/// WHEN? Sistemas Constructivos SINGULARES es una asignatura que se ubica en los últimos años de la carrera de Arquitectura: su vocación es organizar, resumir y aplicar los conocimientos técnicos adquiridos por los estudiantes en sus primeros años de estudio.

The subject UNIQUE Construction Systems is taught in the last years of Architecture undergraduate degree, and its goal is to organise, summarise and apply all the technical knowledge that the students have acquired in their first years of study.

Por este motivo, más que aportar nuevos conocimientos, se pretende que el alumno sea autosuficiente: debe ser capaz de buscar la información que precisa, seleccionar los sistemas y componentes para su proyecto en base a criterios técnicos, estéticos, funcionales, etc., y aplicar toda esta tecnología de forma coherente con la idea de proyecto de la que parte.

For this reason, the aim of this module is to form self-sufficient students rather than providing them new knowledge: students should be able to search for information, select systems and components for their project based on technical, aesthetic and functional criteria, and to coherently apply all this technology according to the initial idea.

Como se puede observar, el papel del alumno es fundamental en este esquema, mediante una participación activa en la que aprende mediante la práctica, mientras que el profesor queda relegado a un segundo plano, desempeñando un papel de guía y supervisión, a modo de consultor externo.

As we have seen, students have an essential role in this programme through an active participation in their educational practices, while the teacher remains in the background and acts as a guide and supervisor, as an outer advisor.

Una de las premisas fundamentales del curso es aproximar al alumno a la realidad cotidiana de un arquitecto como profesional liberal; por ello, el curso orbita en torno a un proyecto que el alumno deberá afrontar, resolver y definir como si de un caso real se tratara, a nivel de Proyecto de Ejecución. Este proyecto central del curso se denomina: TdC “trabajo de construcción” (corresponde con la E5): Pabellón para la Volvo Ocean Race

One of the basic premises of the subject is to bring students closer to the daily reality of an architect as a liberal professional; therefore, the module hinges on a project that each student shall face, solve and define as if it was a real assignment at an execution project level. This main project is called: TdC “trabajo de construcción” -construction project(corresponds with the E5): Volvo Ocean Race pavilion.

El planning de aprendizaje del cuatrimestre se subdivide en 4 fases consecutivas: Ph. 0, “fase 0”: análisis iniciales para adquirir conocimientos útiles: edificios similares (E1), el contenedor como materia prima (SV1), diversas composiciones modulares (E2), etc.

Ph. 1, “fase 1”: desarrollo inicial del proyecto, trabajando por separado las distintas facetas de un edificio según la clasificación por sistemas del CTE (P1, P2, P3, P4) Ph. 2, “fase 2”: correcciones grupales, de forma cooperativa, con el resto de alumnos y profesorado (CS1, CS2: control sessions) Ph. 3, “fase 3”: modificaciones para incidir de nuevo sobre las mismas facetas CTE y así poder mejorarlas de cara a la entrega final (Pm1, Pm2: project modifications)

The learning plan of the semester is divided in 4 consecutive phases: Ph. 0, “phase 0”: initial analysis to acquire useful knowledge: similar buildings (E1), the container as a raw material (SV1), different modular compositions (E2), etc.

Un antiguo profesor de la asignatura solía decir “de la nada, nada sale”. Era su forma de explicar que, antes de que el alumno se lance a proyectar con tecnologías constructivas novedosas y materiales innovadores, debe conocer perfectamente estas técnicas, sus peculiaridades y detalles, y el tipo de arquitecturas que producen.

A former teacher of the subject used to say “nothing comes from nothingness”, meaning that the student must master all the techniques, characteristics and details of the new construction technologies and innovative materials, and also the type of architecture they produce before starting to work with them.

