CORNUCOPIA CENTER The Cornucopia Center is an incubator space fostering new businesses that focus on just equitable and sustainable foods. The goal is to adopt new ideas within the space and connect entrepreneurs with industry experts. With the site being in Eastern Market and on the Dequindre Cut access to the building though all different types of mobility became a key design driver along with securing spaces that could be utilized by everyone in the neighborhood. The task of this project was to develop a sustainable building using innovative and new design ideas. The timber structure is constructed through wood dowel joinery to minimize the carbon footprint of the construction of the building. The site implements other sustainable ideals through storm water management, maximizing solar gain and implementing passive heat strategies This project was in collaboration with fellow UDM students Ryan Lemke and Jake Lampi

The main design drivers mobility, community response and sustainability. Have been implemented based on the direct context. The overall style of the building is influenced by the context, mimicking the style of the 1840’s iconic sheds interiors. With the nearest exits off the Dequindre Cut 10 min away it is important to establish a clear connection between the sheds and bike trail.

Implementing rammed earth on the north facade is a sustainable strategy that has become iconic to this project. It not only creates an aesthetic quality of but is apart of a passive strategy for heating and cooling, absorbing interior heat gains and releases the energy absorption at night.

The once high intensity industrial area, is now scarce of the former industry, thus making the zoning outdated. The vacancy of the area is also very high which gives a leaves residents with a rundown feel to the entire site. The greenery goes hand in hand with poor zoning and abundant vacancy. There is little to no vegetation in the heart of the site.

To begin our analysis of the Barton-McFarland neighborhood, as a group, we toured the area by bike to understand how the current environment is perceived through pedestrian travel as we intend to reshape the community to be primarily traveled by pedestrian modes of travel. To improve pedestrian travel, paired with the Joe Louis Greenway, a newly proposed Greenbelt connects Joy Road and Fullerton Avenue through a comprehensive linear park system full of recreational and leisure activities.

MARKET

An active day at the market where the local artisans and farmers are selling their products to the neighborhood. Aside from the services it offers, it allows for the community to create relationship with one another. The market area will feature 10’ by 10’ huts for local vendors from the neighborhood and other areas of Detroit to sell their products and goods on the weekend. Renders done by Bushra Fawaz

PLAYGROUND The children’s Park near the neighborhood encourages outdoor play and social interaction with other children. The vegetation surrounding the children’s park keeps them connected to the nature of the site. Renders done by Bushra Fawaz

FUNCTION DIAGRAM The park within the plot will offer play areas, walking paths, all connected by the Joe Louis greenway that runs along Oakman Blvd. and through the center of the site connecting to paths that lead to the neighborhoods and communities. The screens along the path act as a buffer from Jeffrey’s Road from plot two all the way to plot one, each spaced 6 ft from each other.

THE MODEL The 4’ x 10’ site model of the urban design project in Detroit is made up of various materials and a range of fabrication methods. In order to complete the reproduction of the site and the context around it a scale of 1:1000 was determined from the beginning. Later materials were chosen as a group. Existing context and buildings are fiberboards painted white, and the site limits are fiberboard as well, but unpainted. The procedure to fabricate the previous portion was done in auto cad and taken to a CNC machine to make precise incisions and align everything perfectly. Grey proposed buildings were 3-D printed after being modeled in Rhino3d via each group for their respective plot. Orange public space areas were laser cut and aligned in auto cad along with the greenbelt and green way. Organization of the studio model was done by Jacob Lampi

This school focuses on the collaboration between artist and viewer. It provides the ability to present the artiest work in any way that can explain their creative process. The double height studios allow for imaginative presentations within the space as well as workshops, artistic experiments, and public events. The design of the program within a quite simple industrial framework helps create studios that can easily adapt to the various activities and the use of everyday life at the school. The studios are connected through glass panels, so students can see others work process as well as their final production. The glass panels also face the hallway so exhibitions can be presented at any time.

RESIDENTIAL AND COMMERCIAL DEVELOPMENT The city of Pittsburgh is constantly moving so the relationship between its people and transition from one area to another is vital. This building focuses on people’s interaction with the site as they transition through the space. The area allows one to feel grounded as well as high up, with the base of the buildings at your feet as well as the tree canopies. The city steps connect nearby residents to transit and other amenities, making them an asset for the city’s circulation. Alleyways and staircases that fill the interstitial space between buildings and parks create a void between the solid structures. The building provides a larger transitional space that allows for the community to gather.

