OVER THE PAST SEVEN YEARS, Dance Victoria has worked with its dance partners in Greater Victoria to make January the month we get the city moving! Scheduled for the last 10 days of the month, just as your New Year’s resolve starts to fade, Dance Days gives you the opportunity to make good on the promises you made yourself — get out there, meet new people, find your groove. At the heart of Dance Days on January 29 and 30, we plan to move you in another way. We’re extending a free invitation for you to join us at our studios for Rough Cuts. You’ll see five new works by West Coast dance artists over two days plus you’ll be joining a dozen of our dance presenter colleagues who make the trek to Victoria annually to experience these new pieces in the intimacy of our studios, performed under work lights. You’ll participate in a dialogue with the artists and meet them at informal receptions between each hour-long showing. These are nextgeneration artists who have piqued our interest and whose work we’re interested in developing. Over the past several years, Dance Victoria has been investing in artists through its annual Chrystal Dance Prize, artist residencies and its mentor program, the LOLA Projects. We have appreciated the generous support of donors like Jawl Bundon LLP, D’Ambrosio Architecture + Urbanism, Fisgard Capital and many individuals who helped underwrite these projects. We’re very proud of what we have accomplished. Two projects we’ve supported were recently cited as among the five top dance events of 2015 by Globe & Mail dance critic Martha Schabas: Out Innerspace Dance Theatre and Kidd Pivot (Crystal Pite). On January 29 and 30, we’re presenting the World Premiere of Out Innerspace’s new group work, Major Motion Picture, at the Metro Studio. I urge you to join us. Tickets to the premiere on January 29 include a party on the stage with the artists, a live DJ and specialty cocktails. Dance Victoria has participated in commissioning this new Out Innerspace work and has provided the company with two residencies at our studios. Kidd Pivot’s Betroffenheit, a work that Schabas calls “rare and staggering,” plays the Royal March 11 and 12. So grab a partner, take a deep breath and step onto On the left: Tiffany Tergarthen and the dance floor or join us for a peek behind the curtain Jonathan Young in Betroffenheit. during Rough Cuts. Catch the SPARK!

We’re excited to present Les Ballets Jazz de Montréal (BJM) on February 26 and 27 at 7:30pm at the Royal Theatre. BJM’s motto is to “provoke emotions through contemporary dance” — and that they do! The Company is known for its radiant, expressive style that lifts the soul, earning the Company its title “feel good company.” Who doesn’t need a little of that in February? BJM also makes a conscious effort to remain accessible to all audiences, making them popular among both neophytes and informed audiences. BJM’s Triple Bill, coming to Victoria, tests the virtuosity and endurance of 15 remarkable dancers. In fact, the theme underlying BJM’s program is energy. Whether it is tribal, urban, unbridled or concentrated, the energy is visceral, noble and infectious, and conveyed through the Company’s technically proficient, dynamic performers. The three works: Rouge by Rodrigo Pederneiras; Mono Lisa by Itzik Galili; and Kosmos by Andonis Foniadakis, pulse with the stamina of those who refuse to give up and who draw from deep personal strength. You’ll be amazed that bodies can move this way and be so strong — yet convey such breezy effortlessness. Caution: you may have to remind yourself to breathe!

Dance Victoria News Annual General Meeting In late November 22 members came to Dance Victoria Studios for our Annual General Meeting to review the results from Dance Victoria’s 2014/15 year, which ended June 30, 2015. The audited financial statements for the year revealed a small surplus of $8,704 on a total budget of $1.3 million. RWB’s Nutcracker was the highest grossing show in Dance Victoria’s 19-year history. In all, 2014/15 was reported as a stellar year.

Board Members At the AGM, Stephen White and the Board expressed sincere thanks for members who are now stepping down after helping Dance Victoria through its year of transition: Paul McNair, Mary Desprez, and Allana Lindgren. Members will be considering candidates for election to the Board throughout the coming year.

Chrystal Dance Prize To Be Assessed By International Jury Dance Victoria’s Chrystal Dance Prize was established in 2011 from a generous bequest by the late Dr. Betty “Chrystal” Kleiman. Kleiman, a renowned pediatrician, wanted Canadian dance artists to have the opportunity to collaborate with international artists. The fund is managed by the Victoria Foundation and to date has awarded more than $100,000 to seven mid-career artists working with colleagues from South Korea, France, Italy, China, Brazil and Germany. In 2016, Dance Victoria will award $35,000 to new projects. Three internationally respected and critically acclaimed dance artists will be among the jury selecting the 2016 recipients of Dance Victoria‘s Chrystal Dance Prize (Independent Dance Artists). The jury includes Emily Molnar, Stephan Laks, Ewan McLaren and Dance Victoria’s Producer, Stephen White. Emily Molnar is Artistic Director of Ballet BC and Artistic Director of Dance at The Banff Centre. Named Globe and Mail’s 2013 Dance Artist of the Year, she is also a recipient of the 2015 BC Community Achievement Award and the 2015 (Vancouver) YWCA Women of Distinction Award in Art, Culture & Design.

Stephan Laks is Rehearsal Director with the GöteborgsOperans Danskompani (Göteborg, Sweden) and has worked as a performer, répétiteur, and choreographer with Sasha Waltz & Guests, Fernando Melo, Royal Research/Royal Swedish Ballet, Project Point Blank/ Hokuto Kodama, and Springboard Danse Montréal. Currently Artistic Director of the Alfred ve dvoře Theatre (Prague, Czech Republic), Ewan McLaren has worked as an actor, director and producer with Prague’s Studio Ypsilon, Daniel MacIvor’s dada kamera company (Toronto), One Yellow Rabbit Company and High Performance Rodeo Festival of Innovative Performance (Calgary). The jury will assess all the Chrystal Dance Prize (Independent Dance Artists) proposals and announce the recipients in early February.