Por este motivo, consideramos fundamental comenzar el curso con el análisis de otros edificios construidos con estas premisas, y que sean interesantes desde varios puntos de vista: - técnica (construccion y material) - proyectual (forma, espacio y concepto) - acondicionamiento (energías renovables)

For this reason, we think that it is essential to start the module by analysing other buildings constructed under these premises, and which can be interesting from different points of view: - technique (construction and material) - project (shape, space and concept) - fitting (renewable energies)

Una de las actividades más demandadas por los alumnos en años anteriores de la asignatura SCS han sido las visitas a obra. Conscientes de la importancia de las mismas para el desarrollo personal de los futuros arquitectos, hemos programado, en colaboración con la Volvo Ocean Race y con una industria local centrada en la prefabricación con contenedores, Hometainer, hasta tres visitas de obra a lo largo del cuatrimestre.

SV1: Anatomía de un container.

El objetivo es que el alumno conozca de primera mano la materia prima que va a utilizar en el TdC: el contenedor.

Para ello, se deberá desplazar a cualquier empresa que considere oportuno para acceder a los contenedores, medirlos, dibujarlos, analizar sus detalles, etc. (e incluso, fotografiarse con ellos).

Se entregará un resumen de dicha visita, que deberá contener como mínimo: + tipos de contenedores existentes + dimensiones estándar + detalles (dibujados a mano, y acotados) SV2: Desmontaje de la Volvo Race Village.

Cada grupo de trabajo tendrá asignado uno de los pabellones de la Race Village de Alicante. Se deberá realizar un seguimiento del desmontaje del mismo (y entregar un resumen gráfico y escrito), prestando especial atención a: + sistemas y materiales del pabellón + proceso de desmontaje + mano de obra y medios auxiliares SV3: visita a las instalaciones Hometainer.

Se entregará un resumen gráfico y escrito de los aspectos más interesantes de esta visita.

Construction visits have been one of the most demanded activities by students in previous years. Being aware of the importance for the personal development of future architects, we have programmed three visits throughout the semester in collaboration with the Volvo Ocean Race and Hometainer, a local industry specialised in producing containers.

SV1: Anatomy of a container.

The goal is for students to know the raw material first-hand that they will have to use in their TdC: the container.

In order to do so, they shall go to any convenient company and access the containers, measure them, draw them, analyse their details, etc. (even take pictures with them).

A summary of the visit shall be handed in, and it must contain at least: + the type of existing containers + standard dimensions + details (drawn by hand, and enclosed) SV2: Dismantling of the Volvo Race Village of Alicante.

Each working group will have one of its pavilions assigned. A follow-up work of its dismantling shall be done (and a graphic and written summary must be handed in), paying special attention to: + pavilion systems and materials + the dismantling process + workforce and assistant means SV3: Visit to the Hometainer facilities.

A graphic and written summary of the most interesting aspects of the visit must be handed in. |7

El contenedor maritimo ISO es básicamente una caja de metal con unas medidas estandarizadas que establecen su longitud, anchura, altura y capacidad.

The ISO maritime container is basically a metal box with standardised measurements that establish its length, width, height and capacity.

En el ejercicio de curso (TdC), vamos a utilizar el contenedor como un módulo básico, a partir del cual generaremos espacios arquitectónicos (modulados y funcionales).

We are going to use a container as a basic module in the exercise of the course (TdC), from which we will generate architectural spaces (both modulated and functional).

El objetivo de este ejercicio de las “5 composiciones” es el de romper la típica imagen preestablecida de monotonía que se obtiene cuando simplemente se apilan contenedores, y descubrir así el inmenso mundo de posibilidades compositivas que esta pieza básica nos ofrece; por ejemplo:

The goal of this “5 composition” exercise is to break the stereotypical image of monotony resulting from stacking containers up, and thus discover the great world of composition possibilities offered by this basic piece, for example:

1. manipulación de la pieza básica (cortes, adiciones, extensiones, …)

2. combinación con otros materiales (lonas, estructuras temporales, …)

3. agrupaciones no ordenadas (polares o radiales, espaciales, …)

4. escultóricas, paramétricas, anárquicas, …

El ejercicio consiste concretamente en crear 5 composiciones diferentes, utilizando como base uno o varios contenedores marítimos estandarizados ISO. El único requisito: que sean arquitectónicamente interesantes (proyectualmente atractivas, y constructivamente viables).

