Dear Daniels Community, This past summer, we concluded our year-long strategic planning initiative, Daniels Tomorrow. Throughout this process, we invited hundreds of Daniels stakeholders to contribute their expertise and perspectives so that we could identify the College’s areas of distinction as well as opportunities to build upon our strengths.

As we move forward to solidify our reputation as one of the premier colleges of business in the world, it is imperative that the Daniels College of Business continues to foster a culture of engagement. Our students, faculty, staff, alumni and corporate partners each play an important role in the Daniels community, and we are committed to developing ours into a community of choice, where people connect, engage and exchange ideas.

We are excited to share in this issue of Daniels Business Review some of the wonderful new programs and initiatives underway at the College. Recently, we appointed a brand new alumni advisory board, whom you will meet here.

Daniels partnered with the Morgridge College of Education and GetSmartSchools to offer a groundbreaking new MBA concentration in school leadership, one of the first such graduate degrees in the world. Under the direction of the new Executive Director Dr. Karen Dowd, the Suitts Center for Graduate Career Services underwent a complete transformation to deepen corporate partnerships and become a leading career services center for Daniels graduate students.

Creating an engaged and collaborative Daniels community is key to fulfilling our vision of transforming lives, communities and organizations. I look forward to strengthening our existing partnerships and creating new ones, and I welcome you to join me in this effort.

Making Micro Macro

One Daniels Student’s Worldwide Quest

When Julie Markham set foot on the University of Denver campus in the fall of 2005, she had lofty aspirations. As the Boettcher scholar enters her fifth and final year at Daniels—earning a bachelor’s in real estate and finance (with a minor in leadership studies) and a dual MBA and master’s in real estate and construction management—not only has she traveled well and learned “more than I ever dreamed I could in college,” she has amassed a wealth of valuable research on microfinance after spending her summer at Grameen Bank in Bangladesh.

In her four years at the Daniels College of Business, first-year graduate student Julie Markham has traveled the globe not just for the fun of it, but to learn how she can make a difference when she graduates.

Perhaps Markham caught the travel bug while studying at American University in Rome, Italy, during the Fall 2007 quarter, or while teaching English in Luoyang, China, the summer of 2007. It wasn’t until she read an article in Forbes magazine, however, that Markham became interested in microfinance, the broad term for providing financial services to the world’s poor.

“I didn’t know anything about microfinance until then, but that article really intrigued me—the social impact you can have through such a model,” says Markham.

“I’ve always been interested in doing good for the world.

I think a lot of business students want to make a lot of money, but I guess I’ve always wondered why you can’t do good and make money at the same time.”

On July 11, 2009, Markham departed for Bangladesh for a five-week internship at Grameen Bank (for which she received a $3,500 grant from the Undergraduate Research Center). Her timing couldn’t have been better. Markham arrived just in time for Grameen’s biannual 56th International Dialogue on Microfinance. She attended sessions with Grameen founder Dr. Mohammed Yunus and other bank executives. Then, on August 12, President Barack Obama awarded Dr. Yunus the United States’ highest civilian honor, the Presidential Medal of Freedom, for pioneering the use of micro-loans to provide credit to poor individuals. At the bank’s celebration on August 16, Markham was asked to deliver a speech of congratulations.

“It was an incredible honor,” says Markham. “I was one of the only Americans there, so they asked me to congratulate him on behalf of our country. I felt really lucky to be a part of it.” In 2006, Dr. Yunus and

I’ve always been interested in doing good for the world. I think a lot of business students want to make a lot of money, but I guess I’ve always wondered why you can’t do good and make money at the same time.

Immediately, Markham started doing her homework on microfinance—and she didn’t confine herself to the classroom. In the spring of 2008, Markham went to Cambodia with the Daniels’ Global Opportunities program to meet with clients of the microfinance institution, Angkor Mikroheranhvatho Kampuchea, Co. The program is part of the Daniels-Deutsche Bank partnership with Daniels students helping the Deutsche Bank Global Commercial Microfinance Consortium perform due diligence on loan requests from microfinance institutions in developing countries.

Over Christmas break 2008–09, Markham spent four weeks in India working for Project Dharamsala, a DU International Service Learning program. She stayed an additional two weeks to visit and research one of the largest microfinance institutions in the world, Bandhan.

After that trip, Markham felt that she needed more than just another exposure visit to learn more. She decided to go to the source: Grameen Bank, the community development bank based in Bangladesh, considered the model for distributing small loans to poor people through group-based credit. Since its founding in 1976, Grameen has disbursed more than $7.5 billion, with the average loan size around $100.

Grameen Bank were also the co-recipients of the Nobel Peace Price.

Today, Markham is completing her final year at Daniels and her senior thesis, “Microfinance and its Effective Implementation in Southeast Asia.” As she contemplates her future, she is grateful for the “incredible experiences” she’s been fortunate to have at Daniels.

