About Dr. Patti Dr. Charles H. Patti is internationally recognized for his research, teaching and practice of customer experience management.

Prior to his appointment as interim dean, he was the senior associate dean for faculty and academic research and served as the James M. Cox Professor of Customer Experience Management. Dr. Patti has experience in the academic and business worlds, both in the United States and internationally. He has served as marketing department chair at Daniels, school head in Australia, director of executive MBA programs, associate dean, acting dean, and chair of committees at university, college, school and department levels.

Dr. Daniel Connolly Senior Associate Dean, Academic Programs

Dr. Connolly is the senior associate dean and an associate professor for the Fritz Knoebel School of Hospitality Management. His portfolio of responsibilities includes oversight of undergraduate programs, master of science programs, the International MBA program, career services, and online and blended learning. Dr. Connolly joined the College in 2001 as an assistant professor with a joint appointment in the Fritz Knoebel School of Hospitality Management and the Department of Information Technology and Electronic Commerce. Previously, he held academic positions with Michigan State University, Virginia Polytechnic Institute and State University, Cornell University and Concord College (now Concord University).

Dr. Barbara Jackson Director, Franklin L. Burns School of Real Estate and Construction Management

Dr. Jackson joins Daniels from California Polytechnic State University, San Luis Obispo, where she was a professor in the College of Architecture and Environmental Design’s

Construction Management Department and director of the California Center for Construction Education. Dr. Jackson’s professional and academic experience spans real estate development, homebuilding, commercial construction, project management, and facilities management and operations. Dr. Jackson has received numerous awards, including the Service Recognition Award from the U.S. Department of State, Bureau of Overseas Building Operations and the Certificate of Appreciation for the South Pacific Division, Regional Business Center, U.S. Army Corps of Engineers.

Dr. Andrew Urbaczewski Chair, Department of Business Information and Analytics

Dr. Urbaczewski joins Daniels from the University of Michigan-Dearborn (UM-D) College of Business, where he was chair and associate professor of the Department of Management Studies. He is a visiting professor at the Aalto University School of Business. Dr. Urbaczewski has 21

Dr. Charles Patti Interim Dean

In June 2013, Dr. Charles Patti was appointed interim dean of the Daniels College of Business. Dr. Patti will help the College maintain its forward momentum and build on the successes achieved in the past five years of the Daniels Tomorrow strategic plan.

Dr. Patti previously served as senior associate dean for faculty and academic research and has held various positions at Daniels, including the James M. Cox Professor of Customer Experience Management and chair of the Department of Marketing. He has significant international academic experience as well, including serving as the head of the school of advertising, marketing and public relations at Queensland University of Technology in Brisbane, Australia, from 1997 to 2006.

Dr. Patti replaces Dr. Christine Riordan, who served as dean from 2008 to 2013 and joined the University of Kentucky as provost this fall. Since 2008 Daniels has achieved remarkable results, climbing the rankings, gaining international prominence and making impressive progress on its strategic goals.

“In the coming years, the Daniels College of Business will focus on carrying out the remaining initiatives set forth in our strategic plan and on delivering high-quality programs for our students, alumni and other College stakeholders,” says Dr. Patti. “We will keep everyone in the Daniels community up to date on our continued momentum and the milestones we reach along the way.”

Dr. Sharon Alvarez Walter Koch Chair of Entrepreneurship

Dr. Alvarez joins Daniels from The Ohio State University, Fisher College of Business, where she was an associate professor of management and entrepreneurship and academic director for the Center for Entrepreneurship.

In addition, she serves as associate editor of the Strategic Entrepreneurship Journal and chair of the Academy of Management entrepreneurship division. Dr. Alvarez won the Journal of Management Best Paper Award for her article, “How Do Entrepreneurs Organize Firms Under Conditions of Uncertainty?” and the Fisher College of Business Undergraduate Program

Teaching Award. She also has been awarded several Ewing Marion Kaufman Foundation grants and the Coca-Cola Foundation Research Grant.

Dr. Giacalone joins Daniels from Temple University, Fox School of Business, where he was a professor of human resource management and formerly, the acting director of the Center for Ethics and Organizational Integrity. He was the editor in chief of the Journal of Management, Spirituality & Religion and editor of Ethics In Practice. He serves on the editorial boards of the Academy of Management Learning & Education, Journal of Management, Spirituality & Religion and Journal of Leadership & Organizational Studies. Dr. Giacalone has received numerous awards, grants and honors, including the Fox School of Business Dean’s

Dr. Strauss joins Daniels from Saint Louis University (SLU), where he was a professor of economics and the director of the Simon Center for Regional Forecasting. His research focuses on new forecasting methods and applications, including forecasting housing prices, stock returns and employment growth. Dr. Strauss won the award for Best Research for a Full Professor at SLU’s John Cook School of Business. He was a Fulbright Scholar in the Ukraine and a threetime recipient of the Duke University Sloan Research Scholarship in International Economics.

Turn by Turn, Daniels Continues to Gain Momentum

A

s the Daniels College of Business begins a new academic year, we remain committed to the Daniels Tomorrow strategic plan and the steps we have laid out to help us achieve our vision: to be a premier private business college globally recognized as a leader whose educational experiences, outreach, and knowledge creation transform lives, organizations and communities.