The exercise consists of creating 5 different compositions, using as a basis one or several ISO standardised maritime containers. There is only one requirement: they must be architecturally interesting (it has to be possible to build them and the project must be attractive).

/// VOLVO OCEAN RACE

La Volvo Ocean Race (VOR) es una regata de vela alrededor del mundo por etapas. La primera edición se disputó en 1973; desde entonces, se han celebrado 11 ediciones con una periodicidad variable entre tres y cuatro años.

Este año tendrá lugar la 12ª edición, que comenzará en Alicante el 4 de octubre de 2014 (In-Port Race), y está previsto que finalice el 27 de junio de 2015 en el puerto sueco de Gotemburgo.

La regata, que recorre una distancia total de 38.739 millas náuticas (71.745 km), consiste en 9 etapas oceánicas (Legs), y otras 9 regatas costeras (In-Port Race) en cada uno de los puertos a los que llega.

En esta nueva edición participarán un total de 7 equipos de diversos países, y por primera vez todos ellos dispondrán de un mismo modelo de barco (Volvo Ocean 65).

En cada uno de los 11 puertos a los que llega la VOR se instala el Race Village, una auténtica ciudad temporal nómada preparada para ser montada y desmontada en un breve plazo de tiempo, y que alberga pabellones privados de los equipos y otros abiertos al público en general.

Todos los pabellones que componen la Race Village que se instala en cada puerto están duplicados; en realidad, existen dos Race Villages simultáneas que realizan rutas diferentes, y se instalan de forma alterna en los puertos “impares” y “pares”.

The Volvo Ocean Race (VOR) is a sailing offshore race in legs around the world. The first edition was held in 1973, and since then, 11 other editions have been held every three or four years.

This year the 12th edition will start in Alicante on 4 October 2014 (In-Port Race), and the race is expected to finish on 27 June 2015 in the Swedish port of Gothenburg.

The race covers a total distance of 38,739 nautical miles (71,745 km), and consists of 9 oceanic legs, and another 9 in-port races held at every stopover port.

In this new edition, 7 teams from different countries will participate, and for the first time they will all sail with the same yacht model (Volvo Ocean 65).

The Race Village, installed at each of the 11 VOR stopover ports, is an authentic temporal nomad city, ready to be assembled and dismantled in a short period of time, and contains private pavilions for the teams as well as other constructions accessible to the public.

Alicante ha sido Puerto de Salida en las dos últimas ediciones de la vuelta al mundo a vela (2008-09 y 2011-12), y lo volverá a ser en esta nueva edición 2014-15.

Alicante has been the Starting Port for the last two editions of the race around the world (2008-09 and 2011-12), and the city will also host this new edition 2014-15.

Desde el año 2010, la VOR ha establecido su base de operaciones en Alicante: aquí se encuentra la Sede Central de la organización, y un Museo, que se inauguró en 2012.

Since 2010, the VOR has established its headquarters in Alicante, where the Central Venue of the organisation is, and also a Museum that was opened in 2012.

Con el objeto de potenciar esta imagen de “Alicante, puerto de salida de la Vuelta al Mundo a vela”, el Ayuntamiento de Alicante y la organización de la Volvo Ocean Race han unido fuerzas con la intención de crear un pabellón representativo itinerante que se integre en la Race Village que se instalará en cada uno de los 11 puertos que visitará la regata en 2014-15.

With the aim of promoting the image of Alicante as the “Starting port of the Volvo Ocean Race”, the city council of Alicante and the organisation of the Race have joined forces to create a representative and itinerant pavilion integrated in the Race Village that shall be installed at each of the 11 ports that the regatta will visit on 2014-15.

Dado este carácter nómada y temporal de la Race Village, cada grupo de trabajo deberá analizar cuidadosamente los distintos entornos para ofrecer una solución que pueda ser válida para todos ellos, y proponer así una situación concreta en cada una de las 11 ciudades que serán sede de la VOR.