“Daniels offers hands-on, experiential learning—locally and globally—and I think that makes the College very unique,” says Markham, who is currently applying to the Fulbright Scholar Program (to research social entrepreneurship as a means of economic development in Tanzania). “DU and Daniels have been instrumental in shaping who I am. I’ve been afforded so many opportunities here, and I just feel so fortunate to be at a school that encourages this kind of exploration and growth. I’ve had a lot of fun.” •

Capturing Capitalism on Film Alumnus Uses Wall Street Smarts to Collaborate on a Capitalism Documentary | New York Cit y

To those who knew him during his years at the Daniels College of Business, it’s probably no surprise that Ryan Greenawalt (BSBA, 2001) ended up working in finance. “At Daniels, I really fell in love with capitalism, free markets and business,” says Greenawalt. “It didn’t take very long for me to decide that was

where I wanted to focus my efforts at school.”

Greenawalt is the senior vice president of fixed income sales at Jefferies & Company in New York, and admits that one of the most important aspects of his Daniels education was not only the caliber of educators and the small, rigorous classes, but the Walk Down Wall Street class in which he participated in December 2001. “I remember meeting successful Daniels alumni in New York who shared their experiences with us,” recalls Greenawalt. “It made me believe that if I worked hard at Daniels, that could be me. I’m very happy now to return the favor.” Since joining Jefferies in the spring of 2005, Greenawalt’s firm has hosted Dr. Mac Clouse’s student group four times.

These days, Greenawalt has another Daniels project on his

plate—one that will require a whole different skill set. He’s the executive producer of a to-benamed documentary about one of his favorite topics: capitalism. And he’s teaming up with Daniels Dean Christine Riordan, who suggested the idea when she and Dr. Karen Dowd, executive director of the Suitts Center for Graduate Career Services, visited New York for an alumni event Greenawalt put together in April 2009. “We were having a discussion about what I’m passionate about, and I mentioned that I’ve always thought about filmmaking and was in talks with some NYU students about doing a documentary about capitalism,” says Greenawalt. “Chris said, ‘Why don’t you do it with Daniels?’”

Greenawalt has committed to fund a majority of the documentary

project—a joint effort with DU’s divisions of Arts, Humanities and Social Sciences film studies students.

He hopes to create a compelling and entertaining film about the healthy side of capitalism. “We’ve all seen and heard about capitalism failing, but I’d like to show what’s good about it,” says Greenawalt.

“At the same time, we’ll promote the University of Denver and all its interdisciplinary units. Daniels is an excellent business college that promotes ethics and leadership, which is so important. DU also has an amazing school of music that may do the score for the film. There are many talented people at DU, and our plan is to do this entire documentary utilizing DU students and alumni.”

Greenawalt says that his goal is to compile the film team before the end of the Spring 2010 quarter, and have

a DU-produced film ready to market by the end of 2010.

Whether he ends up being the next great documentary filmmaker or continues his successful career on Wall Street, Greenawalt says he has Daniels to thank for giving him the tools to succeed. “I felt Daniels was a very entrepreneurial environment, which is exactly the kind of environment I work in today and the kind of person I am,” he says.

“I was encouraged to be creative, and I am so appreciative of that. I’m really happy to stay involved with the College and the University.” •

First Professional MBA Class Hand Delivers Funds to Costa Rican School On August 13, 2009, the first and second Daniels PMBA cohorts raised nearly

$1,000 for La Escuela Dominical de Osa in Dominical, Costa Rica. Led by Dennis Cooke, Dr. George Simon and Dr. Pallab Paul, 17 students from Cohort 1 departed on their international journey in September to deliver the funds and five computers to their adopted school. While in Costa Rica, the graduate students also worked with the owner of Hacienda Baru National Wildlife Refuge to help him improve his business. Three People from Different Backgrounds Join Forces and Hearts to Give Sudanese Orphans a Better Life

When Dr. Peter Firmin became the dean of the Graduate School of Business Administration at Tulane University in 1968, he learned very quickly that his role was not limited to administrative leadership. “Deans of business schools are fundraisers,” says Dr. Firmin, who was the dean at the University of Denver’s College of Business Administration from 1974 to 1979 (and professor in the School of Accountancy from 1979 to 1984). Perhaps that is why 11 years after his first retirement 1984 from the College, Dr. Firmin was happy to accept a one-year post as interim director of the School of Accountancy in 1995, a role in which one of his primary responsibilities was to fundraise. Then, just days after retiring for the second

time in 1996, Dr. Ron Kucic, director of the School of Accountancy, asked Dr. Firmin back to be the school’s director of development—a position created just for him.

He accepted. Dr. Firmin retired yet again in 2006, but came back part time in 2008, at the age of 83.

