2012 Accounting Scholars Elden Arroyo

Elden Arroyo was born and raised on a ranch in the small, agricultural town of Watsonville on the central coast of California. He has been interested in business since his youth, discovering the answers to his childhood questions in his first college accounting class. He is currently working on completing his transfer requirements at Cabrillo College, Aptos, and expects to transfer to San Jose State University for accounting in the fall of 2013.

Marianelys Barrios

Marianelys currently attends Miami Dade College and is completing her Associate’s degree. Her future goals include transfering to a higher education institution to pursue her Bachelor’s degree. Marianelys is interested in Amherst College, University of Denver and the University of Florida. Marianelys is affiliated with the National Society of Leadership and Success, which is an organization that prepares today’s youth for a brighter tomorrow. She also works part time at Publix Supermarkets in the bakery department; there she assists customers with product selection and helps with inventory count.

Myesha Bedford

Myesha Bedford was born and raised in Fitzgerald, Georgia. She recently graduated from Abraham Baldwin Agricultural College with an Associate of Science degree in Business Administration. She currently attends Georgia Southwestern State University where she is working on obtaining her Bachelor’s degree in Accounting.

Her top goals are to become a CPA and to work for the IRS. She enjoys spending time with her friends and family and also being involved at her church.

Mahdi Bhuyan

Being born in the small country, Bangladesh, Mahdi Bhuyan’s dream was to become an accountant. To make his dream come true and to have better opportunities in life, he moved to the US in 2009 at the age of 19. Currently he is finishing his A.A.S in Accounting from the Borough of Manhattan Community College. He plans to transfer to Hunter College or to the University of Denver to pursue his Bachelor’s and Master’s degree in order to become a CPA. He is currently working at the NYC Department of Sanitation in the Audits & Accounts division. During his free time, he likes movies, music, traveling & visiting family.

Tony Briscoe Tony is from Denver, Colorado and enjoys doing physical therapy. After an accident left Tony classified as a parapalegic, Tony was a patient at Craig Hospital where he participated in rehabilitation and regained his ability to walk. He enjoys giving back to others and helping those in need. Tony currently attends the Community College of Aurora as a sophomore with a 3.4 GPA. He has plans to transfer to the University of Denver’s Daniels College of Business to earn a Master’s in Accountancy.

Yesit Campo

Yesit is transferring from Santa Monica College to the University of Southern California.

He plans to major in business and minor in accounting. His future goals include possibly attending a law school to specialize in corporate or tax law. He works part time for an accounting firm in Miami called Bizcpas, where he handles bookkeeping for companies that specialize in logistics, real estate, and medical practices. When he isn’t focusing on his education and career, he enjoys doing physical activities like lifting weights, playing basketball, and boxing, as well as spending time with his family and close friends.

Raul Chavez

Raul Chavez is a student at Evergreen Valley College located in San Jose, California. He has received his Associate’s degree in business administration and in the winter of 2013 will be attending East Bay University in Hayward, California where he will work towards both a Bachelor’s and Master’s degree in Accounting.

Larry Chavis Larry Chavis, a Native American with membership in the Lumbee Tribe of North Carolina, attends Richmond Community College where he will earn an Associate’s degree in accounting in May 2013. After earning his Associate’s degree, he plans to attend the University of North Carolina at Greensboro to pursue a Bachelor’s degree in accounting and an MBA through an accelerated Master’s program. At this pace, Mr. Chavis will be able to sit for the NC CPA exams in the 2015-2016 academic year. Larry is a member of Phi Theta Kappa. He also serves as Ambassador of Richmond Community College.

Landry de Souza Landry de Souza lives in Denver, Colorado. He earned an Associate’s degree in accounting from the Community College of Aurora in May 2012. He’s currently a student at Regis University of Denver where he is working on his Bachelor’s degree. He also plans to get his Master’s degree in accounting at the University of Denver after graduating from Regis in 2014. Outside of school, Landry spends most of his time listening to audio books. He especially enjoys books related to personal development, leadership, economics, CPA programs, and self improvement.

