JAZMIN GARCIA NAMED 2018 DR. MARY HOOD TEXAS REGION SCHOLAR Jazmin Garcia, a student at Northeast Texas Com mun it y C o l l e g e student, has been named the 2018 Dr. Mary Hood Texas Region Scholar and will receive a $1,500 scholarship. Garcia is a first-generation college student majoring in biomedical science. She serves as the Vice President of Scholarship for the Alpha Mu Chi chapter and holds the Chair of Service officer position for her college’s Biochem Club. After being diagnosed with an autoimmune disorder in high school, she became interested in medical
research, which has inspired her to study immunology. The Dr. Mary Hood Texas Region Scholarship is presented to the Texas applicant with the highest score from Phi Theta Kappa’s Spring Scholarship Application, which helps new Phi Theta Kappa members defray educational expenses while enrolled in associate degree programs. Dr. Mary Hood served as Texas Regional Coordinator for 18 years and was a member of Phi Theta Kappa’s Board of Directors at the time of her death in 2011. The Dr. Mary Hood Texas Region Scholarship was established in her memory, providing scholarships to Phi Theta Kappa members in Texas.

Each student will receive a $1,000 scholarship for earning this national honor. For more on the 2018 Coca-cola Leaders of Promise see page 2. Phi Theta Kappa is the premier honor society recognizing the academic achievement of community college students to grow as scholars and leaders. LILLY HAACK WINS $5,000 PEARSON SCHOLARSHIP FOR HIGHER EDUCATION
Alpha Mu Chi members visited PTK Headquarters in Jackson, Miss, Oct. 26. The group spent the day touring the Center for Excellence, meeting headquarters staff, and learning more about PTK scholarships and programming. Members Hannah Dickson, Matthew Chambers, Chesney Davis and Jordan Whelchel participated in a live-streamed interview, and talked about their experiences in PTK.
Lilly Haack is one of ten students nationwide selected to receive the 2018 Pearson Scholarship for Higher Education, a $5,000 award. The Pearson Scholarship for Higher Education is awarded to Phi Theta Kappa members who are civically engaged in their community through service and who demonstrate leadership, academic rigor, and excellence. Preference is given to first-
generation college students. Nearly 800 applications were received. Each Pearson Scholar will receive $1,000 to complete an associate degree and $4,000 over two years to complete a bachelor’s degree. Scholars are also paired with a Pearson Mentor and will receive complimentary access to Pearson textbooks and online codes to support them as they complete their degrees
COCA-COLA LEADERS OF PROMISE
Members of Alpha Mu Chi, NTCC’s fivestar, award-winning chapter of Phi Theta Kappa International Honor Society, attended and participated in the Texas Regional Leadership Conference held at East Texas Baptist University Oct. 12-14. Chapter president Rhylie Anderson and chapter Vice-President of Communication Lilly Haack presented a workshop on “scholarship” with members from Tyler Junior College. At the conclusion of the event, the Walter B. Cooper Scholarships were given out to recognize “well-rounded” members who represented the four Hallmarks of Phi Theta Kappa: scholarship, leadership, service, and fellowship. Alpha Mu Chi member Jazmin Garcia received the top scholarship, valued at $750. Rhylie Anderson was also recognized as a five-star member.
Coca-Cola scholars are also encouraged to assume leadership roles by participating in society programs and are selected based on scholastic achievement, community service, and leadership potential. More than 1,200 applications were received. NTCC had more
Leaders of Promise than any other community college in the nation, except for Miami Dade College in Florida, which has 165,000 students on eight campuses. Considering the size of NTCC, no college had a greater portion of their students recognized for their potential as Leaders of Promise
ALPHA MU CHI ATTENDS TEXAS REGIONAL HONORS INSTITUTE Members of Alpha Mu Chi, attended and participated in the Texas Regional Honors Institute held at Dallas Baptist University July 27-29. A total of 279 members from throughout the Texas region gathered to hear thoughtprovoking speakers, discuss the ideas heard in small seminar group settings, attend educational forums, develop leadership skills, and network. Chapter President, Rhylie
Anderson, along with alumni member, and former Chapter President, Alicia Cantrell, presented a workshop on Service and Advocacy with members from Trinity Valley Community College. At the conclusion of the event, the Texas STAR Scholarships were given out. Chapter members Hannah Dickson and Rhylie Anderson received the top two Texas STAR Scholarships, each of which were valued at $1,000.