In 2006, Dr. Firmin put his fundraising skills to use elsewhere, becoming involved with the Sudanese American Orphaned Rehabilitation Organization (SAORO). In 2001, the United Nations High Commission for Refugees, the U.S. State Department and other humanitarian groups began bringing the “Lost Boys of Sudan” to the United States—young men who had been orphaned in the late 1980s during the

Sudanese civil war. Forty Lost Boys came to Denver, and through their church, Peter and Jean Firmin helped the young men acclimate. Soon, they met James Manyror, who was 9 years old when Sudanese militants murdered his father in 1987 (his mother died a year later). In 2005, Manyror returned to his home village of Pariang in southern Sudan for the first time and immediately made

plans to build an orphanage and school there.

Jean Firmin was moved by his story, and Dr. Firmin became involved. “James has passion and charisma, and he is a sincere and dedicated person,” Dr. Firmin says.

“But more than that, in talking to him, my wife and I became convinced that this is important.”

Today, the Gumriak Orphanage and Community School (which opened in July 2008) serves 105 students, 16 of whom were extremely vulnerable orphans before the orphanage was built. Dr. Firmin is SAORO’s chief fundraiser and chief financial officer. And while he is pleased with what SAORO has accomplished thus far, his work is far from finished. “We have funds that will carry us through next spring,” Dr. Firmin says. “But there are an estimated 2,000 young children in the village not receiving any education. The pressure to take more students and build more schools is insurmountable.”

And so, Dr. Firmin will continue to do what he does best: raise money.

Over the course of his time as director of development for the School of Accountancy, Dr. Firmin increased

annual alumni contributions from $175,000 to nearly $1 million. At SAORO, he has raised $115,000 in three years—from a small but loyal base of 175 people and organizations.

When alumna Jan Weiss (BSBA, 1979; MBA, 1980) learned about SAORO through Dr. Firmin, fellow board member with the School of Accountancy, she too was inspired. “At first I contributed financially, but I realized that there was so much to be done,” says Weiss.

“These are children who have nothing and no one. That has to change.”

In May 2010, Dr. Firmin hopes to visit Gumriak for the first time.

He will be 86 years old. As Weiss says, “the man is tireless. I admire his dedication. He’s a father of eight children and I believe this is personal to him. But it’s not just SAORO… he cares about many, many causes.”

For Dr. Firmin, that devotion stems from a love of people. “Working with an organization like this, you can see the results of what you are doing,” he says. “You can see that there are 105 children whose lives you’ve made better, 16 of whom have lived a life of not knowing where their next meal would come from, or where they would sleep that night, and you’re giving them an education, food and a home—things they never dreamed of getting. That’s what motivates me. We can’t stop here. We have to keep going and grow.” •

Turning an

MBA into an

NGO | Denver

Most graduate students don’t retire from their careers in the middle of their MBA programs, but to Daniels alumna Leslie Howard (MBA, 2003), getting a solid business education was crucial preparation for her next move after the business world: starting a scholarship foundation.

In late 2000, after nine years with STARZ Entertainment Group, Leslie Howard started thinking about pursuing an MBA. For her, the Daniels College of Business was the obvious choice. “Being in the cable industry, there was this awareness of Bill Daniels, and our CEO was a big supporter of the University,” says Howard. “Once I looked into the Daniels Executive MBA (EMBA) program, I was amazed by the curriculum and the emphasis on business ethics. I knew it was just what I was looking for, and in the end, it really exceeded my expectations.”

The year 2001 was full of major life changes for Howard. In March, she started her EMBA program.

In May, she had twin girls. And in August, she retired from STARZ, which grew during her tenure from a 30-person startup to a worldwide media company with more than 500

employees. Howard’s area alone was a $300 million business unit—the fastest growing and most profitable division at STARZ. At the same time, Howard and her husband, also a successful cable industry veteran who retired from Liberty Media in 2003, decided to focus their talents on philanthropy.

In December 2001, the couple established the Gary and Leslie Howard Family Foundation to provide scholarships to students of financial need at University of Denver and Colorado State University, where Howard’s husband earned his bachelor’s degree. “We both feel strongly that the greatest way to help young people is to give them educational opportunities,” says Howard. “Not everyone is as fortunate as we were, and we wanted to help the students who might not be able to go to college without some financial assistance.”

To date, the Howard Family Foundation has given nearly $1 million in scholarships to about 75 DU and CSU students, some of whom have received support all four years of their undergraduate education and two years of graduate school. In 2007, the Howards also started the Miracles on Ice Hockey Camp, a week-long summer camp that hosts 30 kids from Denver’s public housing neighborhoods at DU’s Joy Burns Ice Arena.

The program has an educational component as well: math and reading classes and several teambuilding and motivational speaking sessions. The Foundation partners with the DU Division of Athletics and Recreation and the DU Bridge Project, of which Howard is a board member, and has sponsors such as STARZ, WildBlue Communications, Liberty Media and many others. “The camp has received so much community support, and so much of it comes from DU,” says Howard. “We’re so grateful.”

I want to support these students from many angles and show them what is possible if you work hard.

