This brochure recognizes faculty research achievements over the last two years. It features a curation of faculty contributions that have appeared in the top business journals as defined by the Financial Times, 50 publications considered the definitive list of excellence in business scholarship. THE EVOLUTION OF SCHOLARSHIP AT DANIELS 1990's – 2009 Daniels adopts the Boyer Model of Scholarship based on four platforms: Teaching; Application (e.g., practice); Integration; (e.g., interdisciplinary research, including case studies); and Discovery (basic research).

2009 To keep pace with growing teaching requirements and retiring faculty, the University created ten new lines for tenure-track professors with a focus on recruiting research-active professors. In hiring a new generation of younger educators, the need for systems that reward and support our changing faculty dynamic became apparent: While the Boyer model was attractive in principle, its implementation did not fuel a growing focus on research and discovery. It was time for a better way.

2012 The faculty passed a new philosophical statement of scholarship that replaced the Boyer model with a more conventional distribution of research, teaching and service. The primary focus on instruction became a balanced model with 40% emphasis on teaching, 40% on research and 20% on service.

TODAY Since passage of the new philosophical statement, the quality and volume of research has improved

tremendously. The College is supporting multiple types of data sources and research opportunities including large databases, summer support, research grants, and the creation of a behavioral research lab.

RESULTS Daniels is fully prepared and poised to meet the DU Impact 2025 commitment to recruiting and supporting

the best faculty and the body of knowledge they create through research. The increase in breadth and quality of research is impressive: Faculty from across our College’s departments have produced premier research publications in the last two years. Moving forward, the College will continue to invest in and celebrate a culture of quality scholarship.

DANIELS SCHOOL OF ACCOUNTANCY Ryan Casey, PhD, CPA | Assistant Professor BIOGRAPHY AT A GLANCE Ryan Casey, PhD, joined Daniels in 2014 from the University of Illinois at Chicago. His research interests include financial statement analysis and corporate sustainability reporting. Casey teaches “Topics and Cases in Financial Accounting” to Daniels graduate students. In fall 2016, Casey taught a new course that he developed, “International Accounting Issues in London and Paris,” the first course of its kind at the College.

Lorenzo Patelli, PhD | Associate Professor BIOGRAPHY AT A GLANCE Lorenzo Patelli, PhD, joined the Daniels College of Business in 2011 as an assistant professor. Prior to joining the School of Accountancy, he taught at Benedictine College and previously at Erasmus University Rotterdam in the Netherlands. He earned his PhD from UniversitĂ Bocconi in 2006. Patelli has served as editor of the Journal of International Business and as an ad-hoc reviewer for a number of journals, including Journal of Business Ethics, Management Accounting Research, Journal of Management and Governance, and European Accounting Review. He has received a number of academic honors, including several teaching excellence awards and the 2008 David Solomons Prize from Management Accounting Research.

BUSINESS ETHICS AND LEGAL STUDIES Robert Giacalone, PhD | Bill Daniels Endowed Chair in Business Ethics BIOGRAPHY AT A GLANCE Robert Giacalone, PhD, joined Daniels from Temple University, Fox School of Business and Management, where he was a professor of human resource management and formerly, the acting director of the Center for Ethics and Organizational Integrity. He is the former editor in chief of the Journal of Management, Spirituality and Religion and former editor of Ethics In Practice. He serves on the editorial boards of the Academy of Management Learning and Education, Journal of Management, Spirituality and Religion and Journal of Leadership and Organizational Studies. Giacalone has received numerous awards, grants and honors, including the Fox School of Business Dean’s Research Honor Roll, MERI Institute Fellowship and the GMAC Faculty Research Grant.

Tricia Olsen, PhD | Assistant Professor BIOGRAPHY AT A GLANCE Tricia Olsen, PhD, joined the Daniels College of Business in 2011 and is assistant professor and Marcus Faculty Fellow. Olsen studies and teaches about the political economy of development, with a focus on business ethics and micro finance in emerging and developing countries.

Olsen’s current research is on business and human rights, which involves the creation of a large-N database of historical trends of businesses’ human rights practices. She has presented findings from the Corporations & Human Rights database (chrdproject.com) to the United Nations Working Group on Business and Human Rights and at numerous academic venues. Olsen has received support from USAID, Fulbright-Hays, the Carnegie Corporation, the British Academy/Leverhulme, and the Latin American Public Opinion Project, among others. She has consulted for the Global Business Initiative, the United Nations, and the World Bank. She earned her PhD from the University of Wisconsin–Madison.

BUSINESS INFORMATION & ANALYTICS Young Jin Lee, PhD | Assistant Professor BIOGRAPHY AT A GLANCE Young Jin Lee, PhD, is an assistant professor in the department of business information & analytics. His research interests span economic and marketing aspects of online social media, mobile IT markets, piracy and digital rights management, and adoption and diffusion of IT innovations. His work has appeared in academic journals and conference proceedings including Management Science, Journal of Management Information Systems, International Conference of Information Systems, Workshop on Information Systems and Economics, and Conference on Information Systems and Technology. Lee gained professional experience as an information strategist for Samsung Group. He is the recipient of numerous honors, awards and grants and is a reviewer for several academic journals, including Management Science, Information Systems Research and Journal of Management Information Systems.

