West Tower

The project is located in the Tianhe Area in Guangzhou, n the middle of the city’s central axis. It is a busy and commercially competitive area.

CITIC Plaza

The site is sandwiched by other shopping malls on the east and west, and the original land use for the site was park. Under such conditions, how to create a unique retail and appropriate urban strategies become the initial puzzle that we needed to solve. The above image is an aerial photo of the city’s central axis. In comparison to the adjacent malls, our strategy was to minimize the above ground area in order to maximize the green space. This approach is in contradiction to general retail principle where the above ground area should be maximize in order to gain enough presence and exposure from the street level. In response, we designed a free form monocoque structure above the retail podium, with integration of lighting design to increase its urban presence.

Step 1 The site was originally a park and the location is the central axis. Sandwiched between 2 other malls, how to create the competitive edge?

Step 2 The above ground area was minimized during the planning stage to allow space for green. The concept was to shop in the park.

L2 plan

Step 3 Allocate the majority of GFA in below ground.

B1 plan

Step 4 Since the basement area was developed to the maximum, the spatial quality was not the most comfortable for visitors. A sunken plaza was created to provide access to outside and improve the spatial quality.

Step 5 The above ground is short on GFA to create a retail presence, and a unique structure is introduced to achieve that.

B2 plan

As can been seen on the plans, the above ground area is quite minimal to allow more space for landscape design. The concept is shopping + park, and single spline circulation was created out of that. Almost the entire basement was developed, forming a loop circulation pattern mixing with passage to outdoor through the sunken plaza to improve the spatial quality.

Duling Kindergarten is a charity project. Led by Mingde Project from Hong Kong University and financed by PAN Foundation, their goal is to help the education environment in the rural areas and also an opportunity for the university students to participate. The project team is mainly consisted of engineers and in order to build better environment for the village students, PAN Foundation has invited me to join the team. The project works include the impairment works on the existing primary school building, new student toilet, and a new building for the kindergarten and teacher dormitory. My role in the project is mainly focused on the new kindergarten building. The site is at the existing Duling Primary School which is surrounded by mountains and farm lands. There are many left behind children in the local village, so the principle wishes to have a new building to take care of these children. The building also acts as a community center for the local villagers during time when there are no classes.

Step 1 Clean up the site and resolve the levels to connect with the slope. The building platform is raised on small steps are created to allow children to sit on when the class is outside in the central court.

Step 2 The building is consisted of three blocks to form a court in the middle while ground floor is continuous to allow the children to run freely.

Step 4 The roof of the blocks at different heights form continuous surface which guide the water during rainy days. The rainwater eventually gets collected and recycled to flush the toilet.

Step 5 The ground floor classrooms have bi-folding doors installed which can allow contact with outdoor space for the children. The upper levels of the facade is covered with tiles to act as sun shades and rain blocks.

Step 3 The teachers’ dorm on the upper levels, the classrooms can have more ceiling space. The rooms on the upper levels are divided by brick partitions along the outside of the blocks. The public spaces are on the inside which allow adults to maintain visual connection to the play area.

PROFESSIONAL WORK Mock up drawing- Option 2

The university students have started building the mock up after the two options are designed. The system relies on steel cables to suspend the tiles and small fittings to fix the tiles in the right locations The key point for the mock up is not only to visualize the design, the students were also required to make observations on the difficulty on installation, strength of structure, and to judge appropriate pitch based on the movement in open air. After the completion of the mock up, HK happened to encounter a super typhoon. After the typhoon left, the two mock ups are still standing still outdoor without damage. The team eventually picked option 1. Mock up photo and details- Option 1

The government built a series of infrastructures throughout the city to solve its issue with air pollution. These new structures form a network of smog fighting, working as mechanical ozone hovering above London in to reduce the pollution level of the city. These structures are referred to as the Techno Flowers by the locals because they look like mechanical plants. These mechanical plants, in terms of location and the task of cleaning the air replace the real plants. They also form a new city skyline and become the landmark of London. The proposal is a prosthetic approach to repair the respiratory system for the city of London.

1

Control Room 1 Office and monitoring area for staff. The Techno Flowers are normally controlled by a central computer system and sometimes the system requires to be overrode manually for emergency or checkups. It also serves as the lighthouse to prevent air planes from crashing in during night time.

2

Solar Energy Receiver 2 Located at the bottom of the control room. Receiving light rays reflected off the Solar reflective panels.

5 3

Solar Reflective Panels 3 Bouncing sun rays off the reflective panels to the receiver. The panels are self adjusted in order to track the location of the sun throughout the day.

4

Service Lift Shaft 4 The lift goes through the body of the structure from the ground level up to the control room. Maintenance Deck 5 When the petals are closed during night time, the decks form a loop around the reflective panels which allow the staff to have full access to the panels.

