best that Galway has to offer.

Organiser Myriam Leggieri explains that “there is a serious shortage of female IT developers in the country and across the world, as well as in the professions of science, technology, engineering and maths generally. There is no reason why this should be the case except for a lack of exposure to such environments. Events such as ‘Rails Girls’ directly address this issue and empower girls to take the first step in acquiring the skills to conquer one of the last great frontiers of science, namely the World Wide Web.”

S

unny Juddy has worked her magic with some unique upstyling by creating a fashion crazy festival outfit for those who want to take a walk on the wildside. With a simple black bra, a colourful skirt and some inspired layering, you can recreate the look with your own style. All you need is a basic black bra, a glue gun, some small mirrors (available from Mr Price), hairband, lace and a bit of imagination!

The Top: Cut a piece of colourful fabric, preferably from an old skirt so you can co-ordinate your outfit. Place the fabric on top of the front of the black bra. Wrap a piece of stretched cotton around the

middle - between the cups - to give it shape and hold it in place. Pin the fabric onto the bra and then glue it down, from the back, with the glue gun. Simply cut around the leftover fabric and voila, you have a newly recycled costume top.

Headband, Bag and Shoes: Take a felt covered black hair band and cover with black lace, available from any haberdashery shop. Glue small mirrors onto the band, and repeat with an old black handbag and shoes. Now you are ready to take your disco queen outfit to the festival and be the belle of the field. Or at least you will certainly be noticed! Sunny is pictured with outgoing City Mayor, Padraig Conneely.