KNOEBEL SCHOOL OF HOSPITALITY MANAGEMENT Lijia “Karen� Xie, PhD | Assistant Professor BIOGRAPHY AT A GLANCE Karen Xie, PhD, is an assistant professor at the Fritz Knoebel School of Hospitality Management. Her research and teaching interests focus on the use of technology and data analytics to solve business problems. Her research projects examine business strategies enabled by technology using large-scale but granular data. She has published in premier journals of business and hospitality, including Journal of Management Information Systems, International Journal of Hospitality Management, International Journal of Contemporary Hospitality Management, and Cornell Hospitality Quarterly, among others.

She holds a PhD from Temple University Fox School of Business and Management, an MPhil from the Hong Kong Polytechnic University School of Hotel and Tourism Management, and a Bachelor of Management from Fudan University in Shanghai.

MANAGEMENT Donald Bergh, PhD | Louis D. Beaumont Endowed Chair in Business Administration BIOGRAPHY AT A GLANCE Donald Bergh, PhD, is the Louis D. Beaumont Chair of Business Administration and professor of management. His research on mergers and acquisitions, divestitures, leadership, and research methods has appeared in more than 25 articles in FT50 journals, including nine articles in the top-rated Strategic Management Journal (placing his record in the upper 1% of strategy scholars worldwide that have published in this premier journal) and 10 articles in a management journal that is ranked third worldwide in impact in business school journals (which makes him the journal's second most prolific author since its inception). In addition, he served as an associate editor of two FT50 journals, as a member of the editorial review boards of four FT50 journals and held elected leadership positions in his field’s professional societies. He has held tenured positions at Big Ten, Ivy-League and international universities, has lectured at leading business schools worldwide, and has won multiple research and teaching awards.

Currently, Bergh serves as the inaugural Chair of the Scientific Integrity and Rigor Task Force of an FT50 journal, the first of its kind in the management field. His current research examines the role of incomplete information in strategic decision making, governance and leadership of divested firms, and the ethics of research practices.

Prior to entering academia, Hamilton had a career in investment banking. Her research interests include organizational and field identity, image and reputation, as well as innovation and sustainability in organizations. She received her PhD in business administration from the Pennsylvania State University, her MBA from the Yale School of Management, and her AB from Harvard University.

MARKETING Daniel W. Baack, PhD | Assistant Dean and Full-time MBA Program Director | Associate Professor BIOGRAPHY AT A GLANCE Daniel W. Baack, PhD, is an expert in advertising, brand management and international marketing. He is a principal in the Brand Cartography Group, a strategic brand advisory firm. His academic research focuses on differences in how consumers process information affect promotional activities. This includes investigations of creativity and advertising effectiveness, of advertising’s impact on brand image and of culture’s influence on marketing activity. Much of this is international in scope, and Baack has investigated promotional tactics in China, India, Russia, Brazil, Taiwan, Australia, Turkey, the Ukraine, France and Germany, with an increasing amount of research focused on East Asia.

Baack has been published in 25 peer-review journal publications and has been awarded almost 20 research grants, including the prestigious American Academy of Advertising Research Grant. Beyond academic success, Baack is an active consultant and expert witness and has testified at the state and federal level regarding advertising ethics.

She holds a PhD in marketing from HEC Paris, France and MBA and bachelor’s degrees from the Zagreb School of Economics and Management, Croatia. Babic Rosario’s research centers on electronic word of mouth and online social interaction. She has published in the Journal of Marketing Research, a premier marketing journal, and presented at leading marketing conferences, including Association for Consumer Research, INFORMS Marketing Science, and European Marketing Academy Conference. Donald Bacon, PhD | Professor BIOGRAPHY AT A GLANCE Donald Bacon, PhD, is a professor of marketing and holds a PhD in marketing from the University of Michigan. Bacon applies psychometric theory and multivariate statistics to such problems as customer satisfaction and lifetime value, how students perform in groups, the assessment of written communication skills and how long students retain what they have learned. He also has extensive industry experience, actively consulting in the area of survey research methods. Bacon has worked as a financial analyst for Intel Corporation and as a product engineer for Steelcase, Inc.

REIMAN SCHOOL OF FINANCE Maclyn “Mac” Clouse, PhD | Professor BIOGRAPHY AT A GLANCE After receiving his PhD in finance from the University of Washington in 1978, Mac Clouse was named an assistant professor of finance at the University of Denver. Clouse was named an associate professor in 1982 and a professor in 1994. He was director of the University’s Small Business Administration Small Business Institute from 1990 to 1995 and chaired the Reiman School of Finance from 1999 to 2007.

He teaches “Fixed Income and Investments” in the Reiman School of Finance and researches the relationship between macroeconomic risks and expected returns on financial assets. His work has been published in Management Science and his dissertation earned the Shmuel Kandel Award for an Outstanding Student in Financial Economics.
