THE WEDDING CAKE What is the inspiration/theme for your wedding cake?

Our wedding cake inspiration/theme is the peacock, with its bold, royal, yet calming colours and presence.

How does the theme represent you both as a couple?

The peacock theme represents us as a couple because we love when things are elegant and natural with just the right amount of boldness.

If you can offer advice to other couples when it comes to the wedding cake, what would you tell them?

We’d say that once you have decided on the amount of guests you would like your cake to serve, go in with a completely open mind! Angela’s artistry is so diverse, you may end up changing your minds during the consultation.

We ended up falling for a square cake (as opposed to the round classic) with many tiers that start off with a huge base of two Styrofoam tiers and tower up into narrow edible tiers. So, our cake looks very regal, yet we still honoured our serving size. That was all thanks to the incredible ideas an d suggestions provided at Opulent Cake Co. We can’t be any more pleased and excited!

Let’s take a look at three crucial aspects to keep in mind when you’re in the market for the perfect cake.

CONSIDER THE BUDGET AND WHAT TO EXPECT WITH IT It’s very important to have and stick to a budget when it comes to planning a wedding. For the wedding cake, the couple should have a realistic one in mind. Once they find a style/design they love, they should meet with various cake decorators and compare prices and portfolios. Many couples may only think of the budget and pick a cake decorator based solely on the price.

However, they will likely end up with something rather upsetting. If they want a professionally designed cake, they should consider and understand what they are paying for. It’s comparable to buying custom made shoes, for example.

You are paying the shoemaker for their expert skills and design for a quality product.

SET UP CONSULTATIONS AND SAMPLE THE PRODUCT Make sure to set up meetings and sample the cakes before putting down a deposit. It’s unfortunate when a cake looks beautiful but it’s dry or the icing is overly sweet that it hurts your teeth! The couple is paying a large amount of money for the product, so it is very important

to get your money’s worth. It really is a shame to get all that cake and have it all half eaten. Have fun sampling and picking the tastiest cake. Most cake decorators will offer complimentary cake tasting so you don’t have to break your budget doing so.

REMEMBER TO THINK IN PERSPECTIVE A lot of couples I sit down with really stress over what their relatives and friends prefer when it comes to the cake. While it is nice to be considerate to them as they all will be eating the cake, I always tell my clients that it is their wedding day and it should be about what they want. They may worry

about what flavour to settle on, so in that case, I tell them it is very possible to have different ones for each tier they get. Don’t hesitate to ask your cake decorator questions, they will offer their professional advice/solutions to make sure you get what you want and that you are happy with the product.

When did you start baking?

How did you find your passion?

I started baking after culinary school, so about five years ago.

I actually stumbled into baking, it started off as a friend liking my pictures of cupcakes I posted on Facebook. She asked if I would consider baking for her sister’s bridal shower. I said “sure, I’d be happy to!” and the journey started from there. I realized that I could apply my love for art with food, and that’s when I got excited.

What interests you about weddings?

The fact that two people can come to realization that they can’t be without each other and take the chance to build a life and grow together.

How did Opulent Cake Co come to be?

Where is Opulent Cake Co headed?

When I realized that I couldn’t see myself happier doing anything else. I wanted to take this craft and skill into the best possible scenario for myself. That’s when Opulent Cake Company came to mind.

I hope it is headed in the direction of growth and smart ideas.

I hope the skills and techniques to create the cakes show progress. I don’t know for certain what will happen, but I did wonder about teaching later on.

What is one of the most unusual requests you’ve been asked by a client?

Do you ever think about your wedding? How do you envision your wedding desserts?

A star wars themed wedding cake, in the shape of the huge ship, whatever it’s called. It actually ties with the half Batman and white pearly wedding cake request.

I do wonder about my possible, future wedding. I already know I will personally be creating the sweets table and the cake.

They will be a reflection of the things my partner and I enjoy and want to share with our loved ones, of course with pretty colours and wonderful flavours!

What is your favourite wedding dessert trend?

Decorated sugar cookies. Buttery, crumbly, delicately sweet sugar cookies with beautiful intricate designs in royal icing.

Where do you get your inspiration?

Flowers, books, paintings, fabric, floor tiles, the list goes on!