5

6

Protective Envelope 6 Providing shield to the reflective panels. The openings on the outside provides air circulation in order to direct air flow and reduce wind resistance. Air Scrubber 7 The stem of the flower is where the air scrubbing machine located. Its height varies from neighborhood to neighborhood, depending on the height of the adjacent buildings.

7

The Techno Flower is designed to respond to various weather conditions as a standing structure as well as to fight the smog. The structure is powered by a sun-catcher located at the top where sun-light is less likely to be blocked by the smog and the reflective panels are designed with a mechanism to re-adjust their angles in order to maximize the solar energy. The outer shield plays the role of keeping the structure balance under the atmospheric pressure, like the wings on an airplane.

Emphysema Terrain

The atmosphere of the city is full of filth and the filth gets attached to the surface of the structure easily. The reflective panels of the flowers need to be clean daily in order to maintain a high level of efficiency. The petals close after sunset and become a shelled space for the automatic maintenance system to operate.

ACADEMIC WORK

Emphysema Terrain

Apart from being the protective shield for the reflective panels, the flower petal also plays the role of maintaining the structure’s balance by adjusting itself to meet the aerodynamic flow, similar to how the wings of an air plane work. It creates an illusion that when looking at it from a distance, the petals are swaying like real plants.

end result in after effects The animation are rendered as separate layers in 3D Studio Max and imported into After Effects for composite. The particle layers are applied and color corrected with glow and level filters in After effects in order to match other footage. colony membrane The model represents the surface of the colony for the particles emitters to follow. Each colony is made individually with different combinations of modifier stack, in this particular model Bend, Push, Twist, Spherify, Wave, Skew modifiers are applied. The colony membrane is animated through the setting values in the modifiers, this allows the colony membrane to move in an organic way. Particle emitter 1 One particle emitter is used with Position Object in the event list. By checking the Lock on emitter, the particles will stay on the selected object and will follow it’s animation. This particle emitter represents the debris particles that are already part of the dirt colony. Particle emitter 2 This particle emitter creates the particles that are being drawn towards the colony. Find target is added onto the event list and by selecting the colony membrane as the target object, the particles will automatically flow towards the colony membrane from the emitter icon.

The dirt colony is created and rendered in 3D Studio Max, then imported into After Effects as separate layers for composite. First, a primitive object is created and modified with the use of stack modifiers in 3D Studio Max. Then two separate particle emitters are linked to the object, one is responsible for the particles on the object and the other is responsible for the particles drawn towards the object. By setting the animation this way, once the initial object is animated the particles will alter their behaviors accordingly.

The debris particles that were staying still in the air started to move. Some of them came together and move together as one.

This project is to use architecture as a device to critically analyse and examine our environment within its social and cultural context. As Russian critic Roman Jakobson defines literature as an organized violence committed on ordinary speech. An architectural intervention is proposed to sit within a specific context which is aimed to investigate the common social sickness and values that has cultivated through culture development. Instead of communicating passively to its users, the intervention turns up the volume in order to initiate a conversation with the occupants of the site. Thus, architecture could possibly achieve what films, photography, or literature can achieve, to stimulate people;s perceptions and to increase our awareness towards both social and physical environment.

Grid is chosen as the form generative device. In chemistry, one method of understanding a particular substance is to get a reaction by mixing with another substance. From the knowledge of the resulting substance, certain property of the primary substance can be detected or identified from the reading of the reaction. To generate the design, the Mercator grid crawls up to the site geometry which was created by another set of grid system(TD Centre), and the interaction between the existing and the secondary system create an different way to understand the space. In the design process, the Mercator grid has a philosophical implication of a universal view which reflects the nature of our society. By interacting the site with the Mercator grid, a unique pattern is created and the “readings of the space is extracted. Mercator grid in context of the Greater Toronto

Story of 3 conditions Condition 1 [EMPLOYEE]: It’s a typical Monday morning, Daniel is sitting by his desk, filled with frustration. Just came out of the meeting room from the regular Monday morning meeting that is never easy. Everyone can see the frustration from Daniel’s face, guess things didn’t go to well in the meeting room...

Condition 2 [MID-LEVEL SUPERVISOR]: It’s a typical Monday morning, “That idiot Daniel is late for the meeting again. When is he ever gonna learn? Boss is pressuring me to dismiss the department if we don’t boost up the sales for the month. Even though he’s tried a little harder this month, but I’m the one’s taking the blame!”

“ahhhhhhhhh!!!! I wish there is a place that can let someone like me to release this pent up rage.....!”

“Wait a minute...what is that noise out there? why are there people screaming??”

Condition 3 [CEO]:

It’s a typical Monday morning, “What a nice view towards downtown Toronto. I guess that’s one of the perks for being the CEO...this beautiful view can only be owned from top of an office building like this...” “I really tried to push some of the departments in last meeting...I didn’t pay them to come here and site around doing nothing...”

“What happened down there...let me see...” “What the...”
