National Case Study Challenge

The chapter officer team won an award for outstanding teamwork at the Texas Regional and the International level. This is the first team from Alpha Mu Chi to receive this honor.

For the past three years, a few key chapter leaders have received training directly from headquarters staff in a daylong session at the “Center for Excellence” in Jackson, Mississippi.

Alpha Mu Chi, earned national acclaim as one of four chapters to win the 2018 Honors Case Study Challenge competition for their entry, “Myth and Reality about Mental Health: Does it Matter?”

Chapter Wins Record Number of Awards Alpha Mu Chi set a chapter record at the Texas Regional Convention in Houston coming away with 30 awards. In addition to maintaining their five-star status as a chapter, Alpha Mu Chi was named a Texas Top Chapter.

Other awards include: Honors in Action Award of Merit, College Project Award of Merit, Honors in Action and College Project participation award, second place Yearbook, Texas Regional Hall of Honor for Outstanding Officers (Tyson Allen and Alicia Cantrell), Texas Regional Hall of Honor for Outstanding Members (Erick Gaytan Fernandez), District III Hall of Honor (Alicia Cantrell, Cassidy Watkins, Tyson Allen, Chesney Davis, Angela Garza, Nubia Sanchez, Kelly Brizuela, Gilbert Moore, Rhylie Anderson, Hannah Fouche), Five Star Competitive Edge Members, and Distinguished Chapter Officer Team.

PTK’s 2018 Catalyst Convention was an unforgettable experience.

The 100 year celebration of the International Honor Society changed my life.

From the general sessions with phenomenal famous guest speakers sharing their words of wisdom, to my chapter and I being recognized at the international level for our academic achievement and community involvement - this convention was one I will always remember.

One of the main reasons Catalyst will be so memorable is my experience running for Division II International Vice President. The experience of campaigning for office has taught me an abundance of lessons I will carry with me and utilize for the rest of my life.

While campaigning I learned a lot about myself as a person, including failure, how to better face it, and what I should do as far as future campaigns for public office.

Aside from learning about myself from campaigning, these past two years at NTCC have helped me further craft my future I would like to pursue pertaining to my career.

Alicia Cantrel was one of two finalist to give a speech for international office in front of over 5,000 people

International Scholar Laureate Program, Reyna Soto This summer, Reyna Soto joined outstanding college students and professionals from across the nation to take part in a unique academic and career-oriented development experience, in Sydney, Brisbane, and Cairns, Australia. The International Scholar Laureate Program is one of the Envision family of programs that enable students to explore their interests and experience learning beyond the classroom.

Chesney Davis wins District III VP Alpha Mu Chi successfully campaigned for the Texas Region District III Vice-President position at the regional convention earlier this spring. After the chapter won the position, elections were held within the chapter to determine which member would represent the chapter.

Brenda Godoy wins two top national PTK scholarships Brenda Godoy received two of the nation’s top scholarships recognizing outstanding academic achievement among college students. Godoy is one of 20 students to be named to the All‐USA Academic Team.

The All‐USA program is widely recognized as the most prestigious academic honor for students attending associate degreegranting institutions.

Godoy has also been named a 2018 New Century Transfer Pathway Scholar.

New Century Transfer Pathway Scholars are selected based on their academic accomplishments, leadership activities, and how well they extend their intellectual talents beyond the classroom.

Phi Theta Kappa is the premier honor society recognizing the academic achievement of community college students to grow as scholars and leaders. The Society is made up of more than 3.5 million members and nearly 1,300 chapters in nine nations.

ALUMNI SPOTLIGHT

Mary Tarte PTK provided me the opportunity to further my degree by allowing me to attend LeTourneau. As a nontraditional student who lacked basic computer skills I felt outdated and was intimidated.

Joining the beloved and successful Aplha Mu Chi chapter of Phi Theta Kappa changed all that.

Not only did I connect with fellow students who were truly hungry for knowledge but also those hungry for

It was so much more than just my knowledge base or educational level that grew, but my self-confidence and heart improved. Through PTK we were exposed to so many life changing experiences. There isn’t a day that goes by that by Phi Theta Kappa isn’t involved in my life.

The team building exercises that I learned through PTK have helped me build relationships and enhance my understanding along with meaningful

exchanges and in-depth intellectual conversations. It has lead to bonding in my personal life with my spouse, our family and extended in-law family.

Through Phi Theta Kappa I learned about my personality type (ETSJ) as well as recognizing others and understanding how their personality type affects their way of discovering and problem-solving. Being able to understand others has propelled my ability to structure and nurture valuable relationships in my professional life as well.

Drew Rogers I am currently an RN with a Bachelors of Science in Nursing. I recently graduated from LeTourneau University, Magna Cum Laude and have accepted a job at CHRISTUS Good Shepherd Medical Center in Longview, TX, in the Surgical ICU. PTK provided me with a leadership position, that lead

our chapter to be nationally recognized for our Honors In Action project. That position also allowed me to experience a small taste of what leadership is, and helped me strive to seek out more leadership opportunities in my future.

PTK helped me achieve my goals by providing me with mentorship, fellowship, and the encouragement to strive for excellence.

Lisa Lageschaar After graduating from Northeast Texas Community College in 2011 Lisa went on to pursue not only a bachelor's degree in agricultural education from Tarleton State University but she also obtained a master’s degree in secondary education from Stephen F. Austin State University. Lisa also plans to obtain a doctorate degree in the near future.

The education Lisa received at NTCC through both her classes and involvement with Phi Theta Kappa Alpha Mu Chi Chapter combined with the work ethic she learned growing up on her parents Pickton dairy farm propelled her on an amazing journey.

“The leadership skills, communication skills and life experiences I gained from Phi Theta Kappa enriched my life

and made me realize that anything is possible. I grew up in a small town on my parents dairy farm,” Lisa said, “I understood hard work, but I didn’t realize the opportunities that were available to me until I began my college education at Northeast Texas Community College. I felt empowered, prepared for anything, and like the world was at my fingertips thanks to my education and experiences at NTCC,” Lisa stated.

Lisa chose to become a high school agricultural science teacher; being a positive example is important to Lisa and this belief is what lead her to pursue her chosen profession as an educator.

Not only does she teach on the importance of agriculture as it relates to our future, but she also strives to instill values like humility, hard work,

and integrity.

Most recently, however, Lisa served in a different role. Lisa was crowned Miss Rodeo America 2017 (previously Miss Rodeo Texas 2016) and she traveled all over North America promoting rodeo, agriculture, and the western way of life.

Upon completion of her reign as Miss Rodeo America, she started her own business, A.R.I.S.E. Personal and Pageant Coaching, and is the pageant coordinator for the National Little Britches Rodeo Association.

Lisa also recently became engaged, and travels the country serving as a clinician at different rodeo queen and horsemanship clinics.

From the coast of Florida to the Rocky Mountains, one thing Lisa cherishes most is his her upbringing and the fact that she is an NTCC alumni.
