Dear friends, Greetings from the University of Denver where we are welcoming the arrival of warmer Spring weather even as, in true Colorado-style, winter is sending a couple of final snow storms our way!

I am happy to report that recently, the Daniels faculty voted final approval to move ahead with a totally new, globalized MBA program that is scheduled to begin next year. The proposed design includes key elements of our soon to be retired IMBA program (including a required overseas consulting experience) as well as a totally new level of experiential learning. It will continue to reinforce our commitment to ethics and sustainability while offering substantial customizability for students.

At the same time, resources are being put in place to support a more robust global footprint for the College. For example, the Daniels Office of Globalization, skillfully launched and built over the past five years by Tom Dowd and Leslie Carter, has now been expanded to a four person office with IMBA alumni, Victoria Chen and myself joining the team. Together, we are dedicated and available to help with all aspects of globalization at Daniels.

At the commencement of the IMBA program, many students may assume that the most significant benefits of their Daniels education come from the direct investment of their professors and fellow students. While these investments cannot be taken for granted, it often becomes clear to IMBA students very early in their time at Daniels that professors and fellow students are only part of the formula that leads to a successful Daniels experience.

This edition of the International MBA Communiqué is dedicated for two purposes: recognizing and saying “Thank You” to a few of the many Daniels alumni and local community members who continue to invest in current IMBA students, and to highlight some of the key avenues for continued involvement in the Daniels community.

Study Abroad: Peru In March, two groups of Daniels students traveled to rural Peru.

While the groups had different projects and goals, all have reported that they had a fantastic experience that was a culmination of all they had learned in the classroom leading up to the trip.

The first group was a part of the GO Deutsche Bank class, which introduced the students to social entrepreneurship through due diligence and analysis of microfinance loan opportunities. The students acted as the “boots on the ground” for Deutsche Bank and evaluated whether or not the potential partners in Puno, Peru presented solid investment opportunities, from both a social and a financial perspective. This included researching an innovative new model, micro-leasing, that Deutsche Bank was unfamiliar with and decided to entrust the Daniels students with their initial research.

Students in the second group partnered with Casa Mantay, a nonprofit that houses, educates and empowers young mothers who have been victims of sexual violence to become socially and economically independent. Once the mothers are of age, they have the opportunity to work in the organization’s workshop, Taller Mantay, producing a variety of leather handbags and accessories.

The students proposed ways to streamline production, market to local and international customers, and develop efficient processes that would enable international commerce.

These international trips are integral to the academic experience of Daniels students and often cited as the most important and memorable aspect of their graduate education. Thank you to all of the faculty and partners that help make it possible!

Global Theory in Practice

GO:IMBA Consulting Training – Venture Quest The GO:IMBA travel course, Global Theory in Practice, is one of the most unique and valuable experiences students engage in while attending Daniels. Students come together for the opportunity to travel and understand global business practices in the context of international field locations, hands-on project work, and organizational management. This experience begins with an in depth course training by VentureQuest (VQ), a partner of the IMBA department and Office of Globalization. VQ, a management consulting firm, has worked with Fortune 500 companies, fastgrowing small businesses, top-tier universities, and government agencies worldwide. They focus on developing current and future leaders, implementing innovative management systems, and streaming entrepreneurial thinking throughout an organization to fuel growth.

Courtney and Jill developed the Consultant’s Toolbox, which introduces students to best consulting practices, with a focus on project management, high performing teams, and client relationships. Each student receives training with constructive feedback for project improvement, as well as out-ofthe-box strategies and additional client solutions.

VQ has worked with the Daniels College of Business since the mid-1990s. The Founder and CEO, Courtney Price, PhD, and the Director of Business Development and Global Programs, Jill Hansen (IMBA ’07), have worked with GO:IMBA students in developing and finalizing project strategy recommendations and creating

Live Consulting Experience Wild Blue Exports in China Daniels alumni can be found living and working all over the world, creating impact in a vast array of industries. This year, the students in the GO:IMBA course that travelled to China were able to work alongside David Hoven, the 2012 IMBA Outstanding Student of the Year and President of Wild Blue Exports, an international export management company operating in the Chinese market. With David’s significant offshore experience in distribution and export development, a student team was able to learn from him in a very complex business environment. David noted, “Working with the Global Management student team at DU helped us tremendously in carving out a strategic path forward. The research and strategy outcomes that were generated by the team were a cornerstone to the significant investment that we are making alongside one of our key clients in capturing the Chinese market.“ Although this was the first time Daniels students have worked with Wild Blue Exports, David’s enthusiasm regarding the team’s ability and contribution gives hope that Daniels students may have opportunity with him in China in the future.

Students have noted that the feedback from VQ enabled their teams to deliver professional and powerful presentations to the client. In addition, one of the client CEOs said that the Daniels IMBA students presented such compelling market analysis and strategies that his company has revisited their growth strategy and are implementing many of the students’ recommendations.

