Heute Deutschland! Morgen die Welt! – The Steven Statharos Collection of German WWII thematic cartography The collection comprises 152 items, including some 3504 mapsheets, and approximately 6800 pages of photographs compiled for the Third Reich between 1938 and 1944. In order to make sense of the collection, the works have been organized by theatre of war: Beginning with the annexation of the Sudetenland and the invasion of Poland (items 1-5), before “Fall Gelb” (Case Yellow), the German invasion of the Low Countries (items 18-23) and, eventually, France (items 6-17). The collection covers the mapping of “The Northern Atlantic Wall” – the German defensive positions in Scandinavia (items 24-32); as well as the Alps – including The Brenner Pass, where Hitler and Mussolini met in 1940 (items 33-36); The Mediterranean (items 37-46); The Balkans (items 102-113); The British Isles, with Operation Sea Lion (items 76-101); The North African Campaign (items 46-56); and “Operation Exporter” in the Middle East (items 58-66). The collection also details Operation Barbarossa – Hitler’s ill-fated attempt to capture Moscow (items 114-136); and the lesser known incursions onto American soil: Operations Pastorius and Elster (items 150-152). The majority of the maps in the collection were published for use by the German Army under the ordinance of a permanent General Staff, Generalstab des Heers, but the war in the air and at sea is also represented with maps for the Luftwaffe (items 67-76) and the Kriegsmarine (items 151-152). Heute Deutschland! Morgen die Welt! (Germany today! Tomorrow the world!) was a popular slogan among the Nazis during their rise to power. Its origin is the lyric “Denn heute gehört uns Deutschland/Und morgen die ganze Welt” – «Today, Germany belongs to us/And tomorrow the entire world», from the 1932 song Es zittern die morschen Knochen («The Frail Bones Tremble») written by Hans Baumann that became the official marching song of the Reichsarbeitsdienst (Reich Labor Service) in 1935. This was loosely translated into English as Today Germany, Tomorrow the World, implying that the Nazis intended to take over the world. The scale of this ambition is visible in the detail and efficiency of the cartography of the Third Reich, and was made explicit with a series of maps related to Germany’s projected global empire (see items 137-149). The collector, Steven Statharos, is the grandson of a reluctant prison guard and his prisoner, who met in a Gestapo jail in northern Greece in 1941. The collector’s mother was the prisoner of, and tortured by, Benjamin Locher, Pastor of the Evangelic Church of the Rhineland, and chief of the Geheime Feld-Polizei (GFP – popularly known as the Gestapo) in Greece.
Introduction
The “relationship between warfare and cartography was more intimate in the twentieth century than in any previous era” (Peter Collier, Warfare and Cartography, in ‘The History of Cartography, Volume 6: Cartography in the Twentieth Century’, page 1696). For centuries, most national mapping agencies have been branches of the military, but while necessity is the mother of all invention, not all military cartography has been entirely innovative: why re-invent the wheel, when the Ordnance Survey, or Michelin have created some of the most detailed topographical and route maps of Great Britain and Western Europe for you? Not surprisingly, therefore, the earliest maps published by the German Army for use in the quest for Empire, were large, topographical, with a scale of 1:100 000, and derivative, borrowing from a number of, sometimes credited, sources. It is in the increasing use of extensive over-printing that the maps express a new and sometimes unique, for the time, obsession: highlighting a very clear road classification, sometimes also identifying industrial and other installations of military interest. In the margins, columns of text give a local insight, and an expression of intent, often in order of priority. Soon these maps were supplemented by a systematic series of thematic maps, each focusing on a very particular aspect of the target area; marked and keyed with unambiguous symbols, for geology, soil type, groundcover, road and rail networks, telecommunications, population density, ethnicity, political affiliation, military infrastructure, troop movements, water supply, and so on. The maps are printed on a range of scales to support planning at a strategic, tactical and combat level. “Military thematic maps had been introduced during World War I, but during World War II there was an enormous increase in their range and type. Germany pioneered the extensive production of thematic maps. A military geological service had been re-established in 1937, and the geologists were trained in the light of World War I experiences. Some four hundred military geologists were employed, far more than in either the U.S. or the British army” (Collier, page 1778). The more than 600 separate ‘Militärgeographische Einzelangaben’ mapsheets, representing about 70 % of the Abteilung fur Kriegskarten und Vermessungswesen production to 1944, were published from 1938. They were issued almost simultaneously with the German army’s relentless march across Europe and North Africa, with a ruthless efficiency and method. The collection begins with a small but not at all insignificant book of town plans for Czechoslovakia, and culminates in the ‘Landerweise Zusammenstellung aller Karten und Mil-Geo-Arbeiten’, which includes 130 folding index maps, encompassing almost the entire world.
