2011 Accounting Scholars Giovanny Alfonso Giovanny Alfonso was born and raised in Miami, Florida to a Cuban American family. He attended the Honors College at Miami Dade College and received his Associate’s Degree in Business Administration. Giovanny is a very driven and hardworking young man who has a passion for business. He is determined and goal orientated and can achieve anything he sets his mind on. His future goals are to graduate from FIU and earn a Master’s Degree from one of the country’s finest business schools.

Clara Ardon Clara was born in Colombia, and immigrated to the United States when she was 19 years old. She originally majored in Industrial Engineering in Colombia, but changed her major to Accounting when she arrived in the United States. Clara is currently finishing her A.A. in Accounting and is looking forward to becoming a CPA. She was very grateful to be part of this program and views it as a stepping stone for a successful professional life. She has been accepted into the College of Business at Florida International University. She is planning on working as a tutor this upcoming fall and also plans on joining BetaAlphaPsi.

Nathan Brown Nathan Brown is currently a student at the University of Denver. He will be entering his junior year and continuing his major in political science with a minor in Criminology. As his junior year is rapidly approaching, Nathan aspires to further his education and hopes to be accepted into the Master’s in Accounting Program at the University of Denver. Nathan is thankful for having received a number of scholarships, one being the Daniels Fund, which serves as a constant motivator for his success. He currently has the ability to choose any path for a career but continues to have an interest in the business sector, more specifically in Accounting and Tax. Further into his career he wants to possess the power to make a positive change in the world by helping one person at a time.

Richard Buckley Richard Buckley is originally from Prentiss, Mississippi. He studies Business Administration and Accounting at Atlanta Metropolitan College where he anticipates to graduate in the spring of 2012. He looks forward to being involved with numbers and people in his future. He enjoys volunteering for SafeRide America, a social enterprise program that effectively provides a proven, practical and affordable answer to stopping impaired driving incidents before they happen. Rich also enjoys tutoring young adults earning their G.E.D. He looks forward to becoming a CPA and specializing in merger and acquisition transactions. He believes that his goal of becoming a CPA will help him to inform others on the importance of accounting practices in everyday life with budgets and planning.

Nahnbah Ciccarello Nahnbah Ciccarello is a member of the Diné tribe. Her family comes from Roanhorse Canyon, near the small town of Navajo, New Mexico. She is a proud, single parent of her spunky three year old boy, Eliott. She is of the Dibelizhini clan born for Naaneesht’ezhi Dine’e. She represents Navajo Technical College in Crownpoint, New Mexico, and has already secured a Bookkeeping Certificate. After she completes her AAS in Accounting at NTC, she plans on pursuing a Bachelor’s degree. Her career goal is to become a Certified Public Accountant. Her daily endeavors include being a positive role model and providing a safe and harmonious environment for her son.

Ana Cruz Ana Cruz was born in NYC and raised in the Dominican Republic. She currently she lives in The Bronx, NY with her three wonderful daughters, mother and husband. She studies accounting full time at Bronx Community College and works part time as teller at Citibank. She is proud of herself because she has been selected as the “Citi Star” (best employee) of 2010 at Citibank, rewarded with an all-inclusive trip to Chicago, IL. Also, the selection into the ASDP is another one of her marvelous experiences of 2011. Her goals are to finish her Associate’s Degree and to continue on to earn her Bachelor’s Degree and CPA.

Angela Eddleman Angela Eddleman, originally from Mexico, was raised in California since the age of three. Although she initially majored in psychology to work with children, she learned that the accounting and finance areas of studies brought her a better sense of fulfillment and satisfaction. Angela is currently a student at Citrus College and plans to transfer to California State University in Fullerton, CA or Azusa Pacific University. As a first generation college student, it brings her pride and honor to be an exemplar role model to her younger sisters and her children, and set the foundation through a higher education that one can obtain a successful, fruitful and rewarding career.

Brent Edgerton Brent’s goal is to serve the public. As a child in elementary school he realized how much his family depended upon those talented men and women that serve the public. He loves managing finances and brainstorming ideas to create more income. He transferred from Ashville-Buncombe Technical Community College to Western Carolina University and intends to focus on business management as a major with a minor in accounting. As future employees, Brent believes, we need to be able to manage ourselves before we command leadership from our peers. Brent believes that his self-determination will guide him through an accredited graduate program. After a year of experience and tutelage from a licensed CPA, he would like to give financial counseling in a community outreach program similar to this one.