His dream is to work for a big accounting firm until he becomes self-employed.

Lydia Divinity Lydia Divinity is from New Orleans, Louisiana. She attends Delgado Community College where she is majoring in Accounting. Lydia will graduate in the spring of 2013 with an associate’s degree and will be attending the University of New Orleans where she’ll be pursuing a bachelor’s degree. Lydia is a member of Phi Theta Kappa Honor Society and loves spending time with her handsome two year old son, Kevin.

Joanna Dondiego

Joanna Dondiego is from Pico Rivera, California. She is currently attending Rio Hondo College working towards an Associate’s degree in Business Administration.

She plans to transfer to California State University, Bakersfield where she will work towards a Bachelor’s degree in Business Administration. After that, she plans to transfer to University of Denver to earn a MAcc. Her goals include successfully completing the CPA Exam and obtaining a job in Forensic Accounting.

Michael Estrada

Michael is currently working as a bartender and server at a restaurant in San Jose, California and transferred from San Jose City College to San Jose State University in fall 2012. He is also a member of the AICPA. Michael is entering his junior year of college in his pursuit of a Bachelor's and Master's degree in accounting. Michael aspires to become a CPA in the near future. In his free time, Michael enjoys playing sports and helping his niece and nephew in their extracurricular activities

David Finn

David Finn was born and raised in Denver, Colorado. He is currently completing his Associate’s of Arts in Business at Arapahoe Community College in Littleton, Colorado. He maintains a 3.8 GPA, works part-time, and supports two beautiful children. In the Fall of 2013, he plans to transferr to a four-year university to earn a Bachelor’s degree.

Carlos Gutierrez

Carlos transferred from Abraham Baldwin Agricultural College and is currently earning his Bachelor’s of Business Administration in Accounting from Valdosta State University. Moreover, he plans to earn a certificate of internal auditing and health care administration. He is currently working for Carr, Riggs, and Ingram, 34th largest CPA firm in the nation, as a staff intern. He also works as a tutor for the College Assistance Migrant Program (CAMP) organization, which assists migrant students. He is an active member of Georgia Society of CPAs and an anticipated member of Beta Alpha Psi. When he is not working, he enjoys painting and relaxing with his family in the southern prairies of Georgia.

Issouf Kafando

Issouf Kafando is originally from Burkina Faso located in West Africa. He recently graduated with an Associate’s degree in Accounting with Honors from the Borough of Manhattan Community College where he was the Accounting Club Vice-President. Issouf will be attending Baruch College in the fall of 2012. He is currently working on creating a nonprofit organization to support education in his home country as well creating his own business. He describes himself as a very driven and hardworking person who has passion for accounting, economics, languages and politics. Issouf’s future goal is to become a CPA.

Taye Kidane

Taye Kidane, originally from Ethiopia, has lived in Denver since 2005. He studies accounting at the Community College of Aurora. Currently, he is a board member of Stretch Hands for the Children, a non-profit organization that assists children in all aspect of life. Taye plans to transfer to the University of Colorado Denver to earn his Bachelor’s degree. He looks forward to becoming a CPA before 2015 and an accounting professor before 2020. Taye enjoys attending church and spending time with his family.

Ashley Letts

Ashley Letts is originally from Jamaica. After graduating high school, she moved to the United States to attend college. She currently works as a cashier at a food store located in Brooklyn,New York. Alongside working, Ashley attends the Borough of Manhattan Community College where she is the secretary for the school’s accounting club. Upon earning an Associate’s degree, she plans to attend Baruch College’s Zicklin School of Business.

Michael Montoya

Michael Montoya is a currently completing his associates degree at the Community College of Denver. After graduating from CCD he plans to transfer to the University of Colorado or Colorado State University to study accounting. Michael holds a 4.0 GPA and is a member of the Phi Theta Kappa and Psi Beta honors societies. Before attending the ASDP at DU this summer, Michael participated in the business delegation of the International Scholar Laureate Program in China. In his free time Michael enjoys cycling, traveling and attending concerts and sporting events.

