INTER-CITY: SOLARPUNK URBANISM Individual Project Context: Academic

Despite the disastrous ef fects of the 2005 flooding of the Bow River, the current urban form of the city of Calgar y is still illequipped to receive the river’s next inevitable flood. INTER-CITY speculates on the potential of using landscape design as a driver for flood mitigation, urban form, and urban agriculture through the re-design of a large parcel of the city at approximately 7.5 km 2 . The performative qualities of plants were used as an

By using landscape as a foundational design driver, the Bow River is transformed into an intriguing, dynamic , and temporal element of the city; rather than an obstacle or a force of destruction.

INTERFACE INTERFACE is a hybrid of an automated vertical gardening facility run b y robots , g rocer y pick up center, education space, and various public amenities for visitors to use. The project explores the movement of goods through cities and how cities act as infrastructural framework for massive re positories and transport relationships. Cities are so entrenched in functioning for the movement of goods that civilization must develop and g row around its infrastructure, and the infrastructures which are birthed from these systems are often relegated to the edges of the city. The structures produced as points of connection, waiting, and destination can be characterized as “non-spaces” – places that discourage humans from settling in or feeling comfortable.

These landsca pes are ultimatel y non-human, and with the increasing automation of industr y, could potentiall y overrun cities in the future. By mixing human prog rams with nonhuman prog rams , we can combat a potentiall y parasitic relationship as well as provide spaces for self-reflection and self-improvement that will be needed for humans when the g reat automation comes and time is freed from work.

Furthermore, incorporating circular processes into these buildings will encourage overla p and integ ration between human and non-human players.

SHIFTING PERSPECTIVES: CENTRE FOR A LT E R N AT E HISTORIES

CITY HALL

The process of documenting histor y is inherentl y biased, as there are often stories that are overlooked and excluded from of ficial histor y. Therefore, there is no way to completel y and objectivel y understand the past. Shifting Perspectives is a research and exhibition space located in Calgar y’s Ol ympic Plaza that encourages its users to shift their perspectives and preconceived notions of what deser ves to included in traditional histor y. A series of interactive, moving panels are scattered throughout the site of Ol ympic Plaza; leading pedestrians down into the social plazas that surround the building.

The moving panels also continue into the exhibition spaces where the y can be populated b y research material; encouraging visitors to confront others’ perspectives along with their own. The building’s research facilities will be specificall y tailored to researchers at the Calgar y Institute for the Humanities specializing in areas of histor y that are new, emerging, or unusual. Researchers will also partner with professionals from creative disciplines to aid in their process of curating engaging exhibits. W hile research and curation is something that is not typicall y revealed to the museum-goer, the resource and research space is adjacent and visible to the public areas of the building, encouraging visitors to engage with the researchers and create a trul y collaborative environment.

GREEN ALLEY The alle ywa ys of a city are often unsightl y, neglected places in the urban environment. How can we transform spaces such as these into vibrant, tactile landsca pes that can function beneficiall y for the city’s need to manage the elements , as well as act as changing landsca pes for pla y?

In the “Green Alle y” a pproach, the lanewa y is transformed into a space which still accomodates the alle ywa y’s necessar y functions as a thoroughfare and garbage collection site, while simulataneousl y mitigating the alle ywa y’s poor drainage through wa y of a modular, porous paving system. The design incor porates curiouslooking Ecological Areas into the alle y alcoves , as the rigid square pavers g raduall y mor ph into g roves of organic boulders. These areas will foster native plant g rowth and pla y. In this wa y, a unique cafe culture is nurtured in the most unlikel y of urban spaces.

FLOAT Float is an installation that was proposed for the Edmonton Zoo’s Festival of Light.

It is an otherworldy experience that makes use of environmentall y friendl y materials and energ y-ef ficient lighting methods. The installation is an immersive field of swaying, jell yfish-like lamps that are 3D-printed with glow-in-the-dark biodeg radable plastic. The network of organic forms was parametricall y generated and is suspended from above.

Motion activated LED lights illuminate the installation, and flicker on and of f while vistors wander around a labr yinth of strange, glowing creatures. The installation of Float is meant to be easil y de ployable and disassembled, and will require minimal maintenance during the festival. Glow in the dark materials and motion activated LED’s eliminate the need for timers or switches. If an LED loses power, it can be easil y re placed as the lights are removeable and fit snugl y in the lamps.

The ULTRA jour nal is the University of Calgar y’s annual student-r un publication that showcases work from the school’s faculties of Architecture, Landsca pe Architecture, and Planning.

A g ra phic identity was formulated for the publication that pla ys of f the bold and dramatic styles seen in propagandic posters , meant to speak to the drama and g ravity of what transpired in the year 2020. Several colors for the final color palette were pla yfull y pulled from colors used in the Zoom video conferencing a pp - a platform that our architectural education now exists within in this new online world.

PAST GRAPHIC EXPLORATIONS: A rigorous exploration of g ra phical styles was undertaken preceding the ince ption of ULTRA 5’s g ra phic identity. Conce pts of solidity, dimensionality, g radients , and the integ ration of motifs into typog ra phy were employed to achieve dif ferent aesthetics.
