A
s we move into another fall here in Alabama, I want to take a minute to thank everyone who continues to support the Alabama Deer Association and our industry.
Deer farming is something that we all love and have a lot invested in - not only financially, but also the blood, sweat, and tears it takes in our industry day in and day out. Like any industry, we face challenges, but I believe we are at our best when we work together and support one another as we move forward. With that said I want to thank everyone who helped with and supported our recent online fundraiser through McClung Sales. We appreciate everyone who donated items, helped organize, and bid or bought items through it. It was our first time trying this and it was a complete success! Your continued support of our association is truly a blessing and greatly appreciated. Preparations are already underway for our Annual Conference and Fundraiser to be held February 26-27 at Cotton Creek. Booth and table registrations are now open and we’re looking forward to another great event. There is a gun drawdown being planned for the event as well as bringing the poker tournament back. We want this event to be bigger and better than ever, so be making plans now to attend. Keynote speakers will be present and there will be educational seminars for all to take advantage of. With breeding and hunting seasons approaching, this is one of the busiest times of the year for all of us. I hope everyone has a safe and successful season, both on the farm and in the woods. I’m proud to serve as President of the ADA and appreciate every one of you that take the time to serve, participate in our events, share ideas and contribute to help move our industry forward. An association is only as strong as the people behind it, and we have a great group of people here in Alabama. Thank you for your continued support. We appreciate you all. ongratulations to Dawson Guy for being the Kidz Outdoors “Kid of the Year” 2026. He has been one of their ambassadors for several years now. If you get to know him, you would understand why Kidz Outdoors Founders Rick and Carol Clark look up to him. Dawson can do anything and they mean anything besides buttoning a shirt or cutting a steak. “If you think he is handicapped in the traditional sense, then you’re wrong. If you go fishing with him, he’ll probably shame you,” Rick said. Dawson harvested his first deer with Kidz Outdoors in 2021 at Jeremy Hudson’s place in northern Alabama. Since then, Rick and Carol have seen him catch a multitude of bass and an uncountable number of pheasants and doves. Rick was with Dawson when he got his first turkey and has also witnessed him harvesting hogs with his own knife. He also filmed Rick harvesting a turkey on a recent hunt. Dawson also loves to duck hunt and even has his own labrador retriever for duck and dove hunting. Today, Dawson is going to school and is working two jobs. (In fact, he has also met President Donald Trump on two occasions.) If you were to ever look up the word

“perseverance” in the dictionary, Rick and Carol believe you would see Dawson’s picture there as well. He has also guided children’s hunts for Kidz Outdoors and has a unique gift for calming down autistic children and for practically embarrassing grown men who think they might be tougher than him. Dawson can completely change your outlook on life by simply always being able to overcome any situation he comes across. Rick and Carol sincerely hope that everyone will have the pleasure of meeting him because in their words he is “something else.” He loves God, children and the great outdoors. God Bless Him! New World Screw Worm Population on the Rise

parasitic fly that was eradicated from the United States in the early 1980’s has re-emerged and is now affecting several areas of Mexico and parts of Texas. The New World screwworm, a greenish-gray fly with distinctive red eyes, lays its eggs in the open wounds, cuts or lesions of living animals. Once the eggs hatch, the larvae (maggots) feed on the animal’s living tissue for approximately seven days, causing severe damage as they grow. After reaching maturity, the larvae leave the wound, pupate, and eventually emerge as adult flies, continuing the cycle by infesting other animals. A single female screwworm can lay up to 300 eggs in a single event, allowing infestations to spread rapidly. If an infestation goes undetected it is often fatal to the affected animal, said Dr. Juan Campos, DVM, Assistant Professor in the Department of Large Animal Clinical Sciences and the Department of Wildlife Ecology and Conservation at the University of Florida. “The screwworm can affect a wide range of warm-blooded species, including livestock, dogs, hogs and humans. One of the first signs is a lesion that doesn’t heal, grows rapidly, and has a distinct, unpleasant and recognizable odor. The lesion can progress quickly, expanding from the size of a ping pong ball to that of a baseball within just 24 hours. However, when detected early and treated promptly, affected animals often have a good chance of survival. Administering an appropriate dose of approved antiparasitic medications can effectively treat infestations, while strategic usage can significantly reduce the risk of new cases. “Treating captive-raised deer will be particularly challenging, as they are not as tame as regular
livestock,” said Dr. Campos. “If the fly spreads, new management efforts may increase costs for producers. Additional personnel might be needed to monitor herds and identify cases early.” A breakthrough in screwworm control occurred in the 1960’s through an eradication program that included large-scale releases of sterile flies. Scientists discovered that the female screwworm mates only once in their lifetime. Based on this finding, they developed the Sterile Insect Technique, which involved mass-producing, sterilizing, and releasing male screwworm flies into the wild. No viable offspring were then produced, causing a population decline. Although the effort took approximately two decades to achieve its objective, it was ultimately successful, leading to the eradication of the screwworm from the U.S. and much of North America. The parasite was not detected again until cases were reported on a cattle operation in Mexico, in November of 2024.
While the re-emergence of the screwworm is concerning, Dr. Campos emphasized that awareness, surveillance, and prompt reporting remain the most effective tools for controlling its spread. “People should be vigilant, but they should also understand that this is a manageable situation,” Dr. Campos said. “The fly cannot survive prolonged cold winters, which limits its ability to establish populations in northern regions. Producers and veterinarians should contact their state Dept. of AG or animal health authorities immediately if they suspect a case. No one will be penalized for reporting an infestation. Communication is essential, and no one should hesitate to reach out.” Monitoring the movement of the screwworm remains a priority for the U.S. Department of Agriculture’s Animal and Plant Health Inspection Service (APHIS), which continues to coordinate public outreach efforts. Oklahoma Treading New Territory with Releasing CWD Resistant Deer into the Wild