Bryan Morgan

Bryan Morgan Jr. is from San Antonio, Texas. Bryan recently graduated with his Associate’s degree from NorthWest Vista College where he was a member of Phi Theta Kappa. Bryan will be transferring to The University of Texas at San Antonio in the fall of 2012 where he has been accepted into the Honors College. Bryan hopes to earn his Bachelor’s degree in Accounting and his M.P.A with plans to sit for the CPA exam. Bryan works full-time at HEB Grocery Company and volunteers with the San Antonio Food Bank and Junior Achievement. He intends to pursue a career in public accounting after graduation.

Rosielen Perez

Rosielen Perez was born in Cuba and immigrated to United States in 2008. She is currently finishing her Associate’s degree in Accounting at Miami Dade College and is looking forward to continuing her education and completing her Bachelor’s degree in Accounting at Florida Atlantic University. She works full time in an accounting office while attending school part-time. She continues to be grateful for her participation in the Accounting Scholars Development Program and believes it was an unforgettable lifetime experience. It has made her realize that as an accountant she can help not only herself but others in her community to start businesses that will enhance her neighborhood.

Jacklyn Quiroga Jacky attends South Texas College while working two jobs. She is also a voluntary Sunday School teacher. She plans to transfer to UT Pan American and major in accounting.

Karla Ramirez Gonzalez

Karla was born in Mexico City and moved to California in 2008. During her first year at Riverside Community College she interned at the Child Leader Project, a non-profit organization. She is a full-time student at Santa Monica College where she works 20 hours a week while attending school. Her goal is to transfer to USC in the fall of 2013 where she will work towards her bachelor’s degree in accounting.

Outside of school, Karla enjoys being with her family, traveling, and singing.

Alissha Roach

Alissha Naomi Roach lives in Stockton, California. She recently transferred from San Joaquin Delta College to California State University, Fullerton where she has been accepted into the College of Business. In addition to learning more about becoming a CPA, she enjoys voluteering at her church as an office assistant, child daycare teacher, and staff members for youth events.

Kattie Robleto

Kattie transferred from Miami Dade College and is currently a full-time student at Florida International University where she is a junior working towards her Bachelor's Degree in Accounting. She also works as an accounting specialist at an accounting firm in the Miami area. Kattie also enjoys volunteering for campus organizations such as ACCESS, affiliated with helping the disabled. When she is not studying for exams or working, Kattie enjoys playing piano, running, or spending the day at the beach.

Elizabeth Rocha-Rocha

Elizabeth Rocha-Rocha was born and raised in Watsonville, California. She is a recent graduate of Cabrillo College. She earned an Associate’s Degree in Business and an Associate’s Degree in Liberal Arts and Sciences. She will be attending San Jose State University in fall 2012 where she plans on earning a Bachelor’s Degree in Business Administration with a Concentration in Accounting, becoming a CPA, and obtaining a Master’s Degree. Her career goal is to have her own business; alternatively she would like to work for a big accounting firm. She is motivated in impacting her community and her family in a positive way.

Daisy Rodriguez

Daisy Rodriguez is from Chicago, Illinois. After graduating high school in 2010, Daisy attended the University of Illinois at Chicago majoring in biological sciences.

She then transferred to the College of DuPage to pursue a different major. In Fall 2012, she will be returning to UIC as an accounting major. She plans to get a Bachelor’s of Science in Accounting, pursue an MBA, and become a CPA.

Jensy Sanchez

Jensy is currently finishing up his associate’s degree at CUNY Bronx Community College. He will be attending the University of Albany in the fall of 2012 to pursue his Bachelor of Science in Accounting. Three years from now he excepts to have his CPA license and be working for Ernst & Young in their auditing or advising department. Jensy’s longterm goals are to start his own accounting firm and open a restaurant. During his free time he enjoys playing sports and hanging out with his friends.

