Dear Friends, We are delighted to share Dance Place’s 30th Anniversary Season Annual Report with you. In 20102011, Dance Place celebrated three decades as a prolific dance presenter, dance school, provider of model programs for youth and partner in community development.

• As a pioneering force and leader in neighborhood revitalization, our annual economic impact on the Brookland community was approximately $2.4 million (Williams College’s C3D economic research institute).

• 95 professional concerts at the Dance Place and local theaters, over 1,000 audience members • 600 dance artists from 63 Metro area dance companies, 12 national and international touring companies

• 5 Friday morning InReach Performances for 700 students and teachers in our theater

Kids On the Move Recital: (middle) Salah, age 10, took Ballet/Tap II and Hip Hop as part of our spring Kids on the Move semester. Salah was on scholarship, as are 90% of our on-site participants.

• OutReach Performances for 18,000 audience members at over 20 schools and community centers (in collaboration with WPAS Concerts in the Schools, Arlington Humanities Project and the Hyman M. Perlo Fund)

DC-based company Dakshina/Daniel Phoenix Singh Dance Company made their annual Dance Place appearance on April 2 & 3, 2011. After their performance, Artistic Director Daniel Phoenix Singh wrote to us: “Experiences at Dance Place make me aware of the difference between people who care about nurturing artists, and people who say the right words but don’t match it with actions. I have never worked in a kinder, more supportive, professional setting than at Dance Place.”

• 30 Work/Study students provided with free training and work experience • 27 Kids on the Move dance classes on our campus served 150 children ages 3-15 • 1,000 hours of OutReach classes for 200 students in 13 schools • 14 Master classes taught by visiting artists

Cutumba: Dance Place is proud to have partnered with the Brooklyn Academy of Music to present renowned Cuban company Ballet Folklórico Cutumba as part of our 24th annual DanceAfrica, DC celebration. Cutumba received rave reviews in the New York Times and Washington Post: “From the moment the dancers and musicians of Ballet Folklórico Cutumba entered the stage at Dance Place on Saturday afternoon, they created the festive, let-your-hair-down atmosphere of a Cuban street parade. With broad smiles, brightly colored costumes and exuberant movements, the troupe offered a charming glimpse into the dance and cultural traditions of its native country.”