Daniels, too, has been very supportive of the Howard Family Foundation, especially with the hiring of Dean Christine Riordan in 2008. “Dean Riordan and Kim Churches, the associate vice chancellor for development, have really embraced our Foundation,” says Howard. “The Daniels focus on giving back is more than just words.

I’m not aware of another business school that emphasizes community service like Daniels does.”

For the Howards, establishing the Foundation was never about just donating money. “From the beginning, we’ve been very involved in the scholarship selection process, and we also felt we could bring in great speakers—people we knew from our professional network,” says Howard. Once a year, in fact, the Howards host a scholarship reception at the School of Hotel, Restaurant and Tourism Management, inviting business executives to speak. “I want to support these students from many angles and show them what is possible if you work hard. We love to keep in touch with students, too, to hear where they end up.”

When it comes to future goals for the Foundation, Howard says she hopes that with time, they can connect Miracles on Ice to the scholarship program. “We’d love it if an 11-year-old who attended hockey camp this year comes to us six years from now when he needs help paying for college,” she says. “There are a lot of great kids out there who could do amazing things if they just had a little bit of help. Maybe we can give them that chance.” •

Institute for Enterprise Ethics, which will gather and share knowledge about integrating ethical, socially responsible and sustainable leadership practices into corporate culture while optimizing long-term profitability.

Williams Business Ethics Partnership to bring together corporations, students and higher education professionals on the topics of ethics compliance and sustainability, and the Center for Sustainability, which will promote best practices and constructive ideas about sustainable development strategies.

Valuating the Triple Bottom Line

The idea of sustainability sounds

Team Delta Wins Sustainability Award for the Most Effective Project

great, but as many businesses know, Social Capital implementing it is a challenge.

What does it actually mean to have sustainable business practices?

How can a company measure sustainability’s impact on its bottom line?

Therein lies the magic of Team Delta’s (of EMBA Cohort 51) social capital project, the Triple Bottom Line (3BL) Project Selection Tool. The brainchild of EMBA alumni (August 2009) Salil Gaonkar, Dan Perlman, Scott Rogers and Tania Adams, this tool took the abstract 3BL methodology of basing an organization’s success on its social, environmental and economic performance— and made it measurable.

Global Reporting Initiative, a prevalent measure of sustainability used by more than 1,500 organizations in 60 countries. That paved the way for them to develop their own “project value index,” comprised of economic, social and environmental indices. While the economic component was logical—a combined calculation of net present value, payback period, internal rate of return and several other measurements—the social component comprised eight different indices, including the employment, collective bargaining and non-discrimination, and the environmental component comprised five indices, including the emissions and recycling index.

Innovating Education Daniels and Morgridge Colleges collaborate to change the future of public education

Collaboration and innovation are nothing new at the University of Denver.

The Daniels College of Business, the Morgridge College of Education and GetSmartSchools are joining forces to develop a bold new MBA concentration in school leadership that has the potential to change the face of

public education.

Today’s teachers will attest that reforming the educational system is no easy job. As Americans strive to close achievement gaps and turn around low-performing schools, many universities are looking for new methods to prepare the next generation of educators for the myriad challenges facing public schools. So, when Denver-based GetSmartSchools, an organization dedicated to supporting and creating Colorado charter schools for low-income students, approached the Daniels College of Business and the Morgridge College of Education about developing an MBA concentration specifically for school leaders, the idea was well-received.

To Dr. Richard Scudder, associate dean of graduate programs at Daniels, the concept of combining traditional MBA curriculum with educational leadership coursework was a great fit with the College’s focus on leadership, ethics and sustainability. “This made a lot of sense to us,” says Dr. Scudder. “These students will gain a much broader perspective of what leaders do—and not just from one viewpoint. They’ll be able to tailor the group social capital work they do as part of their MBA to something that touches both the educational and business environment.”

The new MBA in school leadership will launch in the Spring 2010 quarter with a cohort of six to eight students. It is one of just a few similar programs in the country—among them, the University of Notre Dame’s new Educational Leadership Program, Rice University’s Education Entrepreneurship Program and the University of Virginia’s School Turnaround Specialist and Partnership for Leaders in Education programs. However, the Daniels concentration is unique in a number of ways, says Dr. Susan Korach, assistant professor in the Morgridge College of Education who also helped develop Morgridge’s renowned Ritchie Program for School Leaders in 2003.

“This will be an integrated, coherent program, rather than just attaching separate programs,” Dr. Korach says.

“Today’s principal has to have skills that were not typical in the past. It’s the changing role of a school leader.”

Mary Seawell, associate director of GetSmartSchools, agrees, adding that business skills are increasingly becoming part of the successful school leader’s arsenal. “What’s missing in many school leaders are the operational skills,”

This is where education is going. she says. “The more autonomy a school has, the more diverse a principal’s capabilities need to be, and things like finance and management skills become incredibly important.”

Yet another important distinction, says Dr. Korach, is that the program is designed with the end goal in mind.

