OBJECTIVE

I am an Architectural Graduate – completing my Master of Architecture (Professional) as of 2023 – looking to join a greater community of Architects, and contribute to your professional practice through collaboration, and a drive to learn and engage with how buildings are made.

My current experience in Architecture has centred around installation design. Having built two projects during my degree, my area of expertise extends beyond architectural design principles into the logistical steps to progressing drawings and models into built form:

This built installation is about fusing fine arts and architectural creative practice – two disciplines distanced by their approaches to representation between drawing, modelling, and building.

More Information

Contemporary architects gravitate towards making methods that can prescribe both qualitative and quantitative information of an envisioned ‘final’ built form. Meanwhile, an artist may respond by looking for differentiating qualities between drawing and building. Finding qualities independent to representation, and articulating on these differences, exposes and expands the unseen qualities of a domestic architectural built form.

‘Genealogy of the Pacific’’ explores architecture as a complex organism. To start off, the design starts in a microscopic ‘DNA’ strand. Like DNA, this unit replicates itself - in this case, 867 times - to create a complex structure. Architecturally, the DNA is designed as modular ‘bricks’; one common architectonic/material in everyday building technology. Furthermore, this project draws upon pattern-making traditions found extensively in Pacific culture, which enriches the project with meaningful forms, narratives, and mythologies. The resulting pattern is highly pixelated and variable; reinforcing the folly as a series of fundamental units like DNA strands that lead to diverse results.

The design seeks a quality solution for Point Chevalier’s church community. The brief is situated on 126 Point Chevalier Road. Within this constrained site, the Client required a diverse programme that includes the local church, opshop, councelling, apartment housing, and outdoor community facilities.

The design includes practical consideration for a ‘live’ Client’s budgetary and functional needs, whilst still delivering a quality proposal that emphasises Welcome, Community, Food, and Shelter. The resulting design complies with height to boundary regulations as outlined by the Auckland Unitary Plan, while also considering a three-stage construction timeline for economic purposes.

A meaningful Heart of the City should encourage an active relationship between people and the primordial entities of the land. The ripples of the Waihorotiu stream have suggested that Central Auckland’s primordial entity, Horotiu has been present throughout history. ‘Daylighting’ Horotiu requires an understanding of how the physical geography of Central Auckland has evolved. Conceived from a psycho-geographical recording of these events, we witness Horotiu rising back into Tamaki Makaurau. This forms the main Urban Room. A place where people can gather, discuss, and mediate on how Auckland should be in the presence of Horotiu. These spaces empower Horotiu; informing through its story the evolution of Auckland and advocating a more meaningful discussion on how we co-exist with the land.

Advanced Design 2 Supervisor | Dorita Hannah

Delirious Auckland seeks to generate an antidote to the mundane cosmopolis. Utilising the Ceiling as a Canvas for Fantasy; the plane where “heavenly skies” and extra-terranean can be imagined, visualised, and materialised into physical space. The ceiling’s monstrous scale entertains the terribilita for the beholder; the overwhelming presence of people traversing 10s of metres above the street accentuate the scale of the contemporary cosmopolis. A canvas is generated, and the Inter-terranean cosmopolis is materialised into an antidote that excites the Auckland streetscape. A fantastical cosmos that hypnotises the street dweller to look up, and behold the vast, activated cosmos above the street.

Alongside architectural endeavours, I also have well developed my abilities in artistic media. Spanning pen and pencil drawings, to watercolour and oil paints; from fast sketches to refined works; from precise to warped subject matter. To explore these various modes of expression has had a significant impact on how I perceive architectural qualities, whether it be light, shade, form, materiality, colour, and most recently, the assemblage of time and first-person experience within the image.