Last year, we assessed our progress on the strategic plan and determined that we had completed the first turn of our flywheel—a term we borrow from the book Good to Great, which likens guiding a company through change to turning a massive, heavy flywheel. In the beginning, moving that wheel even slightly takes great effort, but turn by turn it gains speed and momentum.

Between now and the end of 2015, we are focused on completing the next six “big turns” of our flywheel. Here are those turns—and highlights of some of the milestones that we reached in 2012–2013:

Currently, Daniels holds the distinction of being Colorado’s highest ranked undergraduate business program, ranked No. 68 in the nation by Bloomberg Businessweek and No. 72 by U.S. News & World Report. We are listed in Bloomberg Businessweek’s top 50 for ethics (No. 4), business law (No. 11), accounting (No. 22) and finance (No. 39). Our work is not done, but we continue to make headway on this significant goal.

Globalize Daniels ∙ The Daniels Office of Globalization

is working hard to integrate and expand the international engagement of the College. The globalization team is focused on pursuing partnerships and relationships with universities around the world. Daniels has signed a memorandum of understanding for a graduate student exchange with Tongji University in Shanghai and a memo of collaboration with National Yunlin University of Science and Technology in Taiwan. We also are pursuing other relationships with universities in Japan, Brazil and elsewhere.

Improve our program offerings ∙ Last year Daniels

combined the Offices of Executive and Professional MBA Programs and Executive Education to better serve the needs of working professionals. We added for-credit and noncredit open enrollment classes and other exciting programs.

In addition, we began to conduct competitive research to assess and redesign several key Daniels degree programs, including the International MBA, MBA and Master of Accountancy.

Focus on the quality of the academic units ∙ In 2012–

2013, each department and school (as well as all other areas and programs, such as Executive Education and the Suitts Graduate and Alumni Career Center, for example) completed its own strategic plan. Those plans lay out each unit’s mission, strategic goals and achievements for the year.

In two units, the Franklin L. Burns School of Real Estate and Construction Management and the Department of Business Information and Analytics, we hired new leadership. Daniels also recently began making full use of new software to track faculty research and service activity to evaluate our faculty appropriately.

Create a recognizable national and international brand ∙ The Daniels Office of Communications and

Marketing (OCM) partnered with an agency this year to conduct a comprehensive positioning study. OCM will roll out the enhanced platform and promise to the Daniels community in the coming year. We also launched a new version of the daniels.du.edu website to appeal to prospective graduate students, our primary website users.

The new and improved website has dedicated microsites for each program, more videos to better showcase the College and much more.

Create a financial model for the College that supports excellence ∙ Last year, we created a detailed financial model that identified the College’s three primary sources of funding: tuition revenues, gifts and revenue-generating enterprise activities (including Executive Education programs and Knoebel School of Hospitality Management events). This model gives us a clearer understanding of the financial picture at Daniels and how we can best allocate our resources to achieve our strategic goals. To date, we have raised $90 million through our ASCEND Campaign. Approximately $10 million of that was raised in 2012–2013—nearly $2 million more than our $8 million goal. We are well on our way to reaching our $100 million goal by June 2014.

Who Haunts the Halls of Margery Reed?

S

ince it was built in 1929, Margery Reed Hall has been a jewel of the University of Denver campus and home to many different schools and programs. Most recently it has housed various programs and offices of the Daniels College of Business.

But who was the namesake of this historic beloved building? And does her ghost really haunt its halls?

To know Margery Reed, one must also know Mary Reed, Margery’s mother (for whom the Mary Reed Building, once the library, is named). Born in 1875, Mary Reed was an Ohioan who married a lawyer, mine owner and speculator who had amassed

great wealth due to his Wyoming oil and Cripple Creek, Colorado, gold investments.

Mary was a women’s rights activist and philanthropist in Denver as well as a generous donor to the University. Margery was the Reeds’ only daughter, born in 1894.

Margery graduated from DU with bachelor’s and master’s degrees. As a graduate student, she met Paul Mayo, who was a sergeant in the hospital corps, a teacher at DU and a journalist for the Rocky Mountain News/Denver Times. Margery and Mayo married in 1920.

Five years later, Margery was dead.

She was 30 years old.

Major renovations to Margery Reed Hall are underway, and the University plans to reopen it in spring 2014. The modernized building will enable us to provide Daniels students with an exceptional learning environment and experience. Margery Reed Hall will feature state-of-the-art classrooms to facilitate low facultystudent class-size ratios, much needed study rooms and lounges for students, conference rooms, office space for the Office of Undergraduate Business Programs, Academic Advising, faculty members and visiting scholars and more. In addition, we are restoring and updating the historic 180-seat theater that will be used for lectures and other gatherings.

You can leave a lasting legacy by “buying” a chair in the Margery Reed Theater. With a gift of $1,000 to the Margery Reed Building Fund, you can name your chair however you choose. cause was jungle illness resulting in malaria and dysentery.

Margery developed the disease while in Peru, where Mayo had been appointed an American consul. However, rumors persist that Margery was poisoned by her husband while the couple traveled together to the Amazon. The possible motive?

Margery came from wealth, and Mayo stood to inherit her money should she die.

Through the years, many have claimed that Margery Reed Hall is haunted by Margery’s ghost, who seeks vindication for her wrongful death. Performers have long reported whispering in the theater—the building was once home to DU’s theater department—and odd echoes during performances. Others also say that Mary Reed roams the halls of Mary Reed Hall. The eyes in her portrait, hanging in the building’s Renaissance Room, have allegedly followed passersby.