The significant impact of the student projects is also evidenced by the fact that several students have been offered employment with GO:IMBA consulting clients.

Alumni Connections

CHAIRMAN ENKHBOLD Chairman Enkhbold Zandaakhuu, (International MBA, 2004) one of Daniels most accomplished international alumni, hosted our GO:IMBA students at the Government House in Mongolia this year.

The Chairman has held a wide variety of political positions within the government of Mongolia: Speaker of Parliament, Secretary-General, and established member of the Parliament.

Through his considerable experience and vast network within Mongolia, Chairman Enkhbold was able to bring the Daniels students to a national economic and development forum, the Mongolian Economic Business Forum. This event serves as a forum for constructive discussion among Mongolia’s key stakeholders, including government, business, civil society and academia. It was an honor for the students at Daniels to be a part of such dynamic discussions aimed at the overall development of Mongolia. This would not have been possible without our alumni connection, Chairman Enkhbold.

JARGAL DAMBADARJAA Esteemed media personality and Daniels alumni, Jargal Dambadarjaa, MBA specialization in Finance, 2002, hosted our GO:IMBA students in Mongolia this past year. Jargal has worked as a Chief Executive in banking and financial institutions, public office, tourism and petroleum sectors. He has risen to fame in Mongolia as the host of Interview Defacto, which airs on three major TV channels. He also writes weekly columns for the daily newspaper that involve current Mongolia economic, political and social issues.

In April, 2015, Jargal visited the Daniels community as a guest speaker to address the topic “Lessons and Challenges of Mongolia’s Economic Transition.” At this event our current students and Daniels community benefited from his incredible insight and valuable experience as a leader for Mongolia.

How Can You Invest?

As can be seen through these examples, there are many valuable ways to invest in Daniels, either as an alumni or a local community member. Here are some powerful and tangible ways to continue to make your mark: Internships – Host an intern or connect students with internships, either internationally or in the United States.

P rojects – Reach out to the IMBA department with a proposal to facilitate a live consulting project through a GO:IMBA course or through student groups, such as Net Impact or the Daniels Consulting Firm.

S tudent Group Investment – Contact the International Business Association student group (udenver.iba@gmail.com) to discuss ways to partner with the groups through events, panel discussions and mentoring.

Contribute to a scholarship – See information on the back page about the Dave Hopkins International MBA Endowed Scholarship.

International Internship Experiences

JARED MARLING, INTERNSHIP IN FRANCE WITH NEW ANGLES Jared, along with his wife Julie (J.D. Candidate 2016, Sturm College of Law), had a fantastic summer in Paris, France, where they both completed internships from June to August. With the help of the IMBA office and Clara Kobuch, a Daniels alum (2011), Jared secured the role of Strategic Development Intern with New Angles.

New Angles is a small but growing sustainability and change management consultancy with offices in France, the UK and Switzerland, and they have been working for five years with executives of large multinationals in implementing sustainability improvements and organizational development.

Over the course of the summer, Jared completed a wide variety of projects for New Angles, while also studying French and enjoying Paris. The most significant project was the development and analysis of a sustainability framework for a large, Canadian multinational, to be used by corporate managers on a day-to-day basis and in conjunction with a series of New Angles workshops being completed for the company. Another primary project that Jared worked on throughout the summer, and remotely after returning to Denver, was New Angles’ B Corporation certification efforts. He was able to develop a strategy for New Angles in pursuing leadership in the burgeoning B Corporation movement in Europe and to move the company through the first major stages of obtaining certification.

Jared says that the most valuable benefit that he experienced through this internship was the practical knowledge around the B Corporation movement and exciting sustainability initiatives, such as Doughnut Economics and Sustainability Context. He also notes the tremendous professional and personal experience he gained through working in an international context with the experts and professionals at New Angles. Julie and Jared had an amazing adventure in Paris and look forward to travelling there again soon!

LAURA STEELE, INTERNSHIP IN MONGOLIA In the Summer of 2014, current IMBA student Laura Steele participated in a two month long internship in Mongolia. She worked under both Mr. Jargal Defacto, a political and economic columnist and commentator as well as an alumnus of the Daniels MBA program, and Dr. Oyun Sanjaasuren of the Ministry of Environment and Green Development.

During Laura’s internship, she was exposed to various types of assignments as she was given virtually unfettered access to the businesses of her supervisors. She edited Mr. Defacto’s three recently published books, an experience which provided her with great insight into Mongolia’s development, the many growing pains that the economy and political establishment have experienced with the influx of multinational mining companies, and the steep learning curve that Mongolia must scale in its transition to a market economy. In her work under Minister Oyun, Laura composed speeches for international conferences, conducted research into various issues facing the Ministry, and edited documents such as the Mongolia Climate Change Report and their new Green Development Policy.