n Oklahoma, deer farmers are breeding as fast as possible for genetic resistance, inspired by the passage in February 2024 of House Bill 3462, the Chronic Wasting Disease Improvement Act. HB 3462 made it possible this past spring to release deer that are “SS” and make the GEBV cutoff of -0.056 into wild populations. This was a “first” for Oklahoma and hopefully may set a precedent for other states to be given permission in the future by government agencies, to do the same. “In the first part of 2026, we didn’t have such a surplus of resistant deer that we wanted to sell them just yet,” said Whitetails of Oklahoma (WOO) Vice President Tim Condict. “But we still put some on the ground just to break the ice. Most likely it will be 2028 before we have enough to actually sell quite a few.” The state tested more than 500 wild deer last year and got the results in March, indicating that around 40% had one or more “S” marker and only about 2.5% had “SS” markers. The wild deer also had an average GEBV score of -0.000. In other words, they could use some help. CWD continues to be found around the Oklahoma border (especially Arkansas) with a few cases inside the border having been found in Northwest Oklahoma. “The Oklahoma Department of Agriculture continues to be fantastic at helping the breeders to be able to help the landowners who want to protect their property and wildlife from developing a significant prevalence rate,” Condict said. “We figured to cover the state it would take around 2,000 bred does. So, it’s not going to happen immediately, but other states sitting on their hands or
adopting failed policies when there is an available answer, seems to me, to be close to a dereliction of their duty.” Condict feels other states should look at adopting a similar program to assist Mother Nature in her drawnout process of making the wild deer population more resilient. Just the mere introduction of genetic diversity upon the landscape could make the wild deer much healthier and robust, along with resistance to CWD. “The cool thing about the Oklahoma law is the fact that it doesn’t cost the wildlife agency or the taxpayers a penny,” Condict explained. “The deer are purchased by private landowners and released with an orange tag in each ear on their property. Hopefully landowners will spread the word to not harvest those animals. In a lot of states, the public is fed up with an agencies approach to CWD. As bad as they hate to admit it, genetic durability is the only answer.”

We look forward to the day when wildlife agencies across the country fully welcome the news of a solution to the problem, after 60 years of failure. We really appreciate the support we have received from our state, and the help we have received from Dr. Christopher Seabury and NADR to actively address our concerns in Oklahoma.”