Shampaine Escobar Shampaine Escobar is currently a student at Dekalb Technical College located in Clarkston, GA where she is pursuing her Associate’s Degree in Accounting.

Her tentative graduation date is May 2012. She plans to continue her education by obtaining a Bachelor of Business Administration in Accounting Degree at Clayton State University. Her short-term goal is to become a Certified Public Accountant. Shampaine, originally from Macon, GA, resides in Atlanta.

Roberta Espinosa

Christa Evans Christa Evans is from Fort Worth, Texas. She graduated from North Crowley High School, and then went on to study fashion design at Baylor University.

She decided to expand her career options by studying Business at Tarrant County College, where she became a member of Phi Theta Kappa Honor Society and maintained a spot on the Dean's List. This fall, Christa will be a student at Texas Christian University, and will complete a double degree in Accounting and Finance. Christa's interests revolve around creativity, a result of her innate artistic ability. Studying business will be an asset to her in future endeavors, as her goal is to help, not only herself, but others in her community start businesses that will enhance her neighborhood.

Marlon Francis Marlon Anthony Francis was born in Yonkers, NY in September of 1982. He is the father of Madison Khai Francis. Marlon currently attends Berkeley College in White Plains, NY where he is pursuing is B.B.A focused on Accounting. Marlon is scheduled to graduate in the summer of 2013. Upon graduation Marlon will pursue a JD/MBA at Pace University in New York.

Marlon's work experience consists of employment with some of the top banks in the country like Wells Fargo, Chase Bank Card Services, Bank One, and JPMorgan Chase.

Jarrett Gatson Jarrett Gatson is from Barrington, IL, a mid-sized town about 40 minutes northwest of Chicago. Jarrett began his college career at William Rainey Harper College and this fall will transfer to Purdue University, located in West Lafayette, IN. Jarrett plans to study Accounting at Purdue with a minor in Management.

Felicia Gross Felicia Gross, originally from Washington, DC, is a first generation college student. She attends Prince George’s Community College and is pursuing her Associate of Science Degree in Accounting. After originally planning on attending Frostburg State University to earn her Bachelor’s Degree in Accounting, she has changed her plans. After the ASDP she realized that Accounting was not her calling. Felicia now plans to double major in Social Work and Sociology.

Bree Harjo Bree Harjo is originally from Ada, Oklahoma. She transferred from Oklahoma City Community College and is currently enrolled at Price Business College at the University of Oklahoma. Bree has been interested in Accounting for several years and is excited about completing her education with a Master’s of Accounting in 2014. Her future plans include working for the Seminole Nation of Oklahoma. She plans on using her education and background to help build a strong future for her tribe and future generations.

Miguel Jaramillo Miguel Jaramillo is originally from Quito, Ecuador; He graduated from Aeronautical High School in 2002 and in 2003 attended the Technological University to obtain a degree in International Commerce. Miguel moved to the U.S. in 2007 after obtaining his U.S. citizenship. Miguel started working at a medical clinic in October 2009 as an office assistant. In the summer of 2010, Miguel enrolled at Central Piedmont Community College to obtain his Associate’s degree. He expects to transfer to a four year institution to continue his education in accounting.

Mitchell Lindsay Mitchell Lindsay transferred from Los Angeles Mission College to become an Honors Accounting Major at Loyola Marymount University, in Los Angeles, CA. He is currently in his sophomore year and will complete his undergraduate degree in spring 2013. He is an active member in CalCPA, as well as a student affiliate of the AICPA. Mitchell’s career objectives include: obtaining his CPA license, earning a J.D. from Loyola Law School, pursuing a career in Mergers and Acquisitions, and eventually starting his own private equity firm.

Araceli Lopez Araceli Lopez Ramos is originally from Aguascalientes, Mexico; at an early age she immigrated to the United States. She will transfer from Colorado Mountain College to Regis University in Denver, Colorado to obtain her Bachelor’s Degree fall 2011.

Her motivation to attend the Accounting Scholars Development Program was to help her to decide what to study. From the program she was able to experience the real picture of an accountant in different perspectives, which will help her make a decision. Araceli hopes to obtain her Bachelor’s degree in two years. After graduating from Regis University she wants to have a career in an important and prestigious firm or company.

