MAMORI ONSEN

Bathing and Woman’s centre in Hiroshima, Japan

Site

A bathing project in the centre of Hiroshima on a small L-shaped site. Situated on the corner of a busy street across the bridge from the Hiroshima memorial park and near the Hondori shopping street. It is also right by the river having that existing connection to water.

Brief

“Hadakana Tsukiai” is the equalisation within nudity. I designed with this principle in mind and coupled with the fact bathing has deep roots in japanese culture. Especially with the historical importance of taboos and the role women played within bathing. My proposal looks to challenge that and create a bathing and safe space for women, looking to tackle taboos around domestic violence by offering a space to seek professional help and encourage openness about the topic.

As the user group are vulnerable users the apporach and feeling of safety around the building was really important. The polycarbonate and timber create a glowing building whilst the bottom floor is concrete and stone that give the impression of stability and safety. The entrance sequence was carefully thought out using principles of passive surveillance and restricted views into the building to create the sense of safety.

Thresholds

The sequence of movement through the building was carefully considered as the atmosphere experienced by the users take them through a journey and reflects the level of privacy and openness. Externally the groundfloor is protective through its concrete and stone exterior, whilst above is cladded with polycarbonate to allow privacy whilst allowing light.

Facade

The draping polycarbonate imitates a waterfall, inspired by the japanese tradition of ‘Misogi’ which is to pass under a waterfall to cleanse.

Healing Spaces

The social space has lots of open space with areas of gathering to allow more social open conversations and group sessions whilst the therapy spaces upstairs are designed for 1 on 1 personal professional help

The bathing area mimics a traditional japanese natural onsen rather than a sento. To get light into the space and not allow people to see in a lightwell is used. It also allows the connection to greenery mimicing the connection the upperfloors have with the Hiroshima memorial park.

The experience throughout the building was carefully thought out as each floor has a different function and is dependant on the users needs for the building. The bathing is very vulnerable and exposed but leans into the japanese idea of ‘equality in nudity’ so its dark and experiential with glimpses of light from the thin windows. The lightness and oppenness of the floors indicate to the users the privacy and function of the spaces too.

NARRATIVE HUB RETROFIT

Podcasting and Community Learning space centred around the reintroduction of ex-offenders from HMS Wakefield

Challeinging the narrative of the existing building. My proposal is to create Wakefield’s first mediateque library and exhibitio that focuses on creating awareness and opportunity for ex-offenders to rehabilitate through learning and community classes. This public building helps break down those societal barriers and helps get them back in control of their lives. Focusing on distrupting the existing building due to its historical connections to slavery and the prison.

The prison and halfway house that lies on the other side of the traintracks next to the site inspired the brief. It was due to its lack of facilities and physical seperation from the rest of Wakefield that inspired the brief and justified the need for a new community hub that would help bridge the gap between the 2 sides of wakefield.

My proposal consists of large copper elements that puncture the existing building conveys the idea of puncturing and distrupting the norm, allowing stigmas to be lifted and the ex-offenders to more easily integrate back into society.

Figuring out a 1:20 construction detail helped create a better understanding of the construction. The large copper cladded elements puncture the building disrupting the uniformity of the timber, creating views and site lines through the building. The timber facade elements convey the ideas of disruption by breaking the uniformaty. The depth and sculptural nature of the timber has an almost dynamic feeling, distorting and playing with the visual connections. It also acts as passive solar shading.

The central space is a key space within the proposal as not only is the main exhibition and listening space but it also was the main large entertainment room of the existing building. However unlike the existing building my proposal is open to the public and creates for a dynamic fluid space. When the drapes are down thhey become seating for the listening space, but when they are lifted they become dampeners for the exhibition. The undulations of the fabric representing the sounds of the space.

The building is connected through the red copper elements as I wanted the experience of the building to be as though you are above the existing building experiencing it not how they intended it. This is to futher celebrate the sense of breaking down the existing stereotypes and stigmas and breaking down walls that have been created by them.

KELHAM YARD

Housing project and Sashimono carpentry workshops in Kelham, Sheffield to revitalise BAME communities

Kelham yard was a housing project that required 3 different typologies and a work aspect. Mine specifically looked to tackle the problem of the very low BAME community that lived in the Kelham area, trying to attract more people and give them a space to celebrate their cultural and traditional crafts. I focused on japanese and south-east asian woodworking to base the space, however they are adaptable and open. The ground floor has a large open coutyrad that acts as a throughway and invites people in to explore and learn about the craft that is happening in the various workshops thatspill out into the public realm.

MIX-MEDIA

Showcasing my passion for model-making, hand drawings and photography

These models are from various other projects or iterations that I am proud of. I found that model making is the best way to understand massing, volume, and details and has helped me develop my architecture academically. The relationship of a building exterior space and its function drove the developemnt of my dissertation that explored 2 streets in tokyo and analysed the differences and similarities between the contemporary and emergent streetscape.
