As you know, the Arts Park is the third and final stage of Dance Place’s long envisioned “Arts Campus” on 8th Street NE: first the Brookland Artspace Lofts opened in 2011; then our beloved building underwent renovations and expansion in 2014; and now, we have a beautiful, activated public space in between!

We would like to give a special thanks to members of our Arts Park Steering Committee who were invaluable team members in the park’s creation. Thank you to all of our donors, project team members, neighbors and artistic community who kept us supported and inspired throughout the process. Dance Place is proud that the 8th St Arts Park has generated national attention as an example of best practices in creative placemaking – the concept of utilizing the arts to drive community development. Engaging Our Community: The Development Process In November 2014, Dance Place convened a volunteer steering committee made up of neighbors, artists, civic leaders, government agency representatives and other members of our community.

Over the next 20 months, our steering committee met 15 times to determine the park’s design, select the construction firm, brainstorm programming, select public art commissions, guide messaging and propose community engagement. Our passionate team was integral to the mission and vision for the Park—thank you!
Dance Place collected 400 printed and online surveys about respondents’ top five priorities for design, programming, concerns and ideas. Top 5 Goals for Park:
• 66% Improve quality of life for Brookland / Edgewood residents • 66% Positive engagement for local children and teenagers • 46% Community gathering space and networking opportunities
• 42% More opportunities for performing artists • 42% Activities for young families Top 5 Design Elements for Park:
• 49% Overhead canopy • 48% Movie projector screen • 44% Outdoor stage

Native Plant Garden
Enhancing Our Environment improving environmental conditions through the following initiatives:
Educational Native Plant Garden, a new 750 square foot garden that replaced asphalt and trash bins with plants native to the Mid-Atlantic region to help soak up stormwater Garden Club, offered on Thursday and Saturday afternoons, that educates people of all ages about horticulture, stormwater runoff, caring for plants and the appreciation for beautifying our area Exterior Downspout and Water Barrels, to properly dispose of stormwater from our roof so that it does not lead to land erosion or pollution of our water bodies
