Welcome to TheCRAIC Welcome to the 16th edition of the Craic in Galway magazine. We often say it is Galway’s eclectic mix that makes up its beating heart, from glamorous black tie balls to fun night’s out on the town, from charity fundraisers to just a bit of a boogie, we have captured it all. Our photographers have been out and about and we are packed with nightlife snaps, your two week daily diary, news, views, health, fashion and features. Over the next two weeks, we will have reality celebrity, model, actress and newlywed, Vogue Williams, on one side of town and a Mr and Mrs Culchie event on the other. It is this crazy combination that makes Galway unique. We are an arty bunch after all, as the Muscailt festival offers a host of theatre, visual spectacles and all the fun of a Victorian Fair at NUIG. You can even get a free portrait painted, if you have the time to sit for the artist. And how can we forget Valentine’s Day – yes many of us want to – but let’s share the love, do a random act of kindness, or simply spend the day self hugging. Le Petit Rouge on Dominick Street are celebrating Valentines weekend with a Caribbean twist. Cupid will strike his bow from France, to the colourful Caribbean, without having to leave Galway’s west end. Our diversity is our strength. And at the Galleon restaurant - you can have your tea leaves read to discover if he or she really is the one! Find out everything that’s happening across the city and county with our little but large magazine. Happy Reading, Sure it’s all a bit of craic

A Ball for Galway’s Tiny Dancer By Rebecca CASSERLY

T

he Tiny Dancer Ball took place in the Salthill Hotel, Galway on 25th January in aid of the Sunni-Mae Trust. I went along with the Oranmore unit of the Civil Defence to support the event. This was a fantastic opportunity for Galwegians to come together and show our support for our Tiny Dancer Lily-Mai, who is battling the rare childhood cancer, neuroblastoma. The black-tie event proved to be a great success and a memorable night all round; kicking off with a mulled wine reception followed by a

scrumptious three course meal. Comedy from impressionist Shane Cunningham, had the crowd in stitches and afterwards, we were treated to a breath-taking ballet performance. Galway band, The Lewd Tunes had the dance floor hopping all night long! Credit must go to the many sponsors and the organisers of the event, who helped make the Tiny Dancer Ball a very special night full of CRAIC. Looking forward to next year’s event already and wishing Lily-Mai the best.

Happy Birthday, Mr Playboy Shahira Barry hopes to celebrate with Hugh Hefner By Avril HORAN Athenry stunner, Shahira Barry, hopes to be back in LA and by the side of Hugh Hefner by April this year, as the Playboy mogul celebrates his 88th birthday on April 9th. Shahira, who entered the limelight after spending time at the famous mansion last summer, is in the process of acquiring her US visa, so that she can relocate to LA permanently, and seek out new work opportunities there. Trained as a teacher, the young starlet has been bitten by the celebrity

teaching qualification behind her, she is keeping her two feet firmly on the ground. “I love Hef,” she says, “he is such a gent, nice and funny and down to earth. I always wanted to go to Hollywood, and was invited for a casting for Playboy. I couldn’t make it, but kept in touch and was invited to the mansion. I never thought in my wildest dreams I would end up there, I thought I might just get as far as the office! “I am trying to get back for Hugh’s

Recently pictured by our roving photographer Darius Ivan with a charming young gentleman, Shahira is remaining coy about her beau as she is concentrating on her career for the foreseeable future. The softly spoken 22-year-old has fame in her sights and, while best known for her modelling, wants to explore new avenues in the music and acting industries. Yet with a

birthday; it would be so amazing to say I celebrated the birthday of such an international icon. I am getting my visa at the moment and hope it will clear by the end of the month. There are so many opportunities out in LA. I will be meeting with a music manager and producer. It has been my ultimate dream since I was 4-yearsold. I am delighted that I have a degree, but I am a show biz girl at heart and I love every bit of it,” she says. in GALWAY