Provenance
Each of the items in this collection carries the printed warning: “Nur fur den Dienstgebauch!” – For Official Use Only. Many were also designated “GEHEIM”, SECRET. However, very few of the maps in this collection have seen any active use: one or two have been designated “CAPTURED MAP”; some have been annotated, in a German hand, as having been officially received; some bear the official ink stamp of the Third Reich, an eagle clutching by its talons a swastika within a wreath; or other stamps of official departments, like the Kriegsmarine, and not surprisingly, the “Mil. Geo. A[bteilung] Bibliothek”. Many more bear the ink stamps of other contemporary German libraries: the Bundesarchiv Militarchiv Amtsdrucksachen, the Zentrale Kartensammlung. At the end of WWII, the Berlin Document Center (BDC), was created to centralize the collection of documents from the Third Reich, which were needed in preparation for the Nuremberg Trials. Some were rescued by the US Counter Intelligence Corps (CIC) Agents at a paper mill in Friemann, Germany, where they had been shipped by German officials to be pulped. Others were shipped to “the safety of a deep potash mineshaft in Heringen (Werra), in Hessen, Germany. A group of US Army soldiers found these lost records of the Third Reich. When removed from the Heringen mine, those records that dealt with the earth sciences, terrain analysis, military geology and other geological matters were sent to the USGS (US Geological Survey)” (R. Lee Hadden, ‘The Heringen Collection of the US Geological Survey, Reston, Virginia). Other documents were forwarded to more relevant American institutions, such as the “Army Map Service Map Library” in Washington, DC. A large proportion of the Militargeographische packets in this collection bear the ink stamp of the Heringen Collection, the subsequent ink stamps of the AMSML, and the library labels of the Pentagon library, who deaccessioned much of their map archive after 9/11.
Glossary
The majority of the maps in this collection were published for use by the German Army under the ordinance of a permanent General Staff. Generalstab des Heers. The department, or Abteilung, that actually produced the maps was the Abteilung fur Kriegskarten und Vermessungswesen, sometimes abbreviated to Gen St d H Abt f Kr u Verm. Special editions of maps of foreign countries are often described as Sonderausgaben Militargeographische packets, or dossiers, sometimes abbreviated to Mil,- Geo.-, gather together a myriad of information and present it in a specifically designed wallet or slipcase, as: a military intelligence book, Textheft; military intelligence photographic book, Bildheft; a town directory, Ortschaftsverzeichnis; a book of town and city plans, Stadtdurchfahrtplane; and a variety of maps, Karte/s. Over time, the content of the Militargeographische changed, and were issued in new editions, or Auflage. Sometimes more than one Militargeographische was issued for a large geographical area, as MAPPE. For example, for the British Isles, Grossbritannien, three MAPPE, were issued: - MAPPE A : a collection of maps mostly related to England, but also to Scotland and Ireland. - MAPPE B : large-scale city plan of London. - MAPPE C : maps and photographs of the coastline. Kartes may be essentially the same map, but over-printed, or reduced to show very specific information. Such as, topography, geology, groundcover, road and rail networks, telecommunications, population density, ethnicity, political affiliation, military infrastructure, and so on. Detailed records of all the Militargeographische, MAPPE, and Kartes were published periodically in a portfolio of indices and key-maps, as Planheft. The Abteilung responsible for producing maps useful to the German Airforce, Luftwaffe, was the Oberbefhlshaver der Luftwaffe. They published information for pilots in Orientierungsheft.

The German army invaded Belgium and the Netherlands on the same day: 10th May, 1940. The attacks were part of a larger strategy, known as “Fall Gelb” (Case Yellow), to conquer France, which they attacked at the same time. German forces hoped to bypass the main line of French defense at their eastern border by going through the Belgium and the Netherlands. After only five days of battle, the Netherlands capitulated to Germany, on the 15th of May. Belgium, Luxembourg and parts of France soon followed. By the summer of 1940, almost all of Western Europe was under German control. Belgium 18. ‘Planheft Belgien. 2. Ausgabe. Vom 27. Januar 1944’. German forces invaded Norway and Denmark in April of 1940, giving them harbours from which to patrol the North Atlantic, and access to the iron ore mines of Sweden. The country remained occupied by Germany until the capitulation of May 1945. VI GENERALSTAB DES HEERES ABTEILUNG FUR KRIEGSKARTEN UND VERMESSUNGSWESEN ‘Planheft’ and a collection of ‘Militargeographische’ packets for the Straits of Gibraltar, Italy, Spain and Portugal, and Malta. Publication Berlin, 12th December 1940 - 12th August 1944.
