GET ENGAGED! JOIN A COMMITTEE. The strength of the Lakewood Ranch Business Alliance has long been its core of dedicated and hardworking volunteers. Today, nearly 150 individuals, across 8 committees, generously donate their time each month to make the Alliance the go-to business organization in the Lakewood Ranch region. Their passion and energy have been instrumental in shaping our organization.

Communications Committee This committee is focused on all communications and technology that help our members connect with each other, with the Lakewood Ranch Community and our region as a whole.

The committee is integral in working to protect our brand by overseeing both internal and external communications across all platforms, media, website, social media, eblasts etc.

Programming Committee The Programming Committee’s role is to plan and implement educational programs and events. They strengthen your business through education and learning by identifying relevant business topics, and vetting potential speakers. This committee focuses on helping members to be the best version of themselves, both personally and professionally, by creating exciting and relevant luncheons, executive briefings, workshops and other specialized programming.

Membership Committee The Membership team is focused on engaging and retaining our current members, as well as identifying and inviting new prospective businesses to become a members of the

Alliance. This committee shares the benefits of the Alliance, welcomes new members, hosts membership appreciation events, assists with member ribbon cuttings and identifies potential new members.

Meeting Time: 1st Tuesday of the Month, 4:00 p.m.

Events Committee This committee is tasked with creating unique and special occasions that will provide opportunities for our members to connect and engage with one another. This fun and lively group is responsible for the monthly networking socials, and signature events. Committee members have the opportunity to volunteer at Alliance events and programs.

Meeting Time: 3rd Monday of the Month, 4:00 p.m.

Economic Development Committee This committee is focused on strengthening Alliance relationships with the local Economic Development Corporations, with SMR and with local business owners. This committee is a resource of community knowledge and connection for any Alliance member and new businesses looking to relocate to LWR. Meeting Time: 4th Tuesday of the Month, 4:00 p.m.

Governmental Affairs Committee The GAC committee is responsible for strengthening Alliance relationships with the all local, regional and state government officials. This committee stays at the forefront of all governmental issues that could impact our members or business community. Note: The GAC committee requires an application process to participate.

Meeting Time: 2nd Wednesday of the Month, 4:00 p.m.

Young Leaders Alliance (YLA) The purpose of this committee is to provide opportunities for young professionals to enhance their leadership, communications and project management skills by creating events and programs specifically for the YLA organization.

Meeting Time: 2nd Monday of the Month, 4:00 p.m.

Community Engagement Committee This committee works with member non-profits and other regional partners to bring the needs of our community to our members. Through initiatives such as our annual Alliance Gives Back Volunteer Days, the committee connects non-profits with the business community to strengthen our region.

Economic Development Road Show Do you want to learn about 50+ companies in the LWR region and make some great contacts with some regional leaders? Come on the bus for a day-long excursion featuring many new businesses and some long-term businesses that make our region strong!

East Meets West Regional Business Expo Businesses from around the Lakewood Ranch/Sarasota/Manatee area come together for our annual trade-show style event. Host a booth of your own to connect with new clients, or just walk the floor and see what new products and services our members are offering.

The Sandies Members’ Choice Awards The event that’s all about celebrating our dedicated members. Exemplary members are selected by their peers through an online nomination and voting process and honored at our annual Sandies Awards luncheon.

During the spring of 2020, as in-person events became limited, the Alliance began rolling out regular online programs to continue its mission of connecting, educating, and strengthening the business community. Lori: I’m a Business Solutions Consultant helping business owners and also individuals/families. I strive to be seen as their trusted advisor to share how, through our portfolio of services, I can provide peace of mind, protection & security while saving them time and money.

Bruce: My day consists of researching what is on the market, what has sold, who is buying and who is selling commercial real estate here LWR, Bradenton & Sarasota. Calling clients, potential clients looking at properties and scheduling meetings. Working through the transaction process to eventually have the property close and making sure that everyone is happy.

What do you like about doing business in LWR? Bruce: From a Commercial Real Estate position, LWR is a growing community with a well-devised plan. It’s the perfect place to be with many new businesses relocating to the area.

How has the LWRBA helped make connections?

Bruce: The LWRBA is all about connecting & community. The LWRBA helps to grow connections and encourages a positive working environment to build our businesses.

Do you live in Lakewood Ranch? If so, since when?

Lori: Yes, since February 2011. We love and live in LWR. If you could use one word to describe the LWR community, what would it be and why?

