Meet the Ronen Family: Music and Majesty

F

or the category of Most Romantic Third Date, the metaphorical trophy goes to the Ronens with their spur-of-the-moment trip to Prague and Budapest.

In 2009, Ofer and Shayna Ronen met on Match.com. Their connection was instant and their chemistry undeniable. It was that week-long third date that confirmed they not only liked traveling together: they loved it. And they definitely loved each other. Ten months later they both quit their full-time jobs and left to travel the world for a whole year. On the first day of that trip Ofer proposed. Together they visited 26 countries before traveling back to Manhattan for their wedding. Shayna reflects, “Needless to say after a year of traveling and wedding planning we were thrilled to come home to California and put down some roots!”

In December of 2019, the Ronens moved into their new westside home. “We dreamed of living close to downtown so we could take advantage of the amazing restaurants, shops, and events Danville has to offer. Now that we live here, we walk downtown almost every day and we are looking forward to so many more years ahead enjoying this incredible community.” One of the driving factors of being on the westside was the proximity to Shayna’s nonprofit, I Can Do That! Performing Arts Center.

They recently underwent a huge transformation and relocation, and now can be found as both a source of learning, entertainment, and also great coffee!

After graduating from New York University with a degree in Psychology, Linguistics and Philosophy, Shayna came back to the area where she grew up. After seeing the need for a local performing arts company, she started her nonprofit here in Danville with her longtime friend, Jarusha Ariel. Their first focus was contributing to the arts education of the youth in the area. It has now grown to a fantastic theatre with yearly productions, classes for all ages (including adults!), and guest instructors that would make Broadway jealous! They, of course, faced challenges in the last couple of years, as Covid hit right when they were starting to fundraise for their new space.

Finding a way to stay operational was a real test, especially with the personal move the Ronens had just completed too, “In fact, for 6 months we ran theatre classes out of our driveway because we couldn’t operate our nonprofit inside due to COVID. I was worried about being too loud or a nuisance for our new neighbors, but instead they all came and told us how amazing it was to see so much joy over a period that was so difficult.” A true testament to the power of laughter and music - something I Can Do That! has in abundance.

Ofer grew up in Israel. He has a Bachelor of Science degree and a Masters in Computer Engineering from the University of Michigan and an MBA from Cornell. He is what his wife lovingly calls “a serial entrepreneur,” specializing in new tech concepts. He founded the first startup to ever graduate from Google’s Area 120 incubator. He is a lifelong runner, biker and swimmer, bringing all three interests together by completing triathlons. Their hobbies never stray too far from their daily lives, “We both find so much joy and fulfillment in what we do and often find that our time for hobbies and extra curriculars end up being spent learning more about our trades.” The whole family always sets aside time to stay connected to their Jewish roots by participating in the Chabad of Danville and San Ramon and attending other Israeli festivities.

Shayna and Ofer have two lively boys, Ari and Cobi. Ari is 8 years old and a talented musician. Over the last year he taught himself beatboxing: he can hum and beatbox at the same time.

Shayna said that if he hears a song once, he’ll know it forever.

Cobi is an active 6 year old, taking his newfound skill of bike riding to the next level by riding everywhere… and he means everywhere.

He also just lost his first two teeth! Cobi is a bonafide animal lover, and was the driving force behind the Ronens getting their twoyear-old Maltipoo, Lilah. “We gave her that name because she is mostly black and Lilah means ‘night’ in Hebrew. Lilah is always looking to play with our feet or to chase a ball and is the perfect cuddly nap partner.”

True to the performers that they are, the motto that the Ronens model their lives after are: “To succeed in life you need three things: a wishbone, a backbone, and a funny bone,” said by Reba McEntire. They’ve worked so hard to make their dreams come true.

Shayna says, “We love that we live the life that we have designed.

We do what we love at work and we do what we love at home. Ofer and I are a great team and always looking at how to empower and support each other. Our hope is to teach our boys to dream big and find their own joy whatever it may be and that hopefully their gifts can make a positive impact in the world.”

Baked Pasta with Ham, Broccoli and Cheese

S

eptember is here! That means the kids are back at school and we are all in a mad rush to get a dozen things done each day between now and bedtime. It’s times like this that we need to find something filling and easy to clean up after. I think this is a casserole that checks both those boxes. This is especially great if you have left over ham from a previous meal that you want to use up. It also makes great leftovers for lunch… if you end up having any leftovers.

