They have warm blood pass through their veins next to their legs They have a large layer of fat that heats them up they never stop moving they have a large shell that keeps their insides warm they stop cold blood from getting to their heart they have lived in cold water since the dinosaurs they often bask in the sun They're huge and weigh 1,000 pounds; their excess body fat is trapped in heats
They go to the warmer muddy bottom of ponds Instead of hibernating like most animals, they slow their metabolism this means their body processes slow down allowing them to need minimal amounts of oxygen and no food they sit at the bottom of ponds for months and don’t move in slightly warmer weather they bask on rocks

Mrs. Vidt, Clair Fawson, & Sierra Vista’s Guide Dogs By Erick Galvan Laurie Vidt: Ms. Vidt is a dedicated educator and K-5 resource specialist at Sierra Vista. She helps students with their math, English, reading/writing, vocabulary, and projects. She has expertise in understanding students with autism and strives to create a safe and inclusive classroom environment. “I find their way of thinking very interesting and I help make sure that they’re calm and they can work in the classroom.” Ms. Vidt is an important piece of this school because she brings general and special education together and fosters a sense of unity among upper and lower grades. Described as fun, intelligent, caring, and friendly, Vidt loves working with kids and raising puppies. Her greatest fear is letting a student down. Growing up around the Bay Area in Sunnyvale, Vidt has a passion for teaching that traces back to her experiences with her toy poodle when she was young. She firmly believes in the golden rule—treat others the way you would like to be treated. Inspired by Temple Grandin, a renowned author and advocate for autism, and motivated by the love shown by teachers toward her autistic nephew, her dedication to helping kids with different learning styles stems from her desire to make a positive impact. “I thought, well, if the teachers were there to help him, then I wanted to be that teacher to help other kids.” Outside the classroom, Ms. Vidt enjoys gardening, reading, learning about different people/cultures, and spending time with her daughter. Traveling to places she hasn’t been yet, like the British Isles, Australia, and New Zealand is on her bucket list.
Mrs. Vidt, Clair Fawson, & Sierra Vista’s Guide Dogs
The Dogs: Dogs like Elko, Koel, Kahu, and Herschel have played a significant role in creating a comforting atmosphere for students. Koel, currently in training as a therapy dog, holds a special connection as Kahu's mother. Interestingly, Koel's name is an anagram of Elko, the first therapy dog. Herschel is a black lab like Elko and is in training to be a guide dog for the blind. The dogs are present in the classroom to work with kids, helping them to calm down and learn. “Sometimes they don’t like reading to a grown-up but they’ll read to the dogs so that’s kinda cool.” Elko, a beloved therapy dog at Sierra Vista, left a lasting impact on students' hearts despite his unfortunate passing in October of 2020 due to cancer at ten years old. Ms. Vidt contributed to a memorial bench to commemorate his memory and the student council gave her the plaque in his honor. Attempts to plant a tree have been unsuccessful so far but there are still efforts to get another family to sponsor a tree dedicated to Elko. Recently, the dogs have shown up to Sierra Vista events like Trunk or Treat and last school year’s Sport-o-rama. Koel’s puppies that have been raised by Ms. Vidt over the summer have been placed under the care of Mrs. Bannon, Mr. and Mrs. Dinwiddie, the Fawson family (Bailey), and herself (Kahu).
Mrs. Vidt, Clair Fawson, & Sierra Vista’s Guide Dogs \
Claire Fawson: Claire, a seventh grader at Sierra Vista, has been part of the school since 1st grade. Introduced to the idea of working with guide dogs in 5th grade by Ms. Vidt, she signed up online and has been training Herschel since 6th grade. Claire is a quiet, helpful, and curious student who has a keen interest in zoology and hopes to travel to Africa someday. Outside her academic pursuits, she enjoys rollerblading, playing video games, and playing the trumpet. Claire Fawson's connection with Herschel goes beyond training; she has become comfortable and formed a bond with the black lab. Despite her fear of bears, Claire's interest in zoology and plans to attend college showcase her dedication to her passions. Excitement to co-raise Herschel was expressed when she first met him when her sister described him as so cute that she would cry over him. Claire's involvement in dog training and her interactions with Herschel reflect the closeknit and supportive community at Sierra Vista.