“This program is built around the needs of this kind of leader,” she says. “It’s a different starting place, in a way, and our hope is that we can give students the best training to be successful.”

Dr. Korach and Dr. Kent Seidel, director of Educational Administration programs at Morgridge, are developing the educational component of the program’s curriculum. “This idea came up when we’d been reworking our curriculum for a year to better prepare school leaders,” Dr. Seidel says. “Operating 21st century schools and turning around low-performing schools takes a whole new set of skills. This is where education is going.”

Three of the new MBA students will receive a scholarship from GetSmartSchools, by way of a generous grant from the Walton Family Foundation, a program that gave $116 million to K-12 education reform in 2008.

At the culmination of the 18-month program, the students will open an autonomous school in Denver that serves a significant number of low-income students. Long-term, the hope is to have an annual cohort of 15 to 20 students.

“Our five-year goal is to have a major impact on education in the Front Range,” says Dr. Scudder.

Creating alliances between the community and other departments and colleges within the University is what makes DU unique, says Dr. Scudder. “Daniels seeks these kinds of connections,” he says. “This is an excellent example of the kind of collaboration we foster. We’re very excited.” •

For Executive Director Karen Dowd, the renovation of the Suitts Center for Graduate Career Services begins with the end goals.

Daniels master’s and MBA students won’t be the only ones to notice the changes happening at the Suitts Center for Graduate Career Services this year. Since coming on board in January, Executive Director Karen Dowd and her team, Associate Dean Richard Scudder and Dean Christine Riordan have been carefully charting the transformation of Suitts into a premier career services center on par with those of other prominent business schools across the country.

At the top of their to-do list: advance corporate partnerships.

“A big priority this year is to improve our engagement with companies—both those we’re already working with and those with whom we want to partner,” says Dr. Dowd, who, alongside Scott McLagan, executive director of Executive Education, co-leads the new corporate engagement initiative. “We all want to find that intersect where companies’ interests, needs and values connect with ours. We will consider ourselves successful when more companies become involved not just with one office or area at Daniels, but across the College and the University.”

For her part, Dean Riordan is staying true to her commitment to community building. “Chris has met with prominent alumni and senior executives at entrepreneurial and large corporations on the Front Range and around the

country, sharing the findings of the Daniels Tomorrow strategic plan,” says Dr. Dowd. “We’re both eager to reach out and discover new ways to work with outstanding companies around the world.”

Constituents can expect to see Suitts moving toward a market orientation model, whereby Suitts career consultants become “industry experts.” “The big shift I’ve seen in the past few years is that the vast majority of the best business schools realigned their staff along functional lines— management, marketing, finance, accounting,” Dr. Dowd explains. “Our goal is to provide Daniels graduate students the highest quality advice, and so our career consultants will be spending significantly more time in the field with our partner companies.”

While such endeavors will take much time, teamwork and effort, if anyone can lead the charge, it’s this 26-year career services veteran. Dr. Dowd joins Daniels from the University of Notre Dame, where she was the senior director of the Career Development office at the Mendoza College of Business. Previously, Dr. Dowd was a management consultant in New York City and director of career and placement services at the Darden Graduate School of Business at the University of Virginia. Prior to moving to Virginia, Dr. Dowd started her business school career at Daniels as director of graduate business placement.

What drew Dr. Dowd back to Daniels? “When I learned that there was a new commitment to helping Daniels advance its reputation globally, I knew I would be coming into a situation where my colleagues would welcome creativity and collaboration. I’m enthusiastic about building on the community support we’ve always had and taking this office—and helping take the College—to the next level.” •

Enterprise Solutions MBA Students Tackling Real Business Challenges Enterprise Solutions is an intensive 10-week, graduate-

level course in which students at the Daniels College of Business partner with businesses to address real opportunities or challenges and produce actionable results and recommendations. Students have completed projects with organizations such as: • Newmont Mining. Students developed metrics for measuring the community and environmental impact of Newmont’s gold mine operations in Peru.

• Kaiser Permanente. Students created a business plan for obtaining corporate sponsorships for a new public information campaign.

the goal of the Daniels Consulting Firm (DCF) is to advance the reputation of the College by helping Daniels graduate students gain real-world business experience.

According to IMBA student Alex Ridder, president of the group (and DCF’s director of consultant recruiting), the hope is that successful client engagements will lead to job opportunities. “The firm is based on a shared-success model,” says Ridder. “If DCF helps a company solve a certain problem, and down the road they decide to expand operations, we hope they consider us first for their hiring needs.”

Consulting services are free. DCF can serve small and medium-sized companies in a variety of areas, including technical financial expertise, strategies to strengthen core business operations, risk management, market research and marketing strategy and implementation. The firm has seven board members and 18 Daniels student consultants. •

Who is EMBA Cohort 54?