Whether the ghost stories are true or not, Margery Reed Hall is indeed an iconic place on the University of Denver campus and is known and loved by generations of students.

Today, the Daniels College of Business is renovating this cherished building to transform it into a 21st-century learning facility. But no amount of renovation will ever change Margery Reed Hall’s fascinating and rich history.

Daniels Department Information, Accolades, Accomplishments and Program Enhancements

DEPARTMENT OF MARKETING DU Lift Pitch Kicked Off in Winter 2013 In the Winter 2013 quarter, Dr. Peter Whalen of the Department of Marketing took his Entrepreneurship and Venture class to new heights—literally. Dr. Whalen created the DU Lift Pitch, which paired his students with some of Denver’s most experienced entrepreneurs on the ski lift of Arapahoe Basin Ski Area. For their course final, students were tasked with approaching the entrepreneurs, introducing themselves and delivering their pitch for a new business venture while ascending the mountain.

Daniels Launches Digital Marketing Online Certificate

Dr. Whalen says the ability to innovate is a key requirement in today’s business environment. The DU Lift Pitch is an inventive course that gets students out of the classroom and into the real world. “Entrepreneurship programs around the country teach students to create an elevator pitch—an engaging description of their new venture idea so concise that, in theory, it could be communicated in the time it takes to share an elevator ride,” he says. “In Colorado, we don’t find ourselves on long elevator rides with Fortune 500 CEOs like one might in Manhattan.

However, we do find ourselves riding ski lifts with Fortune 500 CEOs or other such kingmakers that are on vacation. Hence, the DU Lift Pitch was born.”

Students can apply credits earned in the digital marketing online certificate toward the MS in marketing or transfer them into any other AACSB-accredited graduate business program. The program started in fall 2013, beginning with MKTG 4805 Introduction to Digital Marketing.

Lee Ryder, principal of University Communities LLC, served as a judge for the DU Lift Pitch. “Overall, I loved the event,” he says. “The information shared in that kind of setting is powerful. I also think that it creates an out-of-the classroom pitch environment that is important for students to practice and master.” The student who pitched Ryder discussed her business plan for an after-school cooking school.

Whalen’s students agree that the DU Lift Pitch was a powerful learning experience.

“The best final of all time—comprehensive, challenging, engaging, and powerful,” says student Amos Denny. “I believe I successfully pitched my idea because each pitch led to a longer and more interesting conversation. The rides were unexpectedly short due to the engaging conversation.”

“The event connected our state’s future business creators with a crop of current experts,” says Dr. Whalen. “I’ve received great feedback from my students and the entrepreneurs who participated. I couldn’t be happier with the outcome.”

These courses combine traditional statistics, business computing, operations management and hands-on manipulation of data under the umbrella of analytics. The first two analytics courses are to be taken during a student’s first year at Daniels.

Now in his 48th year at Daniels, Dr. James Sorensen is an institution in and of himself—and is known for doing all things well. Dr. Sorensen has published more than a dozen books or book chapters and 100 articles in leading academic journals. He has held volunteer positions for organizations such as the American Institute of CPAs, the Institute of Management Accountants and the journal Decision Sciences (of which he is a former editor). At DU, he serves on countless committees, such as the College appointment, promotion and tenure committee. And he’s been a financial management consultant for dozens of corporate, government and nonprofit clients, including human services organizations in 49 states.

“In my view, the best teacher has one foot in the classroom and one in the practice,” he says. “The greatest compliment I can receive from students is that they felt over-prepared for the CPA exam and fully prepared for their career. My hope is that students come away from my classes with enhanced knowledge, skills and abilities.”

Dr. Vaneesha Boney Dutra, Associate Professor Reiman School of Finance When Dr. Vaneesha Boney Dutra came to Daniels in 2007, she sought a balance between her passions: teaching and research. She also is passionate about sharing current research with her students—and even getting them involved. In June 2013, Dr. Boney Dutra took a group of 20 Daniels students to Brazil—an emerging leader in the global financial marketplace—to learn about the use of derivatives in the equity and fixed income markets. In 2014, she will take students to London and Singapore for a similar experiential course.

“I believe being a strong teacher-scholar involves taking high-level research and translating it into something students can understand,” says Dr. Boney Dutra, who is researching volatility and price spillover effects between the Brazil and U.S. markets. “As the markets around the world become more connected, having exposure to the foreign markets makes our students more knowledgeable and sensitive to global issues. Students enjoy this type of hands-on learning, and I enjoy teaching such eager and curious minds.”

In his 38 years at Daniels, Dr. Ron Rizzuto has earned a reputation as a true scholar. He has conducted extensive research in oil and gas, energy, telecommunications, banking and the cable industry—and has consulted with organizations such as Time Warner Cable, First Data Corporation, Chevron and Liberty Global. He has served in various capacities at the College and in the business community, including his current post as senior fellow at the Cable Center, in which he researches how cable companies can improve their performance by enhancing the customer experience. And as a professor, he brings all of that knowledge and experience into the classroom, always striving for relevance and understanding. “I focus on making sure my students understand what I am teaching, no matter their learning style,” says Dr. Rizzuto. “And I care that they learn, so I try to bring quality, realworld material and examples into the classroom to make for a rich educational experience.”