Despite all of the fascinating work, Laura says that, “The greatest moments were when I had the opportunity to interact with the people, culture, and nature.” The one that really stands out was her visit to the Nadaam Festival. The festival consisted of the “Three Manly Sports”— wrestling, archery and horseback riding where jockeys as young as five years old displayed unbelievable skill. At the festival, Mongolians were celebrating their 2,223rd year since the establishment of the Empire!

Laura wishes to thank everyone that helped to make this unique, amazing opportunity a reality. Specifically, the Saunders family for the Saunders Global Scholarship, Myrna Ann Adkins, Leslie Carter, Dr. Doug Allen, Mr. Jargal Defacto and Dr. Oyun Sanjaasuren.

Current IMBA Students

TIM BUSH – OUTSTANDING IMBA STUDENT OF THE YEAR Tim Bush is a full-time IMBA student with a concentration in Finance who will graduate in June, 2015. During his time at Daniels, Tim served as President of the Daniels Consulting Firm (DCF) for the 2014–2015 academic year and was a Presentation and Communication Coach for his graduate assistant position. His elective coursework includes human capital, financial and capital budget forecasting, along with a trip to Peru for microfinance and agricultural co-op evaluation via Deutsche Bank. He was also a member of several case competition teams, including the Aspen Institute which placed fourth internationally and INTX which placed second nationally. In addition to the activities through Daniels, Tim earned his education in Viticulture from Washington State University during the past two years.

Prior to attending Daniels, Tim earned his B.S. in Atmospheric Science from the University of Kansas in 2004 and worked as a Broadcast Meteorologist right out of school, covering winter storms, tornado outbreaks and hurricanes. He then went to work for the world’s leading television weather graphics company, Weather Central, based in Madison, WI. During his time there, Tim fulfilled many roles and titles, including consultant, project and product manager, sales, sales engineer, trainer, customer service, marketing, host and spokesperson. He spent his first four years traveling domestically, working and consulting with on-air talent and management from small markets to network affiliates to international brands. He then moved into Global Sales where he was tasked to help expand the need for TV weather in foreign markets. Tim has conducted business in 16 different countries in areas that include Africa, Southeast Asia, the Middle East, Europe and the UK. With such a vast background, Tim is currently seeking employment opportunities in the media/entertainment, wine and aerospace industries.

Once grad school is complete, he is looking forward to returning to his hobbies, which include competing in triathlons, making wine, and volunteering with radio programming.

JEREMY DAY Jeremy Day is a second year student seeking his IMBA along with a Masters in International and Intercultural Communication. Day is pursuing both degrees so that he may gain the core skills necessary for operating an international organization while understanding the global framework for being an effective business leader abroad. Prior to attending Daniels, Day obtained his bachelors degree from the University of San Diego, where he worked in international education and studied in both Guadalajara, Mexico and Madrid, Spain. Following his graduation from the University of Denver, Day wishes to pursue a career in international business development and corporate social responsibility.

MARK MCCOY Mark McCoy is a second year IMBA student with a concentration in Development Economics. Mark obtained a BS in Business and Economics then spent four years living and working in three states and four different countries. His working experience includes: IT, tourism, not for profit and even the world of startup ventures, founding his own philanthropic tour company, Transparency Travel in 2013. At the University of Denver, Mark worked with Net Impact on a consulting project focused on the use of sustainable solar energy in East Africa, assists the Office of Globalization and the IMBA department and acts as the Director of Development for IBA, the International Business Association. After graduation, Mark looks forward to working for a dynamic company dedicated to innovative and sustainable practices.

MEGAN MUROBAYASHI Megan Murobayashi is a second year IMBA student who came to Daniels after obtaining her BA in International Relations at Creighton University. Her focus has been working in international development and managing her own social enterprise that offers fair trade products and partners with local communities in developing countries. Daniels has offered many opportunities to learn hard business skills relevant to her goals, study with a diverse student population, and expand her lens to prepare for a successful international career.

DINO ZEPCAN Dino Zepcan is a first year IMBA student at Daniels. He was born in Slavonski Brod, Croatia during a time of conflict in the Balkans. Due to conflict, he and his parents were relocated first to Slovenia for a short stay and eventually came to America where they reunited with family members in Denver.

Dino attended the University of Denver for his undergraduate studies and graduated with a BS in Biology. After graduating, Dino continued to pursue his academic work and decided to enroll in the IMBA program at Daniels. Dino credits his parents and his diverse upbringing for his unique ability to speak three different languages, adapt to different cultures and maintain the work ethic required to obtain both a Bachelors and Masters degree.

Daniels International MBA

Announcing the Dave Hopkins International MBA Endowed Scholarship Recently, six individuals combined their efforts through one of the most powerful avenues of investing in current IMBA students: the Dave Hopkins International MBA Endowed Scholarship. This fund is dedicated to increasing the financial scholarships for students enrolled in the international coursework offered at Daniels. These six individuals contributed a total of $75,000, which was then matched by the university for a total of $150,000.