They are business owners. They are directors—

of operations, of sales, of marketing and product development—and managers—of business development and finance. This fall, 43 new Executive MBA students began their 18-month journey at the Daniels College of Business. Representing industries as diverse as IT (14 percent), health care (11 percent), financial services (9 percent) and food and beverage (6 percent), these seasoned executives have an average of 14 years of work experience and come from all walks of life. •

Introducing the “Gateway” Experience for Daniels Undergraduates Beginning in the Fall 2009 quarter, all Daniels undergraduate students with

sophomore standing must take two “gateway” courses (in the same quarter) before proceeding to other business courses: MGMT 2000, Foundations of Business and Management and LGST 2000, Foundations of Business Law. “The purpose of the Gateway Experience is to provide students the fundamental business knowledge necessary to succeed in the Daniels curriculum,” says Dr. Dan Connolly, associate dean of undergraduate programs and associate professor in the School of Hotel, Restaurant and Tourism Management. “These classes are the ideal time to introduce students to the Daniels Compass curriculum as well, which teaches students about leadership, ethics, sustainability and innovation in business.” Beginning in the fall, key concepts from the Compass will be incorporated into all undergraduate as well as graduate courses.

The Gateway Experience marks the launch of Daniels’ new lock-step curriculum sequence, in which classes are building blocks as students progress through the Daniels program. •

to graduate programs features 87 schools and feedback from more than 2,400 students. What do Daniels graduate students have to say about how the College implements social and environmental themes into the curriculum and student life? Here are a few highlights: • Of the 830 graduate students, 30 percent are Net Impact members.

• 22 percent of respondents felt those members are “very active,” and 28 percent felt they are “somewhat active.”

• Respondents considered Net Impact to be one of the most active clubs at the College.

• 47 percent of respondents felt that Net Impact members are adequately prepared for ethical and socially responsible leadership. •

Beyond Grey Pinstripes: Daniels Ranked No. 20

This year, Daniels placed number 20 on the Global 100 list of Beyond Grey Pinstripes, an alternative ranking by the Aspen Institute of business schools that spotlights full-time MBA programs and faculty that lead the way in integrating The Aspen Institute Center for Business Education issues of social and environmental stewardship into business school curricula and research. Daniels improved over 2007, when we placed number 47 out of 149 participating business schools.

The Financial Times ranks Executive MBA (EMBA) programs annually. In 2009, Daniels ranked 85th out of the top 95 EMBA programs in the world, up from 90th in 2008. The EMBA program ranked 35 out of domestic schools and Daniels is proud to be the only Colorado school to make this internationally ranked list of business colleges.

Daniels College of Business Ranked Among the Top 15 Percent in U.S. News & World Report The Daniels College of Business was ranked 83rd of undergraduate business programs in the 2010 U.S. News & World Report annual college rankings, placing Daniels in the top 15 percent of all accredited schools of business. Daniels tied with 17 other schools (including Texas Christian University, Loyola University Chicago, Brandeis University, Marquette University and George Mason University). The College ranked 83rd in the 2009 rankings as well.

The 183 undergraduate business programs included in the list were selected based on U.S. News & World Report’s spring 2009 survey of deans and senior faculty at undergraduate business programs accredited by the Association to Advance Collegiate Schools of Business. The quality of Daniels’ overall programs was graded 2.9 on a scale of 1 to 5, up from 2.7 in 2009.

In the undergraduate education rankings, the University of Denver ranked 84th overall, up from 89th in 2009. DU also ranked 8th in the “Up and Coming National Universities” category.

Like Father, Like Son Houston Harte Jr. Follows in Father Houston Harte Sr.’s Footsteps to the Daniels College of Business

Colorado pride runs deep in the Harte family. After one year at Mesa State College, it was ten years before Houston Harte Sr. (BSBA, 1983) completed his college education at the University of Denver. During his Denver years as a real estate developer, Harte was involved in a number of historic projects in the Highlands neighborhood before moving to Santa Barbara, California, in 1989.

“We had a wonderful experience in Denver,” says Harte. “So when we were looking at colleges for my son, Houston, I took him back to DU and he really liked what he saw.”

Like his dad, Harte Jr. (BSBA, 2009) started out elsewhere for college: Santa Barbara City College.

He spent a semester in South

America learning Spanish, but says even then, he knew he wanted to end up at DU, majoring in business.

“My family has always had a strong connection to Colorado,” says Harte Jr., whose mother grew up in Colorado Springs and grandfather served in the 10th Mountain Division of World War II. “I knew a lot about DU, and was very impressed with all that Chancellor Ritchie did and Chancellor Coombe had planned. It just seemed like the perfect school and city for me. I didn’t want to go anywhere else.” In June 2009, Harte Jr. graduated with a bachelor’s in real estate and construction management.

From the Classroom to the Job Site While his father’s love for the University was a factor in his decision to come to DU, for Houston Harte Jr., RECM’s Residential Practicum was the other.