Dr. Ron Throupe, Associate Professor Fr anklin L. Burns School of Real Estate and Construction Management Emerald Literati Network Award for Excellence, Journal of Property Investment & Finance (2013)

Throughout his career, Dr. Ron Throupe has moved between academia and private practice. Pre-Daniels, he was the director of operations of a real estate consulting firm, and before that, the director of the Runstad Center for Real Estate Studies at the University of Washington. He’s a highly respected valuation and litigation consultant and the managing partner of American Valuation Partners (AVP™), which he co-founded in 2009. At AVP, Dr. Throupe and his mentor, Dr. Mundy, PhD, were the principal real estate experts in the BP Gulf of Mexico oil spill. Dr. Throupe is an avid researcher, both applied and disciplinary, and recently published research on contaminated properties and trespass in the Journal of Property Investment & Finance. These days, he is researching the hot topic of hydraulic fracturing (“fracking”) as an oil exploration method and its potential surface and subsurface effects. “I focus on issues happening right now and bring those examples into my classes.” Dr. Throupe says. “Real estate is a constantly changing industry. A real-world approach is a must to give students the best education possible.”

Dr. Throupe is most proud of training his graduate assistants for careers and helping them build their resumes. In November 2013, research completed with his former graduate assistant, Xue Mao (MBA 2013)—now a junior associate at AVP—will be published in the Journal of Real Estate Literature (“A Review of Hydro ‘Fracking’ and its Potential Effects on Real Estate”).

Dr. Lorenzo Patelli, Assistant Professor School of Accountancy David Solomons Prize, Management Accounting Research (2008)

Dr. Lorenzo Patelli has worked at institutions on both ends of the spectrum—a small liberal arts college where teaching was the highest priority and a top research institution in Europe. At Daniels, he saw the opportunity to do both. Dr. Patelli’s research has focused on corporate governance and the impact that a company’s board of directors has on its performance. Currently, he is researching the tone of CEO shareholders’ letters and whether they accurately reflect companies’ financial performance as well as the association between companies’ “tone at the top” and aggressiveness of their financial reporting. He has presented his work at international conferences and had it published in the Journal of Business Ethics. “I love teaching and have a great passion for it,” Dr. Patelli says. “In class, I collect a lot of ideas about topics to research and then bring what I find back into the classroom. The great thing about DU is that we embrace that practice.”

Dr. Melissa Archpru Akaka, Assistant Professor Department of Marketing Outstanding Author Contribution Award, Emerald (2012)

During her PhD program at the University of Hawaii at Manoa, Dr. Melissa Archpru Akaka studied the co-creation of value in the context of surfing and its transformation from an ancient cultural practice to a global market. That study was guided by the innovative service-dominant logic, which asserts that service is the basis of all business exchange. In addition, Dr. Akaka’s work takes a dynamic view of the role that culture plays in value creation. Dr. Akaka works closely with Dr. Stephen Vargo, who introduced service-dominant logic in 2004.

Their latest research on value co-creation in a global market was published in the Journal of International Marketing. “The study of value co-creation is relatively new to the marketing profession and helps practitioners to rethink traditional marketing models in today’s global, digitally connected environment,” says Dr. Akaka, who joined Daniels in 2012. “My research allows me to bring alternative opinions into the classroom and encourages students and the business community to think about how value is collaboratively created for customers and society.”

With a unique background in information technology and hotel and restaurant management, Dr. Daniel Connolly has been researching the application of IT strategy and e-commerce in the hospitality industry before the digital era changed the way the world does business. He wrote the first industry book on the topic, Technology Strategies for the Hospitality Industry, which is now in its second edition. He publishes a range of articles and special interest studies.

Recently, he completed two major studies on customer engagement technologies in hospitality and another on embracing the big data phenomenon to become an intelligent organization. Dr. Connolly’s research has certainly made its mark—and he frequently shares his work with academic and business audiences around the world. “Twenty years ago, there was this fear that technology could detract from the ‘people part’ of the hospitality business,” says Dr. Connolly, who joined Daniels in 2001. “I felt that doing research on the topic could have an impact by helping the industry understand and apply technology and assisting academia in developing curriculum for a 21st-centurylearning environment.”

As a longtime member of the American Institute of Certified Public Accountants (AICPA), Dr. Sharon Lassar applied nine years ago to become a volunteer—a distinction awarded to just 2,500 of the organization’s 400,000 members.

Since 2004, Dr. Lassar has served on several AICPA committees and task forces, including the tax practice responsibilities committee and the minority initiatives committee. That work inspired her to create the Accounting Scholars Development Program, which invites outstanding minority community college students to the DU campus to explore accounting education and careers. Most recently, Dr. Lassar was appointed to the AICPA’s pre-certification education executive committee. She and 12 peers across the country assist the academic community by helping college accounting students gain the competencies needed to succeed in their careers. “Service is important to me because I play an influential role in accounting education,” says Dr. Lassar, who also is a board member for the Colorado Society of CPAs and the Association of Latino Professionals in Finance and Accounting. “It keeps me at the forefront of accounting trends, which helps me ensure our programs remain at the cutting edge of the profession.”

The vision of the Knoebel School is to “Be bold; do good; change lives.” According to Dr. David Corsun, service is one way he carries out that vision. Dr. Corsun grew up in Queens, New York, and thanks to parents who nurtured his “racial consciousness,” he became passionate

about inclusive excellence. Since 1992, Dr. Corsun has been deeply involved with the National Society of Minorities in Hospitality (NSMH), and he’s served on the national advisory board for a decade.