h i l e w r i t ing w i t h Daniel O’Donnell and Grammy nominee, Billy Yates, is all in a day’s work for Galway’s Marc Roberts, he has received recognition in his own right for best original song at a gala awards ceremony in Mullingar. The Eurovision sweetheart has gone back to his country roots for his latest album, and scooped the award for his self penned song, ‘Wrong Road Again’ at the event organised by the Sunday World. As the title suggests, the song is about a failing romantic relationship and is on his latest album entitled Now and Then. “I was thrilled,” says Marc, “it’s absolutely brilliant to get any-

thing as a writer - especially to get the best original song. I am very happy with it. Writing is a craft and it’s all down to inspiration. As Gary Barlow says, it’s nice to share the birth experience when you are writing with someone else, but I am so delighted to have won an award for my own creation.” For Marc, inspiration comes in many forms, and not necessarily his own personal circumstances. And the proof is in the pudding. He has had three worldwide platinum album sales with Daniel O’Donnell, regularly tours across Europe, USA and Australia and is set to embark on an all Ireland tour with Mike Denver. In his spare time, he is a television host, radio broadcaster, performer and MC. His ability to diversify has ensured his place on the music scene, despite its harsh nature. in GALWAY

• 1pm: The Bubbly Baby Market takes place today at the Clybaun Hotel where you can buy and sell your mother, baby and toddler wares.

It’s all down to “determination and hard work”. “You can face rejection on a daily basis,” he explains. “I always say one man’s floor is another man’s ceiling. And the industry has been really good to me. If you said to me ten years ago that I would have done all I have, I would have been so happy with that. Now I want even more!” Marc has been lucky to collaborate with some of the best, and was recently contacted by Nashville based country singer, Billy Yates. Yates has composed for the likes of the late George Jones and together, they created a song over the internet – as they emailed back and forth from Galway to the USA. “When he contacted me, this melody just came into my head

and I sent it to him,” he says. “We went back and forth until the wee hours of the morning. He suggested a title, I sent him a verse and it went from there. I am inspired by everything really. The more people I meet, the more stories I hear, and I mould them into song. They might not be biographical, but I often draw on my childhood too. I guess subconsciously you do take on your own story.”

Galway has adopted him and it is his home. You can find out what Marc is up to at www.marcroberts.ie. and his album, Now and Then, is available on iTunes and at OMG Zhivago.

Country music is his first love for a man who knew he wanted to be a singer songwriter from the age of five. It is “becoming cool again” he says, as people camp out overnight for tickets to see the legendary Gareth Brooks in Dublin. One of Marc’s first records was his version of ‘if tomorrow never comes’ which was frequently played by Gay Byrne. Originally from Crossmolina, Mark admits he is a Mayo man at heart but that

We spend 5 minutes with Galway’s own reality star Layla Flaherty, who was cast as a maneater in the reality show ‘Desperate Scousewives’ on E 4. She has also featured on Sky Living’s ‘Chick Fix’, TV3’s ‘Celebrity Salon’ and as a special guest on RTE’s ‘Big Fat Breakfast Show At Night’. She has appeared as our cover girl for the Craic 13, and was one of the first people to secure a conviction against a cyber bully, who was using twitter to harass her. What is your dream?

Are you man eater?

My dream is to one day have children and a family of my own and live happily ever after.

No. I am far from being a man eater! In fact I’m the complete opposite. I did a TV show with sky living a few years ago, and I simply said that I find it hard to find a guy that is not intimidated by me! That was exaggerated and turned into me being a man eater. Because I’m tall and very confident (and judging from previous experiences) I tend to ‘scare’ men! But I certainly don’t ‘eat them’.

What is your favourite music and movie? My favourite music is funky house and my favourite movie is Gladiator. Describe a typical day for you? I’m quite boring on a regular day. It’s all about no make-up, fitness and having time to catch up on things. I get up quite early and go to the king fisher gym for an hour. Then I’ll have breakfast and take the dog out for a long walk. In the afternoon, I’ll either have pilates, fencing or swimming. Late in the afternoon, I will spend about an hour doing emails and skype a few friends. In the evening, I will prepare dinner, watch some TV and go to bed early. I’m all about diet and exercise and a good sleep pattern during the week. Are you single?

