Accustom House is a Community and Immigration Centre that explores resilient, alternative approaches to immigration and asylum-seeking.

The project reinterprets local vernacular architecture, traditions and features of the peripheral landscape to create an efficient, financially and environmentally sustainable programme as a riposte to the recent policies implemented by the government such as the Rwanda Plan.

The intervention takes place on the existing Customs House and Immigration Office site in Gravesend, Kent.

Y3S2- ACCUSTOM HOUSE Community and Immigration Centre Gravesend

The existing outbuildings are retrofitted and connected by a structural system to create spaces for living, leisure, education, work and social interaction.

The architecture draws from local vernacular archetypes such as the Oast house and cruck frame, weaving foreign and local communities into a synergic scheme.

The Kentish Oast house is reinterpreted as heat distrubution system, acting as a pottery kiln, kitchen oven, hop kiln and heat source for the building.

The studio production team was managed directly by myself.

Y3S1- PERIPHERY ABANDON Journey from Gravesend to Cliffe Fort

Periphery Abandon is an exploration of architectural interventions that seek to re-engage the Gravesend and London areas with the peripheral landscape of the Thames Estuary. The aim is to interpret personal moments within the peripheral landscape and translate them into pavilions that offer opportunities for exploration, leisure, and education.

The layered landscape of the Thames Estuary offers a rich blend of nature and human activity through time.

From the remnants of the past such as Shornemead Fort, The Hans Egede Wreck, Cliffe Fort, and concrete antitank blocks from WW2, to the Empire Windrush docking at Tilbury Docks in 1948, sand extracting jetties, nature reserves, and feral horses.

The proposed pavilions within the peripheral landscape are designed to enhance the existing trail along the southern Thames bank. They offer opportunities for visitors to interact with and engage with the richly layered experience of the area.

Y3S1- PERIPHERY ABANDON Journey from Gravesend to Cliffe Fort

Model of pavilions near RSPB Cliffe Pools and Cliffe Fort, these provide views of the main landscape features both vertically and horizontally.

They offer spaces for birdwatching, learning, and eyelevel views of the mighty ships drifting on the Thames Estuary.

The pavilions celebrate the richness of the peripheral landscape experience from Gravesend to Cliffe.

Y3S1- VERNACULAR JOINERY Practical Making and Testing of Detail Models

Material study exploring vernacular timber joinery.

Radically challenging the use of wood as a sustainable solution for joining structural elements.

Joint models were made and tested at 1:2, 1:5, and 1:10 scale, scrutinized for feasibility, sustainability, craftsmanship, and cost-effectiveness.

JULY-SEPTEMBER 2020- LEMNARIE Firewood Storage and Woodshop

Commissioned by my father as an addition to our homestead in Satu Mare, Romania, ‘Lemnarie’ is a regional term describing an outbuilding used for firewood drying, storage and woodworking.

We honored the woodworking culture in Maramures County, where Satu Mare is located, by using traditional joinery methods and constructing the building ourselves.

Locally sourced oak timber was used to emphasize the building’s permanence and its significant role in the homestead.

Y2S2- AQUAPONICS LIVING Urban Farm and Student Accomodation

N Aquaponics Living is a self-sufficient urban farm, restaurant, and student accommodation centered around the process of aquaponics.

The scheme’s synergic ecologies enables it to operate on both macro and micro scales between natural and man-made exchange systems.

These ecolofies revolve around exchanges, these range from restaurant services for reduced living costs to nutrient exchanges in the aquaponics process.

The scheme places an emphasis on food ethics, promoting transparency and awareness around the realities of consuming meat. For instance, diners can witness the sacrifice of the animal that goes into their meal, highlighting the often-overlooked reality of our consumerist-driven society.

Preparation and Cooking 1. Vegetables are cut julienne and separated on a flat plate or into individual containers 2. Each type of vegetable is cooked through frying in a wok pan using vegetable, sunflower or sesame oil and placed back into their designated container/space.

3. Meat is cut into strips and placed in soy sauce, minced ginger, minced garlic, sesame oil and sugar marinade.

4. Meat is marinated for about an hour in a refrigirator and cooked for 3-5 minutes on high flame in a wok pan.

5. The gochujang sauce is prepared by adding one table spoon of: sesame oil, sugar, water, roasted sesame seeds, apple cider vinegar and minced garlic then mixed together until the sauce is homogenous.WW

Assembly and Serving Techniques 1. Oven is preheated at 220 C for 10 minutes. The dolsot is placed in the oven and heated for 10 minutes. Dolsot is taken out and oiled to gain non-stick propreties.

2. One cup of boiled rice is placed in the middle of the dolsot.

3. On top of the rice, the cooked vegetables are placed separately in a circular pattern, each separated from one another with little interval spacing. Meat is usually placed in the middle.

4. A fired egg is placed right in the middle of the bowl over the meat.

5. The bibimbap sauce made from gochujang paste is added over the contents of the dolsot by the consumer based on personal preferance.

6. The bowl is then mixed by the consumer before serving.

Folkestone foodshack is a deployable street food stall designed around the process of cooking/ preparing Bibimbap.

The roof structure is designed so that individual pannels can be unmounted to be more conveniently transported if needed.

This feature also allows for the roof to be lowered or retracted depending on weather conditions, operated via pullies in a similar manner to that of sails.

The main ambition for the clients and their young family was to extend the home and future proof their home, ensuring that their living conditions are improved by the works.

For the planning strategy we separated the loft conversion from the rear and first floor extension via permitted development rights, and include the rear and first floor extension as a householder application.

The rear extension is covered by a saw tooth roof that allows natural light to penetrate into the interior living space added by the extension, while the large sliding door and oriel window opening frame the lush backagrden which is full of decorative trees.

The external envelope of the added volumes are cladded in a white render and contrasting burned timber cladding.

This material pallet reinterprets the ‘mock Tudor ‘ elements present on the external details of multiple homes along the road, ensuring that the new extension blends within the context of the neighbourhood.