School Should Start Later: By: Isaac Hughes Schools should start later because it allows students to increase academic scores, reduce stress, and spend more time with family. High school students tend to go to bed late, causing them to get less sleep. Too much loss of sleep can and will cause insomnia, a sleep disorder that causes you to have a hard time falling asleep. Schools should start later because schools start before teens have enough time to get the recommended amount of sleep; in turn, bringing grades up and stress down. According to “Fairfax, Montgomery officials to share experience delaying school start times,” states that “Phillip Reed, a theater teacher at McLean High School in Fairfax County, said his students seem more focused and energized with the later start to the school day,” (Huang). This evidence supports the claim because it shows that people will improve academic scores and energy by increasing sleep time. In addition, the text states that people with more sleep typically score higher than others who sleep less. Considering everything, students who sleep more get better grades, reduce stress, and spend more time with family and friends. Although starting school earlier would be suitable for sports and student-athletes, the student comes before the athlete. School boards nationwide should implement this change for the students academically and physically.
More Snack Breaks! By Addison Diaz Why do all the younger grades get time to step out and have a snack but the older grades don’t? Shouldn't it be the same for all students, we have one time a day that we get to take a break and eat and we have to wait all day for it, how is that fair? what made the district and admin think as we get older we need less time to eat or just relax and get a break. I asked around how other people felt about not having a snack time and got a few answers. Fabiola Maravilla, an 8th grade student at Sierra Vista said, “ I feel upset and feel it is affecting my health and I think we should get snack time.” Another student Payton Johnson also in 8th grade said, “ As a teenager, we consume a lot of food, and waiting until the school day is already almost over to eat lunch is somewhat difficult because we are growing teenagers and we need the energy, a small period to eat could be beneficial.” I had our PE teacher Mr. A tell me his thoughts and this is what he said,“ I think there should be a time for eating but, it should be limited and put in categories and themes and have different things we can eat like having different months be different themes, make it fun”
More Snack Breaks! I also got the opinions of some 6th and 7th graders these were the responses I got. 7th grader Cara Hanft said, “My opinion on this is that sometimes I feel like we should have a little break time in between classes cause let's say we have a test and you need a break, it is better to have a break, and a snack before going on to the next class.” Another 7th grader Alaina Gillard stated “ I think most kids would enjoy it because I feel like halfway through the day a bunch of kids are already hungry between 3 period and 4th period, on Fridays when we do get second breakfast everyone happy about it so if we do get a snack time I think it would be good to have one all through the week” The two 6th graders I asked Jojo Farmer and Brent Evans had very different responses from each other. Jojo said “I would prefer a snack time because I need to eat, I don't think it would affect us too much it would just be like another passing period. Sometimes I think it would be very beneficial and sometimes I don’t” But Brent said “I don't think we should get a snack time because we have passing period already” Many people have very different opinions about this topic but overall most kids want a snack time and a period to relax. Should Sierra Vista have a snack time?
Popularity: WHY IT’S DANGEROUS By Aquisha Jovellano The idea of being popular has become a priority to a lot of people, having the idea of being likable can also cause harm. Like most things in life, popularity is more complicated than it looks. Some people are popular because they are likable (their peers like/trust them, and want to be with them). Others are popular because they somehow gain a certain status, and use that power to wield influence over others. It is often seen that their goals in school are having a good reputation and not necessarily academic goals – what they look like in other people's eyes becomes a priority and makes them do things just for the approval of other people. According to NPR, psychologists found that students who have a craving for social rewards can be more likely to make bad decisions, and the rush of being admired can be intoxicating thus leading them to crave more. The research also shows that popularity can harm mental health, grades, and behaviors and cause fights. Some people care about their image so much that it stresses them out and reduces the number of people they have good relationships with; keeping a good image is a full-time job for some teenagers. I’ve asked a few students in Sierra Vista K-8, and most have replied that popularity can be dangerous because it can change their behavior. Some said that their self-esteem was boosted and they took advantage of people liking them. Others said that they can make wrong decisions and take the wrong path while being famous, like being friends with other popular people who have a bad influence on them. Another opinion I've received is that popularity can also restrict a person’s privacy, for example, their private life, what they do, and pretty much every detail about them. When a person is popular there are most likely chances a lot of people are gonna know what’s going on in her life and most likely target people that have bad intentions.