Dwyght Mack Dwyght is an outgoing person. When assigned a task, he aims to complete it.

Dwyght is from The Bronx in New York; He has earned two Associate’s Degrees, all while running his own real estate business. Dwyght’s real passion is in business and his future goal is to become a CFO for a company and possibly work as a traveling accountant. This fall, Dwyght plans to complete his second semester at Hudson Valley Community College, apply to a four year college, and prepare to take a tax course for H&R block or Liberty tax so he can begin his accounting career.

Kenneth Mazo Kenneth Mazo was in the United States Marine Corps (USMC) for six years. He has been to over 25 countries, including Iraq and Afghanistan three times. He has earned numerous awards including two naval achievement medals, a unit achievement medal, combat action medal as well as many others. Upon discharge he pursued his education in Accounting at MiraCosta College in San Diego California. The President of the United States has awarded him for his volunteer service of providing 100 hours of community service in three months preparing free tax returns while taking a course load of 21 units. In 2011, he was awarded a $6000 scholarship and a paid internship for outstanding accounting students from Emerson. He also volunteers for Family First, a program to keep children off the streets and out of gangs and in school.

Currently Kenneth is going to California State University San Marcos where he is pursuing a double major in Accounting and Finance.

Ana Mesa Ana Maria Mesa was born in Medellin, Colombia and came to this country just 12 years ago. Ana is committed, dedicated, and eager to learn. She sees challenges as a way to become stronger. She has always been a person that cares for others and hopes to impact the lives of many individuals. Recently, she graduated from The Honors College at Miami Dade College with an Associate’s of Arts degree in Accounting. She is currently enrolled at Florida Atlantic University. She plans to earn a Bachelor’s Degree in Accounting, become a Certified Public Accountant, and obtain a Master’s Degree.

Diego Oropeza Diego is originally from Mexico; he moved to the US in the pursuit of higher education. He attends Yuba Community College and plans to transfer to Sacramento State. His goals are to become a CPA and to learn at least 2 more languages – especially Italian. Diego likes to play guitar and workout in his free time. He loves the Italian, Chinese, and Mexican cuisines. He enjoys going to college and learning new things every day. He is a very active person; currently, he works and goes to college. His priorities in life are his family and school, and he is working really hard to achieve his goals.

Michael Padilla Michael Padilla is from Napa, California and attends Napa Valley College. He is the second born of three children and the first member in his family to attend college. He has been active around his campus being part of the Business and Economics Club and now starting up the SSS Club to raise money for low income and first generation students like himself. He will be applying to different universities this fall, UCLA being his top choice. After transferring and getting a B.S. in Business or Economics he plans to go to law school and earn a law degree.

Abraham Rahmanizadeh Abraham Rahmanizadeh is originally from Pembroke Pines, Florida and has aspirations of working in corporate America as a CFO and eventually CEO of a major corporation. He currently attends Broward Community College and holds a 3.83 GPA, with intent to transfer. He participates in the PBL organization and has placed in the top tier at the district, state and national level. After earning his bachelor’s Abraham aspires to land a spot in an Ivy League Grad school program. Abraham also enjoys day-trading Forex with his paper-trading account so that he can manage his own retirement a few years down the road.

Angelina Roundfield Angelina Roundfield is a career minded individual that is focused on her education and pursuing her dreams. Angelina is originally from Michigan, and graduated this spring from Oakland Community College with an Associate’s Degree in Business Administration with a Concentration in Accounting.

Angelina will continue her education at the University of Michigan, majoring in Business Management and Behavioral Science. She has traveled to countries such as Tanzania and Kenya, with various mission and teaching programs.

Angelina’s goal in life is to make a positive difference in other’s lives, regardless of where they live.

Bryan Salas Bryan Salas is from Ozone Park, New York. He is 18 years old and has recently graduated from the Borough of Manhattan Community College with his Associates Degree in Applied Science. He is continuing his accounting education at Queens College and will earn a Bachelor’s Degree in two years.

His future goal is to sit for the Certified Public Accountant exam and be able to work as soon as possible with a good education to financially support his family.

Beatriz Salinas Beatriz Salinas was born in Mexico City, Mexico. She has a Law degree from the National Autonomous University of Mexico. She immigrated to the United States in 2000. She is currently a full time student at Westchester Community College in New York. Her major is in accounting. She is co-president of the accounting club and a tutor for the accounting department. She recently made the president’s list for the spring 2011 semester. She enjoys playing the guitar, working out and reading. She plans to transfer to a four year university and become a successful C.P.A. specializing in forensic accounting.

