Dinner for Three a placesetting for three friends
Daniel Sabzghabaei (2018)
Notes Instrumentation and objects

Lighting Suggestions -Scene should open with blackout on the sides of the stage with a focus on the table and bassist. Just before the bassoonist and clarinet each enter with their singing wine glasses, the lights should come up slowly alerting the audience to their presence. -Sides of stage should blackout just as the bassoonist and clarinetist raise their glasses in toast, in unison with the trigger of harsh glass noises. -Last blackout occurs as the bassist slams the wine bottle on the table at the end.
Notes Table Setup Large transducer affixed to table

Placesetting
Clear Acrylic Case (w/ black back)
Glass postured on the edge of the table (may need washers placed underneath to facilitate shaking)
-Table may need to be prepared with stints in order to facilitate the movement of the glass falling off of the table from the transducer shaking, depending on the strength of the transducer, and the weight of the wine glass situated on the edge of the front of the table. -Depending on venue size and layout, a camera may be focused on the glass inside of the acrylic box, with the live feed being mirrored on a projector behind the bassist, so that the glass breaking at the end of the work is viewable to all, as it is the focal point of the scene. -Compression driver should be hooked up to an oscillator (or DAW) which is tuned to the exact resonant frequency of the glass within the acrylic box (ability to tune to 10ths of a hertz is key), as well as an amplifier of considerable strength. -The glass which shatters from resonance should be as thin as possible (any frequency); in my tests these specific glasses from Crate&Barrel worked best (item# 689-669).1

Notes Performance Notes
harp harmonics are a bass technique executed by using the thumb of each hand to touch harmonic nodes on one or two adjacent strings and plucking with the fingers
start at indicate notes/position and gliss upwards timbre crescendo: while getting louder, increase timbral complexity (growl/flz/multiphonic/etc.)
a nervous, unmetered articulation; for bass, shaky+uneven bow; for winds, intermittent+erratic tonguing
tremolo speeding up; here a harmonic tremolo getting faster
Compound artificial harmonics: finger+touch the indicated notes and bow exactly midway between the node and the fundamental, this doubles the interval. Here, producing a high D# two octaves above the touch point
Program Notes This scene for mixed trio, glasses, and electronics explores the ritual of the meal, sounds that accompany the pilgrimage, and the baggage these two facets of a dinner bring to the table. The bassist takes on the role of the host, with the bassoonist and clarinetist playing the invited guests. After an initial placesetting and invitation, the two guests make their way to the table for dinner from the edges of the stage, exploring not just their instruments but various sounds associated with glasses as well. The three share some banter and eventually the dinner begins, albeit tensely. After the meal, the two guests exit, leaving the host to clean up. “After a good dinner one can forgive anybody, even one’s own relations.” –from Oscar Wilde’s A Woman of No Importance