The three-course sequence, launched by RECM Professor Stuart Stein in 1994 in collaboration with Oakwood Homes, is taken during a student’s senior year and culminates with student teams building a home from start to finish. The capstone is designed to emphasize the practical application of the theories and concepts of residential development.

Harte and his classmates handled everything from obtaining permits to selling the property. In June 2009—on his graduation day—the home Harte’s team built in Green Valley Ranch sold. Proceeds from the sale were split between the Boys and Girls Club of Metro Denver and the University of Denver Scholarship Fund.

Fund at the University of Denver, donating a $10,000 gift while they build the fund over the next three to five years. “This is very similar to things my family has done for years, and we just like to assist by giving students the financial help they need,” says Harte Sr. “It’s a family theme, you could say.”

For Harte Jr., his father’s lifelong generosity has been impactful in many ways. “It’s always been important in my family to give,” says Harte Jr. “I think if you have the opportunity to give back, you should. I’m glad that what my parents are giving will make a difference and help intelligent young people achieve their goals.”

As Harte Jr. begins his career with AppFolio, a Santa Barbarabased property management software company, he states that like his father, there is a special place in his heart for the University of Denver and the Daniels College of Business. “I feel like Daniels prepared me extremely well not just for business, but for life,” says Harte Jr. “There are so many professors who made my experience so great. I’m going to stay involved as an alumnus as much as possible.” Will he send his own son to DU one day? “I hope so! I’d love to…it’s an excellent school.” •

Dafna Michaelson: Journeywoman Traveling to 50 states in 52 weeks to find the people moving America forward.

In the summer of 2008, Dafna Michaelson (MBA, ‘03) bought a lottery ticket and, as many do, she daydreamed how she would

I

spend her hypothetical winnings.

“I remember thinking that if I had millions of dollars, I would travel around the country and talk to people to learn how states can work together, how everyday people come up with great ways to solve the country’s problems,” Michaelson says. “Then I realized I didn’t need to win the lottery to do that. Why not now?”

Before long, Michaelson quit her job as the director of volunteer services at Denver Health, established a nonprofit organization—50 in 52 Journey—and made plans to travel to one state a week in 2009. She liquidated her 401(k) for seed money.

Today, Michaelson is 42 weeks—and states—into her journey. She’s been nominated as a 2009 CNN Hero.

She was interviewed on Dr. Maya Angelou’s radio show.

But more importantly, Michaelson says, she’s met some pretty amazing people. “Every single person I’ve met has the pioneering spirit that this country was built upon,” says Michaelson. “They have this commitment to not only help themselves, but help others. That’s how America was built, and these people live their lives this way today.”

When Michaelson concludes her year-long journey in December, she’ll launch the 50 in 52 Journey Foundation, a sustainable resource network that will match community problem solvers around the country seeking to solve similar issues in different states. She intends to host four four-day summits each year in Denver. Michaelson will spend 2010 writing a book about her journey and the problems that people are striving to solve. •

Tait Robinson (IMBA, 2009) recently started a new position as a senior manager of program management and financial engineering at Gravity Investments in Englewood, Colorado.

Chris Stewart (MBA, 2009) joined the National Renewable Energy Lab in Golden, Colorado, in March 2009 as a senior communicator.

Alex Bjork (IMBA/MA, 2008) started an internship at the World Wildlife Fund in Washington, D.C. in September 2009, and is working in the agriculture department doing supply chain risk analysis.

Kyle Hanson (MBA, 2005) is the COO at TwoMedicine Health & Financial Fitness, which helps clients implement employee-driven, long-term strategies to improve employees’ health and reduce health care costs.

Ian Ivarson (BSBA, 2004) of San Francisco is the founder of Ivar, a company that manufactures and sells ergonomic backpacks.

Eric Tirnauer (MBA, 2003) and wife, Lisa, welcomed son, Adam Bradley, to their family.

Raed Rajab (MBA, 2003 and MAcc, 2004) teaches accounting at Birzeit University in Ramallah, Palestine.

Kyle Reeves (MBA, 2003) is a senior marketing communications specialist at FLIR Systems in Boston, Massachusetts.

Lindsey Duncan (BBA, 2002; MBA, 2004) and Matthew Millns (MBA, 2004) were married on July 5, 2008, at the Spruce Saddle Lodge in Beaver Creek, Colorado. The couple lives in Fort Worth, Texas.

Chris Stoneman (MBA, 1994) is the vice president of operations at iCAST (International Center for Appropriate and Sustainable Technologies) in Denver.

Jim Stirbis (BS, MAcc, 1992) is the chief accounting officer at Local Insight Media in Englewood, Colorado. He and his wife, Sherri, have two boys, Nicholas and Alex.

1970s 1970s

Eugene Kotlarek (MBA, 1976) created and leads Ideal Genesis Corp., an administrative services company headquartered in Denver. Kotlarek is the president of the U.S. Olympians Association’s Colorado alumni group.