Diego Santaella Diego Santaella is originally from Caracas Venezuela. While in Venezuela, he attended the Universidad Central de Venezuela and earned a degree in computer science. To further his career, he pursued a telecommunication course, and he received a diploma in advanced networking and telecommunication data. Once he got married, he moved to the States, and he started a new life and began studying accounting at Durham Technical Community College. There, he received an Associate in Applied Science with concentration in Accounting with a 4.0 GPA.

Kiersa Sanders Kiersa Sanders is an accounting student at the University of Washington’s Foster School of Business. She transferred from Seattle Central Community College, where, while working to pay her tuition, she participated in Black Student Union, joined the Phi Theta Kappa honor society, and attained a 3.86 grade point average. Kiersa has received numerous awards and scholarships and is a match-ready INROADS internship candidate. She plans to complete her Bachelor’s in Accounting, earn a Master’s in Taxation, and obtain her Certified Public Accounting licensure in order to work as a tax accountant for a public accounting firm.

Menell Smith Menell Smith is part of the Salt and Folded Arm clans in her hometown of Naschitti, NM, which is located on the Navajo Reservation. She attends Navajo Technical College in Crownpoint, NM and is earning an Associate’s Degree in Accounting. Her future goal is to continue her education at New Mexico State University, where she will pursue a Bachelor’s Degree in Secondary Education and Education Administration, with hopes that she may help the education system on her reservation.

Carlis Smoot Tranquil, versatile and professional competence are descriptors of Carlis Smoot. She is at her best in a stimulating, creative, analytical environment that employs her strategic organizational skills and allows expression of ideas. Her study of accounting at DeKalb Technical College and continuing at the Stetson School of Business at Mercer University in Atlanta, Georgia will help secure her goal of mastering managerial accounting within a company that takes a balanced approach to leadership. Carlis believes life is a process of acquiring and sharing knowledge and admires innovators who have used their will and genius to further enhance the global community.

Carolina Veloz-Ignacio Carolina Veloz graduated this last June from Bronx Community College; She earned her Associate’s Degree in Business Administration with accounting option and now plans to transfer to Baruch College. Carolina is originally from the Dominican Republic, and began her studies at BCC as a CLIP student in 2007. Carolina believes that it is very important for her to fulfill the goal of being an accountant or working in the area of business accounting or economics. One of her future careers goals is to have her own business; alternatively she would like to work for a big accounting firm.

Another goal that she would like to accomplish is to have a master’s degree hanging on her living room wall, as recognition of the hard work she has done.

Olga Vialpando-Erivez As a Mexican woman of strong values, Olga Vialpando came to the US in 2006 looking for new ways to improve her future. Since then, she has done everything to reach her educational and personal goals. First of all, she overcame the language barrier by studying English and obtaining her high school diploma at The New America School. Then, after having to leave her education for a year Olga finally began working towards her Associates Degree in Business at the Community College of Aurora. Nowadays Olga is starting her third semester at CCA -- everyday closer to reach her dreams of becoming a successful woman.

Gilbert Villa Gilbert Villa was born and raised in Los Angeles, CA after his parents emigrated from Mexico before he was born. He has been able to maintain a high academic status in school, and give back to the community as an assistant coach for a youth soccer team. Gilbert is currently attending Santa Monica College. After briefly attending UCLA as Anthropology major, he soon realized his passion was not biological anthropology, but finance and business.

Keini Wilson Keini Wilson is a transfer student from American River College in Sacramento, CA and will be attending San Jose State University this fall. In Keini's three years at ARC he accumulated a GPA of 3.56 while starring on the school's football team. He loved the demands of completing the rigorous coursework of accounting and also maintaining an athletic career. Keini plans on graduating in 2 years with his degree in accounting and then studying for the CPA exam. After that he wants to enroll in a special sports MBA program at San Diego State University to reach his goal of having a front office position in sports.

2011 Program Counselors

Jacky Song Originally from China, Jacky Song has received his bachelor’s degree in international trade and economy in China with the National Scholarship awarded by the Chinese government. Jacky worked as a support analyst in Capgemini when he was a senior in college before he got the offer from University of Denver and decided to pursue his master degree in America.