In his first year at Daniels (2007), he founded the Daniels chapter of NSMH. Dr. Corsun also started chapters at New York University, his alma mater, and two other universities. “To me, service is essential as an academic,” says Dr. Corsun, who also serves as co-chair of the Daniels Inclusive Excellence Committee and is active in the DU Center for Multicultural Excellence.

“Some of the most important work that we can do is to instill in students a worldview that embraces diversity and inclusion.”

NSMH is a student-run organization with 1,800 members on 60 college campuses. The organization’s national advisory board works with NSMH’s allstudent national board. For the first time in history, a Daniels student now serves on that board. “Through NSMH, I am determined to ensure that students who have the same talent, skills and goals as I get equal representation when searching for summer internships or careers for after graduation,” says Chris Allmann, a sophomore hospitality management student.

Dr. Vijaya Narapareddy, Associate Professor Department of Management Service Learning Scholar Award, University of Denver (2008) Outstanding Reviewer Award, Midwest Academy of Management (1999)

In 1997, Dr. Vijaya Narapareddy submitted a teaching case to the North American Case Research Association (NACRA), and it was awarded the McMaster Best Case Award. Ever since, Dr. Narapareddy has been active in NACRA, and she is now the organization’s president. For more than a decade, she has been an editorial review board member for Case Research Journal and Journal of STEM Education: Innovations and Research and she recently joined the Journal of Case Research and Inquiry in the same capacity. In addition, Dr. Narapareddy is a reviewer for countless professional associations.

“Case research allows me to integrate scholarship with service and offer useful research to students and practitioners,” says Dr. Narapareddy, who joined Daniels in 1992. She has developed many cases for her management classes at Daniels—delving into timely topics in global social entrepreneurship, corporate governance and international joint ventures.

“My service keeps me in tune to the marketplace, and my students love learning from unique materials.”

Throughout the first 16 years of his career, Dr. Don Bergh was a faculty member at three leading research universities, devoting most of his time to knowledge leadership and publishing widely in some of the world’s renowned management journals. Through that experience, he vowed that one day he would return the assistance that was given to him. In the late 1990s, Dr. Bergh joined the editorial review boards of several top academic journals, including Strategic Management Journal, Organization Science, Academy of Management Journal and Organizational Research Methods—and he served as associate editor for many years for the latter two. In addition, Dr. Bergh is the associate editor of Journal of Management Studies and a leader within the Strategic Management Society. “I view this profession as one of giving,” says Dr. Bergh. “As professors, the research and teaching that we do is supported by service. I take on these roles because our communities depend on it, and I want to share with others what was given to me.”

Pioneers Before Their Time

68 Years of Daniels Women Earning MBAs Recent national statistics reveal that more

women are earning graduate degrees and MBAs than ever before. While this might be considered a relatively new trend, the Daniels College of Business has always been ahead of the curve, which is why women taking classes or earning their MBAs at Daniels is nothing revolutionary.

Since the Daniels College of Business (originally called the School of Commerce, Accounts and Finance) was established in 1908, the College has been a leader in advancing women in business. Today with women making up 41 percent of the full-time MBA student population at Daniels, it is hard to imagine a time when women were not represented nationally in the boardroom or the classroom. During the first half of the 1900s, the sight of a woman in business school, or college at all, might have been a novelty at many universities and colleges. For Daniels, however, women have been part of the College’s DNA from the very start.

Always on the forefront of learning and innovation, Daniels is the eighth-oldest business college in the country and was one of the first business programs in the West. It is no surprise that the Daniels inaugural undergraduate class in 1908 included Emma Manns, who became Colorado’s first female Certified Public Accountant (CPA).

By 1929, women made up 30 percent of all Daniels registrants—significantly bucking national standards.

By 1947, two revolutionary Pioneer women became the first to earn their master’s of business administration from the College. Nellie Edith Camblin and Ida Eggland earned MBAs at Daniels a full 15 years before other business schools, such as Harvard University, even allowed women into their programs. These early women were the embodiment of true pioneer spirit.

Today, that early pioneer spirit continues to shine with our women MBA graduates. “There is nothing more important than a woman being confident in a decisionmaking role, and getting an MBA at a school like Daniels can give you that confidence to move forward in your career,” says Jill Bartholomew (MBA 2013), former president of Daniels Graduate Women in Business.

“I was lucky enough to participate on the executive board for the Daniels Graduate Women in Business, and the network that we built was key to my success, not only in looking for internships and jobs, but also in gaining insight into the business tools that are necessary to be a successful businesswoman. Participating in an MBA program can catapult anyone’s career, but as a woman, it gives you confidence.”

On the cusp of the University of Denver’s 150th commemoration, we look forward to the next chapter of Daniels pioneer women who will continue to break the glass ceiling while making history, one MBA at a time.

A few months before Mike Griffin was set to graduate from the University of Denver in 1952 with a BSBA in hospitality management, he got a lifechanging phone call from a family friend back home in Grand Rapids, Michigan. As the son of a private club manager and a respected member of the hospitality community, Griffin had two jobs waiting for him—an assistant manager position at the Greenridge Country Club and a director of services position at the Grand Rapids Civic Auditorium. He was faced with a tough decision.

“I was two credits shy of being able to graduate, so I had to decide if I should stay one more quarter or go home and take this job,” says Griffin, who grew up wanting to follow in his father’s footsteps in the club business.