Baked Pasta with Ham, Broccoli and Cheese • • • • • • • • • • • •

4 TBS butter, divided 1/4 C. fine dry bread crumbs 8 oz (Half a box) penne pasta 2 tsp. All purpose flour 2 C. milk Salt and Pepper, to taste 1 clove garlic, minced 6oz. Diced cooked ham (not deli meat) 1 C. Cooked broccoli. chopped 1 C. Shredded Mozzarella cheese 1 C. Shredded Provolone cheese 1/4 C. Parmesan cheese

Preheat the oven to 375 degrees. Using the microwave, melt 1 TBS of the butter and mix with dry bread crumbs, then set aside. Cook the pasta according to the package directions, drain it well and set aside, but keep it warm. In a heavy saucepan, melt the rest of the butter and add the flour. Whisk it constantly for 1 minute on medium heat and slowly add the cold milk and whisking it well. Bring it to a boil and lower the heat to a simmer, then allow it to cook for 7-8 minutes and thicken. Add the garlic, broccoli, ham, all the cheeses, salt and pepper. Stir it well until the cheese melts. Stir the cooked pasta into the cheese sauce and pour everything into a greased 9x9 casserole dish.

Cover with foil and bake for 25 minutes. Peel back the foil and sprinkle evenly with the bread crumbs and cook for 5 more minutes or until golden brown.

y family and I take a trip to Santa Cruz every summer after school gets out. Last year we spent most of our time on the beach, since all of the rides and stores were closed down. But this year we got to go to the Boardwalk and the arcade and explore all around Santa Cruz.

I loved riding the carousel and trying to throw the metal ring into the clown’s mouth. It’s hard, but I got really close a lot of times. My dad and uncle made it in. I also had a lot of fun riding the Sky Ride with my Uncle Andy. You can see so far when you’re up there moving slowly over the whole Boardwalk.

One day we left the beach and went to check out the Mystery Spot. Have you ever been? I went once when I was little, before we moved to California. This time I was old enough to help in some of the demonstrations. The tour guide said he thought it was aliens that made the Mystery Spot act the way it does... but I’m not convinced.

My little sister Penny is always doing funny things like putting a bumper sticker on her face!

Teaching Kids about Sportsmanship

laying organized sports is a great way for your kids to burn off energy, meet new friends and discover their passion. Whether or not your child is athletically gifted, sports can be the foundation of many friendships. The best athletes are the ones with good attitudes. Here are five tips to help you teach your child about good sportsmanship.

Explain Sportsmanship Defining and explaining what sportsmanship is will help your child understand what the expectations are. Talking about the importance of being a good sport shows them why they should act in a certain way, giving them a foundation for their actions.

Set a Good Example Teaching by example is the name of the game when it comes to sportsmanship. Being a good sport yourself will demonstrate your respect for the game and everyone involved. Your child will look to you to set an example of how they should behave.

Focus on the Fun, Not the Score Remind your children that sports are just games. Keep the focus on the activity and the enjoyment that comes along with it—not what the scoreboard says. Having a good attitude, no matter what, will develop into a habit that places love of the game over winning.

Cheer for All Team Members Most sports are played with teams, not just individuals. Being supportive of the entire group shows camaraderie and team spirit. Teach your child that every player is an important member of the squad.

Even if your child didn’t score, being supportive of his or her teammates is important.

Show Respect Regardless of the score, showing respect for all players, coaches and officials is important. This also applies to fans sitting on the sidelines. Teach your child to accept a loss without lashing out at the other team and to act humbly after a win. Respecting the rules of the game and those officiating are an absolute must.