SHORT STORIES
The Speed of Light
By: Enrico Portugal
Donald’s car zoomed, almost touching Joe’s car. They approached the bend, and prepared to drift. “You won’t beat me this time,” Donald muttered. 1 hour ago… Donald was at the sushi place near the stadium. His mind was full of thoughts. Most were about winning the annual Drift Tournament. The Drift Tournament was a competition of the best racers from San Francisco. They all aspired to one day win the grand prize. Whoever wins the grand prize would become fifty thousand dollars richer. Donald tried multiple times to win, but he would always lose. Last year, the grand prize was given to a man named Joe, a great racer. Donald was seconds away from beating Joe, but Joe was just too fast. Donald had made up his mind about this year. Joe was going to lose. “Earth to Donald!” someone said. Donald snapped back to reality. He looked to his right, and his brother, Kevin, was there. “Excited?” Kevin asked. “Were you daydreaming again?” “Yeah, whatever,” Donald scoffed. He checked his watch and gasped. “What is it?” “We need to go now, or we’ll never make it in time!” They raced out of the restaurant and got in the car. Then, they drove to the stadium. When they arrived, they immediately went through security and were let through. They went to the starting area where all the cars were. “No matter what happens out there, just know we are supporting you,” Kevin said. “All right, thanks,” Donald replied. He was suiting up for the event, his heart racing with excitement. “Ready to lose, punk?” Donald spun around, and Joe was there. Joe had a black jumpsuit on. It had painted skulls on it, with spikes on the shoulder pads.
“Not really. Let’s settle this beef on the road,” Donald shot back. Joe growled and moved closer to him. Donald readied himself for a fight, but it never came. Security guards grabbed Joe and held him down. They then proceeded to drag him away back to his starting area. “I got this, I got this,” Donald reassured himself. “All right ladies and gentlemen, it’s time to start the Annual… Drift Tournament!” Donald tuned the noise out. He had listened to this for five years straight. They read from a script and said the same thing each year. “On your marks, get set, GO!” The cars sped out of the starting area, and they were ready for action. Donald steadied himself. He passed other cars, and he was in fourth place right off the bat. He zoomed past the car in third place and saw that the car in first was Joe. Donald was filled with adrenaline, and he was determined. There was a bend ahead, and he drifted. The car in front of him blew out a tire, and Donald passed him. Joe looked at his rear mirror and saw that Donald was catching up. Joe upped his game, and Donald didn’t see any openings for him to get through. They drifted and accelerated, but Donald didn’t give up. He was hopeful for a win. At the last bend, Donald accelerated more than he should’ve, a risky decision. They prepared to drift. “You won’t beat me this time.” They reached the bend and drifted. The turn was very dragged out, meaning they had to drift for a while. While they were drifting, Joe’s car lost its grip on the track, and he spun out. “Yes!” Donald yelled. He finished the drift and sped through the straightaway. He crossed the finish line, meaning he won. Donald stepped out of the car. “LET’S GO!” Donald heard Kevin yell. He looked behind him and saw Kevin hurtling toward him. Kevin put his arms out wide and hugged Donald. “I-I did it,” Donald said. “I-I finally won! “Yes, brother. You won.” They walked towards the podium, where Donald was awarded the trophy and the whopping prize of fifty thousand dollars. Joe had a sour look on his face, probably because when he spun out, he got last place. Donald couldn’t believe it. He won. He was proud of himself for never giving up.
The End.

For me, I like chess because it teaches me how to think critically, improve my intelligence, and make new friends. The chess club is a great community of people. I’ve seen peers like Jayden Hartman grow in his chess abilities. When asked about why he chose to join chess club, he said, “he liked to play chess and wanted to improve to beating others [at the game].” Another great player is Suraj Rattan. When asked a similar question, he replied, “he used to play chess with his dad and noticed the chess club in 5th grade, so he joined to win and have fun.” His friends also joined him in it, growing the club even further. Currently, we have so many players that we have to meet in the MPR on Fridays

Based on the results, we found out that most people who did the survey play games late at night. We also found that people are half and half on whether gaming affects people's sleep. What we learned from this survey is that people like to play shooter games the most. And we also learned that people play late at night because they like it too.

