€2millionforMoycullenGreenway The old railway line situated along the Corrib between NUIG and Moycullen could be given a new lease of life - as funding of €2 million has been secured for the greenway project. If it goes ahead, pending the participation of landowners and gaining planning permission etc, then the disused section of the Galway-Clifden railway line will be transformed into a trail suitable for cyclists of all ages and abilities. It is the next step in the process.

The CRAIC in Galway were in Coyotes Late Bar for the Miss Galway finale on Thursday, April 10th, where Leah Tiernan from Knocknacarra was announced as the winner of ‘Miss Galway 2014’. 18 contestants
took to the catwalk, with their supporters cheering them on for each round, and also for their on-stage interviews with MC Declan Gardiner. This year 1st and 2nd Runner Ups, Tanya O’Brien from Loughrea and
Nuala Gorham from Carna, will also get a chance at entering the Miss Ireland National Beauty Pageant on July 9th. They will both go through to the Wild Card Semi-Final in Dublin July 6th. Good luck ladies! (RC)

Galway hosts European DJ Festival
D
j’s from across Europe are coming to Galway for the Easter weekend for the Community Skratch Games, 2014 at the Bierhaus. The free festival was established in the city eight years ago - the first of its kind set up around cooperation rather than competition in the world! The event was set up to raise awareness of Dj hip hop culture at a time when competitive based events were coming to an end in Ireland. Organisers saw a new opportunity to bring what they love to a wider audience, without the pressure of competition, and it has grown from strength to strength.
Among this year’s line-up are world freestyle and UK scratch champion Chile, who will join Enron and Jimmy Hatetank for a walk on the scratchier side on Saturday, April 19th. Sunday, April 20th, is set aside for the producer’s showcase. There will be a ‘bridge of the Starship Enterprise’ vibe, as lots of machines with flashing lights take over the Bierhaus stage. Classically trained guitarist, Daniel Jacobson, will don his production alias ZoiD, Lewis James will showcase his hyperfunk and Dave Hayden will perform live for the first time. It’s set to be another vintage year for the Skratch set.

ormer Ireland Rugby coach, Eddie O’Sullivan, had the advantage when he found himself in the line out for a hair cut at Valair hairdressing on Market Street. It was a scrum to get to his tresses, as he was tackled by the expert hands of the team at Valair. Eddie was on side to help the salon celebrate their first year in business at their city centre location. Owner Valerie Cooke was “delighted” when Eddie took the time out from his busy schedule to pop in to the salon as she is “a big rugby fan”. The Galway girl from Monivea has been involved in hairdressing since she was 15-years-old and always had a passion for styling and style. “Rugby is very big in Galway and where I come from!” she says, “and I really appreciate Eddie popping in to get his hair cut and help us to celebrate our first year on Market Street. He has a really busy schedule, so it was great that he could make it and

have his hair cut here. He was awful nice.” Valair’s official birthday is on April 26th and a signed jersey by the man himself will be given away to one lucky winner. The past year has “been really good” explains Valerie, and they have built up loyal customers “which we value very much”. “I have a great team and I couldn’t be happier,” she says, “we have already expanded with our colour suite upstairs and I hope to expand again over the next six months.” The colour suite is the perfect location for private parties and hens who want to hit the town looking their very best. The city centre location is ideal, and all of the staff are highly qualified colour technicians, who keep up-to-date with the latest hairdressing techniques. Valerie steers the salon with her 19 years of experience, which includes a place on the Irish Hairdressing Team in 2005.

wenty future boxing champions commenced training this week at the Black Dragon Kickboxing Club for the White Collar Boxing programme to raise funds for Galway Hospice. The 17 men and 3 women will train for 8 weeks under Pete Foley and his excellent team in the Black Dragon’s state of the art gym before stepping into the ring on Fight Night in the Menlo Park Hotel on Friday, 6th June. They will work on boxing fitness and technique on Tuesdays and Thursdays, with additional sparring practice on Saturdays. Your Craic squad is represented by
fitness instructor Dara Kelly and photographer Darius Ivan, who were pushed to their limits this week while getting to grips with punching, skipping, situps, jabs, hooks and fancy footwork. It’s too early yet to place your bets… Dara is already showing a competitive streak and Darius says his energy has skyrocketed as a result of the training. We’ll keep you informed over the next 8 weeks. Judging by the dedication of all 20 participants in Week One, we’re in for a hell of a show on Fight Night! I
t’s not often you meet someone who has been in the famous red chair on the Graham Norton show. For those of you who don’t know what it’s all about, a willing victim submits to telling a story about their lives on screen by sitting in a large red armchair, and can be dumped out at will by the quick witted talk show host, or one of his celebrity guests.

