Vereta Lee, candidate for the Louisiana House of Rep. Special To The Weekly Press BATON ROUGE, La – Vereta Lee, candidate for the Louisiana House of Representatives for District 29, announced that she has now been endorsed by almost every elected official covering District 29 as well as the entire family of former Representative Ronnie Edwards. The District 29 seat includes parts of East and West Baton Rouge Parishes. The seat was recently left vacant when Representative Ronnie Edwards passed away on February 24th. Officials publicly endorsing Lee in the race are: Senator Regina Barrow, Senator Yvonne Dorsey, Representative Barbara Carpenter, Representative Robbie Carter, Representative Randall Gaines, EBR School Board Member Dr. Kenyatta Smith, EBR School Board Member Dawn Collins, EBR Constable Tracy Batieste, and Tyra Banks-Sterling, a former candidate for the District 29 seat. Mrs. Gladys Hammond, mother of Representative Ronnie Edwards, joined in endorsing Vereta Lee, saying, “We need a person whose character, compassion and ideas are similar to Ronnie’s. I believe with all my heart that Vereta T. Lee is that person!” Senator Regina Barrow represented District 29 in the House before being elected to the Senate. Senator Barrow said, “I still care deeply for everyone in my old district and I always will. That’s why I am strongly endorsing Vereta Lee.” Senator Yvonne Colomb said, “We’ve all known and respected Vereta for years and it feels wonderful to be able to endorse her. Vereta Lee is honorable, caring, and completely independent. She has the right ideas to really make a positive difference in the House.”

East Baton Rouge Metro Council

Louisiana students at the “Raise the Age” rally in Baton Rouge BATON ROUGE- On Monday, the Louisiana Senate Finance Committee unanimously approved the Raise the Age Act, which would effectively submit 17-year-olds who commit delinquent acts to the authority of the juvenile criminal justice system, rather than automatically trying them as adults, or keeping them

in adult prisons for detention prior to trial. Courts would retain discretion to send juveniles to an adult prison in more violent cases. The change would be implemented over the next four years. Senate Bill 324 by Senator J. P. Morrell is a key part of Governor John Bel Edwards’ agenda for the 2016

Regular Legislative Session. “There is no doubt that members of this committee took a bold step toward meaningful criminal justice reform, and I sincerely thank them for their decision,” said Gov. Edwards. “Louisiana is one of only nine states where 17-year-old offenders are recogSee ACT, on page 3

BATON ROUGE, La - At its meeting on Wednesday, the East Baton Rouge Metro Council voted, 8-4, to overturn Mayor Kip Holden’s decision to veto a plan that would have promised economic development in North Baton Rouge. The council spent five months discussing the topic before passing the measure, which would have provided tax credits to future developers who choose to locate north of Florida Boulevard. “There’s a lot of areas in that North Baton Rouge corridor that are very blighted, that there’s not a lot of development in,” said Councilman John Delgado who authored the ordinance. “Really the goal is to bring economic opportunities to North Baton

Rouge. For many, many years, it’s just been forgotten.” The mayor’s decision garnered quite a bit of controversy last week after he used his first veto since he has been in office to halt the plan. He said the proposal had good intentions but needs to be adjusted before he can support it. “It says you can have a piece of property. You can go and build on that property if you’re in certain areas and you can then virtually lease that property out to somebody else and not pay any taxes whatsoever so therefore it’s not fair,” Holden said. The council needed a twothirds vote at Wednesday night’s meeting in order to bypass the mayor’s action.

Judge Appoints Trust Company to Temporarily Oversee Prince’s Estate, Identify Heirs MINNEAPOLIS — A Minnesota judge appointed a corporate trust company on Wednesday to temporarily oversee Prince’s multimillion-dollar estate, saying the emergency appointment was necessary because the superstar musician doesn’t appear to have a will and immediate decisions must be made about his business interests. Judge Kevin Eide granted a request from Prince’s sister to appoint Bremer Trust as special administrator, giving the company authority to manage and supervise Prince’s assets and identify his heirs. Eide said Prince had no appointed personal representative but had substantial assets and owned businesses that require immediate attention and ongoing management. The judge also noted that identities and addresses of Prince’s heirs need to be deter-

Prince also has five surviving half-siblings who could share in the estate. Eide wrote that Prince died “intestate,” meaning he did not have a valid will, and said there See ESTATE, on page 2

He was 57.
