Last year was our first VDF after lockdown and the energy, enthusiasm, and talent raised the roof on our new home at the Melbourne Showgrounds. In 2023 we cannot wait to do this again with you! With a stellar line up of artists to fuel your creativity, this year is going to be our biggest and best Energetiks VDF yet.

Hi All and a huge Welcome to our 2023 Victorian Dance Festival!

After last year’s welcome return to a physical space post-lockdowns, I’ve watched our community continue to grow and thrive as we’ve returned to schools, theatres and event spaces to do what we love - Dance.

As we’ve been developing our 2023 Festival I’ve frequently returned to our vision of “Community not Competition”. This year I want to encourage each of us to show up at VDF to discover and develop our uniqueness and to celebrate the individuality of others.

“Competition” fosters the belief that there is only a certain amount of space for people to belong whereas “community” nurtures the ability to make space for a diversity of expressions.

As artists we can thrive in an environment that continually moves and morphs as we do, so being physically present in community events is important for our growth. Often, our online lives can breed a comparison to others and so, while we try to remain inspired and draw inspiration from others, it is important for us to find out who we are as individuals.

This festival is designed as a safe and creative space for us all to explore who we are as artists. Whether we’re attending for the first time or are long-time dance veterans, we always have something to learn, some way to grow and an opportunity to release old models of thinking and operating to make space for fresh ideas and directions.

We’ve programmed an exciting line up of choreographers, instructors, mentors, and humans, who I believe contribute to this vision.

I also come to this festival with the understanding that everyone’s dance trajectory is varied, not everyone wants the same pathway or career.

For me - I feel strongly about curating a collective of artists for you who feed the community in many different ways, shapes and forms. Their varied journeys, styles and experiences inspire us to remember that there’s no right way to navigate this industry.

As someone who owes my journey in dance to my mentors, I will always advocate honouring those who came before us, as I spoke of in my last VDF letter. Equally, it is crucial that we carve out our own spaces, pathways and ideas to create new approaches that relate to the present. This is how art evolves in an organic community; inspiration plus innovation.

So this year let’s celebrate the diversity of our community, be nourished by those who inspire and instruct us and encourage us to discover and develop our own unique, individual artistry.

TAPATAK OZ is a unique tap dance syllabus and mentorship programme for teachers and students that launched in Australia in 2008, created by renowned tap dancer Christine Denny Since then, the syllabus has gained a reputation as being modern, technically challenging and most importantly - relevant to today’s tap scene and as such it is now in use all over Australia, as well as in the UK, USA, Canada, France, Italy, Finland, New Zealand, Singapore, Brazil, South Africa, Dubai and more. The fundamental principle underlying the syllabus is developing thinking students and teachers, who through Tapatak Oz develop self confidence, self appreciation and self motivation, alongside a quality tap technique, whilst discovering their unique quirks, style, gifts and talents that can be shown off through the programme. The programme is designed to celebrate individuality and encourage a genuine passion and enthusiasm for tap and rhythm. And after many years in the classroom this wonderfully liberating approach has developed many wonderful tappers who are confidently moving into the tap world with their own unique approach and style and an open mind to always continue learning.

Rambert Grades is a progressive and inclusive contemporary dance syllabus created from the landmark collaboration between two of the world’s leading dance organisations: Rambert School and Rambert company.

The benchmark for creative contemporary dance learning and practice, Rambert Grades offers students of all abilities and backgrounds the opportunity to develop lifelong skills. Carefully designed with an unequivocally holistic approach at its heart, the syllabus embraces an ethos of progressive dance education and is about inspiration, confidence, and self-belief.

The syllabus was developed by some of the most dynamic and relevant voices of contemporary dance in the UK, including material from renowned choreographers Hofesh Shechter and Alesandra Seutin. The syllabus offers dance training across Grades 1- 8 and through Creative Dance for Early Years (Creative Movers, Pre-Primary and Primary). In 2022, Rambert Grades entered into a 3-year pilot with the Royal Academy of Dance (RAD) in Australia. RAD Registered Teachers across Australia may take advantage of an exclusive discount on Rambert Grades membership.