At 22 years old, Griffin was eager for the opportunity presented to him and decided to leave Denver behind. “I felt as though I had graduated, but I never had a diploma. As time went on, that became a rather difficult thing to stomach.”

He got involved in the community, and in 1956, he was recruited to be the assistant airport manager of the Grand Rapids Airport. That was the beginning of a 10-year career in airport management in Michigan, Iowa and Ohio. He worked his way up to become a senior vice president of Airport Parking Company of America (APCOA). Then, from 1985 to 1996, he served as executive vice president of Republic Parking Company in Chattanooga, Tennessee.

Upon retirement, he started Griffin Associates, consulting in airport parking in Western and Eastern European airports.

Griffin had another passion and hobby: Dixieland jazz. Spawned from his teen years and time at Grand Rapids’ Civic Auditorium, he grew to love jazz music. Five years after he and his wife, Astrid, moved to Chattanooga, they started the Chattanooga Traditional Jazz Festival (formerly the Bessie Smith Traditional Jazz Festival, named for Chattanooga’s own “Empress of the Blues”), and ran it for 22 years. “Jazz is the culture that America has given to the world,” Griffin says. “Presenting that festival

enriched our lives.” As fate would have it, this experience would later become integral to Griffin’s DU graduation.

Despite his professional success, Griffin says that not having his degree bothered him all of his life.

“It never stood in my way, but it was work undone,” he says. “I spent so much time and effort to get so close.”

When a DU magazine arrived in his mailbox one day in early 2012, Griffin decided it was time to do something. He reached out to Mona Spitz, senior director of alumni relations and annual giving, and shared his story. Spitz referred Griffin

to David Corsun, director of the Fritz Knoebel School of Hospitality Management. After digging into the situation, Dr. Corsun came up with a proposal.

“He asked me to undertake an assignment: to write an in-depth paper about organizing and promoting a jazz festival,” Griffin says. “If I passed, I would receive my bachelor’s degree. That was all the incentive I needed.” He spent several months putting together a thesis detailing his lifelong interest in jazz and two decades of work on the Chattanooga festival and delivered the finished product in June 2012.

In July, he received the call: he earned a passing grade. More importantly, he earned his degree 60 years after he had left DU. As an official DU Pioneer at the age of 84, Griffin says he feels a tremendous sense of closure. His four years in Denver will forever hold a special place in his heart.

“What are we other than our beginnings?” Griffin says. “The University of Denver was extremely important to me as I started my adulthood. My education provided me a base on which to stand, and I was determined to do something with it.” •

Building DU’s Future

P

Pioneer pride runs deep in the Kaplan and Corkin families—and for many good reasons. The University of Denver Colorado Women’s College is the institution for which the late Herb Corkin served as a trustee in the 1960s.

DU is the place where George Kaplan (BA 1970) and his wife, Marjorie (Corkin) (Colorado Women’s College BA 1969), both attended and met soon thereafter. The couple has now been married 41 years. It is where Marjorie’s sister Janice (Colorado Women’s College BA 1970) got her start as a sculptor and a painter, and Cary (BSBA 1974), Marjorie’s and Janice’s cousin, transferred from Brown University to finish his business education.

Ever since George, Cary, Marjorie and Janice graduated from DU, they have supported their alma mater in any way they could. “We were brought up in families that believed in giving something back,” says Cary. The family’s foundation, the Robert Lloyd Corkin Charitable Foundation, named for Marjorie’s late brother, Bobby, was founded in the 1960s. It supports a number of organizations in the Boston area, where the family now lives, but it has been particularly generous in its gifts to DU’s Arts, Humanities and Social Sciences (AHSS), the Colorado Women’s College and the Daniels College of Business.

“The reason we’re passionate about giving to DU is that we feel the University gave us the foundation for our own personal growth,” says George, a Denver native who happened to graduate from Lincoln High School the same year as DU Chancellor Robert Coombe. After graduation, George and Marjorie moved to the Boston area, where George joined the Corkin family business, The Entwistle Company, which manufactures military support equipment, wire and cable machinery, hydraulic systems and more. Cary graduated a few years later and also returned to his hometown to begin his Entwistle career. “All four of us have become involved in making the decisions on where to put our foundation’s resources, and DU is a great cause. With four of us as alumni, it was really an easy decision.”

two scholarships for undergraduate Daniels and AHSS students. They also contributed to the Margery Reed Hall renovation project, a donation for which a room will be named (the Corkin Family Student Lounge). Years ago, the family made a major gift that made possible the building of the Robert Lloyd Corkin Theater at the Colorado Women’s College. And Cary is a Daniels Dean’s Society member and interviewed prospective DU students as an Ammi Hyde interviewer for many years.

“We are indebted to the Kaplan and Corkin families and their foundation for their vision and transformative gifts for undergraduate students,” says Dr. Daniel Connolly, senior associate dean. “Because of their amazing generosity, future generations of undergraduates will benefit in so many ways, including access to a DU education, richer experiences while at DU and wonderful, state-of-the-art facilities. They are stunning examples of paying it forward.”

