OUR MISSION: Founded in 1980, Dance Place builds a community of artists, audiences and students through high quality performances, commissions, training and educational programs for people of all ages.

We are committed to enriching the field of dance locally, nationally and internationally. Our thriving arts campus serves as an anchor in the development of our Brookland / Edgewood neighborhood in Washington, DC.

Dear friends, Our remarkable journey from our early days in the heart of Adams Morgan, to ownership of our building in Brookland / Edgewood and its recent transformation into a state of the art facility has depended on so many people. We’re indebted to everyone who has added to the vibrancy of Dance Place, from our youngest three-year-old dance students to audience members in their nineties, as well as partnerships locally, nationally and internationally. A heartfelt thank you to supporters who contributed to be a part of our 35th Anniversary Commemorative Book, a special initiative we took to highlight the landmarks and people important to Dance Place’s evolution.

This 2015-2016 season was an opportunity to present many of the beloved artists who have been especially impactful throughout our history. Beginning with our meaningful Dance Place / Reunion concert featuring faculty and performers from our early days, we rounded out the season with other long-term partnerships with artists such as Rennie Harris, Cleo Parker Robinson, Sean Dorsey, Nejla Yatkin, AXIS Dance Company, KanKouran West African Dance Company and Coyaba Dance Theater.

The creation of our 8th St Arts Park demonstrated that Dance Place is continually moving forward as a vibrant anchor in our Brookland / Edgewood neighborhood while serving as a leading model in creative

placemaking nationwide. Now with a dedicated public space to host free community programming, we are able to engage with even more diverse stakeholders. The Park and its development has enhanced our mission of building a culturally vibrant, inclusive and cohesive community.

As you know, in April 2016 we announced our retirement as directors effective August 2017. Our Board of Directors is leading a rigorous search for a new Executive / Artistic Director who will be hired in the summer of 2017. In reflecting on our 35th Anniversary and looking to the future, we’re confident that Dance Place will continue to embrace the values that mark this organization – to be welcoming, respectful, nurturing and inclusive, alongside artistic excellence. The next generation of children, artists and leaders is poised to continue this legacy. Please enjoy this 2015-2016 report that shows Dance Place’s growth and impact - THRIVE 35.

Dance Classes Training the next generation of dancers and arts administrators • Offered classes for adult students of all abilities that served an average of 1,000 adults each month • High quality dance instruction provided to over 450 Kids on the Move students in on-site classes • 939 OutReach classes were provided for 1,223 students in the DC area • 22 college students and recent graduates received vital job training, dance instruction and professional development through our Intern Program • New OutReach partnerships with the Office of the State Superintendent’s 21st Century Learning Program and the President’s Committee on the Arts and Humanities Turnaround Arts DC program

8TH STREET ARTS PARK Led by a dedicated volunteer Steering Committee, the 8th St Arts Park utilized a community engaged design process to transform the formerly empty alley next to Dance Place into an artistic, vibrant public space. The 8th St Arts Park underwent construction in educational native plant garden, overhead lighting, public art commissions and flexible stage area.

Preview programming took place in August 2016, followed by the Park’s Grand Opening in September 2016 that launched our 36th Season.