He also was a member of the 1960 and 1964 Olympic ski teams and head coach for the U.S. Olympic ski teams in 1969 and 1970. Kotlarek lives in Colorado Springs.

Steve Vickner (MBA, 1990), an avid cyclist, recently raised funds for cancer research by riding 180 miles in two days in August 2009, after passing his own personal milestone: seven years cancer free. Vickner resides in Columbus, Ohio, and is the chair of the MBA program at Franklin University. He is also the founder of OutdoorMetrics, an economic research consultancy focused on environmental policy, sustainable management of natural resources and market research for the outdoor recreation industry.

Bobbe Hirsh (MBA, 1975) is a partner with K&L Gates in Chicago, Illinois, a 1,900-person law firm with 32 offices on three continents. After graduating from the University of Denver, Hirsh went on to earn her JD from Harvard Law School in 1980.

George Del Canto (BSBA, 1974) is founder and co-owner of Kingdom Racing, the first faith-based team ever to compete at the Indianapolis Motor Speedway. Kingdom Racing came in 14th in the 2008 Indianapolis 500.

Del Canto lives in Houston with his wife, Maria, and their three children, Cristina, Carolina and Alejandro.

1980s

Sarah Neumeier (BSBA, 1989) received a master’s of science in health informatics from the University of Minnesota. She lives in Edina, MN. John Winsor (MBA, 1985), the vice president and executive director of strategy and innovation at Crispin, Porter and Bogusky, will introduce two new books this fall: Baked In: The Power of Aligning Marketing and Product Innovation, co-authored with Alex Bogusky, and Flipped: How Bottom-Up Co-creation is Replacing Top-Down Innovation.

Michael Miller (BSBA, 1985) of Albany, Indiana, is the president and COO of Bell Aquaculture, a company that raises fish for human consumption.

In October, Miller’s company was featured in Food Engineering Magazine.

Jeff Johnston (BSBA, 1975) recently started a company in Atlanta, Georgia, called Centauri Partners LLC, which builds and delivers advanced decision support solutions to risk and fraud managers. Johnston misses DU hockey games—go Pioneers!

HIRED: Faculty Daniel W. Baack, Ph.D., BS, BA Assistant Professor, Department of Marketing Dr. Dan Baack joins Daniels from Ball State University. His research interests include the influence of culture on advertising, the role of advertising in building brand equity and international marketing. He has consulted for a variety of firms including Monsanto, 365 Media, and Hoosier Gym and is one of the founding partners of the Saint Louis-based Brand Cartography Group. Dr. Baack received his Ph.D. in marketing and international business from Saint Louis University and bachelor’s degrees in psychology and English from Truman State University.

He has given presentations in the United States and Canada, China, Italy, Mexico, Sweden and Taiwan.

Dr. Stephen Sewalk has 17 years of experience in construction, finance, e-commerce and consulting. He has worked at companies in a variety of industries, including energy, technology and banking. His research interests are focused on energy and include construction, carbon limits, policy, laws and financing. Dr. Sewalk is receiving a Ph.D. in civil engineering from the University of Colorado at Boulder and a JD from the University of Denver. He received a dual MBA from Columbia and London Business Schools, as well as a master’s degree in petroleum engineering from Stanford University and a master’s and bachelor’s in economics from Brigham Young University.

Dr. Andy Sherbo has 33 years of experience in financial management, cost/economic analysis and accounting, and has spent a significant portion of his career with the United States Air Force. He has taught at several institutions around the country and has been teaching at Daniels since 2006.

Dr. Sherbo received his Ph.D. in public policy analysis and administration from Saint Louis University, a master’s in public administration–finance from the University of Georgia and a bachelor’s in public administration from Drake University.

Achievements ::

Congratulations to Team Daniels Winners of the 2009 Race & Case Competition On February 27–28, 2009, the Daniels College of Business team competed against teams from 11 other business schools, taking second place in both the race and case portions of the competition. Daniels came away with the highest overall team score, winning this year’s competition and taking home the coveted Daniels Cup. Teams presented on the case, “Susan Murcott and Pure Home Water: Building a Mission Driven Enterprise in Northern Ghana,” which addressed the challenges facing Susan Murcott, environmental engineer, senior lecturer in the Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, and founder of the non-governmental organization Pure Home Water. Since starting Pure Home Water in 2005, Murcott has struggled to establish it as a self-sustaining organization capable of supplying affordable ceramic water filters to the poor rural areas of northern Ghana.

The Daniels team’s three-part strategy included 1) forming a corporate partnership with The Coca-Cola Company and the professional soccer team in Tamale, Ghana, to increase education and awareness, 2) beginning micro-lending to address water filter affordability issues, and 3) building a new factory in Tamale to produce the water filters, rather than continuing to use the low-quality, expensive ceramic manufacturer in Accra, 14 hours south of Tamale.

Members of the winning team were Sayantan Banerjee, Erika Lapsys, Adam Loveland, Rhys Williams and Alex Wilson. •