Michelle Schoen

Michelle currently owns a small business negotiating real estate short sales for homeowners with complicated financial problems. She is also the Co-President of the Westwood Residents Association. She will graduate from Community College of Denver with an AAS in Accounting in December, 2012, at which time she will be transferring to Regis University. When she graduates, she would like to open her own accounting firm, specializing in low-income financial services and taxes.

In her spare time, she volunteers with many non-profits in the SW Denver area and relaxes in her backyard garden.

LaShanette Shapiro

LaShanette Shapiro earned her Associate of Arts Degree in Accounting from Santa Monica College in California. LaShanette is transferring to Columbia University in the City of New York, where she will study Financial Economics. While at Santa Monica College, she attained an accounting GPA of 4.00, overall GPA of 3.70, and she was an active member of Black Collegians, Rotaract Business Club, Phi Theta Kappa and Alpha Gamma Sigma honor societies. She is the recipient of numerous awards and scholarships, most notably The Presidential Volunteer Service Award two consecutive years, 2011 and 2012.

Her career objectives are to earn a Masters in Accounting degree, obtain her CPA license, and pursue a career in public or private accounting, specializing in Internal Audit.

Cara Sylvers

Cara Sylvers from Houston, Texas currently works as a Customer Service Representative at Patriot Bank. Cara recently finished her core classes at San Jacinto Community College. She will begin the fall quarter of 2012 at the University of Denver where she plans to pursue her Bachelor and Master degrees in Accounting. When she is not working, Cara enjoys cooking, spending time with family and volunteering in the finance and music departments at her church.

Amy Tineo

Amy Tineo, from New York City, is the first to attend college in her family. She graduated this June from Bronx Community College (BCC) with a GPA of 4.0 in Accounting and an overall GPA of 3.59. At BCC she was the secretary of the Alpha Beta Gamma Club and was part of the Phi Theta Kappa honor society.

She has been accepted to Baruch College where she plans to pursue her B.B.A. and Master’s in Accounting. In her free time she loves running and one of her goals is to join the women’s cross country team at Baruch College. She has been offered the opportunity to work for a small company to keep their QuickBooks up to date and she can’t wait for more doors to open.

Erik Vazquez

Erik, from St. Louis Missouri, will be attending his second year of college at St Charles Community College this upcoming fall of 2012. After obtaining an associate’s degree, he plans to enroll in the University of Missouri, St Louis, where he will major in Accounting. Though usually busy with work, Erik can often be seen napping, eating, or giving tours of St Charles Community College through the college’s Student Ambassadors program.

Allen Wilson-Myers II

Allen Wilson-Myers is from Odenton, Maryland. Allen currently works as a Standardized Patient at University of Maryland Baltimore City. He is also an accomplished actor. He has recently graduated from Anne Arundel Community College with his Associate’s Degree. He is continuing his education at Morehouse College in Atlanta and will earn a Bachelor’s Degree in Business Administration with a concentration in Accounting. When he is not working, Allen enjoys acting, working out, traveling to new places and experiencing new things.

2012 ASDP Counselors Mallory Blanchard

Mallory Blanchard is a senior accounting major at the University of Denver. She is from Minnesota, but was lured by the mountains and DU to Colorado! Upon graduating with her masters in accountancy, Mallory hopes to work in public accounting in Denver. In her free time she enjoys writing, reading and running.

Jon Havey

Jon is a senior at the University of Denver pursuing a double major in Accounting and Film Studies and Production and is applying for the MBA program with an accounting emphasis. His goal is to redefine the film and entertainment industry by integrating accounting, filmmaking and the dawn of social media marketing. Jon has a love for the creativity and the business behind the industry and is building a strong video portfolio and learning leadership skills from various Leadership Programs. Jon has founded three companies: Vlizz, LLC, Mile High Pictures, LLC, and-Mile High Movie Reviews, LLC .

Grant Kilmer

Grant recently graduated with a Bachelor’s of Science in Accountancy from the University of Denver in June, 2012. Originally from Davenport, IA, Grant has chosen to stay in Denver after graduation and pursue his career in the finance industry at Lincoln Financial Advisors. Outside of work Grant enjoys spending his time outdoors golfing, skiing, running, biking and hiking.