After the fall of France in June of 1940, German forces had control of French ports in the Bay of Biscay, providing them with U-Boat bases from which they could pursue objectives in the Mediterranean and the Atlantic Ocean. Successful navigation of the Straits of Gibraltar was vital to all these aims. Gibraltar remained a staunchly defended British fortress and harbour, throughout the war: a strategic naval and military outpost. During WWII, Malta, along with Gibraltar, was at the centre of Britain’s strategic naval position: it had been the base of the Mediterranean fleet for nearly 150 years. As a result, the island came under relentless attack from the air, by both Luftwaffe and the Italian Air Force. From December 1941 to December 1942 German bombers lay siege to Malta, targeting the island and supply convoys. Nevertheless, the Allies were able to launch successful amphibious landings to North Africa (November 1942), Sicily ( July 1943) and mainland Italy (September 1943), from their base in Malta.
The North African Campaign
VII GENERALSTAB DES HEERES ABTEILUNG FUR KRIEGSKARTEN UND VERMESSUNGSWESEN The ‘Planheft’ and a collection of ‘Militargeographische’ packets for Northeast Africa, Libya, Algeria, Morocco, Dakar, Tunisia, and Egypt. Publication Berlin, 28th November, 1940 – 5th January 1944.
Campaigns waged in North Africa from 1940 to 1943, centred around which power would control the Suez Canal, and therefore the supply of oil from the Middleast. From 1934, Italy had controlled what is now modern Libya and Ethiopia in Africa. Once Italy had aligned itself with the Axis powers, shortly before German troops entered Paris in June of 1940, a naval conflict in the Mediterranean became a certainty, and a land battle in North Africa, likely. The North African campaign included: the Western Desert Campaign, or Desert War, fought in the Libyan and Egyptian deserts; Operation Torch, fought in Vichy French governed Algeria and Morocco; and the Tunisia Campaign, in Vichy governed Tunisia. By 1941, the British army succeeded in pushing the Italian troops back across the EgyptianLibyan border. Germany responded by sending Rommel (“The Desert Fox”), and what became known as the Afrika Korps, to push the Allies east, allowing Libya’s borders to expand to cover most of the Western Desert.

The War in the Air
IX
DER OBERBEFEHLSHAVER DER LUFTWAFFE A collection of ‘Orientierungsheft’ for the Mediterranean, North Africa and the Middle-east. Publication Berlin, June 1940 - March 1942.
The Luftwaffe first flexed their aerial prowess during the Spanish Civil War of 1936-1939: testing new aircraft and techniques. By the start of WWII German air power was supreme: quickly achieving victory in Poland in the east, and France in the west. However, it was defeated in the Battle of Britain in 1940, and failed to halt the Allied convoys sent to relieve Malta in 1941-1942. The Luftwaffe played a supporting role to the German army’s Afrika Korps in their Mediterranean and North African campaigns, briefly turning the tide of the Italian defeats in Greece and Egypt in late 1940. 67. ‘Europa u. GENERALSTAB DES HEERES ABTEILUNG FUR KRIEGSKARTEN UND VERMESSUNGSWESEN The ‘Planheft’ and a collection of ‘Militargeographische’ packets for Great Britain and London. Publication Berlin, 1st August, 1940 – 15th May, 1942.
British Isles On the 16th of July, 1940, roughly two weeks before the publication of the first document in this collection, Hitler issued a directive, ordering preparations for an invasion of Great Britain, and the aerial Battle of Britain began shortly thereafter, with the Luftwaffe attacking on RAF bases, shipping convoys, ports, factories and infrastructure; heavily defended by the RAF. From early September, German tactics shifted to the concentrated bombing of London, and other cities (Liverpool, Hull, Bristol, Cardiff, Clydebank, Portsmouth, Plymouth, Southampton, Swansea, Birmingham, Belfast, Coventry, Glasgow, Manchester and Sheffield), now known as the Blitz. Oxford and Cambridge were spared, apparently because Hitler wished to preserve their architecture. The Luftwaffe failed to gain the upper hand and the threat of a German invasion of Britain receded in December of 1940. 77. ‘Planhelft Grossbritannien’. The German War on America, WWII
XIV OBERKOMMANDOS DER WEHRMACHT Documents and maps related to the German War on America. Publication Leipzig, Bibliographisches Institut AG, 1.1.1942.