Thank You, John Doyle!

o many, John Doyle has played multiple positions in his lifelong soccer career; U.S. Men’s National Team and World Cup member, Olympian, teammate, coach, and Earthquakes General Manager to name a few. But to countless families in the Town of Danville & Alamo communities, he has been the strongest influencer on why the Mustang Soccer Club exists today. After 21 years as the Director of Coaching, John Doyle has stepped away from his Mustang Soccer duties and moved to Copperopolis, CA. Mustang Soccer’s current Board of Directors President, Richard Northing, recently commented, “John’s wonderful leadership as our Director of Coaching has instilled his ‘player first philosophy’ within the Mustang coaching curriculum, where it will live forever. I can’t thank John enough for all his contributions to the club.” Richard went on to list many of John’s accomplishments during his tenure; created a Top 20 girls program in the country, built out the Mustang Soccer Complex, created relationships with many prominent suppliers, and established Mustang as the Bay Area’s leading community-based boys and girls soccer club.

Scott MacDougall, a longtime friend of John Doyle and Alumnus of the Mustang Soccer Board of Directors, shared the same sentiments, “John took a flawed competitive program at Mustang and changed it to be a community-first minded program; with rules centered around providing players within our community the opportunity to play within their hometown, with their friends, and at the playing level of their choosing.” Scott acknowledged all of the programs and levels that Mustang Soccer currently offers; ECNL, Competitive Elite, Competitive Premier, Rec Plus, Rec, and Juniors.

John would like to be remembered for “helping to create a communitybased culture where our players and families were always put first.

Our competitive program grew to 50+ teams, all with professional coaches that care about our players’ development on and off the field, who cultivate these players to be adaptable in any system or style of play. It is important to lead by example, I always tried to treat

Three days of golf, good friends, laughter, competition and parties no doubt play a role in longevity and health of the women that are members of the Incline Village Ladies Golf Club. No one knows how to put on a golf tournament like these women.

Each July, the Incline Village Ladies Golf Club holds the MemberGuest tournament. It is an all-out event which starts with a practice golf day and ends with a catered luncheon in one of the member’s home. On July 11-13th, the IVLGC Member-Guest Golf Tournament’s theme was “Mamma Mia, Here we go again!” Each member teamed up with their guest for the purchases of “Magic Putts”, parties, coordinating outfits and 3 rounds of golf at the Championship Golf Course in Incline Village, Nevada.

On Sunday, each team went out to play the course for practice and

then headed over to a home on the beautiful Lake Tahoe. The threeacre estate located on the North Shore of Lake Tahoe welcomed nearly 80 women with valet parking, a hosted bar, and Mamma Mia themed décor. The charcuterie grazing table, the bartender topping off the wine and cocktails, and homemade desserts were amazing but only second to the setting and the company. Chatter and laughter of these ladies, dressed in Greek Isle and 60’s wear, could be heard over the Mamma Mia music playing in the background as they gathered at the tables on the back deck just feet from the shoreline.

On Monday, each two-some came ready with coordinating outfits, classic Greek Isle to 60’s/disco golf wear. The golf carts were

stocked with goodie bags, the rules, and the format for play. The Head Golf Pro, Kyle Thornburg, and 1st Assistant Golf Pro, Rob Bruce, welcomed each member and their guest by name. The service was fantastic. Everyone chatted, but there was a more serious feel on the first day as we headed to the driving range to warm up. The driving range was ready with buckets of balls and tees and the putting green was full of women determining how the greens were playing that morning. After a brief set of rules and instruction, it was off to the assigned hole on the course. Each person played their own ball. The best of the two scores was used for that hole. Each player had a Magic Putt. A player could use their Magic Putt when they landed on the green to make it a 1-Putt for the hole. Strategy is definitely involved in determining when to use the Magic Putt! The first day ended with a luncheon and a fancy scorecard and tee holder for each player.

On the second day of the tournament, the fresh coordinating themed golf outfits came paired with everyone’s best game face! This was the eclectic day. Each team could better their score from the day before, similar to a “do-over”, but they could not do worse. My mom and I played ok on the first day, but it was the second day that brought us up from 6th place to 3rd in our Flight! This is our 3rd member-guest tournament together and this year we were in the middle flight, 24 teams ahead of where we had placed the previous two years! We were called to the front of the crowd as our names were called out to

collect our prizes: Michael Aram decorative pewter bowls. It was a memorable weekend with my mom!

Tournaments can be fun, a little stressful, and a great experience. For many golf club tournaments, the players are serious but like to have fun. They often decorate their golf cart, have matching/coordinating outfits with their partner or foursome, and have great parties afterwards. The format of the tournaments are usually beneficial to all the players and take a bit of pressure off the players that may feel a bit more intimidated by the word “tournament”. Do not misinterpret or underestimate these women! They are strong athletic women with a competitive spirit.

