I wanted to begin by saying, in our new world where we are all using chat GPT for assistance in elevating our language, I wanted to be as ‘me’ as possible with my welcome letter to you all. It will always be my commitment to never use artificial Intelligence when communicating on a personal nature, or speaking from the heart. ♥️

As we find ourselves coming back to our favourite weekend of the year, this year, I think it’s more important than ever to place a highlight on individuality, your uniqueness, the thing that makes you YOU.

As my years in the industry develop, one of the main things I would like to encourage is people forging their own paths, their own journeys, and doing and discovering things their own way. We are all unique artists and there are no two journeys that should be crafted alike.

I see pressures for young dancers and creatives to feel they need to fit into a mould to make things work in this industry, but the more you try to be something that is unauthentic to yourself, the deeper you drive yourself away from who you truly are, and should be.

Your impact as a dancer or creative should not be measured by followers or fame, but by the integrity you carry as an artist and the lives you uplift on the way.

I want to encourage you all to surround yourself with doers, dreamers, explorers, creators. Those whose energy feels light and bright to be around.

Be YOU and let the person next to you be them. Celebrate each other’s differences. You don’t need to be any more than what you are, as long as you are being authentically you. So please use this weekend to help find the individual within. We have no mirrors, no need for comparison here!

This weekend is also all about elevating each other. It’s about recognising the incredible potential we all have to learn, to lead, to inspire, and to set powerful examples for those who look to us.

In a world full of quick clicks and easy shortcuts, I want to encourage you to explore more. Immerse yourself in the artistry of dance and not be attached to the outcome, try new thingsdiscovery is key!

Your journey as a dancer should be rooted in purpose, not popularity. Your power lies in your craft, the example you chose to set, and the path you chose to take.

Being a dancer and creative is to be immersed, to feel, to create, to uncover, to connect. So while you’re here, shine, dance, feel, grow, discover and be reminded of your incredible ability to rise above the noise and just be yourself.

If you are not sure what work ethic is just look at your parents and what they do for their family, for you, for your siblings. You won’t find a better role model than a family member who doesn’t just work hard, they are the epitome of never giving up even if the going gets tough. The same for your dance teachers – dancers and dance teachers have a great work ethic. The amount of preparation that goes into planning and ensuring that classes, exams, concerts and other opportunities are planned in minute detail is next level.

Persevering is not giving up, it is about pushing yourself to continue even if the going gets tough or the road is long and arduous. Believe me HARD WORK pays off. How do you push yourself? How do you find motivation? Do you have a role model that you would like to be just like? I am sure you do. It might be an older sibling or a cousin. It might be one of your parents. It will very likely be your dance teacher. What is it about them that you admire so much? Why do you want to be just like them?

Remember you are unique so be sure to be YOU. However, what attracts you to your mentor or the person you most want to be like? It will be the way they conduct themselves. Do they have great appearance, do they take care of themselves, do they speak well, do they have good pronunciation and command of the English language? Ask yourself, what is it that you admire so much?

Now get to work. Take pride in your appearance, no matter if it is going to school, or to work – you might have a part time job, or going to dance classes or competitions. Always be presentable. Don’t get caught short. Be prepared. Be organised so that you can hold yourself accountable and be proud of yourself.

When I said HARD WORK pays off remember the opening of doors is different for everyone. Think of an AFL player who gets picked by a team – some go into the draft at 18 and are picked when they are young and they are off and running. Others don’t. But they do get a shot to keep developing their skills in the next level and over time their physique and ability continues to develop and they might get picked up at 22, 23, 24 or even older. It doesn’t matter the age. What matters is the level to talent and what they can bring to the team. What matters more is that these ‘older’ players never gave up, never let go of their dream and they continued to work hard and improve.

I had a student who went to the Victorian College of the Arts and when all her friends went en pointe at 12 and 13 she was not allowed. Not because she didn’t have the talent but because her bones had not fully developed. So she tried at 14 – NO still not ready. She tried at 15 – NO still not ready. 16 – BINGO en pointe and nothing held her back, she caught up to her friends in the blink of an eye and had great longevity as a ballet dancer because her teachers knew that the gentle and safe approach was the way forward for her. She is now a physiotherapist and guess who treated me when I fell on broken pavement in the City of Melbourne and broke my ankle? Your future is in your hands – never give up, persevere and work hard.
