Biggest Yearling Contest

UDFoM is hosting two biggest yearling buck contests, the biggest typical yearling and the biggest non-typical yearling. Eligible entries will be from any semen and or bred does won in either the games or purchased at the live/silent auction from our 2023 convention.

To enter the contest, semen will have to be used in the 2023 breeding season. A maximum of 3 does can be bred per straw of semen. At the 2024 convention all does will have to be registered with UDFoM along with their DNA number and which semen they were AI’d with, DNA must be provided at time of registration.

To qualify for the contest, you must provide DNA and picture of the yearling showing the tag # and a tape of the width of the antlers. All scoring will be done by an official SCI scoring panel. The winning antlers must have antler core DNA’d before prize money can be awarded. The antler core will be taken by the official scorer & contest chairperson, it will then be sent into NADR for DNA verification at UDFoM cost. No limit for entries by any one farm or person. Buyers of semen without A-I capabilities can go into a partnership or buy open does and have them bred by farms that A-I. The contest is not limited to Michigan buyers & we encourage everyone to join in.

The prize will be $2,000 from UDFoM for each category to be paid at our 2026 convention when these bucks will be 1 ½ years old. Along with the prize money the winner will also get a free full-page ad & a farm article in the Quest Magazine. The semen donor for the biggest contest winner will also get a free full-page ad in the Quest Magazine.

Obergon in Western Mexico, will be your home for the next 4 days & 5 nights, while fishing the famous Lake Oviachic & shooting the skies for the challenging Mexican doves and ducks. You will be spending 4 nights on our beautifully appointed and restored 15’x40’ 1964 all aluminum hull houseboat. Our house boat mothership and separate fishing boat have space for 4 anglers and the captain. The House Boat boasts 2 staterooms with queen /bunk configuration, full size shower, bathroom, separate up top Captains quarters, Kitchen and dining area. State Line Cryogenics

Antler Cutting (July through September) -Hands on experience with medicating, banding antlers, and cutting antlers. Overall experience will be 1-2 hours.

Bottle Feeding (July through August)-The experience of bottle feeding multiple pens of fawnsapproximately 1 hour of feeding/socializing with fawns. Overall experience will be 2 hours.

Darting: A guide for remote drug delivery (Year round) - hands-on experience of the entire darting process. This will include prepping darts, loading darts, and actually firing the CO2 powered projector. Overall experience will be 2 hours.

Weaning Fawns in Handling Facility (September)- (Dates TBD) This will be a fast pace, high intensity and hands on experience of how to move whitetail deer through a handling facility with the purpose of separating mothers from fawns. Overall experience will be 2 hours.

Moving Bucks to Hunting Pasture (2 person maximum), August through September-This will be one of the more in-depth experiences we have to offer. You will have the experience of accompanying staff while we remotely sedate multiple animals, medicate, remove dead velvet from antlers, retag, load in trailer, and finally release animals into hunting pasture. Overall experience will be 2-3 hours.

Fawn Tagging Ride-along (2 person maximum, June through July)- This experience will include a chance to hold a newborn fawn as well as watching staff tag and vaccinate a baby fawn in our breeding facility. Overall experience will be 2 hours.

WANT CWD RESISTANCE?

We have been working for five years on markers and the last two years breeding cycles with GEBV with more coming this spring.

In Texas it is the latest rage, we are already there!

The circles at right represents “Mulder’s Chart” which shows some of the interactions of the codon markers. Antagonistic (RED/ OFF RED) codons have had negative effect on susceptibility of cervids. We believe that the Survival Markers (Green) have proven to be more resistant to CWD. Along with the codon markers, we are using Dr. Seabury’s GEBV research in our deer herd.
