The Old Village | Mt. Pleasant The Old Village was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1973 and is considered to be a 30 block area surrounded by the Charleston Harbor, Shem Creek, Royal Avenue, and McCants Drive.

Originally laid out in 1760 to resemble an English village, this area of Mount Pleasant was home to many successful plantations. In the 1770s, Andrew Hibben started his own ferry service to connect downtown Charleston, (at the time, Charles Towne) to this area of Mt Pleasant at Haddrellâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s Point. The oldest home in the Old Village is the home of an original founder of Mt Pleasant, Jacob Motte and is located at 111 Hibben Street. In 1791, President George Washington waited in what is now the Old Village to travel to the peninsula via ferry during his Southern Tour.

Charleston being considered as World Heritage Site Written by DRSIR agent Anne Edson Charleston is being considered as a UNESCO World Heritage Site and would be the first US city to have that honor. The UNESCO World Heritage Site list is the highest possible recognition for a historic site which includes more than 1,000 sites in about 160 countries. Only 22 are found in the United States.

Some of those include the Statue of Liberty, Independence Hall, Yosemite, and Grand Canyon.

There are many historic cities in Europe with the designation, but non in the US. Salzburg, Austria had only to show that the town had existing protections regarding its historic preservation. This should be the same situation in Charleston with our strong preservation societies and regulations on historic buildings in the downtown area.

If Charleston does become a World Heritage Site, it will hopefully attract a high-value cultural visitor who supports local businesses and nonprofits and spends more money than a typical tourist from the region.
