The
2023 Danforth Annual
2023 Danforth Annual
On view June 24–September 17, 2023
Back for a second year in the new Danforth galleries, we can officially say that the Juried Exhibition is once again an annual tradition. It is exciting to feel a continuity of programming after years of uncertainty. With each month, we are reemerging as the Danforth that our community remembers, crafting a unique contemporary identity and seeking to serve ever-widening audiences. The Juried Exhibition is one of the cornerstones of this community commitment.
The Danforth Annual Juried Exhibition presents a different curatorial perspective each year, showcasing innovative work, and introducing new artists. Once again, we had a panel of three jurors, representing the region, the University, and the Danforth. This year’s jurors are
Erin Becker, Executive Director of the Cambridge Art Association, Leslie Starobin, Professor of Art at FSU, and Rachel Passannante, Collections Curator at the Danforth. The 89 works in this exhibition represent a wide range of media and processes that both evoke and subvert tradition and, as a whole, are a feast for the senses.
The Juried Exhibition is a snapshot of the work being produced in New England right now, and the Danforth is privileged to host it. We are grateful to all of the artists who submitted to the exhibition and who contribute to the rich cultural landscape of this region. This exhibition is generously sponsored by Middlesex Savings Bank.
“It was a pleasure to review artworks by hundreds of New England-based artists, both new and familiar to me, as part of the Danforth Annual Juried Exhibition. What stuck with me after the review were the ways in which our collective experience of the pandemic seeped into the entries in subtle ways – a certain focus on domestic environments and objects, an abundance of familiar settings, and a desire for comfort for both artist and viewer. In some ways, I hope this is the positive lesson we can carry with us after three tumultuous years – a reminder of, and focus on, what is truly important in each of our lives.
Kudos to the artists – those who entered, and those selected by the panel. Your art enriches us all.”
Erin Becker Executive Director Cambridge Art Association“ It is always an exciting time at the Danforth when the Juried Exhibition process begins. Having the opportunity to look through such amazing contemporary artworks really highlights the caliber of New England artists. The diversity of medias and themes that have been
selected for this year’s exhibition promises a wonderful and inspiring exhibition. With more artists and artworks than last year, it made it a hard yet rewarding process for the jurors. I want to thank all the artists who applied and congratulate the artists who were selected.”
Rachel Passannante Collections Curator Danforth Art MuseumIt was a great honor to serve as Framingham State University’s representative on the panel of jurors. I was delighted to have the opportunity to review an array of pieces by New England artists working in a wide variety of mediums, incorporating unusual materials, and employing traditional and experimental processes. In the exhibition, color, patterning, and abstraction reoccur throughout, balanced by works-on-paper rendered in rich tones of black and white. Sculptures molded in clay, carved in wood, cast in metal, and built from recycled objects address themes of human existence. My sincere compliments to the hundreds of artists who had the courage to submit their work; it made our job as jurors especially challenging. Congratulations to all the artists whose creativity will be on exhibition throughout the summer. ”