Lori: Family! The LWR community is close-knit and supportive of each other. We want to see every business thrive and grow here.

What is your favorite “fun thing to do” when you’re not working?

Bruce: Since I was a kid, I have loved classic cars. We own a 1961 Chrysler 300G, a 2008 Indy Pace Car Corvette that is signed and numbered by Emerson Fittipaldi and a 1989 Mercedes AMG which I have owned since 1994. It is so fun to drive some of these “time capsules!”

Lori: I love to bake and cook. It is a perfect way to relax. We have recently adopted a Whole Food Plant Based No Oil way of eating. It is so fun and delicious to discover new recipes. Best of all, I don’t have to give up on my favorite thing…desserts!

Entech is an IT managed service provider who helps companies in Southwest Florida simplify and secure their IT environment by providing easy access, security, and recovery of their important data. To do this, we provide technical support to users, provide regular backup and disaster recovery services, protect against cybersecurity threats, and give ideas and recommendations for future improvement on their technology.

What do you like about doing business in LWR? LWR is a newer area that is still actively growing and developing.

What does that mean? More business! So many companies are relocating to this area due to its growing population, so that’s a great thing for B2B companies.

Who is your ideal customer?

Our ideal client would be a company located on the Gulf Coast of Florida (specifically Manatee, Sarasota, Lee, and Collier counties), has 15-200 computer users, and is growth oriented.

It’s also important to us that they view outsourcing as a way to leverage their business.

Between overseeing our veterinary clinic and our Second Chance Adoption Center there has never been a typical day.

If you could use one word to describe the LWR community, what would it be and why?

Inclusive, everywhere you look you will see longtime residents, new residents and businesses all working together to make Lakewood Ranch the great community it is.

How has the LWRBA helped make connections?

LWRBA offers a never-ending schedule of networking opportunities and events that continuously provides opportunities for members to connect with other members.

I love Kayaking the intercoastal, fishing and enjoying the beaches.

What does a typical day look like for you?

One of the things I love most about my job is that I don’t have a “typical” day. Depending on the time of year, I could be marketing a promotion or our enewsletters, planning our next big signature event, working with nonprofits on sponsorships, posting on social media, attending an event (gala, fundraiser, luncheon, breakfast)…my days are rarely the same. My job has offered me the opportunity to interact with so many people in the community. It’s been such a terrific opportunity.

Do you live in Lakewood Ranch? If so, since when?

Yes! My husband and I moved to Lakewood Ranch in March 2017 from Connecticut. We recently built a new home in Lakehouse Cove in Waterside.

We closed on March 3rd and every morning we wake up and say, “What time is check out?” We are so excited to begin this new chapter!

What do you like about doing business in LWR? After living in Los Angeles, it’s so nice to belong to a smaller, tight-knit community. I often run into people I know, but I also constantly meet new people. I always tell my husband that I am fortunate to meet so many cool, interesting, and interested, people!

THOUGHTS FROM A NEW ALLIANCE MEMBER LORI FERGUSON VP of First Impressions Sarasota Italian Garage In September of 2018, my husband David Feinberg and I relocated to Sarasota from New England. It was a big move, for us and for our business, Sarasota Italian Garage (www.sarasotaitaliangarage. com), a purpose-built Ferrari service and storage business.

Aside from the obvious difference in climate (I’m still mourning the loss of fall foliage season), there were many other adjustments to be made—establishing a routine, making friends, finding new service providers, etc.—all of which can be stressful. And when you’re trying to get a business off the ground, it’s even more hectic.

We’re building a new, 9100-square foot facility in Lakewood Ranch, an area we believe is a perfect fit for our business. We see evidence of a strong, vibrant business community and want to be a part of it. We also know we need a point of entry, a way to connect with the community and begin to establish new ties, so we joined the Lakewood Ranch Business Alliance. And though we’ve only been members a short while, we feel that the Alliance has fast-tracked our integration into the community.

Through participation in sponsored webinars, presentations, and happy hours, we’ve already made new connections and gained a greater understanding of the many resources available to business owners in Lakewood Ranch (and beyond). And we look forward to more actively participating in the Alliance once we open our doors in mid-summer 2020.

The arts have always brought people together towards a common good. They elicit unique reactions from person to person, moving them to think profoundly, to feel deeper and to act with passion and expression. The arts are there to remind us of the dreams we chase, the memories we cherish and values that we uphold.