It takes nerves of steel, and a funny tale, to make it through without being unceremoniously thrown backwards - having barely finished a few sentences. And yet, recently I met Galway girl Michelle Curley, who did just that, by appearing on the show in 2011 and telling her ‘red chair’ tale. Did our gal make it to the end? Nope, she was tipped out by the hand of Sir Cliff Richard and “has not been a fan of him ever since!”

comedian Mickey Flanagan alongside crooner Cliff. “Once I had my tickets, I was asked by email if I wanted to participate in the red chair,” she explains. “I’ve had a few mishaps in my short life so I said ‘what the heck’ I might as well do it for the craic! It was very nerve wracking, as you couldn’t actually see Graham or any of the guests. I was talking straight into the camera, so I had no idea when the lever was going to be pulled. As it was being recorded on a weekday, I just went straight from work, so I had no time to fuss over an outfit or anything. You don’t get any special preference for going into the red chair – so I didn’t get to meet any of the guests! I had just moved from Galway to London at the time, but am back in the city now,” she says. Michelle hasn’t been put off by her ‘red chair’ experiences. Sadly, Cliff Richard lost a fan in the taping of the series, but our Michelle has been left with a new tale to tell!

he’s on her way to stardom, after 18-year-old Clodagh Lawlor from Newmarket On Fergus, Co Clare, scooped the Coyote Factor title after a tough competition. She is also through to the second round of the X Factor and is in with a chance of appearing on the TV talent show. We spend 5 minutes with the talented singer.
What’s your style of music: Pop/ country I think! I can never pick because I love all kinds of music. How do you feel about the X Factor? I’m excited! I was so shocked when they told me that I was going to be auditioning for the show. I’m singing either London Grammar’s song ‘strong’ or ‘broken hearted’ by Karmin. X factor is an opportunity for me. I was once told to use any opportunity that comes my way; if they work, then great; if they don’t, I won’t lose anything - because the only thing I wanted was what the opportunity could have given me. I’ve nothing to lose, but a lot to win. What was the experience like? Well I haven’t gotten through exactly yet. There were thousands there, I’d say about 4,000 people. 500 were picked from that for Sunday’s auditions, and then 150 were let through for the Monday auditions in front of the executive producers. Now only 50 are going to be picked from the 150. I hope I make it! If it’s for me it won’t pass, and that’s all I

keep telling myself. I won’t know for six weeks. It’s going to be a long six weeks! What is your ambition for the future? I’d love for my career to be in music. It’s all I’ve ever wanted. I’m going to try really hard to make it happen. I busk on Shop Street and I don’t have a job because I really can’t see myself doing anything else. Also I’m repeating my Leaving Cert and to be quite honest - I hate it! I don’t want to do anything else but music, so I’m gonna give it a heck of a go, and see where it leads me to :) Favourite food? Italian. Yummmmmmmy! If you were stranded on a desert island, what three items would you bring? Food,water and a pillow! If you had a superpower, what would it be? I’d love to be like Sabrina the Teenage Witch, as she can zap her fingers to do all sorts of magic. in GALWAY

Mad Hatters Tea Party! If you are a mad hatter, then you could be in with a chance to win a Philip Treacy original at a special event organised by Positive Mental Health. The Mad Hatters Tea Party takes place at the Ardilaun Hotel on April 27th from 3-5pm to raise vital funds for the programme. The initiative targets 14-16 year olds, to ensure that any mental health concerns are detected, understood and prevented before they escalate.
It is run by volunteer trainers and facilitators, and they are in need of support. Their services help those who are vulnerable to the likes of cyber-bullying, binge drinking and low self esteem, and they deliver it to Secondary Schools across Galway. Along with a Philip Treacy original up for grabs, there is also a chance to win a hotel stay for two, as you enjoy afternoon tea and create your very own headpiece. The best, wins!