The specific programme is the following: + welcoming the public and giving info + exhibition area (linked to the VOR Museum) + conference and screening hall (linked to the city of Alicante) + toilets and service area (following the regulations in force) + souvenirs and merchandising shops + any other proposals by students Regarding the temporal and nomad nature of the Race Village, each working group shall carefully analyse the different environments in order to offer a valid solution for all of them, and thus be able to propose a specific situation for each of the 11 cities that the VOR venues will be held at.

TECNOLOGY, SHAPE-MATERIAL RELATION

El contenedor marítimo nació como objeto estandarizado y normalizado, destinado a ser transportado. Es precisamente ese carácter modular e industrial el que lo hace idóneo para el ejercicio propuesto, por lo que se utilizará como exoesqueleto estructural. No obstante, queda a elección del alumno la imagen final del pabellón: los contenedores pueden quedar vistos, mostrando su origen industrial y su integración en las instalaciones portuarias, o bien ocultos tras otras capas materiales tecnológicamente más avanzadas y cuidadas. Precisamente esta decisión dará pie a un interesante debate sobre la “sinceridad constructiva”.

El carácter efímero y nómada de la Race Village sugiere el uso de sistemas constructivos que faciliten una rápida puesta en obra y permitan frecuentes ciclos montaje-desmontaje; por este motivo, se utilizará una tecnología basada en la pre-fabricación. Además, la esencia y contenido principal de la asignatura (sistemas constructivos singulares) invita a la investigación (seria y rigurosa) en la tecnología constructiva: empleo de nuevos sistemas y componentes, reciclaje de materiales extraídos de otros contextos, etc., pero siempre utilizados bajo el prisma de la industrialización, modulación y funcionalidad.

La cercanía al mar y su situación portuaria en el límite de la ciudad, expuesta a los constantes vientos laminares, condiciona fuertemente el tipo de materiales a utilizar. Por otra parte, la ubicación en diferentes puertos, donde el espacio libre suele ser escaso dada la gran densidad de instalaciones industriales, restringirá el acceso de maquinaria pesada para el montaje y desmontaje, y obligará a una cuidadosa selección de los sistemas constructivos y a un profundo y detallado estudio del proceso de construcción.

The maritime container was originally created as a standardised object, intended for transport. Precisely, its modular and industrial nature is perfect for the proposed exercise, so it will be used as structural exoskeleton. Nevertheless, the final image of the pavilion is up to the student: the containers can be visible, showing their industrial origin and integration in the port facilities, or be hidden behind other material layers, more technologically advanced and treated. This decision will give rise to an interesting debate on “construction honesty”.

The ephemeral and nomad nature of the Race Village suggests the use of construction systems that facilitate a fast installation and allow frequent assembly and dismantling; for this reason, a technology based on pre-fabrication will be used. Moreover, the main essence and content of the subject (unique construction systems) invites to research with exactitude on construction technology: the use of new systems and components, recycling materials extracted from other contexts, etc., but always used from an industrialisation, modulation and usefulness perspective.

The proximity to the sea and the port location at the boundary of the city, constantly exposed to the laminar winds, it strongly conditions the kind of materials that can be used. On the other hand, the location in different ports, where there is usually not much free space due to the density of the industrial facilities, will restrict the access of heavy machinery for the assembly and dismantling, and will compel to carefully select the construction systems and to conduct a detailed and in-depth study of the construction process.

Toda la documentación que se entregue en los bloques semanales [P1 a P4] será exclusivamente A LAPIZ. Se pretende con ello que el alumno piense con el lápiz, que tenga claros los materiales, medidas, dimensiones, soluciones constructivas, etc., antes de lanzarse a dibujar con el ordenador, ya que los distintos programas exigen un nivel de precisión que el alumno no posee en las fases iniciales de desarrollo de un proyecto.

All the materials, measurements, dimensions, construction solutions, etc. must be clearly outlined before starting to draw with a computer, as every computer programme requires a high level of accuracy that students have not yet acquired in the initial phases of project development.