Daniel O’Laughlin

Daniel O’Laughlin is originally from Chico, California and is a senior accounting major at the University of Denver. He enjoys competing in triathlons and riding his bike. Recently, he completed his first Olympic distance triathlon. Daniel was just accepted into the 3-2 program at DU and plans to graduate with his MAcc in June 2014. His future goals include working in public accounting.

Alicia Prince

Alicia is originally from Woodinville, Washington, but has lived in Denver, CO for the past five years. She graduated from the University of Denver with her Bachelor’s of Science in Accounting in 2011 and her Master of Accountancy in 2012. Outside of school, Alicia has been figure skating for the past 16 years and also enjoys hiking, photography and basketball.

Khanh Tran

Khanh is currently a student at the University of Denver working on her Masters of Accountancy. Although she is excited to put her degree to use at potentially one of the big four accounting firms, she is in no rush and participates in a wide range of extracurricular activities at school such as DU Latin Dance, DU Programming Board, Senior Class Council, and volunteers by tutoring a student weekly. In her spare time, Khanh loves to shop, play her violin, and practice Taekwondo. Originally from Vietnam, she also loves exploring and learning about different cultures.

Svetlana Yamanova

Svetlana Yamanova is originally from Russia. She graduated Summa Cum Laude with a Bachelor’s degree in Accounting from the Metropolitan State University of Denver. She received a merit-based scholarship to pursue a Master’s in Taxation degree at University of Denver, Graduate Tax Program, starting in the fall of 2012.

While at Metro State, Svetlana was heavily involved with the Accounting Students Organization. Her last semester there she served as its President, organizing various career development events and providing an overall direction of the organization.

She volunteers for two non-profits in Wheat Ridge, CO: Seniors’ Resource Center and Friendship Bridge. Her hobbies include yoga, hiking, working out, and independent/foreign movies.

2012 ASDP Administrators Dr. Sharon Lassar

Sharon founded the Accounting Scholars Development Program in 2010 to attract exceptional students to a profession that will use their talents and propel their careers in various rewarding directions. She is the John J. Gilbert Endowed Professor and Director of the School of Accountancy in the Daniels College of Business at The University of Denver. Lassar has served the profession in many roles and is currently on the Pre-Certification Education Executive Committee of the American Institute of Certified Public Accountants (AICPA) and on the Corporate Advisory Board for ALPFA, the country’s largest minority professional organization. She earned her PhD at the University of Southern California, her Master of Taxation at Bentley University, and her Bachelor of Accounting at West Virginia University.

Kathleen Davisson

Kathleen has a BS in Accounting and Master of Accountancy from the University of Denver. She is a licensed CPA in the state of Colorado. She serves on the Careers committee of the Colorado Society of Certified Public Accountants. She has held executive positions with a computer networking firm and a computer training firm. She teaches accounting information systems and managerial accounting. Her favorite role is that of advisor to the dual degree accounting students at the University of Denver.

Sidney Askew

As former treasurer and board member of The Carter G. Woodson Foundation (Newark, N.J.), Sidney Askew is an Associate Professor - Accounting at the Borough of Manhattan Community College (CUNY). Sidney has worked as an examiner for the Comptroller of the Currency. In private industry, he held several roles from auditor to financial analyst for many leading global financial institutions.

A member of the AICPA, the ACFE, and the American Accounting Association, Sidney’s favorite role is teaching accounting and steering accounting students towards the many career opportunities in the accounting profession. Sidney is a graduate of Syracuse University and Cornell University.

Jeanie O’Laughlin

Jeanie has a BS in Accounting and an MBA in Marketing from California State University, San Bernardino; a PhD in Higher Education Administration from Claremont Graduate University; and is a licensed CPA in South Dakota and Colorado. She has held accounting positions in a public utility; a manufacturing firm; and non-profit organizations. She has taught accounting full-time for several years and runs volunteer income tax assistance VITA programs. Jeanie is married and has two sons.
