Dear Friends, Sometimes it is just fate that one happens to be in one place and experience something exciting and unusual. Well, I am in that place.

The excitement of celebrating a 50th anniversary is truly amazing and totally unusual, especially in our world of dance. Not many presenting organizations last this long — an incredible testament to our board of directors for its vision.

It was 50 years ago that a small group of local dance enthusiasts came together with the same goal: to give the St. Louis community access to enjoy the world’s best dance companies, which, at the time, were not consistently traveling to the region. Since then, Dance St. Louis has been the driving force behind the community’s exposure, often first exposure, to professional dance, varying in style and genre, from across the globe. I have been honored to carry the torch for the past 10 years, and the foundation built by my predecessors has made it possible to accomplish incredible things in such a short time.

You, our audience, have been our motivator. Year after year some of the finest attractions in the world have graced our stage. Year after year you have developed a discerning taste for dance, and year after year we have been able to push and assist our local dance institutions to raise their standards and challenge others at a national level. Together, and with their support, so many great things have been achieved.

Not only have we focused on the art form, but we have also committed time, energy and money to prepare our youth through comprehensive educational programs. Those interested in pursuing a dance career have access to support and guidance on their path to success. This has only been made possible through the generous support of local corporations as well as your ticket purchase and presence at the theatre.

Though I will definitely not be leading you for the next 50 years, it is with great pleasure, sense of passion and total commitment that I launch the institution towards our century mark.

I thank you for your trust and support. This 50th anniversary season and celebration is for you and about you.

Led by world-renowned choreographer Paul Taylor, Paul Taylor Dance Company is a highly sought-after ensemble that delivers dynamic and thought-provoking pieces that have been pushing boundaries for 62 years. Taylor’s meticulously choreographed dances draw from and comment on influencial moments in American cultural history — such as war, spirituality, sexuality, morality and mortality — putting his comical spin on some of these tougher issues while embracing the beauty of movement.

In 1954, Paul Taylor presented his first choreographed piece with five other dancers in Manhattan. Taylor has since claimed 60 years of unrivaled creativity becoming a cultural icon and one of history’s most celebrated artists. He is hailed as part of the pantheon that created American modern dance.

When Dance St. Louis first presented Carmina Burana in 2013, its three performances were sold out. Now, back by popular demand, the spectacular production — a tapestry of live music and riveting dance — returns to the Touhill, featuring Nashville Ballet, University of MissouriSt. Louis Orchestra & Singers, Bach Society of Saint Louis and the St. Louis Children’s Choirs. 120 singers, 60-musicians, full orchestra and 40 dancers take to the stage together, evolving German composer Carl Orff’s thunderous, dramatic cantata to magnificent proportions.

When the curtains open Fortuna is revealed, represented as the Wheel of Fortune — a huge skirt that encircles a single dancer with images projected on to it to make it look like a turning wheel. Drunkards, fools, and lovers alike are caught in its relentless round. The bold first sound is O Fortuna — Orff’s iconic musical work with strong percussive elements, ancient lyrics and ominous tone that has been made famous the world over from its use in film and TV. Created by Nashville Ballet Artistic Director & CEO Paul Vasterling, and complete with stunning costumes and visual effects, this production of Carmina Burana takes you deep into Carl Orff’s stupendously popular music in a way you’ve never experienced.

The irrepressible Moses Pendleton presents Alchemia, his new work for the dazzling dancer-illusionists of MOMIX. Just as he led audiences on a surreal journey through the four seasons in Botanica, Pendleton manipulates the four classic elements — earth, air, fire and water — in Alchemia to produce a show about the art of alchemy, and the alchemy of art. A multimedia spectacle, Alchemia bursts with beauty, daredevil thrills and playful humor. It’s MOMIX at its most magical.

MOMIX Founder and Artistic Director Moses Pendleton was born and reared on a dairy farm in Northern Vermont. The cows of his childhood are honored in MOMIX’s name, which he took from a feed supplement.

While still a student at Dartmouth College in 1971, Pendleton co-founded Pilobolus, which went on to win international acclaim for its innovative blend of acrobatics and modern dance. In 1981, he started MOMIX, based in Washington, Connecticut. In addition to stage performances worldwide, MOMIX has worked in film and television, recently appearing in national commercials for Hanes and Target, which premiered during the 67th Annual Golden Globe Awards.

Dance St. Louis’ original creation, New Dance Horizons, returns for its fourth year, but with a twist. In celebration of Black History Month, three African-American choreographers create three new works inspired by legendary St. Louis African-American artists. Each choreographer is paired with a local professional dance company to create the three unique world premieres.

MADCO performs an original creation by Bebe Miller, a native New Yorker and Bessie Award winner, who has choreographed pieces for major dance centers in the U.S., Europe and Africa. Her work has been noted for its mix of virtuosic, athletic speed and the fragile human impulse behind it.

The Big Muddy Dance Company pairs with San Francisco-based choreographer Robert Moses, whose works explore topics ranging from oral traditions in African-American culture to the dark side of contemporary urban culture.

Groundbreaking artistic pioneer Dianne McIntyre, regarded as “one of modern dance’s reigning divas” with a career spanning more than 40 years, sets her work on a local dance ensemble, auditioned and casted specifically for this event. See some of St. Louis’ best local dancers perform McIntyre’s original, exclusive piece.

St. Louis’ pathbreaking dance festival, SPRING TO DANCE®, returns for its ninth year. As one of the region’s must-see festivals, SPRING TO DANCE® brings together 30 professional dance companies from across the country for three unique, exhilarating nights over Memorial Day weekend. You name it — ballet, hip-hop, tango, classical, contemporary, modern and more — the festival offers something for everyone with a different program each night.

Each evening of the festival begins at 5:30 p.m. with interactive performances in the lobby by local dance organizations. EDUCATION PROGRAMS MONSANTO DANCE EDUCATION RESIDENCY PROGRAM The program offers local students from urban schools the opportunity to study dance intensively with teaching artists from world class dance companies. Paul Taylor Dance Company and MOMIX will reach about 200 under-served students in the 2015-16 season.

DANCE CAREER AWARD PROGRAM The program identifies and honors residency students who are exceptionally motivated and talented and show potential for a professional dance career.

THE YOUNG PEOPLE’S PERFORMANCE A one-hour, school-time show tailored to young audiences is offered each year to 1,400 school children in grades K-12 from all over the St. Louis area. In the 2015-16 season, the Young People’s Performance will be MOMIX in Alchemia.

MASTER CLASSES With each dance company we present, Dance St. Louis provides the opportunity for local students and teachers of dance to take a master class from ballet masters or principal company dancers.

Classes are offered on the campuses of our college partners: Webster University, Washington University, and the University of Missouri-St. Louis.