Jacky is currently a full-time M.S. Accounting student. He also works as a graduate assistant in the Technology Service Department of Daniels College of Business and the VP-Finance and international student lead of Graduate Business Student Association. In his spare time, Jacky is an avid skier, soccer striker, tango dancer and music lover. Jacky also enjoys reading and traveling by which he can experience more of the world.

Grace Esworthy-Jones Prior to her transfer to the University of Denver, Grace Esworthy-Jones worked as a full-time customer service representative while attending community college in Abilene, TX. Grace currently works as a Teaching Assistant for a Microsoft Office and managerial accounting class at DU. Grace was recently accepted into DU’s dual degree program and anticipates graduating with her Masters of Accountancy in spring 2013. Since attending DU, Grace has found an unexpected passion for both learning and teaching and is looking forward to the challenges offered by public accounting.

"I thought this year’s ASDP went great! Our scholars came from all over the country and were from all walks of life. Each person was able to bring a unique perspective to this year’s events and I believe that this was an invaluable experience for all those involved. The importance of team work was one of the most important lessons in this year’s ASDP. Scholars were shown this through various team building exercises, lectures and a group case study. Although this lesson is not a new concept, it is nevertheless true and frequently undervalued. As a counselor, I too learned lessons about group work. By facilitating group projects and coordinating with administrative staff, sponsors, teachers, fellow counselors, and scholars I was able to gain many new insights about an old concept."

Diana Laureles Diana Laureles is a senior student majoring in accounting at the University of Denver. She transferred from a community college last year, which was a help to her as a counselor.

"I applied to this program because I know that I will gain extraordinary accounting, social and professional experience. When I first met the scholars, I was really impressed in what they have to offer. They were very competitive, but in a good way. They were fully engaged in every activity and showed sportsmanship. They worked hard especially for the case. They even stayed up very late to finalize their presentation. I’ve met amazing people, who will surely succeed in the future. By watching the scholars, I learned various ways to work as a group. I also had many networking and learning opportunities. The insights enabled me to get to know myself and others better. Overall, I learned a lot and had fun at the same time at the ASDP.”

Shing-Jiuan Liau-Root Shing-Jiuan Liau-Root came to America from Taiwan in 1998, to study Somatic Psychology and earned a Master’s in Dance Movement Therapy from Naropa University. In 2008 she married and has become a permanent resident of the United States. She is fluent in Mandarin Chinese and Taiwanese languages, as well as English. In 2009 she began her studies in accounting at Metro State College of Denver with the intention of obtaining her CPA. She is especially interested in auditing, cost accounting and fraud examination. She is in the top few percent of her class and is on the President’s Honor Roll of MSCD. Shing has also been a member of the Sigma Beta Delta Honor Society since 2010. She intends to complete her studies in the coming year and to find employment in international business.

Ben Floreck Prior to his pursuit of a bachelors and masters in Accountancy at the University of Denver, Ben obtained a bachelor of arts from Colorado State University in Fort Collins, Colorado. He worked in management for a few years and found that his love for business was hindered by his lack of education in accounting.

"Working with the ASDP was enjoyable and rewarding. Seeing students from around the country work together on the many challenges they faced during the week here at DU was remarkable. The growth from each individual at the program was seen by their presentations at the end of the week.

The program has opened the door of opportunity to many of these individuals and I look forward to hearing their success stories in the future.

"As a counselor I learned a lot about myself as well, my leadership style, what worked and did not work with the team, and how to accommodate to all the students equally throughout the week. My involvement with the program was great from the beginning. I was able to meet the students at the airport and ride with them on the bus to the University. I enjoyed talking with many of the students at the airport while we waited for the late arrivals and the charter bus to pick us up. Each day brought a new challenge to the group and I enjoyed being a part of the whole experience.”

Ruslan Garrey Ruslan lived in Russia before moving to the United States. At a young age he was drawn to accounting in the hopes that he could become an ethical contributor in the business world. Ruslan's aspiration is to work in a large accounting firm that works with international clients so that his work can have a truly global impact.

Outside of schoolwork, Ruslan spends much of his time on volunteering and staying active. He has been involved with a husky rescue for over five years, working there on a regular basis and fostering dogs. In addition he loves working with immigrant children because he can relate to them so closely.

Other activities include Junior Achievement, English as a Second Language, and college application assistance programs.