For the Corkins, making the University of Denver a better institution is their way of giving thanks. “DU was important to me, and I received an excellent education there,” says Cary. “I try to stay connected, and when we are able to do something to help DU through our foundation, we want to do that. It is a great university that deserves our attention.” •

Alumnus Leads Wisconsin’s Angel Investment Network

D

Dan Blake (MBA 2011) came to the Daniels College of Business at the University of Denver to enhance his background in journalism and new media. For five years, Blake had been a reporter for the City News Service in Chicago, and later was a breaking news reporter and web producer for the Chicago Tribune, but found that he enjoyed the business side of launching new media initiatives.

The University of Denver has deep roots in the media industry—“Father of Cable Television” Bill Daniels is the namesake for the Daniels College of Business. Its connections to Chicago—DU’s founder, John Evans, also founded Northwestern University—were what first attracted Blake to DU. And when he started his MBA program in 2009, he was pleased by the program’s rigor, choosing to customize his MBA with an emphasis in accounting and finance.

When he graduated, Blake returned to his hometown of Madison, Wisconsin, to join a leading

electronic health records company as a project manager.

However, in March 2013, the opportunity arose to become the director of the Wisconsin Angel Network, and Blake couldn’t pass it up. “We represent angel and other early-stage investment groups and provide resources to those groups to bring more capital to the Wisconsin marketplace,” he says. “We work with startups, investors and policymakers on the best programs to drive growth across the state. So in many ways, it’s like being a reporter in that you hear many different stories and work with all kinds of different people every day.”

With his communications and media background gained from working with government and legislatures and an MBA from Daniels, Blake had the unique background that was just right for the job. “Everything I learned at DU combined with my communication background has served me well,” says Blake, who also grew up in the investment world with a father who is an angel investor.

Wisconsin is a trendsetter in angel investment group formation, and other capital initiative efforts are picking up steam in the Badger State. In July 2013, the state’s governor passed a bill to establish an investment capital program for Wisconsin startup companies.

The program is expected to bring at least $80 million to the startup ecosystem. “It’s exciting to be gaining traction,” Blake says.

The Wisconsin Angel Network works with a number of entrepreneurial college students and recent graduates who are seeking access to investors and mentors to help them get their ventures off the ground. “My hope is to stay connected with Daniels and DU graduates who are from the Midwest or are interested in coming here,” he says. “There are a lot of exciting things happening here in Wisconsin. I believe alumni connections make a university great, and I would love to develop strong ties with Daniels as they continue to develop their entrepreneurship programs and resources.”

A COH O RT TO REM EM BER When Chris Holmes (Professional MBA 2011) formed his private investment fund in September 2012, it took him about two seconds to come up with a company name.

“Cohort Capital was very appropriate because this company never would have happened without the connections I made in my Daniels Professional MBA cohort,” says Holmes.

“This all came about because at Daniels, I built a solid network of contacts. That network enabled me to do this.”

An Arizona native, Holmes came to Colorado to attend the Daniels College of Business in 2009. He’d always had a strong interest in the investment world and worked for an investment brokerage firm during graduate school, where he earned his Series 7 license and gained exposure to a range of companies at various stages in their capital-raising process.

“It got me thinking about how someone like me, an investor just starting out, could participate in early-stage and later-stage private investments,” says Holmes. “Denver is a hub of entrepreneurial activity, but one thing you hear often is that there is a lack of available capital for startups. I saw that as an opportunity.”

Holmes began talking with likeminded classmates in his PMBA program and teamed up with two friends, Scott Reina (PMBA 2011) and Brian Zimbelman (PMBA 2011) to get the ball rolling. In addition, Holmes recruited eight other PMBA alumni as well as several other investors to create the Cohort Capital fund.

To date, the company has made several angel-sized investments in early-stage companies, primarily in the technology sector, and has completed several later-stage structured corporate finance

transactions. Their portfolio includes companies such as ActiveJunky, an online outdoor gear store that offers shoppers cash back rewards, and Giving Assistant, an online platform for celebrity fundraising campaigns.

They’re locally focused, and have become a part of the community within Galvanize, Denver’s own innovation ecosystem. They also source deals through events such as Boulder-Denver New Tech Meetups and the annual Angel Capital Summit.

Cohort Capital is not a full-time endeavor just yet—Holmes also is a business operations consultant for medical practices around Denver, and partners, Reina and Zimbelman work at Lockheed Martin, but Holmes predicts enough growth to support a small team within the next five years.

“We’ve accomplished a lot within a relatively short amount of time,” Holmes says. “We’re in a lot of good deals and the fund has already seen its first successful exit. All of the right things are happening and I’m excited for the future.”

As for what he envisioned when he pursued his MBA at Daniels, Holmes admits the vision wasn’t crystal clear— but he couldn’t be happier with how things have turned out. “I went back for an MBA knowing I wanted a big opportunity,” he says. “I left Daniels with a tight-knit community of friends and people who I reached out to when I wanted to make this happen. I’m very happy with what I gained at Daniels.”

FROM CO RPO R ATE A M ERICA TO TH E BURGER BUSIN ESS Cameron Tune (MBA 1997, BSBA 1993) Leaves Behind Financial Services Career for a New Kind of Challenge: the Fast Casual Food Industry—and Fatherhood

During his 20-year career at the “Big Four” public accounting firm, Deloitte, and financial services giant TIAA-CREF, Cameron Tune built a strong résumé as an internal controls and risk management expert and talented leader of project teams. But when he and his wife, Alexie (Ruess) Tune (MAcc, BSAcc 1995), had twin boys in February 2012, he had a career epiphany of sorts.

