LIFE @ BRIO

Happy St. Patrick’s Day!

MARCH 2023
PROUDLY BROUGHT TO YOU BY
THE OFFICIAL NEWSLETTER OF BRIO COMMUNITY ASSOCIATION

Lifestyle Update

If you have ever had the chance to live in Alaska, once you have survived the winter solstice you will noticed the days getting longer and be ever so grateful, I thought it was heaven with the scenery when we first arrived and wonder why everyone did not storm Alaska. Then March arrives and you realized you have four more months until Spring! You gear up each year and realize each year has five quarters and not four!

In ST. George it is spring- we see buds on the trees, we prune our rose bushes and plant our peas. The days get longer and so much warmer again and the sunshine is unbeatable! We plan for everyone’s spring break, start booking stays for families and put the space heaters away. Spring has Sprung what are you plans?

I would like to introduce Alex Burton, our new Administrative Assistant. She works twenty-five hours at the front desk and has been helpful in getting us organized.

HI! My name is Alex and I am the new administrative assistant at the Brio Clubhouse! I have lived in St George for 5 years to go to school at Utah Tech University, I will graduate in the spring with a BS in Integrated Studies with emphases in Sociology and Humanities. I love St. George because it is close to all my favorite things. I love hiking at Zion National Park, paddleboarding at Quail Creek and boating. Swimming, and cliff jumping at Sand Hollow, and I have been loving getting back into roller skating at the Rinq. I also love to do indoor hobbies as well, such as crocheting, reading, and baking, however I do like to crochet and read while hammocking. My favorite place on earth is Disneyland, and my favorite ride there is the Haunted Mansion, we go there every year for my birthday in October. My family is super close, and we all love going on adventures in our side by side. We have a golden doodle puppy named Dewey who just turned 6 months old, if you see me at the desk and ask, I’ll be happy to show you a picture of him. I am looking forward to working with everyone here at Brio.

Let’s look at this month’s events!

The Hiking Club

Fellow Adventurers:

The next hike for “The Hiking Club” (THC) is scheduled for Saturday March 11. Our destination is Pioneer Rim Trail in the Red Cliffs Desert Reserve. There is no entrance fee and no permit is necessary.

This four mile out and back round trip includes interesting red rock formations, slick rock sections, great views of St. George, and wildlife sighting opportunities. The hike should take about two to 2 1/2 hours at a leisurely pace. The trailhead elevation is 3,115 feet with 190 feet elevation gain from the trailhead to the highest point of the hike. I rate this hike as easy. Much of the trail is up and down, with only one extended steep section as you get close to the northern edge of Pioneer Park.

It is easy access to the trailhead in a standard vehicle. We will meet for the pre-hike meeting in front of the Brio clubhouse at 9:00 am.

I encourage everyone to “like” The Hiking Club Facebook page. It is a easy way for us to communicate and share our hiking experiences and photos. Post some photos of our hike. Here is the link: https://www.facebook.com/TheHikingClubsouthernUtah/

Mr. Foodie:

SW Utah Restaurant Reviews

“All the news that’s fit to eat”

As the old adage goes, “A food reviewer’s work is never done”. Recently, I read some great on-line reviews of a Philly cheesesteak restaurant in Dixie Bowl & Billiards, of all places. Being a lover of all-things cheesesteak, I immediately journeyed over there, only to find that it had vacated that spot months ago. Undaunted, I then drove to its’ new address,185 Bluff St., which turned out to be a vacant lot next to Kneaders. There, in the pouring rain, sat Chuck’s Phat Philly’s Food Truck.

While their online site listed hours of 11-9, it was empty, so, still hungry and somewhat discouraged, I returned home. Days later, after calling Chuck and verifying that he was actually there, I once again safaried down Bluff on my hunt for “The Elusive Philly Cheesesteak Sandwich”. Proving that the third time was indeed a charm, the food truck was there and looked open for business.