Did you ever regret joining reality shows? I had my moments where I thought what have I done! But I try never to regret anything in life. What’s for us won’t pass us, and what’s meant to be will be. Doing reality TV hasn’t been the easiest route for me, going on my experience on Desperate Scousewives, but it has made me stronger and wiser. So to say I regret it would be a lie. It’s also opened up so many doors in the TV and modelling industry, both in Ireland & the UK. It’s always a positive to have opportunities open to you.

Yes! in GALWAY

“SLIPPING BY” The Amazing Apples By Avril HORAN Galway band, the Amazing Apples are set to release their new single in March. with footage from Boston. The Amazing Apples will be touring around the country in the next few weeks, to Athlone, Roscommon, Donegal and Cork and are hoping to secure a date in Whelans, Dublin. This 5 piece Irish/Americana band are shaking off their covers beginnings to emerge with their own unique sound. iam Cullinane’s journey to undertake the world famous Camino pilgrimage walk has taken a step further, as he returns to the US for important treatment. Each visit brings him closer to achieving his goal of completing the walk between France and Spain in May, and is being documented by filmmaker, David Souto. David successfully achieved part funding for the project through a fundit campaign. The film follows the popular Galway man as he undertakes his biggest challenge to date. After joining the French Foreign Legion, the go-getting Liam contacted a severe form of meningitis at the age of 26, leaving him with brain damage and unable to walk. Since then, he has fought hard to recover, enduring intense therapy, and has never given up.

ry that touches on his own experience. “I had the idea in mind for over three years,” he explains. “A friend of mine was paralysed in Spain jumping into the water and I wanted to film his experiences. When I came back to Galway, I approached Liam about the idea and he said yes. The Camino walk will be a great experience for Liam. He doesn’t see disability anymore; it is about his ability to overcome anything that has been thrown his way. “We have been working on the documentary for over a year and a half now and it is really coming together. We went to Atlanta last July and the treatment was really good for him – helping him with his speech and balance. He returns this month and, all going well, will be ready for the walk in May. Hopefully we will get enough funding to finish the project, and if not, we will do it anyway!”

emilyfashionfiend.com & Intrigue.ie “This is a typical outfit for me on my days off: something comfortable yet stylish. There is something great about being able to wear that first pop of colour in spring after the dark shades of a winter wardrobe, so this green coat from Sheinside.com fits the bill completely. Teamed with these leather-look leggings from Born Clothing and tan boots from New Look, I love wearing the androgynous style that is evident on the SS’14 catwalk, but giving it a little twist of femininity with this burgundy fedora and pussybow scarf from Miss Selfridge.” If you would like to be featured in the Craic in Galway street style section get in touch: becboopfashionistaworld@gmail.com

TREND ALERT: The latest bridal trend that has the fashion world buzzing – the bridal jumpsuit is an easy-to-wear alternative to the heavy, fussy wedding gown. We love the J. Crew lace bridal jumpsuit which was recently unveiled. It’s pretty, feminine and just quirky enough to pass the Craic fashion test. Even better, you can wear it to lots of parties after your big day! If you’re not brave enough to try the bridal jumpsuit, or if you simply can’t resist embracing the opportunity to wear an elaborate dress, we think it would make a fashion statement for a rehearsal dinner or the day after the wedding.

Le bricfeasta a réiteach atá chomh tapa céanna ach níos spéisiúla ná gránach nó tósta, tá dhá rud le déanamh: 1. Smaoinigh ar rudaí neamhghnácha (glasraí suaithfhriochta, feoil, cnónna, iasc, maróg ríse, leite le quinoa/eorna/speilt). 2. Bíodh sé an-éasca (ullmhaigh gach rud an oíche roimhe). Craicin’ good breakfast! Breakfast is the most automatic of meals – and often the unhealthiest (sugary cereal – say no more). We tend to resist changing our breakfast habits, even when we manage to ban not-so-nutritious snacks and make healthier lunch and dinner choices. To make breakfast more interesting but just as quick, the trick is twofold: 1. Think outside the box (veggie stirfry, meat, nuts, fish, rice pudding, quinoa/barley/spelt porridge). 2. Make it easy (prepare ingredients and lay the table the night before).
