The 2024 Danforth Annual Juried Exhibition

On view June 22–September 22, 2024
It is summertime in New England, and that means we are welcoming the Juried Exhibition back to the galleries. As we reflect on the exhibitions from the past year, we are reminded how exciting it is to show work by artists practicing throughout the region. The Juried Exhibition magnifies that offering by bringing you many artists at once and giving you the opportunity to discover what is new right now.
The Danforth Annual Juried Exhibition aligns with our mission by presenting a novel perspective each year, showcasing innovative work, and introducing new artists. Once again, we had a panel of three jurors, representing the region, the university, and the Danforth. This year’s
jurors are Marie Craig, Co-Founder of Fountain Street Art Gallery in Boston, Keri Straka, Professor of Art at FSU, and Noelle Fournier, Director of the Danforth Art School. The works in this exhibition represent a wide range of media and processes. There is something to inspire everyone.
The Juried Exhibition is a snapshot of the work being produced in New England, and the Danforth is privileged to host it. We are grateful to all the artists who submitted to the exhibition and contribute to the region’s rich cultural landscape.
This exhibition is generously sponsored by Middlesex Savings Bank.
“As a juror for the Danforth Annual Juried Exhibition 2024, I was faced with the delightful yet challenging task of selecting from an abundance of strong submissions. The resulting exhibition, with its diverse array of media spanning from painting to sculpture, photography to mixed media, installation to abstract and representational works, showcases the remarkable talent of our regional artists. Excellence is the common theme here, as each artwork invites viewers to delve into its meaning and form a personal connection. It was clear that each artist had poured their heart and soul into their work, offering us a profound gift of expression and insight. Together with my colleagues Noelle Fournier and Keri Straka, I believe we have curated a collection that beautifully represents the vibrant creativity of our community.”
Marie Craig - Cofounder of Fountain Street Art Gallery
“As a staff member here, I have enjoyed the Danforth Annual Juried Exhibition for years, both in our former home downtown and again, here at the Jonathan Maynard Building. I have always been impressed with the breadth of truly impressive work featured in our
exhibitions and this year is no exception. I was honored to serve as a juror this year, reviewing a staggering number of submissions in a wide variety of media. I spent a great deal of time going back and forth over the entire group of works, looking for pieces that had a strong, confident point of view or made me curious to know more about the artist or work. My perspective is perhaps unique in that I work in and around the exhibit each year, so I am keenly aware of how our teachers and students interact with the art. Individually and as a composite, I am confident the works selected will provide a deeply meaningful experience for patrons as well as those attending programs at the art school.”
Noelle Fournier - Director, Danforth Art School
“I was deeply impressed by the quality of the artwork that was submitted from artists of all stages from emerging to well-established. Our region is richly layered with creativity and the submissions to the exhibition reflect the breadth, width, and depth of an infinite variety. The work of jurying the exhibition was extremely difficult and required many sessions to carefully look and absorb the artwork to find resonance between different pieces. It was an honor to serve in this capacity and I am excited to see the work in the museum.”

This exhibition would not have been possible without the tireless work and dedication of the Danforth staff, including Rachel Passannante, who flawlessly handled all of the logistics of the exhibition from start to finish, and made it look easy. Thanks to Laura Gayton, who created all the exhibition graphics and marketing material, including this catalog; and to Katherine Tako-Girard, who coordinated with the artists to give us a summer’s worth of programming. Thanks to Tim Johnson and Frank Graham for expert installation, and Mary Erickson, Barry Burlingham, Noelle Fournier, and Chandra Taylor, whose contributions to our team make the Danforth the regional gem we all love to be a part of.