Chuck, a friendly guy, who owns and runs the operation, apologized several times for the confusion about the hours and location. I ordered my cheesesteak the normal way, “wit” (with onions) and “wit wiz” (with cheese wiz). However, CHUCK HAD NO WIZ!!! He confided to me that since the locals weren’t ordering it, he just stopped carrying wiz! My heart sank… I was now already pretty certain that, despite the many glowing online reviews, this was not going to be the beloved Philly cheesesteak that I knew and loved. Dang! Oh well, when in Utah, I guess.

BENJA’S THAI (SG, 2 locations): Pretty standard Thai menu, but very well-made and tasty. Tom Kha Kai soup and khau soi special are standouts. Curries great as well.

Chuck then offered me his “special sauce” to spread on the sandwich. “Sure, why not”, I figured, especially since it wasn’t going to be authentic anyway. Feeling adventurous, I actually chose the Balboa, a cheesesteak sandwich on lightly toasted garlic bread, with pepper jack cheese. Next, I ordered some fries, which he dips in honey and dusts in Cajun spices. My empty stomach growling in anticipation, I sat alone in the car and awaited my somewhat unusual, but tasty sounding order.

SAKURA (SG): High-quality sushi combined with Japanese steakhouse. Try the special combo rolls. Kids love steakhousechef show. New building and lobby big upgrade over prior digs (check out gorgeous new exterior doors and “aquarium floor”). New location hard to find without GPS and parking inconvenient

Q: So, was it worth all the hassle, Mr. Foodie? A: Well, the meat was juicy, tender and flavorful. The recommended sauce was a perfect blend of sweet and savory, with a touch of heat, and it went great on the chopped beef, onions, spicy cheese and garlic toast. The French fries were perfectly cooked, while the Cajun spices and honey added a delicious counterpoint to the tasty, crispy spuds.

Chuck’s Phat Phillies is now open on Tu-Thurs 11-3 and Fr-Sat 11-3 and 5-8, but these may change. Call them at 435-261-7805.

1861 (Washington): Undiscovered gem! Yummy small plates of interesting, but very accessible food. Reasonably priced, healthful and delicious. Lovely décor. Located on grounds of Ovation Retirement Community, but NOT “old people food”! Black bass always delicious. Only open for dinner, Thu-Sat. Try it!

Verdict: Utah-Philly cheesesteak food truck, with delicious, if inauthentic, Philly cheesesteak sandwiches, is worth your dough.

BEST OF THE REST:

Casa Tequilana (Leeds) (Mexican), Rusty Crab Daddy (SG) (seafood boils), Chef Alfredo (SG) (Italian), Aragosta (SG)(European), Cliffside (SG) (modern American) (great views!)

NEW FOR YOU: Mary’s Cheesecakes, 1664 S Dixie Dr., has recently opened, expanding from a homebased business. Growing up with 3 delis within 10 minutes of my home, I know really good, dense, deli cheesecakes and this is quite close to the real deal. Many flavors and toppings, sold by the cake/slice/minis.

Verdict: Put on your oversized sweatpants and head on down!

Agree? Disagree? Found a place that I should try?

Backs and Necks: What Can You Do?

Statistically 80% of Americans will deal with back pain of significance at some time in their lives. That’s almost all of us dealing with aches or pains that significantly affect our lives. Typically back pain will recur, the symptoms fade and you get on with your life ... without addressing the underlying problem.

Back problems that are felt in the back, usually the lower back and upper hips generally involve muscle, ligament or fascia. If the pain goes down the leg there is usually nerve involvement. Neither of these assumes spine or disc involvement. The idea of a “slipped disc” is outdated. Best books on the subject: Back Exercise by Brian Richey and Back in Control, A Surgeon’s Roadmap Out of Chronic Pain by David Hanscom, MD.

In the 30+ years I’ve been involved with helping solve back problems there have been a few studies matching spine health to symptoms. The outcome has consistently been that having pain or not is a flip of the coin. Ugly looking spines can have no symptoms and good looking spines can have significant pains.

Read the books above. Come learn what you can do to improve back function, reduce aches and pains and improve your quality of life! The presentation will be both information and exercise participation.