150. ‘Schlag nach uber die Vereinigten Staaten von Amerika. 1942. Heft 60. Tornisterschriften des Oberkommandos der Wehrmacht, Abt. Inland.’ 2 volumes: text and maps. Text: 8vo., 32 pages. Original buff printed paper wrappers, stapled as issued. 2 maps printed on one sheet: ‘Die Vereinigten Staaten von Amerika (USA); and ‘Mittelamerikanische Staaten’, folding into self-wrappers. Dimensions: 210 by 150mm. (8.25 by 6 inches). Volume 60 in a series of separately published maps published by the Oberkommandos der Wehmacht for the use of soldiers. During World War I, the Germans had led a successful attack on the munitions warehouses of Black Tom Island, near Jersey City, when saboteurs set off an explosion on July 30th, 1916, which registered 5.5 on the Richter scale, killing five people, “jostling the Brooklyn Bridge, shattering plate-glass windows six miles away and shaking building foundations in five states” (NYTimes online). Twenty-six years later, once the US had officially entered WWII, after the Japanese attack on Pearl Harbour, the Germans tried again. Operation Pastorius, planned for June of 1942, and carried out by longtime German residents of the US, included among its targets Hell Gate Bridge in New York and Pennsylvania Station in Newark, New Jersey. Four saboteurs came ashore at Amagansett, Long Island, on the night of June 12th, 1942, brought there by U-Boat 202. One of their number was discovered, and the munitions and other equipment he had buried in the dunes, seized. When the same operative gave himself up to the FBI the mission came to nothing. In the wake of the failure of Operation Pastorius, two more German spies were brought to Maine by U-Boat 1230, as part of Operation Elster, to gather intelligence on American manufacturing and technology. They too, were discovered by the FBI. 151. ‘Atlantischer Ozean Ostkuste von Nordamerica Block Island bis New York. Masstab auf 40o 45’ Breite 1: 225 000 Hohen und Tiefen in Metern 1916.’ Lithographed chart, heightened with original hand-colour. Dimensions: 765 by 1110mm. (30 by 43.75 inches); 650 by 1050mm to the neatline. Detailed German hydrographical chart (number 455, Klasse IV) of Long Island, with the coastlines of New York extending inland to Cold Spring on the Hudson River; south to Point Pleasant, New Jersey; east to Pt. Judith in Rhode Island. With an inset map of Raritan Bay and part of Staten Island. Lighthouses, harbor lights, and channel lights are heightened by hand in yellow wash; relief shown by spot heights, form lines and hachures; depths shown by soundings and isolines. First issued by the Herausgegeben von Oberkommando der Kriegsmarine, Berlin, in September of 1916, with new editions published in 1923, and 1940; this example was reissued in March of 1943. The Kreigsmarine, the German wartime equivalent of the British Admiralty, and the U.S. Geographical Survey produced a comprehensive series of maps of the coastlines of the world. Rare: we have been able to trace only one institutional example; that of the Beinecke Library, Yale. Provenance: With the ink stamp of the Third Reich upper left.
152. ‘Atlantischer Ozean Ostkuste von Nord- America Golf von Maine. Masstab auf 42o 50’ Breite 1: 650 000 Hohen und Tiefen in Metern 1912.’ Lithographed chart, heightened with original hand-colour. Dimensions: 970 by 790mm. (38.25 by 31 inches). Detailed German hydrographical chart (number 448, Klasse IV) of the Gulf of Maine, extending northeast as far as New Brunswick and the Cape Spencer lighthouse, and southwest to Martha’s Vineyard; the western coastline of Nova Scotia appears in the east. Lighthouses, harbor lights, and channel lights are heightened by hand in yellow wash; relief shown by spot heights, form lines and hachures; depths shown by soundings and isolines. First issued by the Herausgegeben von Oberkommando der Kriegsmarine, Berlin, in 1912, with new editions published in 1927, 1934, 1941, 1942, and 1943; this example was reissued in March of 1943, and bears a red label, warning users of the map that the inland waterways have not been updated. The Kreigsmarine, the German wartime equivalent of the British Admiralty, and the U.S. Geographical Survey produced a comprehensive series of maps of the coastlines of the world. This particular map of the northeastern coast of North America appears to be particularly rare, with only a later 1958 edition appearing at the Univerity of Wisconsin-Milwaukee library. The United States had been at undeclared war with Germany, as a participant in the Battle of the Atlantic, since October 1941, when it contributed Naval ships to protect the Allies Icelandic Convoys in the Atlantic Ocean. However, four days after the Japanese attack on Pearl Harbour, the United States officially declared war on Germany, on December 11th, 1941. During World War II, the Germans made two, ultimately unsuccessful, incursions onto American soil. When the same operative gave himself up to the FBI, the mission came to nothing. In the wake of the failure of Operation Pastorius, two more German spies were landed at Frenchman Bay in the Gulf Maine by U-Boat 1230, as part of Operation Elster, purportedly to gather intelligence on the Manhattan Project, to sabotage it, and gather what other information they could on shipyards, airplane factories, and rocket-testing facilities. They too, were discovered by the FBI. Rare: no examples appear in auction records; only one institutional example, a later edition, 1958, at Wisconsin. Provenance: With the ink stamp of the Third Reich and another official stamp, upper left.