Join a golf club, a men’s or women’s golf group and participate in one of their tournaments! It will be one of the most memorable golf days! The competition, fresh air, exercise, and fun will help promote longevity in you, too!

Communication Boards and Emergency Go-Bags at the DSCBA

I

magine being in an emergency with no way to communicate how you feel, if you are in pain and where it hurts. Perhaps you have limited language, you may have an intellectual or developmental disability and you are scared, hurt or maybe even in shock. The inability to communicate might sometimes turn into a behavior that could be misunderstood by the first responders and could result in unnecessary force or mistreatment. It also goes without saying the importance of being able to explain where or what hurts or the fear you have in getting into an ambulance or how the sounds of a siren could put you into sensory overload.

Recently, the Down Syndrome Connection of the Bay Area (DSCBA) worked with Danielle Bell, Emergency Coordinator for the San Ramon Valley Fire Protection District in providing printed/laminated communication boards which are low-tech Alternative and Augmentative Communication systems that allow those with language challenges to point to pictures that can help the interaction between the challenged communicator and the first responder.

Just to give you a better idea of the items in the GO bags they will be things like noise reduction headphones, battery chargers for wheelchairs/ scooter, sensory items, sleep masks, etc. A book, Going to the Hospital, is also available to help those who may need it.

Temporary Permits for Danville’s Outdoor Outdoor Dining Parklets Extended

A

t the Town Council meeting on July 6, 2021, the Town Council voted unanimously to extend temporary permits for Danville’s outdoor dining parklets until January 3, 2022. The parklets provide temporary outdoor seating for restaurants and have been a feature of downtown Danville since these permits were made available to

businesses in May 2020. Having additional outdoor seating in the parklets has helped restaurants begin to recoup some of the losses caused by the pandemic. Residents and visitors have also enjoyed the atmosphere of al fresco dining downtown and the majority of businesses were supportive of extending the outdoor parklets through the rest of the year.

The Town is currently working on efforts to update the Town’s Downtown Master Plan which will provide direction for future development and improvements in downtown Danville and provide opportunities for activated spaces for community enrichment. Expanded outdoor dining opportunities will be one of multiple components to the master plan update effort.

The Scoop on CoolSculpting

ou may have heard of cool sculpting from friends, TV commercials or magazine articles, but aren’t exactly sure what it is or how it works. This summer we’ve received many calls and requests for information, so I thought it would be good to provide an overview of this fat reduction procedure here.

“CoolSculpting” is the name of a product that was invented to safely freeze off stubborn fat from various areas of the body. This fat freezing method is also known as “cryolipolysis.” The scientists who invented this fat removal method were studying frostbite and its effect on fat. They discovered that fat freezes at a temperature that’s higher than the skin around it. These scientists harnessed this knowledge to create a device that targets fat to freeze it off while leaving your skin and other tissues unharmed.

CoolSculpting is an FDA-cleared device and procedure that requires no downtime, making it a realistic treatment option for both busy women and men alike. On the day of your procedure you can expect a highly trained practitioner to place one or more CoolSculpting pads on the target area(s). While you relax in the treatment room, the pads cool down very quickly to the precise fat-freezing temperature.

The pads typically remain on the target area(s) for around 30 to 45 minutes, during which time up to 20% of the fat cells in this targeted area will be destroyed. As for the final results, they can take up to a month or two. This is because your body needs time to clear out and eliminate these dead fat cells from your body. But once those fat cells are gone, they are gone for good.

Some of the more popular areas we use Coolsculpting to treat stubborn fat include ‘love handles’, hips, back, butt and below the bra line. The procedure also yields great results under the chin and along the jawline. Because of how non-invasive this treatment is, there is no down time after the procedure and very few risks. All in all, it is a very effective way to eliminate stubborn fat that is otherwise resistant to dieting and/or exercise.

The Times They Are A-Changing

s I write this article I see changes in so many aspects of our daily lives. We are still not certain how our future looks when we hear of the new variants of Covid continuing to infect people at alarming rates. Will the current vaccines protect us? Will we need new vaccines or booster shots to stay safe? For those of us with school age children, what we thought would be a ‘back to normal’ school year is quickly changing. Masks are now required when just a few weeks ago, the district said masks were optional. Will we be back to on-line learning by Christmas?

