Healthy Living We just finished our second week of Summer Camp!

Our Healthy living curriculum last week was a success.

It was very exciting to see everyone’s healthy dishes and beverages. We are so excited to have you all back at camp. Even though we had fun last week with our trip to the pool the fun doesn’t stop there. This week we will be taking a trip over to the Capitol… so be prepared.

10 Minute Exercise Written by: Mikalah Davis

Exercising is a major part of healthy living. Exercising means activity requiring physical effort carried out especially to sustain or improve health and fitness. Healthy living means health is the general condition of a person in all aspects. It is also a level of functional and/or metabolic efficiency of an organism. There are several different exercises you can do to help you maintain a healthy lifestyle. Here are a few exercises you can do for 10 minutes a day: •

Planks – Get down on the floor in a push up position on your forearms; and Keep your torso straight and

your body in a straight line from ears to toes with no sagging or bending. Your head is relaxed and you should be looking at the floor.

Hip Pivot - stand up with feet separated in parallel position. Bend over with your arms hanging comfortably at your sides.

Knee to chest crunches – Lay on the floor with knees in the air and hands behind your head. Bring your right elbow to your left knee and left elbow to your right knee.

Hip Lift- Lay comfortably on the floor with your feet flat on the ground and knees pointed upward. Hands flat on the ground. Then gently lift your pelvis pressing it toward the ceiling.

Jumping Jacks- jump into a star position and jump back into a parallel position and repeat.

Torso Tilt – Stand straight with your feet parallel and grasp you left hand with your right, reaching higher as you tilt your torso to the right and then to your left.

Last Friday’s Field Trip Yaa Ade Cunningham

As a finale of our first week of camp, last Friday was composed of having fun with water. We started off our morning by watching movies. The younger children watched the movie “Despicable Me” and the older children watched “Pitch Perfect”. After lunch, some of the campers celebrated by having a water fight. Jada Chisholm age 9 said that, “The water fight was fun; the campers sprayed water and everyone had a good time.” We had soon transported from Dance Place to Trinity University Pool. There we all had enjoyed ourselves as we practiced respect for one another.6 year-­‐old, Kunmi Williams described his pool experience as “Good,”; he explained how, he “swam” and also how “the water was very deep”. We ended our fun at the pool and drove back to Dance Place. In conclusion Nasir Winder explained how last Friday was the “Coolest and funniest Friday ever!” And how“, the water balloons were fun”. Just keep in mind that our Friday was closed with heavy rain. J