I 30 I PITTSBURGH PROJECT

WRAPPED MATERIALS

The roofs of the building wrap the sides to create a fluid motion. This concept of “wrapping” the material around corners is repeated with the walls facing the interior courtyard.

LANDSCAPING

Many of the trees within the site are placed at various levels of elevation to create the illusion of being among the tree canopies while also feeling grounded by the base of the building.

12 x 12 GRID

This building is organized on a 12 x 12 grid. The concept behind the grid was to ensure the building had uniformity similar to the rest of the area. The building lines up with the adjacent roofs and windows insuring it fits within its context.

I 34 I PITTSBURGH PROJECT

BUILDING FORM The form of the building mimics the stepping pattern that is both consistent in the roofs and steps within the area. The form was made by starting with a 12x12 block module that filled the site. Then slowly removing and adding blocks to create a contrast between solid and void.

ARCH FOR KIDS CITY OF WINDSOR ARCHITECTURE CLASS This class taught students how to explore both 2d and 3d space. Each week the class was assigned a goal to accomplish through hands on crafts and activities while learning basic concepts of architectural design and building. Students were tasked with redesigning the community park and recreation center that the class took place in. This allows student to utilize spaces in their own back yard. Each week kids were tasked with designing one aspect of a park and understanding its benefits to the adjacent communities. Students used different materials each week to design these park aspects such as wood blocks, clay, Lego, cardboard, drawing/drafting and other recycled materials.

Photography is a creative medium that is both exciting and challenging. An art form that is easily accessible and remarkably powerful; photography can inspire us into action, convey a story, be witness to joy or tragedy, or simply call our attention to something interesting. Whether it is a spectacular slot canyon, the urban environment, an emotionally charged moment, or a commonplace object, an image speaks to its viewer and provokes a reaction within them.

S A N T PAU H O S P I TA L Today this “city within the city”, as the hospital complex is also called, is one of the most important and most beautiful complexes of modernism. The clinic complex was declared a World Heritage Site by UNESCO in 1997 due to its “architectural uniqueness and artistic beauty”. Composed of 12 pavilions connected through long underground galleries within its large green space, Sant Pau is the largest complex built in Art Nouveau style. Domènech began the project with exhaustive research, including a study of no fewer than 234 hospitals around the world. His first challenge was organizing the site.

SA N T PAU

On one hand, recent medical studies strongly advocated the

benefits of natural light and ventilation and on the other hand, the best modern hospitals featured a series of smaller buildings rather than a single massive structure. Domènech’s solution created underground service tunnels to connect different buildings, opening the grounds up to restorative landscaping. With gardens as the hospital’s physical and metaphorical core, Domènech shifted the site’s main axis from the urban grid by 45 degrees in order to maximize light and ventilation, as well as to set the grounds apart from the streets surrounding. Patient ‘pavilions’ and nursing areas occupied the center, surrounded by specialized facilities and areas for research. On the perimeter, generalized services could be accessed independently from the street as well as from the hospital grounds.

S AG R A DA FA M I L I A One of Barcelona’s most iconic symbols, the Sagrada Familia is the most visited landmark in all of Spain. Considered to be a great example of modernist architecture designed by architect Antoni Gaudi. The Basilica de la Sagrada Familia, more commonly referred to as the Sagrada Familia, is a Roman Catholic minor basilica located in Barcelona. The story of this still-under-construction masterpiece began all the way back in 1874 when a local organization began campaigning for the construction of a church honoring the Holy Family. After a couple of years of planning and drawings, the church’s cornerstone was officially laid on 19th March 1882. This 19thcentury church, which is still incomplete, is an architectural marvel and a UNESCO World Heritage site.

PA R K G Ü E L L Gaudi planned and directed the construction of the park from 1900 to 1914 for Eusebi Guell as a residential park intended for sixty single-family residences. The project, however, was unsuccessful, and the park became city property in 1923. Though never fully completed, it remains one of Gaudi’s most colorful and playful works. Gaudi let’s loose his imagination. He shaped nature into colonnades, archways, and covered galleries with well-camouflaged artificial structures.
