2 Director’s Letter Dear Friends, It is a pleasure to share with you Dance Place’s 2017-2018 Season annual report. This was a historic year for Dance Place, the first time in the organization’s 37-year history it operated under new leadership. With the support of an incredible board, hard-working staff, visionary artists, eager students, and helpful neighbors, you’ll see in the pages of this report that the MOMENTUM season was a resounding success.

The MOMENTUM Season took us from our own backyard (the Arts Park) here in Brookland / Edgewood, to the far flung reaches of South Africa, Japan and Hungary, up to New York and across the country to San Francisco—only to circle right back to our own theater and studios where world class dance

presentations on our stage and in our studio were curated to reflect the vibrant world in which we live. I hope you enjoy these highlights from a truly momentous year and how they prepare for a bright future ahead.

Board Chair Letter Every step of my decades-long journey with Dance Place has been exhilarating. When I first walked into that Adams Morgan studio back in 1981, I could have never known that I would move from active adult class student to audience member to steering committee to Board of Directors - and finally, to taking on the Chairship and leading our challenging but ultimately successful executive search. Dance Place has been my home and my new purpose in life, a place where I can ignite my creativity and meet like-minded professionals.

In 2017-2018, Dance Place renewed and refined its commitment to thoughtfully-crafted local engagement and high-quality performing arts presentations. My background in international development makes me even more cognizant of Dance Place’s unique impact on the cultural landscape of its home neighborhood in Brookland / Edgewood, on the DC Metro area, and on the national and international artistic community. It’s been a joy to work with these prodigious artists and administrators and I am so grateful to be part of this vibrant community as we chassé into the future.

2017-2018 Annual Report Founded in 1980, Dance Place builds a community of artists, audiences and students through high quality performances, commissions, training and educational programs. We are committed to enriching the field of dance locally, nationally and internationally. Our thriving arts campus serves as an anchor in our Brookland / Edgewood neighborhood in Washington, DC.

The work of Dance Place begins at home in our Brookland / Edgewood neighborhood in Washington DC, where we build a community of artists, audiences and students. Our reach extends from our home in North East DC to the wider DC metropolitan area, as dance students (youth and adults), families, and dance enthusiasts come

to Dance Place for classes, performance and professional development opportunities. This work echoes out to the national field of dance -- and beyond. These concentric circles of community are at the heart of everything we program, and forms the guiding star for our landmark organization.

Dance Place In the studio, we offered dance classes to 9,948 adults and 639 youth this year.In support of all that moving and shaking, we provided $120,000+ worth of scholarships to families, ensuring access for all.

In our Energizers Enrichment Programs, we offer a lifetime of learning, dancing and growing with educational and artistic experiences that moves from young children in our Summer Camp and Energizers Afterschool Club, all the way through job training and life skills for teens in our Junior Staff, and into adulthood with internships in arts administration and theater production.

In the theater, 1,306 students were given their first experience in a professional theater through our interactive, low-cost InReach performances. Families and artists benefit from our many opportunities for free or reduced tickets - this year we subsidized $53,750 worth of free tickets to our community members in need.

The impact of Dance Place’s programs is felt nowhere more strongly than it is in our home neighborhood of Brookland / Edgewood. Our thriving campus anchors a growing artistic community and holds space for longtime neighbors and business owners in this once-sleepy suburb.

For those who aren’t in Brookland / Edgewood, we came to them! Our OutReach educational programs provided 514 classes for 1566 students across the DC area. Our 19 performances in 14 schools and other partnering community organizations shared the joy of live performance with 1786 audience members. A huge thank you to our 24 Community Partners who made this and all our other work possible through the course of the year.

This summer, Dance Place produced free community music performances, dance parties, fitness classes and gardening workshops in Art on 8th. These family-friendly events on the 8th St Arts Park and Monroe Street Market served 475 participants over the course of thirteen weeks.

Dance Place continues to be a leading voice in supporting new risk-taking work by established and emerging artists alike. We led two fully commissioned works and supported 3 new co-commissioned works, including artists across the country—San Francisco’s Sean Dorsey, Cynthia Oliver from Illinois and the free-ranging BodyCartography Project, based sometimes in Minneapolis but just as often in Germany.

Adam was first introduced to Dance Place in 2012 when he went through the Leadership of Greater Washington program with Founding Director Carla Perlo. “Our class did a kick-off retreat together where Carla and I met during one of the ice-breaker exercises. We talked about dance and chocolate chip cookies, and hit it off right away.” He later joined the Dance Place Board of Directors in 2014 and has since helped with the Arts Park Steering Committee, traveled with the Dance Place Travel Club to Havana, Cuba, taken DC Casineros classes, and has been an audience member and supporter of many of the programs at Dance Place.

“I’m getting married this Spring and Leshia (my fiancé) and I will be doing a Cuban salsa routine for our first dance. We asked Adrian from DC Casineros to put together some choreography for us, which he graciously agreed to do, so it’s going to be really fun and we are super excited to have Dance Place be a part of our wedding!

One of the things I find most unique is DP’s ability to serve as a welcoming place where a truly diverse set of people meet each other. Young and old, rich and poor, from Edgewood to Cuba; there is a really eclectic mix of people running through Dance Place every day. It is no small feat to create a space like that, and while it may be centered around dance and camp, all of us benefit from it on a fundamental, human level.”

Donor Spotlight Nancy Garruba has been an enthusiastic patron of Dance Place for 12 years. She was first introduced when mutual friends brought her and Founding Director Emerita, Carla Perlo together. She is a strong supporter of Dance Place’s Energizers programs for children and families through outreach in schools, the afterschool program and the summer camp. As a patron of the theater she has been thrilled to see artists from all over the DMV area and the world grace the stage.

Sarah Greenbaum has worked at Dance Place since 2014 when she joined the Programming team as an intern. Since then, she has grown to her current position as Associate Curator where she leads the programming of our theatrical presentations and community performances.

“As both a presenter of world-class artistry and a grassroots community engager, Dance Place balances an incredibly important dual identity that I find endlessly fascinating and also unbelievably challenging. These two identities necessarily inform and strengthen each other.

Learning how the organization utilizes all its myriad strengths - and discovering how my work fits into this balance - has been the most interesting part of working at Dance Place.”
