Welcome To The Horicon Marsh Area

On behalf of our communities, the staff at the Dodge County Pionier newspaper extends a warm welcome to you and your family as you visit the world-famous Horicon Marsh and the surrounding communities.

Whether you are visiting to see the changing colors in fall or when the snow blankets the ground, we hope to help inform you make the most of your stay.

While this has certainly been one of the most trying times to print this annual, free publication, there is still plenty to do safely in our neck of the marsh.

Speaking of, the Horicon Marsh Education and Visitor Center – located on Highway 28 between the cities of Horicon and Mayville –which hopes to reopen to the public in the near future, has miles of walking trails that wind through this country’s largest freshwater cattail marsh.

The Horicon National Wildlife Refuge, located off Highway Z, is also temporarily closed, but has ample walking trails and an accompanying auto tour, which can be enjoyed anytime.

If hiking in the fall, enjoy the colorful leaves as they turn from green to reds, yellows, and oranges. The leaves are gone in the winter, but the scenery is still breathtaking, and it is a little easier catching sight of the animals that live in the marsh as they forage for food. Remember to dress appopriately!

A bike and walking trail – The Gold Star Memorial Trail – connects the cities of Horicon and Mayville. Each community, from Lomira to Iron Ridge, has public parks with varying means of entertainment. More details inside!

There are several places to stay if you plan to spend more than a day in the area. Depending on the weather, you can choose a park, campground, bed & breakfast, motel or inn. Always call ahead to double-check each establishment’s availability.

Each community has dining establishments ranging from lighter fare to full course meals. As you page through the Visitor, you’ll find advertisements for a great selection of some of the restaurants our communities have to offer. If dining in, please be sure to bring and wear a mask!