The Real Estate market is affected by all these changing factors. The moratorium for renters and landlords has been removed and extended multiple times. In August it was reinstated once more within days of it being lifted. Will the billions of renters and landlords be able to make up for the payments that have been deferred for the past year? Some are predicting a large sell off of property because the landlords are so far behind on payments that their only option will

be to sell. Where will all the renters go who will be evicted because they couldn’t make up the back rent? Will homeowners still have the urge to move to more urban communities because they can still work from home? Interest rates are expected to increase by Christmas time. Will the home buyer frenzie still be happening then as well or will things level out?

These changes are all BIG in terms of quality of life: We may face potential lock down or increased restrictions, changes in school guidelines; in person or remote, whether or not we work from home or go back to the office, should we stay in our house or move for a different way of life?

For most of us, our home is our biggest asset. But home is also our sanctuary. This is where we build memories and traditions. Buying or selling a home adds yet another change to your life. If you are feeling compelled to move either by choice or by circumstance, give yourself the time to plan it out. Acting in haste will only increase your stress and potentially influence your decisions in a way that won’t serve you in the long run. First discuss this within your family; prepare them for the move. Ring Sizing 101

proper fit for a ring is essential; too loose and you risk losing it - too tight and it’s uncomfortable and hard to remove. When your ring doesn’t fit properly, your first thought is to get it resized. Often, this is the safest, most permanent option. However, it’s not always the best choice, and temporary solutions can be ideal under certain circumstances unless you are confident your ring size is correct and a permanent or semi-permanent change. While we all work to lose the COVID “19 pounds,” here are some suggestions and advice.

When Not to Resize Your Ring

If you suddenly find your ring spinning on your finger, your first step should be to pinpoint the root cause. Fingers can shrink for many reasons, many of them temporary, like cold weather or weight loss.

Also consider the circumstances under which your ring was first fitted. Something obvious, like pregnancy, would cause your ring to fit more snugly. But the culprit could also be something more unexpected and seemingly trivial, like a high-salt meal right before your sizing.

Maybe you’re just really sensitive to temperature fluctuations. If your ring size seems to go up and down with the mercury, a temporary ring adjuster is perfect. Whether you need an interim solution until you reach your goal weight, or you need something you can take in and out indefinitely in accordance with the weather, read on to learn how to make a ring smaller without resizing.

When you think of taking your ring to your jeweler to be resized smaller, you likely think of a permanent reduction in the circumference of the band. That’s not the only option, though. Since every resizing can negatively affects the strength of the metal, it’s wise to consider adding to the ring instead, which maintains the integrity of the ring.

Sizing Beads

To make your ring smaller using sizing beads, a jeweler simply adds two small metal balls on the back part of the inside of your ring.

Sizing beads are an economical way to reduce the size of your ring. They’re perfect for reducing a ring and they’re great for keeping your ring upright on your finger.

Some Parting Advice

If your ring isn’t fitting quite right, take it off, store it safely and feel free to bring it in to one of our consultants. Their expert opinion will be able to tell you whether you should permanently resize your ring, have them apply an adjustable ring sizer like those previously discussed, or go with a plastic guard you can use as needed.

Always remember: The fewer times you resize your ring, the better. Each resize stretches and weakens the metal and eventually, you will increase your chances of damage or loss.

Do-It-Yourself Ring Sizers

If you’d prefer not to visit your jeweler or have an urgent need, there are ring sizers you can buy and apply yourself. Widely available, plastic ring adjusters are an inexpensive, quick option to solve your ring size issue right away. They’re basically little silicone wedges or sleeves that sit between your ring and your finger. At Padis, we call these “Ring Snuggies” and offer them complimentary.

They can easily be added or removed, but one downside is it can make your ring sit up higher on your finger.

Ring Sizers to Avoid

You might thus be tempted by DIY methods usually found via Google search that involve adhering something to your ring. Adhering anything not specifically made for jewelry is asking for trouble. Gold and platinum are typically nonreactive, but you can very easily do permanent damage and your skin might not react well to the foreign substance, either.