“I had the realization that I would never be able to explain to my boys what I do for a living,” Tune says, adding that his new role of father took precedence. “I thought about what kind of dad I wanted to be, and I knew that the higher up I went, the more effort and commitment it would require. I want to be in a place where

I can be an active part of my kids’ lives as they grow up.”

Later that year, Tune left his job as director of individual and institutional operations at TIAA-CREF and started down the path of buying an existing business, but soon started looking at franchise opportunities. “With my operations background, I’m confident in my ability to run a business well, but coming up with the concept was my difficulty,” he says.

Some soul searching led him to the food industry—a fast-paced environment that suited his personality. Tune gravitated toward better burger, fast casual restaurants and decided on Big Smoke Burger, a small chain based in Toronto, Ontario.

Tune chose Big Smoke Burger, he says, because of the “superior tasting food” and the simplicity of the operation. The menu consists of burgers, French fries, milkshakes, one salad and a can’t-miss appetizer known as poutine—a Canadian mix of fries, gravy and cheese curds. Big Smoke Burger started in 2007 and is now expanding into the U.S. Tune’s Denver restaurant was the first U.S. location.

In July 2013, Big Smoke Burger opened its doors in Glendale, Colorado, and Tune will open four more restaurants throughout the Denver metropolitan area in the next five years. Knowing he lacked food industry experience, Tune hired a restaurant industry veteran as his general manager. “Beginning in my MBA program and throughout my career, I learned about teamwork, and that it’s not about what one person can accomplish alone,” Tune says.

After growing up in Texas and New Mexico, Tune came to the University of Denver seeking “a great university with a strong reputation in a variety of fields” and wound up earning a BSBA in finance. After graduation, Tune got his start at Invesco Funds and then returned to Daniels for an MBA before starting at Deloitte in 1997.

Life for Tune today is quite a contrast to what it was only a year ago—but he’s adjusting well. “I’ve been home with my boys during the day and at the restaurant at night, and it’s very different,” he says. “But it’s great. I know there is great opportunity to be successful with this concept in Denver, and I’m excited about building something that my kids can be a part of one day.”

Daniels Hires New Faculty Members

Daniels welcomed four new assistant professors to the College this fall. Meet the latest additions to the Daniels College of Business faculty:

Dr. Adam Greiner, Assistant Professor

Dr. Bruce Klaw, Assistant Professor

Dr. Young Jin Lee, Assistant Professor

Dr. Karen Xie, Assistant Professor

School of Accountancy Dr. Adam Greiner’s research examines managers’ discretionary choices relevant to standard setters, auditors and the capital markets. He worked at a regional public accounting firm as a senior auditor and in the corporate accounting and reporting division of Wachovia Corporation. Dr. Greiner is a licensed CPA in North Carolina and a member of the American Accounting Association, the American Institute for Certified Public Accountants, Beta Alpha Psi, Phi Kappa Phi and Beta Gamma Sigma.

He holds a PhD from Florida Atlantic University, a master of accountancy from the University of North Carolina at Charlotte and a BSBA in accounting from the University of North Carolina at Wilmington.

Department of Business Ethics and Legal Studies Dr. Bruce Klaw joined Daniels from the College of Law and Police Sciences at Keimyung University.

Previously, he was an associate for Debevoise & Plimpton LLP and Stoel Rives LLP, where he worked on Department of Justice and Securities and Exchange Commission enforcement matters, international dispute resolution and complex business litigation matters. Dr. Klaw’s research focuses on corporate and public corruption, enforcement of international criminal law, comparative criminal procedure, securities regulation, civil liberties and justice theory. He holds a JD from Harvard Law School, an LLM from Universiteit Leiden and a BA in philosophy, politics and law from the State University of New York at Binghamton.

Department of Business Information and Analytics Dr. Young Jin Lee joined Daniels from the University of Wisconsin, Green Bay. His research interests span economic and marketing aspects of online social media, mobile IT markets, piracy and digital rights management, and adoption and diffusion of IT innovations. His work has appeared in conference proceedings and academic journals, including Journal of Management Information Systems, International Conference of Information Systems, and Workshop on Information Systems and Economics. Dr. Lee gained professional experience as an information strategist for the Samsung Group. He holds a PhD in information systems from the University of Washington, an MS from Carnegie Mellon University, a BSBA from The Ohio State University and a BA from Chung-Ang University.

Fritz Knoebel School of Hospitality Management Dr. Karen Xie’s research interests include hospitality marketing, business information and analytics, and revenue management.

She gained experience at Accenture Management Consulting in information analytics and at Unilever as a brand development assistant. Her work has appeared in journals such as International Journal of Hospitality Management, International Journal of Contemporary Hospitality Management and Journal of Travel & Tourism Marketing.

Dr. Xie serves as a referee for five research journals in hospitality and tourism. She holds a PhD from Temple University, Fox School of Business and Management, a master of philosophy from the Hong Kong Polytechnic University School of Tourism Management and a bachelor of management from Fudan University in Shanghai.

2013 BETA GAMMA SIGMA INDUCTEES Membership to Beta Gamma Sigma is the highest recognition any undergraduate or graduate business student can receive from an AACSB International accredited school. Each spring and summer, Beta Gamma Sigma welcomes new inductees who receive lifetime membership and benefits that include access to career boards and the honor society’s large alumni network—some 650,000 alumni throughout the United States and in more than 160 countries around the world who hold positions in forprofit and nonprofit organizations.