More than a launchpad of creative ideas and imagination, performing arts play an important part in what makes cohesive communities tick, seamlessly rising above language, class, religion, gender, and other factors that seem to divide the world. In fact, when you think of some of the most culturally diverse and renowned cities in the world, they all have at least one thing in common: art. Why should Lakewood Ranch be any different?

That’s why, as the landscape of our corner of the Suncoast changes, Lakewood Ranch is fortunate to be the new home of The Players Centre, one of the region’s longest-running and most celebrated performing arts organizations.

“There are many building blocks needed to assemble a great community, said Jeffery Kin, Managing Artistic Director of The Players Centre. “The Players Centre was one of those building blocks way back in 1929 for the little town of Sarasota. Now, we are expanding our mission and growing to accommodate a larger area by placing ourselves at the new heart of Sarasota: Fruitville Road and I-75.”

As The Players Centre for Performing Arts works to break ground on its new 4.5-acre campus in Waterside Place, here’s a quick look at the social, economic and educational impact community leaders anticipate for Lakewood Ranch. These prospective points are based on recent national studies by the Americans for the Arts.

Let’s Be Social.

Research shows that communities with a vibrant cultural scene are more desirable to live in, have greater economic stability, and attract a more diverse and educated workforce. On a more personal level, having a performing arts center gives people a place to gather for enrichment, often encouraging dialogue and bringing about neighborly feelings. What’s more, a hub of artistic expression helps increase community cohesion, leading to higher empathy and more community pride and unity.

An Americans for the Arts study has shown that 72 percent of Americans believe that the arts unify communities regardless of age, race, and ethnicity – up from 67 percent during the past two years. These quality-of-life and well-being benefits are not limited to the wealthy, educated or a particular racial or ethnic group, they cut across all demographics.

The social benefits don’t stop there. In the same study, 69 percent believe the arts “lift me up beyond everyday experiences,” 73 percent feel the arts give them “pure pleasure to experience and participate in,” and 81 percent say the arts are a “positive experience in a troubled world.” In today’s climate, that sounds like a must-have.

Money Matters.

Not only do they make us more social, but the arts generate money – and that brings opportunities. A 2015 study of 341 communities across the country by Americans for the Arts found that arts and cultural nonprofits generated $166 billion in economic activity. The arts supported 4.6 million jobs and generated $27.5 billion in revenue for federal, state and local governments.

For a more local perspective, spending by nonprofit arts and cultural organizations totaled $216 million in the Greater Sarasota/Bradenton Area during fiscal year 2015. Event-related spending by attendees here totaled $126.5 million, and that’s excluding the cost of admission. Cultural attractions are enjoyed by locals and visitors alike, as researchers estimate that 68.2 percent of the attendees were residents and 31.8 percent were nonresidents.

Further research into the role of the arts in economic development highlights five ways the arts work:

But when research points to their benefits for children and education, the spotlight of hope shines even brighter.

A strong arts education promotes the skills children need to be successful – and there is a growing body of studies that presents compelling evidence connecting student learning in the arts to a wide array of academic and social advantages. For example, exposure to art education promotes self-directed learning, improves attendance and sharpens critical and creative skills.

Additionally, research has shown that what students learn in the arts may help them to master other subjects, such as reading, math or social studies. The proof is in the numbers. In a well-documented national study using a federal database of over 25,000 middle and high school students, researchers from the University of California at Los Angeles found students engaged in arts learning programs have higher GPAs, standardized test scores, and lower drop-out rates.

The evidence is clear: study of the arts contributes to student achievement and success in school and beyond.

The Centre of Attention Putting the arts at the heart of a community enhances our lives, whether we’re enjoying a stage performance, live music, telling stories or learning in an arts-based program, we’re all connected. Part of this comes from its wide appeal. From seniors to children, there are ways for everyone to engage in and learn from art. That’s the vision for Lakewood Ranch with the addition of The Players Centre.

With a 480-seat main stage auditorium and balcony seating, a 125-seat black box theatre, a 100-seat cabaret theatre with dining, and the main campus of The Arnold Simonsen Players Studio – which is the education arm of the organization – The Players Centre will be a true hub for the arts in Lakewood Ranch, offering:

• Three new performance spaces with year-round programming of both non-professional and professional performers.

• Vital training for 500+ students in performing arts.