my Stefanowicz grew up learning one very important thing. To do anything well, it requires dedication. Dedication is exactly what every successful deer farmer learns and what Stefanowicz now exuberates not just in owning and operating Awesome Whitetails in Middlebury Center, Pennsylvania with her husband Jason, but also in her job as an Accounts Receivable staff member for D & K Design. D & K Design, producer of 11 quarterly state deer association magazines, saw Stefanowicz as the perfect fit for the job.
“I’ve known Amy for years, along with Jason,” said D & K Design Magazine Editor Kathy Giesen. “When I heard that Amy was looking for a part-time job, Jason joked that she could come work for me. Well, I took him up on it. Amy is very personable, well-known in the deer industry and very detail oriented. We are so glad to have her on board.” As a young girl growing up on a hobby farm near Telford, Pennsylvania where
beef cattle, pigs and chickens roamed, Stefanowicz, now 47, gladly partook in the daily duties of caring for them. Her late parents Larry and Beverly were a great example of devotion back then, and along with it they both nurtured their daughter’s interest in agriculture, 4-H and even bowling. As the years passed, Stefanowicz found herself drawn to both horses and teaching, and even dreamed of becoming a barrel racing competitor on the national circuit. Ultimately, she was compelled to pursue early childhood education at Montgomery Community College, shortly after graduating from Dock Mennonite Academy. Later, she met Jason at a birthday party, ultimately fell in love and married him on September 11th, the same day as her birthday, in 1999. Now, through the creation of their deer farm and the daily caring for deer, Stefanowicz has found the perfect combination of her passions as a teacher and animal lover. Her advice on raising fawns has been sought out by uncountable people in the deer

industry. She attends a vast majority of deer association events and eagerly looks forward to each one. However, she finds comfort in knowing her success is firmly rooted in the life lessons they taught her. DEEP INTO PHASE TWO OF CWD CUTTING EDGE TECHNOLOGY

ith Phase One for developing a blood test for early CWD detection essentially in their rearview mirror, scientists at Dream Genomics, a visionary biotech firm started in 2023 and based out of Northbrook, Illinois, are now deeply entrenched in Phase Two, Biological Confirmation. This second phase is moving ever closer to finishing up, explained Dr. Gary M. Pusateri, CEO and Founder of Dream Genomics. Biological confirmation, Phase Two, entails gathering sample after sample from virtually anywhere CWD is detected in the U.S. and Canada in whitetails, mule deer and elk, and pinning down the specific genes that distinguish themselves as being the answer to the diagnosis of CWD. Phase Two has involved extensive travel, time, effort and research on behalf of Dr. Pusateri as well as Dr. Michael Falduto, Chief Technology Officer and Founder and Dr. Scott Magnuson, Chief Scientific Officer and Founder. The more testing that takes place during Phase Two, the closer they come to being 90 percent accurate
(or better) as to which specific genes reveal the presence of CWD, regardless of the location a deer farmer raises deer. As this dedicated trio of scientists works diligently to finish Phase Two and continue onto Phase Three, Assay Development, they are very grateful for those investors who have allowed their work to move forward. However, they are also hopeful that new investors will contribute in order to more fully guarantee their work can be seen to full fruition. “We aren’t connected to a university,” Dr. Pusateri explained. “We currently rely on support from our investors, grants and self-funding for everything that we do.” To come full circle in their gamechanging quest, Phase Three, the final phase, involves moving accurate and targeted samples onto PCR plates. Assuming CWD positive genes become paired down to the fewest specific and acutely accurate number needed for testing, more tests could be run per plate, therefore not costing a deer farmer as much money to test their herd. “This is why Phase Two is so important,” Dr. Pusateri explained.
“We want to ultimately be so accurate that both time and money are saved. We are doing whatever it takes to be at that point. ½ cup finely Shredded Lettuce
Instructions 1. Make the sauce: in a small bowl, add mayonnaise, diced pickles, yellow, mustard, ketchup, apple cider vinegar, sugar, and paprika. Mix the ingredients together and then sit in the fridge until you’re ready to serve. 2. Preheat a large skillet or griddle to medium high heat with a tablespoon of oil. Once preheated, add in the ground venison and cook it until it’s brown breaking it up as it cooks. Season all over with Worcestershire sauce salt, garlic powder, onion powder, and black pepper. Add in water and mix until the seasonings are well distributed. Removed from heat. 3. To assemble the crunch wraps, start with one warmed burrito size tortilla. It’s important that the burrito is warmed so that it doesn’t rip while wrapping. Add a thin layer of the sauce, then top with 1/4 of the ground venison and add two slices of cheese. Top with the tostada, add some more sauce and top with shredded lettuce, diced onion and diced pickles. Top the filling it a taco sized tortilla and wrap up the edges of the burrito sized tortilla around the taco size tortilla so that they are overlapping. 4. Continuous assembling the remaining crunch wraps until you run out of ground venison. 5. Take the assembled crunch wraps back to your skillet or griddle. Place them down and let them cook for one or two minutes to seal, adding oil to the skillet as needed. Flip over and let cook for another minute on the other side to toast it. 6. Serve warm and enjoy. 40