There are a total of 12 zodiac signs. Within August and December, there are 4. Those 4 are Virgo, Libra, Scorpio and, Sagittarius. The Western zodiac originated in Babylonian astrology and was later influenced by the Hellenistic culture. Each sign was named after a constellation the sun annually moved through while crossing the sky. This observation is emphasized in the simplified and popular sun sign astrology.
Some traits of Sagittarius are they are very Frank, courageous, and generous, the Sagittarius-born is one of a kind. Most of them are prone to remain in their own worlds, deeply involved in culture, intellectual and creative pursuits, travel, and even self-praise. They love freedom and tend to be self-dependent and are extremely confident. Some of these strong qualities, however, sometimes make them tactless, which hurts others. Frank as they are, they pride themselves on being able to speak the truth as it is. However, this attitude could hurt people, and lead to embarrassing situations. It is said that their lucky day is Thursday and their lucky numbers are 3, 12, 21, and 30. For Virgos, some facts about them and traits are that they are Kind, honest, analytical, smart, hardworking, determined, stubborn, crazy, cool, calm, collected, visionary, intellectually enquiring, methodical and logical, and studious. Virgos like animals, beauty, eating healthy, and orderliness. They are more interested in giving than receiving. They get very happy when people agree with you. Virgo can tirelessly watch millions of times your favorite movies and TV shows. On the other hand, a Scorpio's personality is very clever, rebellious, stubborn, witty, sarcastic, independent, spontaneous, visionary, intelligent, and adventurous. Their biggest fears consist of being judged or being betrayed. Libras are fair, balanced, quick to admit, crazy, clever, loyal, smooth negotiators, extremely observant, and, romantic.3 things libras are good at are staying neutral, and stylish, and sniffing out unwanted things. Things libras hate are unnecessary conflicts. Also, they hate texting first, it makes them feel like they are annoying. They can’t stand selfish and inconsiderate people.
History Of Sierra Vista! Written by Andre Failano and Jesse Carrizales The school Sierra Vista was opened June, 2016. It was reopened for K-8, and the original elementary school was closed down due to budget cuts. Sierra Vista’s education used to be a K-6 grade level but in August 2018, it was expanded to a K-8, with more classrooms for science and math.
The multipurpose room was later constructed to be a gym and lunchroom while the front office was expanded to become more accessible for all students of all abilities. Sierra Vista also rebuilt the library and media center for kids that need after school hours for any work that needs to be completed. Sierra Vista’s school reaches a total of 750 kids that are on campus through K-8.
The school used to have a really great principal named Mrs. Bozzini who was here when the school officially re-opened. This year, we have a new principal, Kara Dinwiddie, who is doing an awesome job. The school for the middle school side teaches kids to get prepared for high school and college and to teach kids to be responsible through P.A.W.S. Personally, I like that the teachers are often very helpful when needed and support all of the students the best that they can. Special shout out to Mrs. Russel for being really nice to help with social thinking and give great advice. Also, the school band performs lots of songs that are fantastic to listen to thanks to the hard work of Mr. Spruill. Bonus: Our PTC sells delicious ice cream every Thursday!!
Hispanic Appreciation Month
Hispanic Heritage Month is a monthlong celebration of Hispanic and Latino history and culture. While we celebrate Hispanic and Latino communities beyond this month, from September 15 to October 15 we give extra recognition to the many contributions made to the history and culture of the United States, including important advocacy work, vibrant art, popular and traditional foods, and much more.
During Hispanic Heritage Month, many cities will host concerts, parades, runs, festivals, art exhibits, and more in celebration. You can also celebrate by watching awards shows that honor the many accomplishments of Latinas and Latinos and their contributions to our nation's history.
The observation started in 1968 as Hispanic Heritage Week under President Lyndon Johnson and was expanded by President Ronald Reagan in 1988 to cover 30 days starting on September 15 and ending on October 15. The reasoning behind choosing these specific 31 days is that it coincides with the Independence Day celebrations of several Latin American countries.
